AT&T will complete the shut down of its 2G wireless network by the end of 2016. Despite 2G sunset warnings as early as 2012, many organizations have failed to act, and now risk their 2G devices ‘going dark’.

Companies that have active devices on AT&T’s 2G network need to begin upgrading or migrating their units immediately. Otherwise, these devices will lose network connectivity on or before January 1, 2017. That’s why Numerex and T-Mobile have come together to offer a 2G migration path that will allow organizations to keep their 2G devices active through 2020!

ISSUE 03

T he concept of an IoT platform should be one of elegant simplicity. An IoT

platform should bring together all of the software and infrastructure components required to create an end-to-end IoT solution, taking the complexity out of delivering key services and support. That all encompassing, end-to-end set of capabilities is core to the IoT platform concept but confusion exists in the market because vendors that do not offer a complete, end-to-end platform still refer to themselves as platform vendors even though they may have only one set of capabilities available.

A complete IoT platform is composed of the core services of device manage-ment, network connectivity management, and application enablement, along with several other underlying capabilities that are fundamental to a comprehensive IoT service such as security, billing services and data management. Having all of these capabilities available from a single source, with a single supplier relationship creates vital efficiencies for an enterprise, providing them with access to high-end

technologies in a way that enables them to scale up as required, launch new services quickly and do so in a very cost effective manner.

Device Management is an essential platform capability because it provides built-in over the air (OTA) ability to update hardware in the field, enabling software and hardware to be reconfig-ured over the air.

Gateway Services takes the complexity out of the IoT and makes it simple to capture, organize, and transform data into useful information supporting better decision making.

Application Enablement is at the heart of IoT because without applications, the data collected by IoT sensors cannot be turned into something of value and dis-played in such a way as to make sense of the information.

Connectivity Management dynamic and reliable network capability is integral

to IoT because without it there is no connectivity for the Internet of things.

Underlying services and support functions are the additional key elements of an IoT platform and encom-pass systems to address administration and data protection—such as billing and security.

We were early to recognize the changing nature of organizations’ de-mands for end-to-end IoT capabilities and has transformed itself from an M2M solution vendor to an IoT managed service provider. Our focus has evolved from discrete and independent products toward more hosted enablement services designed to free customers from many of the traditional complex challenges faced in deploying IoT solutions. At the heart of our transformation is a horizontally inte-grated platform called nxFAST™. NX

As the Internet of Things (IoT) matures and more projects are initiated by enterprise users, corporations and organizations in many different industries, a clear need for a comprehensive platform approach to IoT is emerging. In short, IoT Platform Services are being widely viewed as being too unwieldy and inefficient, with many of the common elements for crucial IoT services missing, making it difficult for companies to quickly deploy and develop their IoT strategy. Numerex is seeking to clarify the confusion by identifying 5 key ingredients for a robust, end-to-end IoT Platform.

C rash and theft are among the greatest concerns for motorcycle

owners. That’s why Lee Knight, found-er of Phantom Tracking, launched his breakthrough technology company twelve years ago. After Knight’s friend was twice the victim of motorcycle theft, he began researching patents related to motorcycle security systems. Sur-prisingly, no one ever thought of using a bike laying on its side as a means for detecting a crash. Over time, Knight’s market research led to developing a unique security system that would help protect both bike and rider.

Motorcycle riders tour endless paved and unpaved roads across America. Phantom Tracking knew that tracking technology built on reliable

network coverage would be critical in helping to protect both motorcycle and rider, while also filling a huge gap in the market. Together with Numerex, Phantom Tracking incorporated Network-as-a-Service to its motorcycle asset tracking solution. This allows Phantom Tracking to maintain low-cost network connectivity, avoid network outages that could potentially impact life or death situations, and enable an

end-user mobile application built on the nxFAST Platform.

This complete solution involving a tracking device, a wireless network solution based on cellular connectivity, and a cloud based user portal built on a robust IoT Platform, allows Phantom Tracking to increase their profitability while adding value for their customers.

Low Cost Network-as-a-ServiceThere are two surefire ways to bypass the average motorcycle security system: take a screwdriver and hammer to the ignition cylinder or lift the bike wholesale into the back of a pickup truck. The market needed a security solution that monitored mobile and fixed assets whether a motorcycle was armed or

unarmed, parked or in motion. But the ability to provide theft solutions with technology must be weighed against factors such as cost and distribution. For Phantom Tracking, “the challenge is not the technology,” says Knight. “It’s getting to the market with a pricing structure that makes sense.”

Getting the right combination of quality hardware, software, security, network, and customer support – at a price the market would pay – wasn’t easy. Choosing nxFAST™ Platform Network-as-a-Service was the best decision for Phantom Tracking. The Phantom Tracking security system / theft recovery product requires an

upfront cost for hardware along with a monthly fee. Numerex’s low cost network service allows Phantom great flexibility in pricing to its customers, ensuring a workable business model and higher profits.

“Much more than looking at just dollars goes into assessing the cost-effectiveness of decision making in regards to asset tracking”, says Lee Knight, owner of Phantom Tracking. “Considering support and sufficient infrastructure are, in many cases, just as important as cost. This seems to be where Numerex excels. Numerex has proven a significant value-add to our decision making by taking the time to understand our markets and provide service options that specifically address our needs without adding useless extras.

Also, they have been able to provide valuable feedback on technology trends in the telematics market which have allowed us to tailor our offerings to take advantage of technology changes and effective pricing.”

Greater Life-Saving PotentialKnight handpicked Numerex to be the backbone of his life-saving technology. Once owners fully understand the importance and benefits of securing their motorcycles, there is, of course, the immeasurable need to protect human life. Motorcyclists may sometimes find themselves in dangerous road conditions. Phantom

Tracking does more than just pinpoint the location of stolen motorcycles. Their hardware is also engineered with a programmed accelerometer that measures changes in acceleration and direction, enabling them to alert their monitoring center when and if the bike is on its side in the ignition-on position.

Traveling across Blackfoot, Idaho, in the middle of winter, a Phantom Tracking customer encountered a dangerous patch of black ice. He lost control and the motorcycle skidded off the road, causing injury and loss of consciousness. No one was around to see the accident. “The last thing he remembers was waking up in an ambulance,” Knight said. “When he came to, he asked (the Paramedic and EMT) how they found him.”

Phantom Tracking CalledWhen the motorcycle rider slid off the road with his bike on its side, in the ignition-on position, its Phantom Tracking security system went into Confirmed Crash mode. Instantly a call was placed to the customer’s mobile phone, but no one answered. Phantom Tracking immediately rolled emergency services to the crash site, using their GPS tracking solution and Numerex’s reliable network coverage to quickly identify the victim’s exact location.

Mobile Application CustomizationNumerex’s nxFAST Platform Network-as-a-Service is also enabling Phantom Tracking to create a connected, interactive

experience for its customers. The company is working on a mobile application that will feature GPS navigation, trip planning, visual mapping, (using breadcrumbs), and other infotainment features.

Using reliable, accurate network services will enable Phantom Tracking to meet the growing safety demands of the motorcycle industry. Advanced technology may help the future safety for motorcycle riders, especially in the context of roads and highways largely occupied by autonomous vehicles or dangerous drivers distracted by their smart phones. Although, a lot of work is still to be done to ensure the safety of these motorcycle riders Phantom Tracking, with the help of Numerex, is poised to change motorcycle safety and security to better serve its customers. NX

“With Numerex Network Solutions, I can go into the market with a much more reasonable price.”

NX IN THE NEWS

Interview Excerpt: Shu GanIoT Now’s editor, Alun Lewis, recently spoke with Shu Gan, CMO at Numerex, a long-established pioneer in the M2M/IoT space, about how his company has been making major structural changes and improvements to its business model in order to adapt to the challenges and opportunities ahead.

On recent changes in company leadership:

SG: Numerex has been a key player in the development of first telemetry, which then became M2M, and which is now known as the IoT, over many years – next year we’ll be celebrating our 25th anniversary as a company. Our board recognized that Numerex—and the wider IoT sector —are now at a critical juncture in their evolution and that strategies, services and products that have served us and our customers well for years must now adapt to the new and growing demands of the marketplace.

We have a solid base to build from with around 8,000 enterprise customers, including some well-known names such as John Deere, Comcast, and United Technologies. Altogether, our customer install base adds up to more than 2 million enterprise users, connected across the planet in ways that encompass the full range of cellular and satellite technologies.

I’d define the journey that we’re on as having the goal of becoming a true IoT services company—but with a series of specific and well communicated specialties. To support that, we’re also redefining our focus on some specific vertical markets to provide complete end-to-end solutions for our customers.

Numerex already has all of the IoT key building blocks in place—devices, connectivity through our carrier partners, featurerich applications, and a scalable platform that allows rapid deployment of virtually any IoT solution. We combine that with technical expertise developed over many years and a keen insight into specific markets. With our new corporate goals, we are looking to reconfigure the assets that make up these building blocks to increase in feature/functionality and services, simultaneously broadening the scope of our offerings while also refining the targeting of particular vertical and horizontal markets.
