Song OverviewNumber Dance Machine helps children to recognise numerals and the numbers they represent in the environment, especially numbers 1 to 16.

Top Tips (using online Video Presentation or Full Track mp3)

T1: What do you Notice? Pause the video at 0:46. This is the first time the children see all 16 numeral representations of each number. Ask them what they notice? Where did the pictures come from? What’s the story behind each picture? What would be their number on a birthday cake? What would their house number be? V2: Numbers are Everywhere! Pause the video at 0:56 or any other suitable point where a number is spotted in the environment. Explore what the number represents (7 represents 7 hours). What other numbers might children see in each image? Why are only the numbers 1 to 12 displayed on a clock?

Did You Know? There are three different types of numbers used in everyday life.

1. Cardinal Numbers: These numbers refer to the size of something. So size 7 shoes are smaller than size 11 shoes. 16 girls and 14 boys would mean there are more girls than boys.

2. Ordinal Numbers: These numbers refer to the order of things, like the positions in a running race. I was born on the 4th February - the fourth day in that month. The song Number Fun Races focus’ on this type of number. Your home probably has a ordinal number on its front door. I live at the seventh house in our road... number 7!

3. Nominal Numbers: These numbers are naming numbers. When I grew up we had the 194 and the 166 buses that came down our road. These numbers didn’t refer the size of the bus or the order of the buses that came down our road. The England cricket captain wears 66 on the back of his shirt. This is a nominal number.

Activity IdeasA1: Number Dance Check List: Print out a copy of the Number Dance Check List. Your job is to go on a Number Hunt around your home. Can they find all these numbers in 16 different locations on your travels? Tick the numbers off on their list and jot down where they found the numbers underneath each picture on the sheet. The bottom row on the Check List has been left empty. In these four spaces record 4 numbers you find that are different from the other 16 numbers! They might find the number 24, example, on a calender!A2: Number Dance Machine Photo Wall: Go on a Number Hunt around your home. This time, take a camera with you and take photos of the numbers you find. These can then be printed out to make a Number Dance Machine Poster or display.A3: We’re all going on a Number Hunt! Prepare images or representations of the numbers 1 to 16, plus 4 mystery numbers. Write 20 clues that the Number Hunter(s) will need to follow in order to find each of the numbers and provide the Number Hunters with copy of the Number Dance Check List to record which numbers they have found. Set your Number Hunters off on their Number Hunt. Note: The clues could be prepared by the child or for the child. The Number Hunters could be a child or an adult!

Example Clue: You have found Number 6! You will find your next number in the sink!
