nupersona case for support 2013
DESCRIPTION
NuPersona is a nonprofit organization that changes the lives of rehabilitated ex-offenders through technology.TRANSCRIPT
Who among us hasn’t needed a second chance? New beginnings can be difficult, but for some people starting
over is even more challenging. At NuPersona, we’re prepared to
help those who face perhaps the biggest challenges in receiving a
fresh start: people who were recently released from jail or prison
who are ready to become productive members of society.
We realize that not all offenders can be rehabilitated. However,
it is possible for many to pay their debt to society, show remorse,
and leave prison wanting to get their lives back on track. The
difference between people who are rehabilitated and the rest of
society is that most other people have a social support system to
help them start anew. Many ex-offenders may not have any social
support at all, and this can make it more difficult for people to
integrate back into society.
On top of this stressful and upsetting situation, they must face
the “Google Dilemma.” The “Google Dilemma” is what NuPersona
founder Randall Krugh calls the especially difficult situation
ex-offenders face—their information never disappears from
the Internet, which most employers use to screen potential
employees. Randall knows about this dilemma firsthand. More
than 30 years ago, he was convicted of drug possession in
Florida and served nine months of an 18-month sentence, being
released for good behavior. Randall says when he left prison he
was remorseful, ashamed, and completely rehabilitated. Since
he left prison, Randall has been a model citizen, had no trouble
with the law, and has built a successful and productive life.
Though he has worked diligently to rebuild his life, Randall
also credits his strong Christian faith for his success. However,
regardless of how well Randall has done, he still faces negative
and inaccurate articles about his past on the Internet.

A Case for Support
“Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.”
— Carl Bard, Scottish theologian, writer, and broadcaster
The three main barriers that ex-offenders face as they reenter society include:• “TheGoogleDilemma”• Lackofincomegeneration• Lackofaccesstofinancialservices
Randall’s own struggles motivated him to start NuPersona. His
goal is not to help ex-offenders wipe their slate clean or to hide
their record. His goal is to help ex-offenders rehabilitate their
digital presence by developing a fully vetted online profile. In
their NuPersona online profile, ex-offenders will:
• Revealtheirchargesandsentence
• Tellthetruth
• Expressremorse
• Provideevidenceofauthenticrehabilitation
• Display“CertificatesofAchievementsandEmployability”
obtained during incarceration
• Discloseaplanforfindingwork
• Describeamethodforpositiveinteractionwiththeirfamilies

website whenever his or her name is searched on the Internet.

limited to:

The benefits NuPersona offers ex-offenders can be life-
changing. Without a more positive online profile, an ex-
offender can’t get a job. With no credit or bad credit, an
ex-offender can’t purchase a cell phone (which is useful while
seekingemployment).Withoutfinancialliteracy,anex-offender
won’t be able to maintain an apartment or car pay payment. In
short, daily activities that we take for granted are difficult for
ex-offenders to pursue.
The NuPersona ReachThe implications of NuPersona’s services are enormous and
far-reaching. To date, there is no other nonprofit organization
or company in the United States that provides digital
rehabilitation services for ex-offenders. Though NuPersona’s
initial target audience is Ohio, President Randall Krugh is
prepared to offer services nationwide.

NuPersona’s mission is to develop, design,
and manage a social networking site for ex-
offenders, re-defining how they are perceived
after release from prison and rehabilitation.
Consequently, NuPersona will:
•Improveex-offenders’opportunityfor
gainful employment
•Improvefamilyunification
•Reducerecidivismrates
•Enhancepublicsafety
The NuPersona SolutionNuPersonaisastart-up,501(c)3tax-exemptnonprofitsocial
networking site that enables rehabilitated ex-offenders to
change their online image. People who leave their criminal
past behind—through remorseful and honest rehabilitation—
can then begin a normal, law-abiding life where second
chances are not hindered by the digital documents of past
mistakes.
How Does NuPersona Work?Rehabilitated ex-offenders may sign up for a NuPersona
subscription at no cost. The social network aspect of
NuPersona works much like Facebook and LinkedIn, but the
difference is that NuPersona exists to solve various reentry
problems ex-offenders experience. NuPersona subscribers
will redefine their image and also connect with family,
community-based organizations, employers, and parole
officers, all in a non-judgmental, online environment.
“Put off the Old Self and put on the New Self.”
— Colossians 3:8-12 (New American Standard) Bible
Why NuPersona MattersWhat happens to ex-offenders is important to society because
all of our lives are intertwined. If an ex-offender cannot find a
job, a home, or be with his or her family, this affects you with
more of your tax money supporting those who can’t support
themselves or the possibility of ex-offenders returning to
crime out of desperation. Oppositely, if an ex-offender is able
to secure a job and a safe place to live, re-unite with his or her
family, pay taxes, and in general, be a contributing member of
society, this also affects you.
NuPersona’s approach will help ex-offenders continued
rehabilitation and re-integration into society in many ways.
• Rehabilitatetheirdigitalpersona
• Re-unitewithfamily
• Secureajob
• Stayoutofprison
• Haveaccesstoformalfinancialserviceswithmoney
management tools designed to generate and build savings
• Createsustainablesavings
• Repaircredithistory
• Haveaccesstohealthcare
• Interactandbuildpositivenetworkswithfamily,friends,and
mentors
These outcomes have a broad impact on society:
safer communities with productive citizens who
contribute positively to society.
Though NuPersona cares about rehabilitating ex-offenders because they are humans, this is also an economic issue. According to a study conducted by the VERA Institute of Justice (http://www.vera.org/pubs/price-prisons-what-incarceration-costs-taxpayers):
•In2010,theOhioDepartmentofRehabilitationandCorrection(ODRC)had$1.27 billion in prison expenditures and another $50.5 million in prison-related costs beyond the department’s budget.
•TheaverageannualcostperinmateinOhioin 2010 was $25,814.
•Thetotaltaxpayercostwas$1,315.50.
