With the DOE loan guarantee for nuclear standing at $18.5B and with average new plant costs being $6B-$8B, it is clear that financing is going to be of huge importance to the industry if new projects are to go ahead.

“New nuclear power plants are large facilities and are expected to cost $6 billion to $8 billion each (2008 dollars). Although projects of this size are not unique in the energy business, such projects typically are built by the major oil companies. The relatively small U.S. electric power companies do not have the financing capability or financial strength to finance nuclear power projects on their own.”

Nuclear Energy Institute, Financing New Nuclear Power Plants, January 2009

There is a pressing need to ensure that financing for new projects is achieved. Without external financing, the majority of projects simply will not go ahead. It is more important than ever for utilities to fully understand all financing options that are available – and how to secure project investment!

Given the huge need for information off the back of this, Nuclear Energy Insider are hosting a new conference in their nuclear series that will look at the major issues associated with financing new build projects in the US.

The Nuclear Investment and Project Finance Conference, November 16-17, 2010 in Washington DC will tackle all of the issues on finance and investment that are stalling the nuclear renaissance.
