God’s Sovereignty▪ Rom 9:1-5

• Paul expresses his passion for the salvation of his fellow Jews

• The Jews were recipients of so much – including numerous covenants by God

▪ Rom 9:6-13 • But not all of Abraham’s descendants were heirs of the promise –

only those through Isaac and Jacob.

• The choice between Esau and Jacob was made by God before they were born!

• (Mal 1:2-3 NKJV) “… "Yet Jacob I have loved; But Esau I have hated…

God’s Right to Choose▪ Rom 9:14-18

• Is it not God’s right to choose on whom to have mercy?

• Pharaoh was chosen to reveal God’s power. (Rom 9:18 NKJV) "Therefore He has mercy on whom He wills, and whom He wills He hardens."

• Did Pharaoh not have a choice?

▪ Rom 9:19-24 • Does not the Creator have the right to do as he wishes over His

creation?

• Is it not God’s right to show mercy to the Gentiles as well as the Jews?

Page 5: NT205 Romans and Galatians Week #6 What about ISRAEL

Israel’s Blindness Predicted▪ Rom 9:25-29

• Vs 25-26 quotes Hosea 1:9-10,2:23: Israel will be alienated from God but ultimately restored.

• Vs 27-28 quotes Isaiah 10:22-23: A remnant of Israel will return to God.

• Vs 29 quotes Isaiah 1:9: Had it not been for God’s mercy, Israel would have been completely destroyed as was Sodom & Gomorrah!

▪ Rom 9:30-33 • Gentiles found righteousness because they pursued it BY FAITH!

• Jews pursued righteousness by trying to keep the Law – which they could NOT! See Luke 18:10-14 as an example.

• Therefore, Christ became a stumbling stone as predicted in Isaiah 8:14, 28:16.

Page 6: NT205 Romans and Galatians Week #6 What about ISRAEL

Zeal but no Knowledge▪ Rom 10:1-5

• The Jews have plenty of zeal but no knowledge.

• Keeping the Law is impossible (Rom 3:20, James 2:10).

• The Law points to our need for a Savior.

• ONLY Jesus fulfilled the Law and is therefore worthy to be our Savior.

▪ Rom 10:6-7 • Quoted from Deut 30:12-13. Obtaining righteousness is not an

impossible journey!

• For ALL that CAN be done HAS ALREADY been done by Christ.

Page 7: NT205 Romans and Galatians Week #6 What about ISRAEL

Righteousness by Faith Explained

▪ Rom 10:8-11• The sinner’s prayer.

• Publicly CONFESSING what we BELIEVE in our heart.

• Christ’s resurrection is proof that His sacrifice was indeed acceptable to God.

• We serve a LIVING Savior, not a dead saint!

▪ Rom 10:12-13 • Jews are saved the same way as Gentiles – BY FAITH!

• Vs 13 quotes (Joel 2:32 NKJV) "And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved…”

Necessity of Preaching the Gospel

▪ Rom 10:14-17• Salvation comes to those who hear the gospel and respond to its

message.

• Vs 16-17 quotes (Isa 53:1 NKJV) “Who has believed our report?”;Isaiah 53 goes on to describe the good news of the gospel.

Unconditional Covenants - 1▪ #1: Abrahamic Covenant (Land, Nation, Blessing)

• (Gen 12:1-3 NKJV) "Now the LORD had said to Abram: "Get out of your country, From your family And from your father's house, To a land that I will show you. {2} I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. {3} I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.""

• (Zec 2:8 NKJV) "For thus says the LORD of hosts: "He sent Me (Messiah) after glory, to the nations which plunder you; for he who touches you (Israel) touches the apple of His eye."

▪ #2: Land Covenant • (Gen 15:18 NKJV) "On the same day the LORD made a covenant with

Abram, saying: "To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates;"

Unconditional Covenants - 2 ▪ #3: Davidic Covenant

• (2 Sam 7:15-16 NKJV) “But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. {16} "And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever."' "“

• Promises a POLITICAL Kingdom and a ROYAL Line.

▪ #4: The New Covenant • (Jer 31:31-34 NKJV) ""Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make

a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah; … {33} "But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. {34} "No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more."“

▪ God keeps these covenants because of HIS sake!• (Ezek 36:22) “… not for your sake, … but for the sake of my holy name…”

Prophecy of Israel’s Return ▪ First, Physically Restored

• (Ezek 37:11-12 NKJV) "Then He said to me, "Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They indeed say, 'Our bones are dry, our hope is lost, and we ourselves are cut off!' {12} "Therefore prophesy and say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, O My people, I will open your graves and cause you to come up from your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel."

▪ Then, Spiritually Restored • (Ezek 37:14,26-28 NKJV) "I will put My Spirit in you, and you shall live, and I

will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I, the LORD, have spoken it and performed it," says the LORD.”… {26} "Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them, and it shall be an everlasting covenant with them; I will establish them and multiply them, and I will set My sanctuary in their midst forevermore. {27} My tabernacle also shall be with them; indeed I will be their God, and they shall be My people. {28} The nations also will know that I, the LORD, sanctify Israel, when My sanctuary is in their midst forevermore.”

Page 13: NT205 Romans and Galatians Week #6 What about ISRAEL

Israel’s Blindness is Partial ▪ Rom 11:1-6

• Has God cast away His people Israel? Certainly Not!

• God always works through a faithful remnant; for example, Elijah who thought he was the only one left who served the true God, yet 7,000 still remained (1 Kings 19:10,18)

▪ Rom 11:7-10 • But the rest were blinded because of the rejection of their Messiah. (Psa 69:22)

• Jesus weeps and declares their blindness as He rides into Jerusalem: (Luke 19:42-44 NKJV) “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. {43} For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, {44} and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”

Page 14: NT205 Romans and Galatians Week #6 What about ISRAEL

Israel’s Blindness is Temporary

▪ Rom 11:11-15 • Israel had stumbled, but did not fall; they are not permanently

removed from God’s plan.

• The rejection of the gospel by the Jews provided more opportunity

for the gospel to go to the Gentiles.

• Paul’s desire is that the Jews would be provoked to a good kind of

jealousy – wanting the same blessings as the Gentiles.

• Yet far too often, rather than showing the Jews the attractiveness of

Christianity, the Gentiles and the ‘church’ have treated the Jews

with hatred, prejudice, malice, and persecution!

Page 15: NT205 Romans and Galatians Week #6 What about ISRAEL

Natural vs. Wild Branches

▪ Rom 11:16-18• Jews are the ‘natural’ branches in the holy ‘tree’ of God.

• Some of the natural branches were broken off.

• Gentiles are the ‘wild’ branches grafted in.

• Paul warns against any pride and arrogance!

▪ Rom 11:19-24 • Branches were broken off or grafted in solely on the basis of faith.

• The wild branches can be broken off too!

• God can also easily graft back in the natural branches.

Page 16: NT205 Romans and Galatians Week #6 What about ISRAEL

The Blindness Ends▪ Rom 11:25-27

• (Rom 11:25-27 NKJV) "For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. {26} And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: "The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; {27} For this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins.""

▪ When? At the Second Coming • One of the main purposes of the Tribulation Period is to to bring Israel back

to God and fulfill her destiny.

• Scripture notes that Israel is always described in the midst of the Tribulation (Jer 30:7)

• It will take this affliction to turn them to Christ: (Hosea 5:15 NKJV) "I will return again to My place Till they acknowledge their offense. Then they will seek My face; In their affliction they will earnestly seek Me.”

Page 17: NT205 Romans and Galatians Week #6 What about ISRAEL

Israel Returns to God

▪ At Armageddon, Israel will be on the verge of extinction, and then they will call on Him!

▪ Zec 12:10-11: Israel Repents• “And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of

Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn. {11} In that day there shall be a great mourning in Jerusalem…”

▪ Zec 13:1: Israel is Cleansed • “In that day a fountain shall be opened for the house of David and

for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.”

Page 18: NT205 Romans and Galatians Week #6 What about ISRAEL

And God Returns to Israel▪ Zec 14:3-4, 5, 8-9:

• (Zec 14:3-9 NKJV) "Then the LORD will go forth And fight against those nations, As He fights in the day of battle. {4} And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, Which faces Jerusalem on the east. {5} … Thus the LORD my God will come, And all the saints with You. {8} And in that day it shall be That living waters shall flow from Jerusalem, Half of them toward the eastern sea And half of them toward the western sea; In both summer and winter it shall occur. {9} And the LORD shall be King over all the earth. In that day it shall be; "The LORD is one," And His name one."

▪ Rom 11:28-32 • Israel is still beloved by God

• For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable!

▪ Rom 11:33-36: Praise GOD!
