SPIE STUDENT CHAPTER ACTIVITY REPORT
April 2018 – April 2019
The list of principal events:
1. On regular base our SPIE chapter organizes the student visits to the exhibitions
connected with optics and photonics:
• “Security and Defense – 2018”, Kyiv, Ukraine – digital cameras, optical sensor,
observation and video equipment;
• “LED Expo – 2018”, Kyiv, Ukraine – LED, LED optics, LED applications –
very bright exhibition in any sense of this word : ) ;
• “Industrial Forum 2018” , Kyiv, Ukraine – laser cutting machines, laser 3D
printers, 3D cameras, optical measurements and optical sensors;
• “Electronic components 2019” - Kyiv, Ukraine – LED, photodetectors, image
sensors, photosensors and etc.;
• “Health 2019” Kyiv, Ukraine – optical microscopes, laser surgery,
ophtalmogical equipment.
2. Vitaly Bortnik presented our chapter at the SPIE Conference “Optics + Photonics 2018”,
San Diego, USA.
3.The delegation of our chapter visited SPIE VIII International Conference on optoelectronic
information-energy technologies "PHOTONICS 2018", Vynnitsa, Ukraine. We made 7
presentations. We participated in the short lecture courses and discussions with other
Ukrainian SPIE chapters.
4. The delegation of our chapter participated the International Young Scientists Conference
“Optics and High Technology Material Science - SPO 2018”, Taras Shevchenko National
State University, Kyiv, Ukraine. We made 5 presentations there.
4. Our chapter organized the section of “Optical instrument-making 2019” at Student
Research Conference “Instrument-making 2018” in our university. We collected the papers
and prepared them for publication in the KPI Proc. There were 9 presentations.
5. On regular base we participated in Open Day Events for schoolboys and schoolgirls in our
university. We demonstrate the optical experiments using SPIE Kits. To involve schoolboys
and students into SPIE Vitalii Antonenko designed, manufactured and demonstrated a
working prototype of a biologically inspired compound eye like in spiders or bugs. It is
possible to investigate how they can see moving objects. It is also possible to use its
components for the other student projects.
6. We presented our chapter at the session at "l'Institut Français d'Ukraine Days" in our
university, Kyiv, Ukraine.
7. Our chapter members took part in the educational program "Zavtra.UA" with optical
projects. It is the largest private program to support talented young researchers in Ukraine,
which is supported by billionaire Victor Pinchuk and its Foundation.
SPIE chapter finances:
April 2018 = 4 640 hrivnas ( appr. 179 $ ). December 2018, SPIE Grant = 13 300 hrivna ( $ 500 ) Expenses:
1. Expenses to visit SPIE conference “PHOTONICS 2018” in Vinnitsa, Ukraine – 5 SPIE members x 5 days:
Train tickets 5 persons – 5 x 400 = 2 000 hrivnas ( appr. 75 $ ) Dayily expenses 5 persons x 5 days – 5 x 5 x 100 = 2 500 hrivnas ( appr. 95 $ )
2. Purchase the optical components for student projects: Photodetectors and chips for a biologically inspired compound eye – 2000 hrivnas ( apr. 75 $ ) Total expenses = 6 500 hrivnas ( appr. 245 $ ) April 2018 = 11 440 hrivnas ( appr. 434 $ ). This is the financial resources of our SPIE chapter now. President: Dmytro Averin Vice-President: Vitalii Bortnik Secretary: Iryna Avdieionok Advisor: Prof. Volodymyr Borovytsky SPIE members:
