Much of our time in October is devoted to preparations and

performances associated with the Games. Our small groups are

working hard to fulfill all our usual engagements.

When did you join the NSW Police Band and why? First performance with NSW Police Band in 1978 as an 18 year old Police Cadet at Passing Out Parade, Redfern Police Academy. I literally did “pass out” after ten minutes, fainted onto the ground, destroyed the Euphonium and was carried off by my Cadet Sergeant. I transferred from Redfern Police Station to the Band in early 1981. At my interview to join the NSW Police Cadets I remember being asked why I wanted to join the Force. I answered, “To join the NSW Police Band of course!” Why trombone? My ninth grade school teacher gave me a trombone to play. His reason: “Because you have long arms and can reach 7th position!” I played Euphonium a few years later. I have returned to Trombone but enjoy practicing on the Euphonium. As Drum Major, my other “instrument” of sorts is the Drum Major’s Mace. Most rewarding experience? Leading the Anzac Day Police Contingent as Drum Major, wheeling into George Street, hearing the band strike up a Military March and seeing the crowd waving their Australian Flags, what an honour and a privilege.

On October 25, 1959 The Police Band participate in the state funeral of Joe Cahill, Premier of

NSW from

1952-1959.

He died of a

heart attack while still in office

on 22nd October

1959.

On October 20, 1973 Queen Elizabeth officially opens the Sydney Opera House.

In October 1898 the NSW Police Band was asked to perform at the Good Samaritan Carnival in Manly. The band had to decline due to the length of time needed to travel to Manly and back! How times have changed – now we are able to travel as far as Bathurst or Newcastle and back in one day.
