Bilkent Mourns theLoss of MehmetSerhat Azgur(Continued from Page 1)When Mr. Azgur applied to enterthe MA program at Bilkent, he wrote apersonal statement. His statementencapsulates his philosophy ofteaching, his eagerness to advance hisprofessional skills, and his ownmodest and quiet approach. He wrote: “I am neither an experiencedteacher nor have I received a formaleducation in this field. But I startedgiving ICT-related [courses] in 1998 atBilkent University. And I loved theprofession, and have been continuouslysearching for different and bettermethods of teaching since then.“I started as a part-time instructor;after 25 years of professionalexperience, I quickly become addictedto teaching and could not leave theUniversity. Eventually, I understood that the important point is not‘teaching’ but ‘learning.’“Thus, instead of re-inventing thewheel, I applied to the Faculty ofEducation for the MA program tolearn education. And to discuss newmethods and ways to make mystudents ‘learn’ better and faster, which would also let me accomplishmy job better.”He ended his statement: “Above all,I am searching for answers to twoquestions:“How can I increase motivation inthe classroom and maximize studentlearning outcomes? Secondly, how canI increase the quality and use of timeto become a better role model for mystudents?”Mehmet Serhat Azgur will begreatly missed by everyone at Bilkent. We would like to express our profoundcondolences to his family, friends, students and the Bilkent community. (Continued from Page 1)solar panels are guaranteed toproduce energy for 25 years, this means19 years of free electricity will comefrom sunlight, making the project notonly environmentally friendly, but alsovery profitable as an investment. Kemal explained the story behindthe project: “Due to technologicaldevelopments over the last three years, the cost of solar energy systems hasdecreased very quickly. Manycompanies have entered this segmentof the energy sector, and manyEuropean countries have enacted lawsand policies to increase solar energyusage. “At the same time, global warming isgetting very to be a more seriousproblem every day. The tremendousincrease in CO2 emissions is a resultof the huge growth in population andin energy usage at the same time. The outcome will be very destructivefor life on earth.

“So we all have to try in some wayto be the solution to this problem. Weshould start with energy usage, sinceit is both the basis of the problemand the solution. At this point, solarpanels can make a key contribution, because the yearly energy potential ofsun is larger than the total of all theenergy resources in the world. So Ibelieve this will be the technology ofthe future. We thank Rector AbdullahAtalar and Yeşim Erdoğan (USİM)for their support of our project.''After establishing their solar panelsystem on campus, Kemal and Ömercreated a website to show the resultsof the project, which can be found atbilkentsolar.bilkent.edu.tr. Theyhave also founded a company, ARTIInnovation, with offices at BilkentCyberpark. They are continuing todevelop additional projects in theenergy sector as well as to work ontheir innovative solar power system atBilkent.

Bilkent News 4OPINIONS

tate of the Theaters,Theater of the StateTurkey, a nation that is stillin the development stage, is alsoimproving in the area of theater.Anyone who has been following recentupdates in the field would think thatthis is a sarcastic remark; but accordingto research done by the TurkishStatistical Institute (TÜİK), there hasnot only been an increase in thenumber of theaters, but also in thenumber of productions per season, andthe number of people who attend theperformances. The research focuses onthe period from 2001 to 2011, and theexact numbers are given in the figurebelow. They show that there are fivetimes more theaters in Turkey, sixtimes more plays being staged and

[email protected] CEREN TURAN (CS/IV)

twice the number of people going to thetheater than there were ten years ago.The reason why I focused on theater inTurkey instead of any other country --apart from the fact that I’m currentlyliving there -- is because unlike in manyother countries, theater here existsagainst the wishes of the currentgovernment. Taking that into account, the numbers are extremely surprising. The discussion regarding theprivatization of state theaters has beengoing on for years, and in 2012 thegovernment (AKP - Justice andDevelopment Party) announced that“Giving government funding to eventsrelated to arts has become expensiveand inefficient due to the followingfacts: employing more artists than therequired number, lack of efficiency ofthe artists, not being open tocompetition and not following the latestdevelopments in arts.” It should benoted that the budget set apart for statetheaters is 0.04 percent of Turkey’sentire budget. Even leaving aside howsmall this amount is compared to thewhole, and simply looking at the AKP’sstatement, it must come as a shock thatthe country’s theaters are improvinginstead of closing down. Even if one accepts that governmentsnever fully reflect the opinions of thepeople they govern, it’s still quiteimpressive to have a public exactlyat the opposite pole from thegoverning body. But what keeps thetheaters going? I mean, what is sospecial about them that we don’t

seem to be able to let them go nomatter how much we are being forcedto do so? This question makes me thinkof the path followed by theater overtime, a path that is full of ups anddowns: from the highly exaggeratedGreek theater concerned mostly withthe gods and people’s interactions withthem, to Shakespeare’s heartbreakingtragedies, to Victorian plays that oneneeds to struggle to understand, tofinally today. Where does theater stand today?Setting aside the restaging of earlierplays, I think that theater today is amirror not only to one’s own personalitybut to reality itself. There are no longerhuge stages with elaborate decorations. The actors no longer speak in theatricalvoices; they sound like the audience. They don’t wear clothes that makethem look like French courtiers; theylook like us. Often, they don’t evenstand on a separate and elevated placecalled the stage; they stand among us.So attending a play is nothing morethan listening to a friend who talks a bittoo much and doesn’t give you muchtime to answer back. And this isprecisely why we, as Turkish people, areholding onto theater more strongly thanever, because it is the only connectionwe have to reality at the moment. The feeling of living in a play firstoccurred to me a few months agoduring a series of protests against thedemolition of Gezi Park in Istanbul tobuild something more profitableinstead. While we, in the role of

protesters, were trying to walk to one ofthe main streets of Ankara, I saw otheractors playing their parts as members ofthe security forces. They tried todisperse the protesters with pepperspray, and though it wasn’t really pepperspray they were using, people coughedand some fainted because our scriptstold us to do so. Some people didn'tmake it, because the lines telling themto exit were replaced with ones tellingthem that they die. Then some wenthome, backstage, and some stayed. Itwas such an amazing performance. There was even a little play within aplay: a couple of people who didn’tbelong to the protesting party werethere in disguise and did all that was intheir power to provoke the crowd. And itwent on; it’s still going on. Apparentlyit’s quite a long play we are a part of.As fun as acting is, it makes onemiss the effortlessness of reality. Sowhen we yearn for reality, we go totheaters. That is why no matter howmuch the budget gets cut, or what thegovernment says about it or how smallthe community is, theater in itspresent form allows the audience tohave an experience that is more realthan their lives outside the theater. “Isit possible to say that theater as it istoday is in a better state compared towhat it was a few centuries ago?” No, itno longer takes you to new amazingplaces you’ll probably never get thechance to visit; yes, it takes you to themost amazing place you can ever find:your own life.

usten 101 The “Austen” I’m referringto is, of course, Jane: theinfluential 19th-century writer. She isnot influential in the traditional sense;what she wrote did not invoke animmediate reaction -- it did notstimulate a social movement orsinglehandedly begin a new literarygenre. She is subtle, but effective. Hermasterpiece, “Pride and Prejudice,” ispossibly the most widely read romanticnovel in the English language. Shepublished a total of six novels, and leftbehind the unfinished manuscript of aseventh. There have been countlessvariations on and adaptations of herworks, which is the reason I am writingthis piece for you. Strangely, all through the past week, Ihave been coming across Jane Austenreferences. The first one was quitesurprising: I was watching the latestepisode of “The Big Bang Theory”(spoiler alert), and suddenly Sheldonsaid that he could not use “Pride andPrejudice” to retaliate against hisgirlfriend Amy. Supposedly, he wastrying to get back at her for ruining amovie for him, so he read Austen’snovel to ruin something she loved for

her. But he couldn’t, because “it’sperfect. He’s proud, she’s prejudiced.”It made me laugh, coming out ofSheldon’s mouth, but it is actually verytrue. Which brings me to the point thatJane Austen, contrary to popular belief, did not write the literary equivalent of“chick flicks.” In fact, her first fans weremale scholars of the time, who were theonly ones who knew about her books. They even called themselves “Janeites,”a term still used today by fans whodeclare themselves admirers of her work(including me). It just so happened that a new movieand a novel based on her books alsocame out this week. On top of thefeeling of shock I experienced half-listening to “The Big Bang Theory,”when I saw that “Austenland” had finallycome out, it felt as if the universe itselfwanted me to reread one of her books.“Austenland” is about Janeites of the21st century visiting a kind of JaneAusten fantasy house, where they canlive under the conditions of those times:the clothes, the rooms, even the socialenvironment. And then, I saw that a newnovel called “Longbourn” has beenpublished, in which the author, Jo Baker, explores the lives of the servants in thehouse of Elizabeth Bennet, Austen’smost famous heroine. So what choicedid I have but to return to my Austennovels? I started with “Pride andPrejudice”: “It is a truth universallyacknowledged, that a single man inposession of a good fortune must be inwant of a wife.” Despite being a girl, I am notparticularly impressed by the romancegenre, generally speaking. I’m not intoromantic comedies, or unrealistic novels

that talk about so-called true love and aPrince Charming. Austen’s books have adifferent feeling to them. They areabout women. She doesn’t just createthe ideal female character that everyonecan relate to, who has minoridiosyncrasies that make her appeardistinctive. She constructs women whohave character flaws and are faced withchallenges that are remedied or resolvedduring the course of the story. One aspect of her works that doesremind me of the traditional romanticcomedy story plot is, apart from theguaranteed happy ending, that the girlresolves her issue. The guy then realizeshow amazing she really is, and they canget married. Despite what I mentionedabout them featuring real characters, and real women, the novels do seem tobe focused around marriage, and theneed for marrying above yourself. However, many critics think she did thison purpose. It seems to me also thatshe presents girls with mothers and/orfriends who can think of nothing but an“advantageous marriage” to criticizewomen’s place in society. She is one ofthe most subtle feminists: she mocksthe societal situation and expectationsregarding women in 19th-centuryBritain through exaggeration. A womanwas not respected unless she gotmarried, and poorer ones could findthemselves out on the street becausevery few had money/land to their names.Property would be transferred to theson. Even in the absence of a son, it didnot go to the wife or daughters, which iswhy Elizabeth Bennet’s mother in“Pride and Prejudice” is so worriedabout her daughters getting married. Jane Austen’s subtlety is significant

because of its take on feminism ingeneral. At the time, there wereemerging female authors who preachedextreme measures and thetransformation of the entire socialstructure. Mary Wollstonecraft was oneof the most prominent writers, publishing “A Vindication of the Rightsof Woman,” a manifesto urging womento free themselves. This kind ofpropaganda usually led to theunderstanding of “victim feminism,”which I don’t much agree with. Thisconcept basically presents women asbeing victimized by society, makingthem out to be superior to men in howthey put up with the situation. In myopinion, this is exactly the kind ofdistinction we need to avoid; womenshould not be put on a pedestal, just asthey should not be treated as if theywere subhuman. Even through her malecharacters, Austen points out the lunacyof these extreme perceptions andimplies that the sexes are equal in termsof their vices and virtues. She especiallydoes this through her first male hero,Henry Tilney of “Northanger Abbey.” Itis as if he is her ally on the inside, helping Austen explain the situation. To anyone who wants to understandhow women think and what they want, Irecommend reading Austen. To theother Janeites already out there, good onyou! In fact, let’s get together and talkabout it. As this piece was a sort of“Intro to Jane Austen,” I have to make alittle note: if you want to get to knowabout the stories without reading all thebooks, “The Jane Austen Book Club” isa wonderful movie to acquaint yourselfwith the Austen world (beware ofspoilers, though). Enjoy!

MUSIC

AIL TO NORWAYThis week I havethree Norwegian bandson the menu for you, allof them quiteextraordinary dishes – sorry, I meanbands. THE SAMUEL JACKSON FIVE

The Samuel Jackson Five (SJ5) is apost-rock band. They have the mellowguitar sound typical of post-rock, andtheir songs are mostly instrumental, which is again a post-rock signature. They sometimes use violins, cellosand even the theremin, generallyplayed by guest musicians on theiralbums. As you can guess from their name, they have a sarcastic nature. I wasreally lucky to see them live about five

[email protected] Özgün (PHYS/PhD)

months ago in Ankara when theyperformed at Voodoo Blues. It was agreat gig, and I had nearly two hoursto chat with them. Along with beinggreat musicians, they are also verymodest. Interestingly, they have reallydifferent tastes in music, but whenthey are on the stage as SJ5, they arein perfect harmony.“Michael Collins Autograph” and“So Many Cowboys, So Few Indians”(again a sign of their sarcastic nature, combined with criticism) are nicesongs for getting acquainted with SJ5.

SOLEFALD

The Norwegian avant-garde duoSolefald (an Old Norse world forsunset) is considered to be one of themost innovative bands to mix blackmetal elements with many differentstyles, opening new horizons for theirsuccessors. Actually, in most of theirsongs one cannot really findtraditional black metal sound, and thatis why they are generally referred as apost-black metal/avant-garde band. Their debut “The Linear Scaffold”started a new trend within theextreme metal scene. They introduced

avant-garde elements to the genrewith their never-endingexperimentation. The band members,Cornelius Jakhelln and Lars AreNedland (Lazare), have played withmany other bands. For example,Cornelius has a solo project calledG.U.T., while Lazare has been playingwith Borknagar since 2000. “The Linear Scaffold” would be agood choice for new listeners. ARCTURUSArcturushas a stylesimilar toSolefald's atfirst glance. However, Iwould say thatArcturus islessexperimentalbut moreprogressivecompared tothe avant-garde duo. Their original line-upfeatures band members from Ulvertogether with the drummerHellhammer (Jan Axel Blomberg),whose name can be encountered quiteoften in the black metal scene. Kristoffer Rygg (aka Garm,Trickster G. and many morepseudonyms), who sang on the band’sfirst three albums -- “Aspera HiemsSymfonia,” “La MasqueradeInfernale” and “The Sham Mirrors” -- has been replaced by Simen

Hestnæs (ICS Vortex) in their latestone, “Sideshow Symphonies.”Interestingly, Garm was also replacedby Vortex after his appearance inBorknagar’s first two albums. Arcturus offers very energeticmusic, with strange yet melodickeyboard patterns combined withrapid drumming, well-written guitarstructures and, of course, Garm'smagical voice. If you ask me, their best work istheir second, “La MasqueradeInfernale.” But specifically for newlisteners, I recommend “Alone” (thelyrics of this song are a poem by EdgarAllan Poe) from that album and“Nightmare Heaven” from “TheSham Mirrors” -- both Arcturusclassics. Now, as a dessert, I ought to makesome concluding remarks. One thing Iwant to emphasize is that so manygenre-bending bands have come upfrom Norway, like Solefald andArcturus. The list can be continuedwith Ulver and many others. Also, Iconsider SJ5 an underrated band; Ithink they would be more famous ifthey were American. But of coursebeing famous or popular does nothave any importance in terms ofmusical quality, and in fact thesethings usually have a negative effecton the music itself. So I want to say“hail to Norway” once more. I hopeyou’ve enjoyed the meal. In the following weeks, I plan totalk about the jazz/fusion movementin the early 70s.

able to attend the classes. When theexam period starts, participationdecreases, but there are still studentswho never miss a class. Students frommany faculties and departments take thecourse. Sorry, but I’ve never taken a dancecourse before.SS: No dance history is needed. If youhaven’t taken ballet lessons, it’s not aproblem. I don’t have dancing clothes and shoes.SS: You don’t have to buy dance clothes, shoes or any other accessories for thecourse. You just need comfortableclothing and shoes to be able to dance. I need to lose weight before I startdancing.SS: If you’re dancing as a hobby, youdon’t need to be fit. I’ve had overweightstudents before. They come to myclasses to learn to dance and lose weight. This is about feeling comfortable whiledancing. If a student is thinking ofbecoming a professional, of courseshe/he should be fit, just as I need to stayfit. This is true for all professionalathletes. I’m too clumsy; I trip and fall even whenI'm just walking! SS: Dancing requires visual memory, coordination, a musical ear andconcentration. These things areimportant, but you don’t know what willhappen if you don’t try. Maybe you’re justclumsy in everyday life, not in dancing.

Which dances do you teach in thecourses? SS: Salsa and Argentine tango. Inprevious semesters, I have taught rumba,cha-cha, swing and Viennese waltz. Itdepends on the students’ interests. Am too I late to start the course? SS: Courses start again each semester. It’s too late for the fall semester, but youcan start in the spring semester after themid-year break. I’m not sure, but I might try dancing.Where is the course held?SS: The course is held at theDormitories Sports Hall.
