Salvete JCLers, and welcome to the Fall Issue of the Nuntius Californiensis! This past sum-mer in sunny Las Vegas, nearly 1,500 Latin students from all across the country gathered at the University of Las Vegas, Nevada to compete in a vari-ety of academic, athletic, and artistic competitions, as well as forge friendships and celebrate the Classics. Classical League Convention took place in the middle of July, and was a weeklong event, held every year at a col-lege campus in the United States. Each and every day is jam-packed with every work-shop, academic test, athletic competition, and activity under the sun (and trust me, there was plenty of sun). The Califor-nia delegation consisted of 46 JCLers from across the state, and despite their small size, they managed to perform ex-ceptionally well, placing in nearly every category and

showing the rest of the country just what California has to offer.

For the third time in its history, the Southern California Re-gional Amici Madness will be held at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School. On November 9th, Rome will come alive atop our hill as hundreds of students show off their academic, artistic, and athletic prowess all in the name of the classics! Delegates can expect a wide spectrum of activities and workshops throughout SCRAM this year. They can flex their muscles at

athletic events like soccer, fugepi-lam, and our new game, capture the vexillum. They can also take a break from the action and have a memento to take home by creat-ing a mosaic or tie-dying a t-shirt. “Spells from the Boy Who Lived” and “Running for CJCL Office” are workshops that are sure to be fun and informative. Students can also spell BINGO! with “Mythology Bingo” and roam the campus during the Latin Scavenger Hunt. “Project

Runway: Greek My-thology Addi-tion” will be returning to its birthplace as delegates compete to design the best outfits of mythologi-cal characters.

Also included in the festivities will be a magnificent Carnelevarium including games like “Pin the Stake in the Cyclops’ Eye” and treats like popcorn and shaved ice.

SCRAM will take place from 8:30 A.M. to 3:30 PM, and information can be found on our website, pvphslatin.com. All registra-tion forms, lists of events, and other exciting happenings will be posted there as well. I, and all of the PVPHS Latin Club, look forward to seeing you there! -Delaney Kerkhof, Southern Rep

GET Ready for SCRAM 2013

Ludi Novembres I hope you are all ready to

experience Amor in Mundo An-tiquo (Love in the Ancient World) at Ludi Novembres this year! On November 9th, Menlo School will be hosting Northern California JCL members from 8:30 AM-3:30 PM for a day of certamen, academic tests, sports, and workshops.

After a morning snack and opening assembly, JCLers will have the chance to flex their academic muscles and tackle up to three tests in various subjects. Or, if you choose, you can attempt the La-bors of Psyche in order to be re-united with your immortal lover (or, more likely, to win glory and prizes).

In the afternoon, prepare to be stunned by authors and Stan-ford professors during two work-shop periods. After filling your head with knowledge about love in the ancient world and filling your stom-ach with a hearty lunch, you will be free to mingle with fellow JCLers

in a variety of activities including certamen, sports and crafts. A round robin style certamen tourna-ment will be available to test your Latin knowledge, and a casual trivia game will also be held in order to find the most devoted Harry Potter fan in Northern California. We will also offer volleyball, basketball and ultimate frisbee as an opportunity to get some exercise after a long day of Latin. Finally, if you are feel-ing especially creative, you can

In Memoriam: MRs. Lura Wallace This past summer, beloved CJCL Scholarship Chair Lura Ann Wallace passed away at the age of 86. An integral part of the CJCL, Lura had lived a life bursting with her undying passion for the Classics and dedica-tion to her students. She taught Latin at Gardena High School for an amazing 40 years, from 1952 to 1991, and in-spired thousands of students to love Latin and the Classics as much as she did. Her students wrote, directed, and acted in their own Roman plays, and even constructed models of Ancient Rome. As a Ful-bright Scholar, Lura studied in Rome and attended UCLA, and

after graduating remained an active member of the UCLA Phi Mu So-rority. In the words of one of her former Latin students, Rachel Hilker, “Mrs. Wallace was by far the most influential teacher I have ever

encountered. There are no words to ex-

press my thanks to her for taking me under he wing at times that I needed her, especially on a trip to Italy when my wallet was stolen from me on a bus. She nurtured my passion for Latin and the love of languages. There will be an eter-nal light shining from all of those she touched in her life. What a

treasure to have spent some time In her world..” If you’re reading this, please take a moment of silence as we remember such an amazing and dedicated individual.

The delegates had an especially unique challenge when it came to the daily Spirit Competition. Led by 2nd Vice President Sydney Higa, each day’s spriti competition required a new wardrobe, new cheers, and a heck of a lot more enthusiasm. On Tuesday, it was “Retro Ad Futurum”, Wednesday was “Waking Up in Roma”, Thurs-day was “Falling in JCLove” and Friday was “Diamonds are a Ro-man’s Best Friend”. Although we didn’t place, we never ceased to make our enemies shudder in fear at our ferocious cheers (I might be exaggerating a tad).. When our delegates weren’t shouting their hearts out at spirit, they were competing, and puer did they compete! Fre-derick Muth, among countless other awards, won 2nd place overall Academics, 5th place total overall, and was chosen as a Lillie

B. Hamilton award recipient. Muth also played on the Advanced Cer-tamen team, which placed 3rd in the nation and comprised of Muth, Elisabeth Siegel. Joseph Barreto, and Thomas Collins. Also, delegate Brandon

Kim from Loyola High ran for NJCL Parliamentarian and won! But better than one national offi-cer is two! Jon Gumz, CSCL President, ran a successful cam-paign for NSCL Parliamentarian.. I believe that our 2nd Vice President put it best when she said that, "Only at NJCL Con-

vention do I have the opportunity to be surrounded by my peers from across the country and to spend the entire week immersed in our common interest, the Clas-sics. It is unlike anything else I have ever experienced, once it's over, I

spend the next 51 weeks wait-ing for the day that I will be reunited with all my fellow clas-sicists."

Thus, thus it helps to go under the shadows." -Dido from Ver-gil's Aeneid, Book IV If you could be one figure from the ancient world, historical or mythical, who would you be and why?: Diana. Hopefully for those of who you have already read the Aeneid, this word search brings up some memories (good ones, of course), and for those of you who haven’t, just relax, you’ll get their eventually. Until then, try looking for these iconic characters of Vergil’s epic poem, the Aeneid.
