It has always been our intention that the practice be involved in a diverse range of projects to allow a breadth of knowledge and ideas to permeate throughout every aspect of our design process. Within this broad spectrum we have undertaken a large amount of residential work, ranging from modest domestic extensions, to heritage conversions, onwards to large speculative housing developments. We therefore understand the importance of listening carefully to our clients to bring them the best possible spaces.

WEST FINCHLEY

The London Preschool Company selected Rayner Davies to assist them in the delivery of a number of new facilities in greater London. Their com-mitment to quality education is demonstrated by a commitment to a quality environment.

This project takes a very leafy corner plot where the architecture has been carefully composed around the many trees. The design playfully provides outdoor space at tree canopy level with a series of roof terrace areas, whilst the building form itself steps back to reduce it’s impact on the site.

The school is two buildings: an existing Victorian building was converted and extended to provide

spaces for the two and three year old children, with staff accommodation tucked around the side. The new building provides for the very young children and the older children on the upper floors.

Landscape is a large part of the scheme. Many of the rooms lead onto external terraces, the flat roof areas are green sedum covered and the wooded site provides exciting areas for play

WANDSWORTHOne of several nursaries commissioned by The London Preschool and the first to complete and open, The Wandsworth Preschool, demonstrates a commitment to quality education through a quality environment created within the con-straints of an existing building. Conversion of existing commercial space can be complicated, however, Rayner Davies were able to deliver on The London Preschool’s brief and the project was completed and opened within just four months.

The school is licenced to accommodate 92 chil-

dren from the very young to preschool age, each age group housed in their own unique space. externall at the rear is a small play area.

STANGROUND

This scheme uses playful yet familiar geometry to provide intresting forms both internally and externally. Based upon the simple idea of a courtyard garden, the proposed scheme provides a protected play area by virtue of its c-shaped plan form. The timber cladding continues the playful theme using the direction of the laying pattern to textural effect.

ALPHA KINDERGARTEN

WINCHMORE HILLThe second school to complete and open for the London Preschool Company was The Winchmore Hill Pre School. A former dairy, the existing buildings were converted and extended to a little over 6,000 square feet of space.
