Ian Woosnam, OBE Newcastle-under-Lyme Colleges multi award winning Academy of Sport has entered into an exciting new partnership with world famous golfer Ian Woosnam. A new Golf Academy is to be created at the college where students will study a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Performance & Excellence whilst receiving expert guidance in the golf industry disciplines. The ultimate aim is to produce the next generation of top golf professionals, either as players or working within the golf industry. The former World No.1 and U.S Masters winner is renowned for his powerful hitting, competitiveness and natural ability to control the ball. Woosnam was one of the so-called Big 5 along with Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer and Sandy Lyle who dominated world golf in the 80s and 90s. He has won more professional golf tournaments than any other British golfer. Awarded an OBE in the 2007 New Years Honours List, Woosnam has also been named BBC Welsh Sports Personality of the Year and is currently playing in the European Senior Tour and World Champions Tour.Academy of Sport and Ian Woosnam Golf AcademyNewcastle-under-Lyme College scholarship students will attend the Academy on a full-time basis and follow a structured development plan which will be continually assessed by PGA coaches and relevant tutors.Ian Woosnam OBE is one of the UKs most successful and best loved professional golfers.What will I do as part of the Golf Academy?To ensure a balanced learning and development programme which provides multiple employment opportunities, scholarship students will undergo training and skill-based learning in all aspects of the golf industry as well as practical golf tutorship. Support services such as psychology, nutrition, physiotherapy and strength and conditioning training will be provided. What will I study?The Academy will run in conjunction with a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Performance & Excellence that will provide the students the skills and abilities to progress in education, or move into the golf industry through employment. Any questions?What are the entry requirements?In order to join the Academy, students will have to display both golfing and academic abilities in order to achieve a set criteria. A certain level of golf ability will be looked for, and students must achieve the academic qualifications in order to study the course. The scholarship element of the Academy will be based on the students economic background and applications will be assessed on a case by case basis.
