• Six games per day in one venue

• 6x5 = 30 line judges

• More than Beijing

• 6x3 scorers = 18

• More than Beijing

• Why so many? Reserves and uncertainties – and it’s a long road ahead….

Page 12: NTO Briefing Session London 2012. BVF VOLLEYBALL NTO TRAINING MANGEMENT STRUCTURE

• That’s you! …potential performer - experienced and committed

• But you can be better…We can give you the training….

• Question is: How good do you want to be? Can you visualise yourself on the Olympic Field of Play?

• That’s going to be your job – if you want it enough.

Page 13: NTO Briefing Session London 2012. BVF VOLLEYBALL NTO TRAINING MANGEMENT STRUCTURE

• There will be others…maybe better performers than you…

• You have to maintain the pace…• Maintain the commitment…• Train yourself as you are trained…• Your target – be a member of least one of

the teams of NTO's each day in the Olympics – and leave a legacy of experience.

Page 14: NTO Briefing Session London 2012. BVF VOLLEYBALL NTO TRAINING MANGEMENT STRUCTURE

Page 19: NTO Briefing Session London 2012. BVF VOLLEYBALL NTO TRAINING MANGEMENT STRUCTURE

• STARTED in summer 2007 in England

• The Olympic clock is ticking

• The Beach NTO's for Beijing started serious training FIVE years out. So did the Volleyball NTO's…..And their experience was already greater than ours!

• That means we need to catch up fast and be realistic about the task.

• Your existing experience of line judging or scoring may cause you to doubt your importance today.

• This might be because of the type of line judge decision making or scoring you have witnessed

• Or maybe you had a bad experience as a line judge or scorer in another life!

• They train as line judges

• It is seen as important to them

• They work as a team

• They employ military precision

• They are invariably correct

• Their signals are perfect

• They know what to do and when

• They don’t appear surprised – they are POKER FACED

Page 33: NTO Briefing Session London 2012. BVF VOLLEYBALL NTO TRAINING MANGEMENT STRUCTURE
Page 34: NTO Briefing Session London 2012. BVF VOLLEYBALL NTO TRAINING MANGEMENT STRUCTURE

• What philosophy should we cultivate?

• What is the manner of the line judge?

• How do we gauge our own professionalism?

• We need to be able to stand outside and evaluate ourselves

Page 35: NTO Briefing Session London 2012. BVF VOLLEYBALL NTO TRAINING MANGEMENT STRUCTURE

• Rules give the list of functions

• Rules give the list of responsibilities…

HOWEVER

• …do not teach the Manner

• …do not teach the Method

• …do not teach the Style

• …do not teach the Focus

• …do not teach how to cooperate

Page 36: NTO Briefing Session London 2012. BVF VOLLEYBALL NTO TRAINING MANGEMENT STRUCTURE

• They set the level of professionalism:- Through their body language- Eyes looking alert- By giving players confidence to focus on

playing- By making the image of the game better- By allowing fewer arguments- By facilitating the work of the referees- By letting the players entertain

ITO’s & NTO’s are Facilitators

• 1st referee

• Teams

• Spectators

• TV audience

• …even if they don’t realise it

Page 40: NTO Briefing Session London 2012. BVF VOLLEYBALL NTO TRAINING MANGEMENT STRUCTURE

• Remember - Starts before the match….

• - with other line judges

• - with the referees

• - through talk, gesture, body language

• - by exuding professional calm

• - by arriving early

• - by staying at the grouping point

Page 41: NTO Briefing Session London 2012. BVF VOLLEYBALL NTO TRAINING MANGEMENT STRUCTURE

• Maybe it looks slow on TV – the reality is incredibly fast

Page 42: NTO Briefing Session London 2012. BVF VOLLEYBALL NTO TRAINING MANGEMENT STRUCTURE

Remember:

The Rules give a basic framework to our activities as referees, scorers and line judges; We need to understand why the rule is there and what it is for;We need to apply them with common sense;convert KNOWLEDGE into WISDOM.

Remember: the teams have trained for years for this opportunity – for some just being here is a victory. We must allow them to give their best effort – to have their time in the sun
