Information and communications technology

(ICT) should shift from being a tool for sharing information to being a tool

which enables real human connections. ICT should strive to be intuitive—

supporting people in mutually understanding each other’s thoughts

and feelings, and allowing them to overcome differences in race, sex,

age, culture, and environment.

The ICT industry should not only reduce its own CO2

emissions but also contribute to the reduction of global CO2

emissions by increasing efficiency in all aspects of

modern life.

In cooperation with Toray, NTT has developed and commercialized hitoe, a functional material that can measure biometric information, such as heart rate and electrocardiogram waveform. Simply by wearing clothing that uses this material, consumers will be able to comfortably and easily measure their biometric information in a wide range of daily life activities, such as working, playing sports, or driving.

NTT has developed the world’s first commercial-level secure computation system and confirmed the ability of the system to carry out data analysis processing on a data scale of 100,000 items in a practical amount of time.

Large quantities of data can be statistically processed at a practical speed without restoring the data—guaranteeing information is secure while giving access to remote sources for analysis.

NTT has developed translation technology that works well even with long sentences based on our unparalleled syntax analysis and unique word order conversion

technology.

This is highly effective for translating between languages whose structures are very different from one another, and signifies a major advancement in automated translation.

Since developing the award-winning MPEG4 codec for high-definition video transmission, NTT has been recognized as a global leader in development of video communications technology. In 2014, NTT partnered with NHK, GLOBO and RNP to present live, ultra-high-definition (8k) transmission of the FIFA World Cup from two locations in Brazil to four public viewing locations in Japan. Nine games were successfully transmitted to Japanese viewers in realtime UHD, using shared networks and redundancies to ensure quality and uninterrupted transmission.

NTT R&D is exploring technologies which support efficiency and higher yields for agriculture through use of sensors, remote management of livestock and DNA analysis of crops. Detailed and realtime information about conditions paired with computational systems can reduce labor, improve outcomes, enable efficient use of water and energy, and allow farmers to produce high yields without the use of chemical pesticides or fertilizers.

NTT i³: Applied R&D for the EnterpriseNTT i³ is focused on applied R&D and open innovation as we explore new ways of thinking—and working— which will allow enterprises to become truly digital. We collaborate with NTT labs in Japan and around the world to identify technologies which have the most potential to enable digital business—and then we get to work in our i³ labs, optimizing it for NTT enterprise customers.

Because digital business requires—and enables—new business models and ways of thinking about value, the shift to digital is also an opportunity for NTT and our customers to contribute to our vision of a richer future for society as a whole. Q: What is the relevance of i³ to NTT’s end clients?

We make digital business possible. Our platforms help businesses reimagine value and reinvent operations—connecting them with customers in exciting ways and creating entirely new markets.

Q: Can you give an example of how digital business enables new opportunities for enterprises and customers?

In today’s environment, people are very comfortable using mobile applications. The reason they love using mobile applications is because apps deliver secure, seamless, and context-aware experiences. What that means is you’re able to deliver specific experiences that match the context in which you’re operating. As an example, I have the Starbucks application on my smartphone. As I walk by the Starbucks I automatically start getting offers, and then when I walk into Starbucks I get the ability to pay with my phone. These applications require several pieces of data to be integrated in real time and presented to me in a useful way. And that’s really difficult to do in the traditional environment, because in the traditional legacy application environment you only have one source of data that the enterprise owns. And what today’s mobile applications and the next generation of solutions offer you is the ability to combine data from multiple sources whether you own it or not. You can combine big data with data that is very personal and localized to you on the mobile phone and put them together in such a way that it’s a very unique experience, whether you are in the middle of a transaction or an interaction with an enterprise. This is very difficult to accomplish using traditional methods of data storage and retrieval.

Q: Please explain bimodal IT. Why is it important for businesses today?

Today most enterprises struggle with what Gartner calls “bimodal IT”. Over the years, as technology has evolved, customers have put in several generations of technology layered on top of one another and it becomes

very slow and complex to manage. Enterprises want to move towards going digital—but when they build a new mobile app or user experience, how do they bridge that gap between systems that have to operate at today’s speed and ones that operate at yesterday’s speed?

What solutions does NTT have for bridging this IT gap?

NTT’s bimodal solution is a multi-sided platform (MSP) for IT. The reality is that for enterprises to deliver value to their customers today, they need to connect many applications—old and new— and do it at speed. A multi sided platform for IT is what makes that happen.
