Alma Fleet - Associate ProfessorWhen I first graduated as a teacher, we all joined the union because as an individual, you’re on your own. Workplace issues are complex and ever-changing. As a union member you have a collective voice, with legal frameworks for expressing dissatisfaction with unfair work practices, and protection against unreasonable employer demands.

Vasantha Saparamadu - Systems EngineerI’m a union member because I believe in collective strength. I wouldn’t have been able to negotiate all union negotiated pay and conditions. I’m a union member because I know that the union will help me fight for justice. When IT Services downgraded my position a few years ago, we went to the industrial commission resulting in a favourable outcome.

Bernard Doherty - Casual Academic Being a casual member of the NTEU allows me to be up-to-date with wider developments in pay-negotiations with the University and provides a sense of collegiality, solidarity and community between fellow casuals and academic staff across different departments. As many casuals reliant on contractual agreements, often of an unsatisfactory “verbal” nature, I believe it is important us to insure that our rights are not the first to be trampled on when pay-cuts are made. Being a member of the NTEU insures that support is there when issues arise.

Dr Kate Gleeson - Australian Research Council Fellow, PoliticsAs a research fellow I design and conduct my own research projects. I have a great deal of autonomy, creativity and independence in my job, which I love. But through my union membership I am constantly reminded that our research takes place in political and industrial environments that we are all working in together. I’m a union member because I want to participate in the collective good of my sector and benefit from the networks of all my peers who do the same.
