ULTRATECH Cement has improved its operating profit marginswhich rose 890 basis points y-o-y to 31.3 % in the second quar-ter of FY10 largely due to lower power & fuel costs, at a timewhen its realisations were under pressure on a y-o-y basis.
Power & fuel costs declined 27.7% y-o-y to an estimated Rs883.4 per tonne during the quarter. The company’s despatchesgrew 10.8 % y-o-y to 3.58 million tonnes in the second quarterof FY 10, but the impact of bunching of additional capacity com-ing on stream in the south and demand lagging behind, was alsovisible on realisations. As a result, UltraTech’s realisations de-clined an estimated 0.8 % y-o-y to Rs 4351.4 per tonne in thesecond quarter of FY10. Apart from the south, UltraTech alsohas a presence in the western and eastern parts, where prices arestill holding up, but that did not prevent a fall in realisations inthe second quarter.
However, a tight check on operating costs helped UltraTech’sprofit after tax rise 52.8 % y-o-y to Rs 250.9 crore in the secondquarter of FY10. The company has a capex plan of Rs 2,000 croreover the next two years, which includes setting up a captive pow-er facility at its plant at Awarpur, Maharashtra, coupled with anadditional grinding unit at its Gujarat facilities. UltraTech’s netcash flow from operating activities was Rs 1457.6 crore in FY 09.

Govt rules out fuelprice hike for now
Our Bureau NEW DELHI
THE government has ruled out any im-mediate hike in fuel prices, despite in-creasing market speculation about a
possible increase because of global crude pricesbreaching $78 per barrel mark, as it feels thestronger rupee has partly negated the effect ofthe rally in crude prices.
“There is no reason for any immediate re-view of retail fuel (petrol and diesel) prices. While crude price internationallyhas risen sharply, the strengthen-ing of the rupee against US dollarhas created a balance where un-der recovery on sales of petrole-um products have been con-tained,” petroleum ministerMurli Deora said at a press confer-ence organised to launch a ruraldistribution scheme for cookinggas. The dollar depreciation hasseen losses incurred by state runoil companies on fuel sales drop-ping to Rs 96 crore per day fromRs 124 crore per day in the firsthalf of October.
“Oil companies are comfortable (in termson realisation on retail sales of petrol anddiesel) at the current level of oil prices, rupee-dollar rate and government policy where un-der recovery is also shared by upstream oilcompanies,” Indian Oil Corporation (IOC)chairman Sarthak Behuria said.
“We can sustain these rates,” he said. IOChas seen its projected losses on fuel sales this
fiscal coming down to Rs 19,790 crore from Rs21,825 crore estimated earlier.
Under recovery (as on October 15, 2009)calculated at current levels of retail price worksout to Rs 0.07 for sale of per litre of diesel, Rs0.83 per litre of petrol, Rs 16.14 per litre ofkerosene, and Rs 204.51 for sale of domesticLPG cylinder. At this level, the annual underrecovery for oil marketing companies worksout to Rs 34,820 crore which is less than theprojections made early this month.
IOC and sister PSUs — HPCL and BPCL —calculate the desired selling pricefor petrol and diesel on 1st and16th of every month based on theprevious fortnight’s average globaloil price. Earlier, Mr Deoralaunched the Rajiv GandhiGramin LPG Vitrak Scheme. Theflagship scheme had been first an-nounced as part of the ministry’s100-day agenda. Initially, thescheme will be launched in eightstates covering 1,200 locations. Itwill help to increase the currentlow penetration of LPG (liquefiedpetroleum gas) in rural areas,
which is less than 20% despite the LPG net-work having an 83% coverage. Vision 2015paper on the LPG sector calls for penetration ofcooking gas in rural areas to reach 75%. Thescheme envisages smaller agencies supplying600 connections compared to 2,500 for a nor-mal dealer. The petroleum ministry is alsoworking on a scheme to provide Rs 1,000 sub-sidy to BPL families for getting cooking gasconnection.

BALAJI Telefilms on Friday announcedlower net profit on the back of reducedincome in the September quarter. Its netprofit dropped 94% to Rs 1.29 crorewhile revenues went down by 60% to Rs41 crore. However, the television andfilm production company saw 2.26%growth in top line quarter-on-quarter.
Almost 83% of Balaji’s total rev-enue’s come from commissioned pro-gramming while the rest, 17% comesfrom sponsored programming. Rev-enues from commissioned program-ming fell to Rs 16 lakh per hour at theend of Q2 from Rs 19 lakh per hour inQ1. But, Puneet Kinra, group CEO, Bal-aji Telefilms says he is confident that thecompany will maintain the same topline for next two quarters.
“The recession resulted in the revenuesfrom the broadcasters dropping significant-ly and this has impacted all the producers.Even in these times we have almostreached break-even point while addingnew businesses to our portfolio,” Mr Kinrasaid. The exit of Star has led to a more di-versified business model since the com-pany caters to more clients now.
