CHAPTER 1THE PROBLEM AND ITS
SCOPE
INTRODUCTION
College life can be stressful, it is one of the most unforgettable experience in one’s life, and the higher the level the more difficult the lessons encountered. Nursing student’s goal is to have good grades in all professional, major and minor subjects and do good in chosen field as reflected in the performance during duties. Passing the Nursing licensure exam could be considered as one of the motivation of the nursing student since having the title as, a Registered Nurse would pays it all; the sleepless nights, time consuming and energy wasting long requirements, the ever enervating duties and expensive tuition.
A motivated student will find it easier to do all the necessary tasks that need to be done; it will especially allow students to study a lot more focused and with more concentration. Being a college student requires a strict self-discipline, determination and time management, such factors can contribute a huge impact on student’s motivation towards their studies. Student have different abilities, some may manage their emotions, family problems, or financial problems without being affected in school while some may be overwhelmed and distracted to the extent that they cannot focus during class discussion, quizzes, tests and exams. Some students might be extremely outgoing that they intentionally missed some school days just to attend social gatherings or some might had a hangover after a night party while some are not really into social gatherings. According to Webster dictionary (2008) motivation is “the process of starting, direction and maintaining physical and psychological activities”. While Sevilla (1994) states that, it is “the force behind behavior”.
Nilsson and Stomberg, (2008) found that nursing students mainly grade their motivation positively distributed, and different throughout their entire education. The main motivation factor was becoming a nurse. The nursing students mentioned intrinsic motivation factors as explanation for their degree of motivation. Nursing students’ motivation has proved be related to the successful outcome of education. It is important to investigate how nursing students assess their motivation during their studies, and to discover what factors are related to their motivation as well as what would increase their motivation if necessary.
Nursing students’ reasons for choosing an education in nursing have been studied earlier and the results of the different studies seem to be related to each other, independent of culture.
The study aims to determine the level 4 nursing student’s motivation toward their studies at School of Nursing at Mindanao Sanitarium and Hospital College, Tibanga, Iligan City.

3. Is there a significant relationship between the respondents’ motivation toward their studies and their personal profile in term of age, gender, marital status, family income?
HYPOTHESES
The null hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance were:
Ho1: There are no significant relationships between the respondent’s motivation toward their studies and their personal profile in term of age, gender, marital status, family income.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
The study focus on 90 out of 116 level 4 nursing students motivation toward their studies regardless of their age, gender, marital status, and family income, who will be enrolled for the second semester SY 2012 – 2013 at Mindanao Sanitarium and Hospital College, Tibanga Iligan City

Future Researchers. This will serve as a guide for related or similar studies on their particular topic.
CHAPTER 3RESEARCH
METHODOLOGY
RESEARCH DESIGNThe descriptive-correlation research will be
utilize as research design in the study to determine the level of nursing students personal profile such as age, gender, marital status, family income and their motivation toward their studies. It also look into if there is a significant relationship between the respondents personal profile and their motivation toward their studies.
According to Polit and Beck (2004), descriptive correlational research describes the relationship among variables rather than to infer cause and effect relationship. They further explained that the purpose of descriptive research is to observe, describe, and document aspect of a situation as it naturally occurs.
RESEARCH LOCALE
This study will be conducted at the campus of Mindanao Sanitarium and Hospital College, barangay San. Miguel, Iligan City at the back of the Mindanao Sanitarium and Hospital building where students can perform their clinical duties. It take only less than a 5 minutes ride from the city proper to reach the college there are different courses offer in Mindanao Sanitarium and Hospital College, namely BS Radiology technology, BS Medical Technology, BS in Education, Computer service, BS Business Administration, IT, BS in Pharmacology, this school is an Adventist institution but most of the students comprising the school population are non-Adventist religious group.
RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY
The respondents of the study will be 90 out of 116 level four nursing student regardless of age, gender, marital status, family income who will be enrolled in the second semester SY 2012-2013, at Mindanao Sanitarium and Hospital College.
SAMPLING DESIGN
The systematic sampling method is used in choosing the participants of the study. Only 90 out of 116 level 4 nursing students who will be enrolled in the second semester SY 2012 – 2013, at Mindanao Sanitarium and Hospital College, Tibanga Iligan City.
RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
The study will be using a 20 item questionnaire; which consists of two parts. Part I personal profile such as age, gender, marital status, family income. Part II 16 item motivation statements taken from the study nursing students’ motivation toward their studies by Kerstin EL Nilsson and Margareta I Warren Stomberg, 2008. This includes the following statements the degree of difficulty/demand on the studies was experienced as too heavy, engaged or not engaged teacher, stimulating or no stimulating organization of the program was noticed, the certificate and the profession frightened or not frightened the student, having a positive or negative attitude to the studies, achieving or not achieving a good study results, having a good or bad life situation, a good or a bad friendship to fellow-students was experienced.
Motivation scoring for each statement consists of assessment of their motivation from a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 is not motivated at all and 10 is highly motivated.
DATA GATHERING
A request letter asking to conduct a study will submit to the Dean of the Nursing. Upon approval of the letter, the list of level 4 nursing students will take from the level 4 coordinator to get 90 respondents out of 116. Names going check schedule for the distribution of questionnaire, a letter will attach to the questionnaire of anonymity. Explain the purpose and assurance and the questionnaire will take at 3-5 minutes answering
STATISTICAL TOOLS The statistical tool includes the following: 1. Frequency and Percentage. These
statistical tools were used to give emphasis on the respondent’s profile in terms of year level, age and gender. The formula is stated below:
Formula: P= F/n (100) Where: P- Percentage F- Frequency n- Total number of the respondents
2. Weighted Mean. This tool is used for to illustrate average of the respondent’s data in terms of knowledge on health assessment.
Formula:
X= x /NN- Total number of the respondents.
3. Chi-square Test. This is utilize to test for significant relationship between the respondents’ knowledge on Health Assessment and their personal profile in terms of age, gender and year level.
