BOWLS NSW • SEP-OCT 20134

While this is the first edition of our new magazine it is, as well, one step in the evolution of our printed dialogue with the bowling community. We hope you

will find something of worth and value in its pages. We hope you will enjoy reflecting on recent events whether you have been a part of them or whether you are wanting to keep your finger on the pulse of what’s happening. We hope inklings of upcoming issues tickle your curios-ity sufficiently to delve deeper into our other arms of communication to complete the circuit of information

available. We hope, if there are hurdles, we find the way to get over them together. We hope there is something here for all our members.

Other media are more interactive or are faster but still, for many of us, there is nothing quite like the feel of pa-per as you turn a page. We encourage you to continue to keep in contact with us this way too, and, with any luck, a little bit of figurative fire-setting too.

Inter-Zone SIdeS ChampIonShIpS

Zone 13 ‘Southerners’ have success-fully defended their maiden 2012

Inter-Zone Sides Championship title, with a 79-61 win in the final over their ‘south-ern’ neighbour Illawarra Zone 16 at Black-town City Bowling Club.

The replay of last year’s Inter-Zone fi-nal had been booked earlier in the day when Semi Final action saw the defending champions Zone 13 defeat hosts Zone 5 84-62, while Zone 16 scored a hard fought 88-72 win over the surprise packet of the championships Zone 8, who proved they can be more than competitive at this level.

For skippers Wayne Turley and John Green, the win completes a ‘grand-slam’ of victories in all major ‘sides’ events for 2013 having been members of the Austral-ian Sides Championship-winning NSW Side in April, as well as winning the Num-ber 1 State Pennant Flag with Taren Point at Merimbula last month. The in-form pair also recently combined to claim both the Zone 13 Pairs and Triples titles with fellow Zone 13 team-mate Reg McCulla.

After a solid 23-15 win over Zone 16’s Robbie Warren in the final to finish the weekend undefeated, Green was quick to praise the performance of his rink of Alex Lee, Peter Hughes and Matt Miles.

“The boys were awesome up-front, and backed each other up well,” commented Green.

Despite the support of Turley’s regular Taren Point pennant rink of Joel Mitchell, Reg McCulla and Cy Threlfall with him in Zone 13 colours, it was not all smooth sailing in the final against the enigmatic skills of Shane Garvey, who in the early

stages played a number of freakish con-version shots to race to a 13-1 lead.

Garvey’s Zone 16 rink of Jesse Noronha, Matt McIntyre and Aaron Teys were not quite able to capi-talise on their early momentum, and the results swung back in favour of the Southerners in the latter half of the game, allowing the Zone 13 rink to claw their way back and salvage a 17-all draw in a very entertaining game.

With Zone 13’s Steve Garry and Ashley Mitchell teaming with joint 2012 NSW Bowlers of the Year, Cameron Curtis and Carl Healey, there was much anticipation leading into the clash against the experi-enced Zone 16 rink of Brett Pieper, Steven Green, Jamie Mitchell and Eric Johannes with both teams entering the final without a loss. It was Healey’s four however that kept their perfect record intact, dominat-ing proceedings against Johannes from the outset to finish 24-11.

The Zone 16 rink of Warren Hamilton, Wayne Crane, Kyle Johannes and Jeremy Henry retained a narrow lead over Craig Scott’s four of Adam Hyland, Neville Hes-sion and Chris Green with the scores at 18-15 after 19 ends when the Illawarra Side shook hands and conceded defeat.

Juniors fire at Warilla

Early July saw all the top juniors in NSW Bowls converge on Warilla Bowling Club to contest

the 2013 NSW Junior Champi-onships, with the zone winners from across the state competing for glory in the disciplines of Sin-gles, Pairs and Fours.

The Singles was the first event played and it ensured the event got off to a quality start, with the final sectional game on the first day providing four critical matches between undefeated bowlers vying to secure a win to claim their spot in the semis. Dy-lan Skinner (Mount Lewis), Dy-lan Wells (Manilla), Corey Wed-lock (Urunga) and Mason Lewis (Merrylands) made the semis.

The semi finals provided some brilliant bowls but two players really shone through to claim their spot in the final, Skinner de-

feated Wells 31-10 and Wedlock defeated Lewis 31-4.

With both Skinner and Wed-lock firing on all cylinders follow-ing their commanding semi final performances the final was sure to be a fine spectacle. Wedlock jumped out of the gates early to lead 9-1 before Skinner caught up at 14-15, from that point on Skinner had the upper hand be-fore a slight fight back at the end from Wedlock. Despite the late fight back, Skinner held on for a 31-28 victory and the title as 2013 NSW Junior Singles Champion.

The Fours sectional play was highlighted by the final game of Section 1 with an entire girls side from Zone 16 (Samantha Noron-ha, Jessica Hili, Dawn Hayman and Natalie Noronha) claiming a one shot win to progress through to the semi finals. Section 2 was won by Zone 7 (Brad Griffiths, Jay Breust, Dylan Cuthbert and Anthony McKenna), Section 3 saw Dylan Skinner keep his dream alive for a second State

2013 Junior Championship

title for 2013 with his Zone 12 side of Jack Williams, Caroline Allomes and Chase McKiernan. The final spot of the semi finals went to Zone 1 (Joshua Bruggy, William Hounslow, Zac Cottam and Luke Jones).

The first semi final between Zone 16 and Zone 7 saw a nail biting affair with Zone 7 claim-ing the last end and the match to beat the girls 17-16. The second semi final saw Zone 12 lead from the outset and claim a 29-19 vic-tory over Zone 1.

In the final, Zone 7 led from the

start before Zone 12 fought back to level the scores on the 19th end. Zone 12 then scored four shots on the 20th end and held on for a 21-19 victory to claim the Junior Fours Championship.

In the Pairs, only four country sides remained in the running and progressed to the semi fi-nals. The semi finalists were made up of Zone 1 (Zac Cottam and Luke Jones), Zone 3 (Jack Whitton and Justin Bullen), Zone 7 (Dylan Cuthbert and Anthony McKenna) and Zone 15 (Jacob Casswell and Luke McBeatty).

In the first semi final Zone 1 pushed away to claim a 22-12 victory over Zone 3 and in the second semi final, Zone 7 claimed a 26-15 over Zone 15.

The Pairs was a great game to finish the Championships with Zone 7 jumping out to a lead before Zone 1 levelled the scores twice on ends 14 and 17. Zone 1 then with all their might to clinch a 20-18 victory and the title of NSW Junior Pairs Champions.

BOWLS NSW • SEP-OCT 2013 7

After nine straight days of rain the sun finally shone through to mark the opening day of the NSW and Queensland Under

18 Test Series played at Taren Point Bowling Club. With fresh faces mixed with some expe-rienced state juniors from both sides the stage was set for a great series.

NSW jumped out of the gates early and never looked back on the opening morning with El-len Ryan winning her opening singles match 21-4. Dylan Skinner closely followed in his singles match recording a 21-15 victory. The fours battles were both very close knit affairs with NSW gaining the upper hand towards the end in both. In the Boys, Corey Wedlock played a match winning bowl with his last to claim a one shot victory.

After a break the second half of the First Test was to be played and QLD were determined not to let NSW continue on from the morning

games. The NSW Boys triples had other ideas and went on to record a strong 27-10 victory. The other match ups were neck and neck all the way with many lead changes through-out. NSW grabbed late leads and held on in both the Boys Pairs and Girls Triples, in the Girls Pairs the QLD pair led by 3 heading into the last end before a brilliant display of draw bowls from the NSW duo of Dawn Hayman and Lauren Shaw saw them pick up a 4 and the match 20-19.

A new day and the start of the Second Test saw Queensland come out as determined as ever to stop NSW from wrapping up the series. Queensland started strong but the NSW side built on the momentum from the First Test, claiming solid wins in both Singles encounters courtesy of Luke Jones and Ellen Ryan, Jamie-Lee Worsnop then guided her Fours side to a 17-14 win before the Boys Fours held on for a crucial draw. Queensland needed to win all the games in the second session to stop NSW from claiming the series before the third test and they started off in the perfect way, jump-ing out to a lead in all matches. With Queens-

land claiming both pairs matches the triples matches would decide the Second Test, NSW fought all the way and claiming a five shot win in the Girls and a nail biting one shot victory in the Boys. These victories ensured NSW would secure both series still with a Test to play.

With NSW having already claimed the series the Third Test was all about pride between the two ‘State of Origin’ counterparts. The NSW Boys and Girls didn’t hold anything back and fought from start to finish claiming all the boys’ matches and three out of four girls matches with Queensland claiming the Girls Singles 21-11.

This resulted in NSW claiming 20.5 out of the 24 rink wins available and the series 3-0 in both Boys and Girls.

NSW Girls Side: Jamie-Lee Worsnop (St Johns Park), Ellen Ryan (Goulburn Railway), Lauren Shaw (Warilla), Dawn Hayman (Fairy Meadow) and Molly Wilton (Maitland City).

NSW Boys Side: Greg Jeans (Glenbrook), Anthony McKenna (Tathra Beach), Dylan Skinner (Mount Lewis), Luke Jones (Evans Head) and Corey Wedlock (Urunga).

W indang Bowling Club was again the host for the NSW Girls Champion-

ships from 4-7 July and with a mix of expe-rienced junior girls and new faces the event was fiercely contested.

The Singles was played over the first two days with 25 girls spilt up into 4 sections to battle for a place in the semi-finals. Four girls went through their section undefeated. These section winners were Dawn Hayman (Fairy Meadow), Ellen Ryan (Goulburn Railway), Natalie Noronha (Warilla) and Jamie-Lee Worsnop (St Johns Park).

With four players in great form and with plenty of confidence, the semis were always going to be great tussles. Ellen Ryan claimed herself a finals berth with a 21-19 victory over

Dawn Hayman and Jamie-Lee Worsnop also recorded a victory with the same score line over Natalie Noronha.

The final also produced end after end high class shots and telling conversions with Ellen Ryan claiming victory over Worsnop to take the 2013 NSW Girls Singles Crown 21-13.

In a different format to the Singles, the Pairs was played over three sections with the sec-tions winner and then next best performed side over the three sections progressing through to the semi finals.

Hot off their run in the singles, Dawn Hay-man and Jamie-Lee Worsnop claimed Sec-tion 1. Section 2 went the way of Warilla twin duo Samantha and Natalie Noronha, with Jasmine Kew (Gilgandra) and Maddison Fen-

nell (Gwandalan) also progressing through this section as the next best preformed overall side. Section 3 was claimed by Singles winner Ellen Ryan and her lead Jodie Marshall (Goul-burn Railway).

Marshall and Ryan progressed first through to the final with a 16-8 victory over Kew and Fennell. The other semi final went all the way down to the wire with an extra end re-quired for the other finals spot. Hayman and Worsnop fought back to force the extra end and then claim the match 17-16 over the Noronha twins.

In the final it was Worsnop’s turn to take the trophy with partner Hayman defeating Mar-shall and Ryan 16-7 to be crowned 2013 NSW Girls Pairs Champions.

It is hard to imagine that in 1936, when the first edition of Bowls in New South Wales Magazine was published, that the NSW Bowling Association’s Board of Manage-ment and Managing Editor would have an-ticipated that some 77 years later (almost to

the day) the ‘Journal’ as it was then known would still be an integral part of the Association and the sport in NSW.

The objective of producing an official monthly journal at the time is best summarised in the editorial feature of the first edition; ‘Every public body requires a medium through which ready communication may be made with its members, as well as to express publicly its policy’.

It is doubtful that anyone in 1936 could have foreshadowed the future advances in technology and communication that today many of us take for granted as part of everyday life. However, it is this founding principle which has ensured the longevity of the official publication of the Associ-ation in its various forms for nearly eight decades.

This month, the Bowls NSW Magazine enters a new era with a fresh image and new format, following the recent decision of the Bowls NSW Board to outsource its production to an ex-ternal publisher.

While this was not an easy decision to reach given the inher-ent connection be-tween the Magazine and the Association, it was in the end a con-sideration of the cost benefits which have been achieved by outsourcing its production and the opportunity for the Association to invest in diversifying how it communicates with members.

As part of the Board’s new communication strategy, Bowls NSW has moved to embrace new technologies and ways of interacting and engag-ing with our members. The Association has never been more accessible and available through our various forms of online and social media com-munication including the Bowls NSW Website as well as our Facebook and Twitter Pages, which are monitored and updated almost 24/7 by Bowls NSW staff.

Together with the printed Magazine, each form of our online communication plays a slightly dif-ferent role in the overall strategy to ensure that there is something for all our members.

In a time of consistently de-clining membership num-bers, how can we possibly think that we are winning, or chalking up successes? The simple truth is, that

membership numbers are only one measure of success. Agreed, they are a really important meas-ure, but in truth the state and national association do not have much control over the member-ship numbers in spite of what many people believe.

While our membership is steadily declining, participation rates are still increasing and don’t look to be abating in the near future. With that in mind, I have been thinking about ways that we can tangibly measure what is happening to our sport. I have come up with four areas

worthy of inclusion. Accessibil-ity, administration, community engagement and social capital.

I believe we are more inclusive than just about any sport, and the measure of that would be in the participation levels of our inclu-sion programs, the diversity of those programs and the number of participants in those programs that go on to become main stream players.

Administration. I think we are more focused than we have ever been on making the sport ac-cessible to more people. With several programs either up and running or in pilot or trial mode the sport is working hard at re-maining relevant.

By any measure of community engagement the sport is in a bet-ter position than it was five years

Participation rates are still increasing

Michael Beaumont, Bowls Operations Manager

Sports Development: Measure of Success

ago. Those clubs that have made an effort to connect or reconnect with their communities have reaped the benefits and those clubs that have failed to change from their isolationist stand have largely gone by the wayside. In today’s society no club can put up the virtual brick wall around their club and greens and expect to be there in five years. Those clubs that fail to connect will vanish.

Social capital is the measure of social connectedness that membership and involvement in a bowling club provides its participants. Research into the area of social connectedness is clearly showing that though so-cial capital is in dramatic decline across the western world, many societies are now realising the importance of belonging and the health, mental and physical ben-efits that stem from membership.

So in conclusion, the numbers don’t make me happy, however, it is not all doom and gloom. If we continue to work hard at improv-ing we will continue to strength-en our position and chalk up the wins that are so important to our bright future.

Taren Point are the kings of Grade 1 bowls and have left Belrose brides-

maids for a third straight year after the 2013 CashBackCity State Pennants final at Club Sapphire Merimbula Imlay Bowling Club.

Belrose were desperate for a break-through win following a heartbreaking loss to Cabramatta last year and defeat to St Johns Park in the 2011 decider.

But Taren Point - who won their only previous Grade 1 flag in 1998 - followed up their 70-43 thrashing of one of the fa-vourites Warilla in their semi-final to post a 65-33 victory at the picturesque South Coast club.

Taren Point dominated the final, lead-ing 38-15 after 30 ends, 41-22 after 35 ends and 55-29 on 45 ends.

Taren Point skips Wayne Turley and John Green were outstanding, with Green named player of the final.

‘‘We went through the season unde-feated and the whole finals was an awe-some team effort. To pick up an individual award just tops it off,’’ Green said.

Turley, a Commonwealth Games gold medallist, was rapt to have won his second Grade 1 flag with Taren Point.

‘‘I’ve been at Taren Point 19 years and am the only survivor from the 1998 win so it’s a great feeling to win again with a club I love,’’ Turley said.

‘‘It was a true team effort from all 12 players. It wasn’t easy, Belrose are a very good side and we just played really good bowls when we needed too.’’

Belrose’s Michael Harvey was full of praise for Taren Point.

‘‘We didn’t play poorly, they just played some whopper bowls at crucial times. We held shot many times but they took us down with some magnificent shots,’’ Har-vey said.

‘‘And Wayne Turley, what can you say, I was playing against him and he was just unbelievable.’’

In the sectional rounds, Belrose were pushed hard by Kurri Kurri before win-ning 58-54 in the opening match at Mer-imbula, but then cruised past Wagga Rules (69-50) and outclassed Lightning Ridge 74-44 to win their section with a whopping +53 shots.

Also in the top half of the draw, Dubbo Railway (Zone 4) had three strong wins and a +49 shot deferential in their section but found Belrose - with Crawford Lin-ton, Steve Vanderveer and Steve Rawlings leading their charge - in another class and went down 67-43.

Tura Beach, who were hosting their first state finals, were proud hosts of sections two and three, featuring defending cham-pions Cabramatta.

The Bullants proved a huge disappoint-

ment - winning only one of their three games - with their semi-final hopes end-ing with a 68-39 thrashing by Taren Point in the final pool game.

Champions Taren Point began with a 69-53 win over Wentworthville Leagues, but the section was up from grabs when Taren Point drew 58-58 with Valentine (Zone 2).

But with the inspirational Turley leading the way and current New Zealand repre-sentative and world champion of cham-pion singles winner Ali Forsyth, Taren Point clinched the section by beating Cabramatta and then knocked out Warilla in the semi-final.

Warilla had already clinched their Wa-rilla section after big pool wins on the Sat-urday against Tathra Beach (68-40) and Cowra (83-30).

But they stumbled in their final pool game 54-53 to Alexandria-Erskineville and though section winners were over-whelmed in the last 30 ends by Taren Point in their semi. In a remarkable turna-round Warilla led Taren Point 40-39, but were then belted 70-43.

Meanwhile, Michael Wilks, bowls co-or-dinator for Club Sapphire Merimbula said the finals were probably the biggest bowls event held by the club.

‘‘The interest was enormous and not

just from the bowls community but non-bowlers,’’ Wilks said. ‘‘The build up was fantastic, there was a real buzz around the town that the likes of Leif Selby, Jeremy Henry, Wayne Turley and some the other best bowlers in Australia were coming to our clubs.

‘‘It has been a long time planning for such an event and an enormous amount of hours have gone in. We held the grade four finals back in 2010 so we had some idea of what to expect but getting the number 1 grade was really special. It’s the pinnacle of bowls in the state.’’

Club Sapphire Merimbula boast one of the biggest age gaps of members of any club in Australia and in the coming year will have four-year-old Jamie Taylor signed up as a full junior member and 94-year-old Peter Bradley still actively participating in their Tuesday social com-petition.

The club literally has a place for bowlers of all age and experience.

Meanwhile for Tura Beach Country Club hosting the state finals was a whole new experience, according to Wilks.

‘‘They really embraced it. I don’t know if they have even hosted a zone final before. They were really happy to show off their club and facilities and what they have to offer.’’

Nelson Bay BC welcomed sides to the CashBackCity State Pennant Grade 2

Finals. With clear skies, little wind, and a sparkling sea there was the promise of su-perlative bowls. The greens were in great condition, and worthy of a finals playoff.

In Round 1 many early matches were competitive after a few ends, however several clubs showed improvement mid-match to edge ahead.

Walgett staged a late recovery over Cootamundra Country Club, while Nar-romine fell just short of catching Grenfell. Maitland City and Bulli had good wins, as did The Entrance, with Narooma having a narrow win over Soldiers Point. There were two close matches in Section 4 with St Johns Park and Alexandria-Erskineville defeating Kew and Harbord.

While the breeze had increased at the start of Round 2, a similar pattern emerged, with Cootamundra Country

Club, Narooma and Harbord showing good form. St Johns Park and Alexandria-Erskineville had a close tussle, with St Johns Park getting good results later in the match to emerge comfortable winners. After two rounds, Bulli, Narooma and St Johns Park, with 4 points each, led their sections while Section 1 was open with all four clubs holding 2 points.

The third round produced some upsets. Narromine defeated Cootamundra Coun-try Club to win their section, while Bulli won all three rounds to progress to the semi-finals. Narooma had a loss to Alston-ville, and scraped home in the section, 2 wins +10 to Soldiers Point 2 wins +9. In Section 4, Harbord defeated St Johns Park and won the section with 2 wins +45 against 2 wins +21.

The semi-final between Bulli and Nar-romine got off to a flying start for Bulli, who went on to win comfortably, which

showed good prospects for the final the next day. The other semi final between Narooma and Harbord was much closer, with Harbord eventually winning by 12 shots despite losing two rinks.

The weather for the final was perfect for bowls, with a clear sky and no wind. Har-bord took a small early lead, and despite Bulli getting close on several occasions, and the rinks being 1½ each, Harbord fin-ished as winners of the Grade 2 Pennant.

The eventual winners, Harbord, showed excellent form as a side through the whole of the competition, with one team per-forming sufficiently well to cover any problems with the other two teams. The strong Harbord rink varied from match to match and it was a great effort from all 12 players. The weather during the event was good, and Nelson Bay BC is to be congrat-ulated for staging this event which was top class in every aspect.

Revesby Workers showed the value of experience to win a see-sawing final

against Taren Point and clinch the Cash-BackCity State Pennants Grade 3 champi-onship.

The Zone 12-based Revesby Workers went through the three days at co-hosts Towradgi Park and Wiseman Park-Wol-longong City bowling clubs unbeaten, and outlasted Taren Point 60-56 in a terrific final.

Taren Point won two of the three rinks and led 51-46 but Revesby Workers stormed home in the final 11 ends.

Revesby Workers skip Frank Schocher and his team proved the difference with a 30-14 win over Murray Chapman and partners.

The Zone 13-based Taren Point won the other two rinks with Spencer Puttick beat-ing Geoff Barron 17-16 and Alan Layton overcoming Warren Gibson 25-14.

‘‘It’s big to win a state flag,’’ Revesby Workers team manager Ray Hopkins said.

‘‘We’re a pretty experienced group who love our bowls.

‘‘About five years ago the Workers club merged with the Revesby club and last year we amalgamated from the bowls side of things.

‘‘A few of the team from the Revesby era have won a state flag back in 2009 but it is new territory for Revesby Workers.’’

While it was a first state flag win for Revesby Workers BC, Revesby beat Taren Point in the Grade 3 decider in 2009.

Taren Point’s Grade 3 team manager Garry Williams has been involved with the club since 1995 and even though they didn’t win the state title he said it was still a great day for the club.

‘‘It’s terrific for Taren Point to have a team in the final in a lower grade,’’ Wil-liams said.

‘‘There’s sometimes a big focus on the top grade but we have seven grades at our club and want to encourage players through all the grades. ‘Getting to a final shows we have depth but also that you can come on down and play in a lower grade and still have a shot at winning the zone and getting through to state title.’’

Taren Point have around 120 bowlers and while the club was cheering on their No 1 Grade to the state flag at Merimbula, the Number 3 grade have done the club proud with two finals appearances in five years.

Williams’ only regret was that he was left to manage to side, rather than take his place as a player.

‘‘I lost my spot basically due to taking an overseas holiday to the United States. The guys were going so good there wasn’t a spot back for me, so I added the manag-ing duties.

‘‘It’s a great group of players who have played so well to make it to a state final.’’

Taren Point were in good touch right through the three days and beat Temora (Zone 13) 65-60 in a hard-fought semi-final.

Taren Point won their three sectional games comfortably - beating The Hills District (Zone 10) 75-45, then Woolgool-ga (Zone 14) 70-60 and Leichhardt (Zone 11) 73-51. They were the only team in their section to win more than one game.

Revesby Workers also had three section wins, beating Ettalong Memorial (Zone 15) 61-50, Lismore City (Zone 1) 59-47 and Bega (Zone 7) 70-46.

Revesby Workers were strong 72-48 winners over Picton (Zone 5) in their semi-final.

Towradgi Park played host to one of

the most bizarre sections of any grade in the finals. Temora and Inverell both won two games but finished with an identical -1 shot differential. Temora advanced to the semis having conceded 11 less shots to their opponents than Inverell over the three pool games.

Ironically, the only team in the sec-tion with a positive shot differential was Forbes (+2) but they only won one game.

The three day carnival was also of huge benefit to its Zone 16 hosts - Towradgi Park and Wiseman Park. Both are among Illawarra’s most progressive clubs with Towradgi BC having some the finest fa-cilities in the region.

Under new bowls coordinator Wes Fal-coner, who moved from Warilla BC at end of 2012 to join Towradgi, the northern Ill-awarra club managed to stay in the tough

Premier Division of Zone 16 after winning promotion in 2012. Ironically, Towradgi is the last Illawarra club to win the state No 1 pennants title, back in 2007.

Meanwhile Wiseman Park boast Aus-tralian squad member Shane Garvey as their bowls coordinator and the club has shown ambition in 2013 by not only host-

ing a state final but also hosting the NSW vs Victoria series in Mens, Womens and under 25s earlier this year.

The club wants to be at the forefront of major events in coming years and won widespread praise for how the New South Wales v Victoria series and state playoffs were run.

A small piece of history was created when Tweed Coast clubs Kingscliff

Beach and Cudgen Leagues Bowling Clubs were bestowed the honour of hosting the Grade 4 State Pennant Finals as a State Pennant Final series had never been held previously north of Ballina in the State’s far north.

Both clubs with the pivotal assistance of their staff and all the volunteers did a mag-nificent job in playing the role of the perfect hosts and certainly deserved all the acco-lades that came their way from the play-ers and supporters. Prior to the event the Tweed had experienced yet another bout of heavy rain which had plagued the area for much of the year but the winter weather was on its best behaviour over the 4 days of the event which allowed the greenkeepers to present their greens in an immaculate condition.

The 16 finalist sides which had travelled from many parts of the State began to ar-

rive on the Thursday and by Friday all had arrived and quickly took the opportunity to gain valuable practice and familiar-ise themselves with the greens at the two clubs. The contesting sides represented clubs from both large to the very small but all were determined to do well and were hopeful of being able to claim the ultimate prize by the completion of the competition.

On the Saturday the sectional play be-gan in brilliant sunshine and a number of sides including Harbord, St. Johns Park, Scone, Bathurst Majellan, Grafton, Nelson Bay, Bulli and Francis Drake all began well but a number of upsets were forthcoming including St. Johns Park which was held to a draw by North Ryde RSL then beaten by Harbord who had earlier been beaten by Cootamundra Ex-Services. Scone retained its good form by knocking both Inverell East and Majellan out of contention while The Entrance had found the going tough and fell to both Scone and Majellan.

Nelson Bay had stamped itself as one of the favoured combinations but after 2 wins was upset by Grafton which had suf-fered an earlier setback at the hands of Merimbula which also made a late run for the semi finals following an early loss but Maroubra RSL found the opposition a little too hot on the day. Bulli also established itself as a favourite despite being held to a 3rd round draw by Baradine which had also made a late tilt at being a section win-ner while Francis Drake had its chances severely dented by Bulli and Nambucca Heads did not have much luck at all in ex-periencing 3 narrow losses.

The eventual section winners were: Sec-tion 1 Harbord with 4 points + 29 margin; Section 2 Scone 6 points + 50; Section 3 Grafton 4 points + 31 and Section 4 Bulli 5 points + 41.

The semi finals provided excellent spec-tator entertainment as Scone took on Har-bord and the scores were close early before

Scone began to get the better of the duel to open up a handy lead and appeared des-tined for victory and despite a fight back by Harbord towards the end of the match Scone held on to score a fighting 60/49 vic-tory and a place in the final. The remain-ing semi final between Grafton and Bulli eventuated in to a real cliff hanger after Grafton led early but were overtaken and Bulli then built up a 7 or 8 shot lead which it maintained for much of the match and victory was certainly within its grasp. As the match entered its final stages, the lights

had been switched on as ends were killed and darkness began to fall and suddenly Grafton hit the front after it had grabbed a vital 7 shots on one end. The spectators were on the edge of their seats as both sides traded shots as they strived for victory but as the ends ran out Grafton finally held on grimly to claim 2 shots on the final end for a dogged 61/57 win and the remaining place in the final.

The final commenced in brilliant weather and it was Scone which had the flying start and led 20/6 before Grafton hit its straps and began to make inroads into the deficit to trail 20/25 after 25 ends then eventually hit the front and led 27/26. Scone appeared somewhat shell shocked as Grafton built on its lead and led 52/44 after 50 ends on

entering the final ends held a 14 shot lead. Scone battled valiantly and managed to more than halve the leeway but finally time and the ends ran out and Grafton grafted out a well deserved 63/58 victory to claim the much sought after winner’s flag while Scone which was gallant in defeat had to settle for the runner up flag. The players and side managers of both sides also re-ceived their respective State pennant badg-es in recognition of their fine achievement.

The winning Grafton side was B. Rap-ley, D. Morgan, K. Garner, R. McWaters, R.

Power, S. Mepstead, W. McLeod, K. Landri-gan, G. Harrison, I. McMillan, G. Maxted, A. Knox, W. James, R. Toovey and Side Man-ager R. Robinson. The gallant Scone side was B. Cone, D. Campbell, G. Davidson, W. Styles, G.Simpson, T. Wells, K. Katon, M. Mabbott, H. Bourke, J. Jenkins, J. Wicks, D. Riley, G. Riley, N. Crandell and Side Man-ager B. Johnstone.

The players and supporters from all of the visiting sides were extremely high in their praise for the two clubs and their facilities as well as the hospitality afforded to them and while number of them and supporters remained to take in the many areas of inter-est around the Tweed District, many others vowed that they would certainly be making a return visit to the Tweed in the future.

The final was played between Goodooga and Soldiers Point Bowling Clubs with

Goodooga winning by 74 to 44.The weather was fantastic for the three days

of the finals with barely a cloud in the sky but occasionally a breeze, strong at times. The matches were played at Taree Leagues and Taree Railway Bowling Clubs and the greens were in excellent condition. Someone said that the greens at Taree Leagues are the best in the State.

On the Saturday morning at Taree Leagues, after proceedings were opened by the Mayor of Greater Taree City Council Paul Hogan, Bathurst City had a big win over Carlingford as did St Johns Park over Dalmeny. St Johns Park struggled early in the game but then es-tablished their superiority. Goodooga had a big win over Windang and Dee Why finished on top of Umina Beach. Over at Taree Railway Tumbarumba, North Haven, Dubbo Railway and Soldiers Point all had wins.

In the company of Bruce Elliott, Zone 6 President, I spent the afternoon at Taree Rail-way where Gladstone Park and East Maitland had the wins in Section 3, as did Maclean and Soldiers Point in Section 4. Back at Taree Leagues the winners were Goodooga and Windang in Section 2 and Bathurst City in Section 1, while St Johns Park and Carlingford played a 64-64 draw.

At the end of the day Bathurst City, Goodoo-ga and Soldiers Point had all had two wins to lead their sections. In Section 1 St Johns Park with a win and a draw were sitting right be-hind Bathurst City and in Section 3 all clubs had one win each.

Round 3 on Sunday morning is always the critical round. Bathurst City and St Johns Park were drawn to play each other. What a game it turned out to be! It ended with a four point difference in favour of St Johns Park but it was a gripping match where the scores were close all the way.

In Section 2 Goodooga had another big win to finish on top with three wins and a margin of 68. In Section 3 where all clubs had been equal the night before, Tumbarumba and Gladstone Park were the winners and Tum-barumba won the Section with a plus 29 margin.

The shock of the morning occurred when Dubbo Railway defeated Soldiers Point in Section 4 64-53. This win meant that Ma-clean, Dubbo Railway and Soldiers Point had all had two wins. However Soldiers Point won the Section with a superior margin of 32.

The semi final at Taree Leagues was be-tween St Johns Park and Goodooga while the semi final at Taree Railway was between Tumbarumba and Soldiers Point. I would have liked to have seen both matches but it was not possible so thinking that Goodooga would win the first I chose to spend the after-noon at Taree Railway. I was correct but the result was a margin of 2 and as the old saying

goes it “went down to the wire”. Everyone who saw it said it was a wonderful game of bowls. However Goodooga was the sentimental fa-vourite of the crowd and drew resounding ap-plause for their efforts.

The match between Tumbarumba and Sol-diers Point was also a thriller with the scores very close at the end and the lead changing at the end. The margin was 3 with Soldiers Point winning 58-55. The match all depended on the last bowl and the Soldiers Point skip moved his own bowl a little too far.

The final day, again with wonderful weather, was played at Taree Leagues. Dave Penman at Taree Leagues had the match under way on time again as he had each day. During this

match our photographer, who had a drone with a camera in it, flew the drone at the back of the green to take numerous photographs of the action without disturbing the players. There were some wonderful action photographs.

This was always going to be an interesting game as Goodooga had tremendous support from the local crowd. We had heard that one of the Goodooga skips had lost his bowls in the river and had to borrow a set from a local play-er. We also heard that Goodooga did not have their bowling green capable of being used so they had been driving to Lightning Ridge to play bowls including their pennant matches, a two hour drive for each game.

For those looking for a tight match to finish off proceedings, this was not to be, as Goodoo-ga, although threatened in the middle of the match, when the gap in scores closed to 6, al-

ways appeared to be in control. One particu-lar game between Jackson and Braye was very close all the way through with Braye of Soldiers Point eventually winning by 2. He was down 4 with one bowl to play and drew the shot.

The final was played with tremendous sportsmanlike spirit between the two sides, a great advertisement for the sport of bowls.

This event was very well organised in a very professional manner by the two clubs. All the people involved undertook a magnificent effort but the following people should be thanked: from Taree Leagues –Annette Camp-bell President Taree Leagues Sports Club, Greg Campbell President Men’s Bowling Club, Da-vid Brann Sec-Mgr and Dave Penman Bowls Co-ordinator and from Taree Railway – David Lynch President, Peter Lane Sec-Mgr and Tony Chicken Bowls Co-ordinator.

Illawarra’s Fairy Meadow has secured their first ever State Pennant Flag after

an 80-39 victory over Grafton. For five of the Fairy Meadow players the

match provided an opportunity to make amends for their 2011 Grade 6 State Pen-nant Final loss at the hands of Mounties. And it was an opportunity which they grabbed with both hands.

Fairy Meadow were the stand-out side following sectional play, finishing as the only 3-game winners in Section 3. The Zone 16 Club served up solid performanc-es against the fancied St Johns Park from Zone 12, South Sydney Juniors (Zone 11) and country boys Cootamundra Country Club to take the section with a plus 70 shot margin.

Runners-Up Grafton cruised through day 1 with two easy victories over Woy

Woy (Zone 15) and Moruya (Zone 7), but struck a small hurdle with a narrow 2 shot loss to a determined Sylvania Side from Zone 13 on Sunday morning. With two wins and a plus 50 shot margin, Grafton were able to claim the section over Sylva-nia who could only manage a shots differ-ence of plus 12 from their two wins.

Section 2 was taken out by Stuarts Point (Zone 14) with two wins plus 46, from Zone 5’s Wallerawang who also finished with two wins, but a lesser margin of plus 10 shots despite beating the section win-ners in round 2.

Zone 9 champions Dee Why looked promising after round 1, scoring a com-fortable win over Wallerawang, however after an agonisingly close 1-shot loss in round 2 against West Tamworth, the north shore side had nothing left in the tank for

Sunday morning against Stuarts Point go-ing down by 45 shots. Section 4 saw one of the closest finishes ever witnessed at a State Pennant Final with a count-back of shots scored against the only way that Zone 10’s Merrylands and Zone 4’s Gil-gandra could be separated after both fin-ishing their sectional rounds with 2.5 wins and a plus 47 margin.

With Merrylands playing on their home greens, there was a feeling of ‘what could have been’ for players and supporters alike, after it was announced that Gilgan-dra had claimed the section having had 154 shots scored against compared 156 scored against Merrylands.

It was certainly bittersweet for the host club’s players, who whilst unlucky not to advance to the semi-finals, could optimis-tically hold their heads high knowing that

they had finished the weekend unde-feated. Both Semi-Finals produced some amazing bowls from all four sides culmi-nating in nail-biting finishes.

Grafton after their loss earlier in the day overcame Stuarts Point in the final ends to claim a 66-59 win and book a place in the final, whilst the semi-final between Fairy Meadow and Gilgandra required an extra end to find a winner.

Trailing by a shot heading into the 63rd and final end of the match, Fairy Meadow managed to tie up the scores at 53-all with their final bowl, with players and spectators glued to the edge of their

chairs with the shot bowl only confirmed with a close measure.

After all rinks had completed one extra end, it was Fairy Meadow who came up trumps, with two of their rinks scoring 2 shots each, while Gilgandra claimed just 2 shots on the remaining rink to give the Illawarra Side a 2-shot win 57-55 to pro-gress to the final.

The determination of the Fairy Mead-ow side was clear from the outset in the final, with all rinks jumping out of the blocks to set up an early lead which they maintained throughout against a valiant Grafton.

Dubbo, with a population of 40,000 peo-ple, is situated in the centre of NSW

and is the hub of the Central West. Just five hours drive from Sydney, the city is also halfway between Melbourne and Brisbane.

Dubbo has a myriad of tourist attractions, most notably the Western Plains Taronga Zoo and the Old Dubbo Gaol. With plenty of accommodation available, Dubbo offers the keen shopper a wide variety of outlets for their pleasure. Dubbo has four bowling clubs, all within 3 minutes drive from the city centre, and visitors are most welcome at all four clubs – Dubbo City, Dubbo Mac-quarie, Dubbo Sporties and Club Dubbo.

The 2013 Cashback City State Number 7 Pennant was held in Dubbo on the first weekend in August, with Sections 1 and 2 at Dubbo Sporties (Dubbo Railway) and Sec-

tions 3 and 4 at Club Dubbo (West Dubbo). The speed of the greens at both clubs was about 15 seconds, and the breezy condi-tions on the first two days provided a stern test for all bowlers.

Bowls NSW President, Vince Beard, was in attendance to open the tournament on Saturday morning, and to present the win-ners and runners-up with their flags and badges after the final at Club Dubbo on Monday afternoon.

In Section 1, Grafton went through to the semi-finals, despite losing its last round against The Hills District, who finished with the same number of points but could not match Grafton on points for and against.

Lightning Ridge went through Section 2 undefeated with big wins in their first 2 matches, but Coleambally put it right to

them in the last round, going down by three on the last end.

In Section 3, Figtree RSL were also unde-feated in their preliminary rounds, but sur-vived a scare in their last game when they had to produce 12 shots in the last three ends to beat a determined St Johns Park and deny them victory in the section. Har-rington won Section 4, again undefeated in their three games. All teams in Section 4 (Morisset Hospital, Ettalong Memo-rial, Sawtell and Harrington) were evenly matched, but Harrington was spurred on in all their matches by their very large and vocal group of supporters.

And so to the semi-finals!At Dubbo Sporties, Grafton and Lightning

Ridge were evenly matched and after 18 ends, Grafton led by 5 shots (21 – 16). At the

halfway stage (30 ends), there was nothing in it, with Grafton just ahead 30 – 29, and by the 44th end, the teams were locked at 40 – all. Lightning Ridge then used all their experience to apply the screws to their op-ponents and surged to a 55 – 44 lead after 51 ends. From there, Lightning Ridge were not to be denied, and they held their ad-vantage to triumph 68 to 58.

In the second semi-final at Club Dubbo, Harrington went to an early lead after 10

ends, but Figtree RSL soon found their range and began to claw their way back into the match. After 30 ends, Figtree had opened up a 6 shot lead (33 – 27), but Har-rington struck back to level the match at 37 all after 38 ends. Not to be overawed, Figtree dug deep and started to apply the pressure, and by the 50th end, had forged to a 55 – 42 lead. The Figtree boys, inspired by their ardent supporters, came away for a 66 – 54 victory.

RESULTS

A bright and crisp morning greeted the Lightning Ridge and Figtree RSL teams and supporters for the final at Club Dubbo on Monday morning. After 10 ends there was not much in it, as Figtree, 11, led Lightning Ridge, 10. However, by the 20th end, Figtree had opened up a 24 to 12 lead over the boys from the Ridge. At the 30th end, Lightning Ridge had edged closer to Figtree, but still trailed 23 – 31.

Into the second half of the final and Figtree were still in front 37 – 31 after 40 ends.

Then the boys from the bush put their foot down. After the 46th end, the Ridge had hit the lead 42 – 39, and were still three ahead after the 52nd end (49 – 46).

Figtree hit back and on end 56, the scores were locked at 51-all. What tension!

However, when it came to the nitty gritty of the concluding ends, Lightning Ridge rose to the occasion and came away to win 62-54.

The difference was the rink skipped by Rob Williams, whose team won 26-16.

Congratulations to both teams on the manner they conducted themselves

throughout the game. It was the boys from the bush who managed to overcome their coastal opponents.

500 players and supporters converged on Dubbo for the event, and everyone was glowing in their praises of the greens and organisation at both clubs. Bowls’ Man-agers, Vic Simpson (Dubbo Sporties) and Anthony Brown (Club Dubbo) and their respective committees, did a mountain of work to ensure everything ran smoothly and that all players’ and spectators’ needs were met.

NSW winners over WA and VictoriaDuring the week com-mencing Monday 18 February 2013, an Australian Inter-State competition was held in Perth between the Social Hellenic Bowlers from the three States.

A team left Sydney to regain the shield which was provided by the NSW sponsors, the DelphiBank (subsidiary of Bendigo Bank). The hosts were the Hellenic Bowling Club of WA, and the venue was their host club, the Osborne

Park Bowling Club. A beautiful club with five greens, running about 16-17 seconds, in the hot WA climate.

Monday was the first game WA against NSW, where NSW won 5 to 1. Tuesday morning WA played Victoria: WA were the winners 5 to 1. Tuesday afternoon NSW played against Victoria, with NSW runaway winners 6–nil.

Final score: NSW 11 points, WA with 6 points and Victoria 1 point.

Wednesday night was the presentation dinner dance at the Floriat Athena Soccer Club.

Over 120 bowlers and guests enjoyed a wonderful evening, where the President of the WA club, Teli Yakalis, presented the Shield to the NSW President, John Prineas (Maroubra Club member). Next meet will be in Melbourne March 2014.

Buddy Day at Bateau Bay

The challenge was to get as many non bowlers and Bateau Bay Bowling

Club bowlers as possible, play-ing Lawn Bowls together at The Bay Sports Club at Bateau Bay.

Sunday on the Queen’s Birth-day long weekend was the day. But would people come along?

Buddy Day was a chance to introduce prospective new bowlers to the surprising game of Lawn Bowls. The concept has been tried elsewhere and was proposed to the Club by the Bateau Bay Bowls Coordinator Kevin Trezise.

Two Bowls Committee mem-bers, Ray Peck and Michael Peck, took up most of the or-ganising for the day and they were well supported by a small army of helpers.

The Bateau Bay Bowling Club members were asked to find a buddy, a relative, a neighbour, a friend and bring them along

for a game of bowls. The hope was to get 25 bowlers and 25 non bowler buddies onto the greens.

What happened? Over 200 people attended Buddy Day Of that, there were 84 bowl-ers and 84 buddies out playing bowls. Three greens full with 168 bowlers all having a great time! Buddy Day was support-ed and sponsored by the Peck family business NEUsolutions, The Bay Sports Club and parent club Canterbury.

A perfect day saw a BBQ, plen-ty of prizes, a big Spider with 168 bowls colliding in the middle of the green trying to claim one of the 73 prizes on offer.

This was followed by two games (10 ends) of bowls for everyone, with bowlers and

buddies all playing together, with more prizes on offer.

By the finish of the day many of the buddies were express-ing a keen interest in taking up bowls as their new game of choice and just under 20 of those people put their name down for the free bowls coach-ing in the following weeks. Indi-cations are many more will be following them.

What started as a very simple idea brought a large number of happy people, grandparents, parents and teenagers, all to-gether in a great environment.

The game of bowls has been around for a few centuries, but in 2013 it is now being redis-covered as a sport of choice for men, women and families of all ages.

Valentine lakes bowlers have created history by winning the Blue Ribbon Zone 2 Major Singles Championship and the State Senior Singles Championship for the second consecutive year. The finals in both championships were outstanding games of bowls John Lindsay (Hamilton North) recorded his biggest success in lawn bowls winning the Restrict-ed Singles title with a hard fought 25/21 victory over Bruce Alexan-der (Raymond Terrace). Lindsay

recovering from a slow start being down 11-6 after 12 ends. He performed similarly against Jim Hillhouse (Valentine) in the semi-finals fighting back from an 8-0 deficit after 6 ends to win 25-19. Alexander led all the way to beat Danny Moore 25-18 in the second semi-final. A report will be in next month’s Bowls NSW on the Mens Fours, Mixed Pairs, Mens Open & Restricted Pairs & the Frank Neat Memorial K.O. Club Nominated Mens Triples.

Congratulations go to both Goodooga and Lightning Ridge clubs for their success in the State pennant playoffs. The Goodooga Number 5 side’s effort was particularly noteworthy as their side was the only Pennant team entered from that club.

A number of years ago Goodooga won a No 7 State flag, so they will now have two State flags which is an excellent effort for a club which only fields one pennant team. Lightning Ridge also excelled themselves in win-ning the No 7 State flag. When

one considers that Goodooga travelled to Armidale Ex-Services (also in Zone 3) for the Zone 3 playoffs, it makes their effort all the more meritorious, as the trip to Armidale is a six-hour drive. The Lightning Ridge bowlers also travelled a long way, and one trip was 4.5 hours. Zone 3 looks forward to the flag unfurling’s. Both clubs could be regarded as being in the outback areas of New South Wales, and their perfor-mance is highlighted by the very long distances these sides have to travel to compete. Lightning Ridge also competed in the No 1 pennant playoffs, and Goodooga is a one-team club which relies on voluntary labour for the ad-ministration of their club.

Club Dubbo with West Dubbo Men’s B owling Club conducted Noel Soane junior lawn bowls recently. Played over two days in beautiful spring weather, twenty nine teams competed in both divisions, the local teams doing zone 4 proud! In the under 14 division West Dubbo junior Ka-lium Jones & Soldiers Point Mitch Bellingham won their five games!

They were the only team to do so. Runner up in this division was the team from St John’s Park Jamie Allomes & Grey Heming-ton, winning four games and 79 points. 3rd was Troy Xue & Luke Cronan from Asquith, four wins and 74 points, 4th spot Jamie McDonnell (Halekulani) & Tyson Pennell (Kandos).

In the 15 to 18 years: winners from Dubbo City & Dubbo Rail-way Brad Barrow & Jono Davis winning 5 games and 85 points, they were the only team in this division to win all 5. In 2nd spot also local team from Gilgandra &

Nyngan Jasmine Kew & Jake Wa-terhouse 4 wins & 80 points. 3rd spot went to Ethan Mills & Jamie Lee-Worsnop (St John’s Park) 4 wins & 77 points. 4th spot Kane Agar & Jessie Herbert from East Maitland 4 wins & 75 points.

The event had 2 state junior selectors at this event casting an eye over the junior’s bowlers for the 2014 squad. Bowls manager (Anthony) on behalf of West Dubbo Juniors presented a gift to Sharyn Renshaw (St John’s Park Junior Bowls Coordinator) for bring 5 teams from this event. West Dubbo juniors are hoping to do a reciprocal for their event in late October. Stand by for more information on that.

The tournament was great success for the sport lawn bowls in Dubbo, with great accolades from all the parents and children who attend; they all comment they will be back in 2014.

The tournament director An-thony thanked all the club Dubbo members in assisting the tourna-ment over the two days special mention goes Dina Moore Zone 4 junior coordinator and the West Dubbo women’s Bowlers.

MollyMook iS proud to announce that after 10 years of service the old synthetic green has been upgraded with a new generation polyethylene Promaster Super Grass green that is World Bowls approved. The installation was completed in August.

Mollymook Beach’s new green was decided on after extensive consultation and investigation by the Club even inspecting many synthetic and carpet greens between Southern Sydney and the mid north coast to decide on the green best suited to the Club’s needs. The installation

The Zone 10 Juniors trav-elled to Port City Bowling Club recently to compete in the NSW Junior 7-a-side Championships. Finishing 1st in their section after wins against Zones 1 & 2 and a loss against Zone 16, they played Zone 3 in the Semi Final.

This saw a win to Zone 10 by 2 matches to 1 with the Fours win-ning on the final end which then qualified them to play off against Zone 14. Unfortunately the winning run came to an end with a defeat 2 wins to 1. The Zone should be proud of the boy’s efforts both on and off the green and I would like to acknowledge the support of the parents who came up to Port Macquarie for the weekend.

Merrylands Trio, Mason Lewis, Josh Cadman & Nic Cadman together with Putney Tennyson’s Sam Hatch-Caccamo have all been selected to represent City in the 2013 Junior (Under 18) City v Country series to be held at Cabramatta BC 23rd & 24th November.

Nic Cadman has also been selected in the Combined High Schools side to compete at Port City BC 10th to 12th September.

Trevor Imer from The Hills BC has been selected to represent NSW in the Australian Senior Sides Championship at Belmont BC in Victoria from 23rd to 25th October.

NSW won the series with an undefeated record in 2012 and they will be very keen to repeat this success this year.

This is disTurbing because every aspect of the sport of lawn bowls generates enjoyment, goodwill and cements a strong bond between members of the fraternity. This applies to people of all ages and gender.

Because those who have not played bowls cannot be expected to appreciate the en-joyment experienced through-out the bowling fraternity, the avenue is open for clubs to give potential members the op-

portunity to put down a bowl. An ‘Open Day’ could attract a large number of interested people. Careful planning and marketing, supported by bowl-ers with personality and skill, would generate an interest to which potential bowlers would respond.

The degree of the showcase is dependent on each individual club, with those displaying the best marketing skills obtaining the best results.

The presidenT of Mosman BC Barry Evans, reports that the youngest club champion Mos-man BC has ever had, 25 year old Sam Owen who won the 2010 Minor Singles Champi-onship and 2012 Consistency Singles Championship, has developed into a formidable op-ponent in all levels of the game.

Taking on his boss, Head Greenkeeeper Scott Denham, Sam gave a classic example of his skills to win this year’s Major Singles Championship, 31-20. He then paired with Bruce Atkins to win the Pairs’ Championship by defeating Snowy Kable and Scott Den-ham 23–20.

Zone 11 Michael Wilson

Leichhardt will be celebrat-ing their 90th year Birthday on the weekend on 28th / 29th September 2013 with the club inviting guests and the local resi-dents to join in on the weekend of festivities. Saturday 10am start for all invited guests and dignitaries including the Mayor of Leichhardt and Reps from Bowls NSW and Zone 11.

On the Sunday the club will be open to all, offering free activities to the local community such as free barefoot bowls and sausage sizzle, and for the kids, face painting, clowns and jump-ing castle.

A day of fun and enjoyment guaranteed so come to Leich-hardt and help celebrate this milestone event.

Pennant aPPreciation Day was held for the first time at our Revesby Workers Spence St Premises on July 27 & was a very successful event, run smoothly by the men’s committee.

The main celebration of the day was for our grade 3’s, who won their zone & at the time of writing are still to feature in the play-offs for the state titles, we

wish them good luck. Chairman of selectors Frank Schocher was very lavish in his praise for the 3’s and also didn’t forget the battlers in the lower grades, still an integral part of our club, but unfortunately, played without the success of our sharp shoot-ing SEVENS.

Our high-flying sevens were (in alphabetical order) Brian Barrett, Geoff Barron, Peter Day, Chris Fitton, Warren Gibson, Doug Hawkins, Colin Heaslip, Stephen Jessep, Lindsay Murray, David Raper, Nathan Spence,

Adam Whalan & of course our own Frank Schocher (couldn’t leave him out).

No matter what the results are in the State play-offs these players have done our club proud to get where they have got to, especially with the fierce compe-tition we get from some of those silvertail heavy hitters in zone 12.

Special mention went to LAU-RIE WILSON, TONY GILLESPIE & SHANE MATAKAIONGO, in those lower grades for their ef-forts and dedication to their club and teammates.

the finaLs of the Revesby workers major and minor singles championships were played at Spence St on July 28.

On what was just about a perfect day for bowls, Warren Gibson & David Raper fought out the Major & Tony Gillespie & Ken Whetton contested the Minor final. Both games were close early but the winners gradually overcame their opponents once they got to the lead and were never headed, Warren beating Dave 31-18 and Tony defeating Ken 31-13. Both games were of a high standard and good to watch and were much closer than the scores indicated.

The winners were fortunate enough to win those “critical mo-ments” when the games were in the balance and could have gone either way.

it is with great enthusiasm that we commence a new chapter for our Bowls Magazine. Zone 11 looks forward to con-tributing to the magazine and bringing the news from our 27 clubs that encompasses the most densely populated area of the State. With the warmer weather approaching, brings about the busy time and profitable time of the year for our Clubs. Barefoot

Bowls is very popular in the warmer months with some Clubs turning over up to 200 to 250 people per weekend. Just a few years ago barefoot bowls was seen as a threat, but now not only is it for most Clubs, their major income source but many of the barefoot bowlers have progressed to registered bowlers playing regular Championship games and pennant Games.

Barefoot bowls season is open

Zone 11 will be again conduct-ing the Annual Turn of the Year tournament over Christmas and New Year. It is the 56th year of this event. Many of us have time off over the Christmas and New Year’s period and do not go away.

There are also many people

visiting Sydney over this time. En-tries are open to all bowlers and all events singles, pairs and triples are open to men and women.

Prize money is in excess of $4,000 so check out the Zone 11 web site for entry forms www.zone11.lawnbowls.org.au

Thanks To the smart zone selectors for assembling a mag-nificent set of keen and compat-ible in-form bowlers, Zone 14 won the prestigious 2013 Pat Geary Memorial Shield played at Helekulani Bowling Club over the weekend of August 10-11.

This is only the second time Zone 14 has been successful in the fifteen year history of the competition and all 24 of the winning Zone 14 bowlers are sincerely congratulated for their brilliant efforts and performanc-

es both on and off the greens.Trailing early game one against

the strong Zone 15 squad, the Zone 14 teams had to dig deep to overcome a 20+ shot deficit and come home 127 to 119 victors.

Second winning contest was less stressful against Zone 6 with the final score 132 to 108 setting up an exciting finals clash against the confident Zone 2 brigade.

With the contest fairly even up to the half way stage, Zone 14 gradually edged ahead and defeated their Zone 2 opponents 122 shots to 103 to the acclama-tion of the many appreciative spectators.

The Zone 16 Triples Cham-pionships were decided at Albion Park Bowling Club (who were the sponsors) during July.

The early rounds were played in windy conditions and featured many upsets. The Semi Finalists were John Heidtmann, Adam Rodgers & Kevin Pepper (Kiama) who defeated Stuart Tyrrell, Brett Pieper & Chris Macauley (Figtree RSL) 25–18, and in the second semi-final Rod Busst, Dave Wakeling & Mal Lyons (Tow-

radgi) defeated Jason Cheadle, Col Cheadle & Robbie Warren (WPWC) 27–12.

Once again the upsets con-tinued with the heavily fancied teams from WPWC and Figtree RSL being defeated, the final was played on a glorious winters af-ternoon, with the Towardgi team of Rod Busst, Dave Wakeling and Mal Lyons proving too strong for the Kiama team of John Heidt-mann, Adam Rogers and Kevin Pepper winning 31–11.

The Kiama team although disappointed, did exceptionally well to make the final.

The Zone pairs were also completed during July with the 3 events played concurrently at Windang – Bulli and Fairy Meadow Bowling Clubs. In the Open Pairs Daniel Ellem & Shane Garvey (WPWC) ran out winners over Brett O’Leary & Warren Turner (Albion Park) 18–15.

The Presidents Reserve Pairs was won by Taylor Davis & Jamie Nabbe (Warilla) who defeated Peter Pearson & Stuart Greenshields (WPWC) 30–11.(Jamie Nabbe has since been disqualified). In the senior pairs Peter Tolias & Ron Herrick (Win-dang) defeated Peter Thomson & Rick Malley (Windang) 27–19. This is the first time club mates have played in a final.

aT The recenT Zone 13 AGM, Ray Tozer was unopposed as President for another term. Ian Tait-Kerr Vice President, Frank James Treasurer and Peter Sprotte State Councillor.

We would all like to acknowl-edge and thank Steve Wilson, for his last four years as Treasurer,

who did not seek re-election this year. Chairman of Selectors is Wayne Turley, along with Peter Hughes & Ray Tozer.

Match Committee Chairman is Cameron Curtis joined by Steve Garry and Geoff Frost. Curtis continues as Sports Administra-tor for Zone 13.

Zone 13 is very exciTed with the performance of Taren Point Bowling Club in recently claim-ing the state’s ‘blue-ribbon’ event – the no.1 State Pennant Flag.

This confirms Zone 13s place as the premier zone in NSW, having claimed the NSW State Inter-zone title in Tamworth last year along with five state titles to

the Sydney South Zone over the last two years, to the Roselands ‘Flames’ boys.

Taren Point was also runners up in the Grade 3 State Pennant, which was also a marvellous effort. It was certainly great to see the top 3 state pennant flags being won by the city ‘slickers’ for a change.

Around the Zones

At A time when many clubs across the State are struggling to keep their doors open, Ettalong Memorial Bowling Club on the Central Coast is going from strength to strength and is the envy of many.

Established in 1964, Ettalong is one of the few remaining four greens clubs and is renowned for its ability to host Zone and State finals at the one venue in a most professional manner.

But life hasn’t always been that way and in the early 2000’s the club wasn’t trading to its potential and its management and administration was put un-der the microscope. Under the chairmanship of Robert Hender-son since 2005 and CEO Boris Beleuski (2006 - 2013) the Club has constantly grown and in re-cent years it has recorded record

trading profits. It boasts the big-gest bowling membership on the Central Coast with 335 men and 120 lady bowlers and a strong social membership in excess of 7,000. But the records don’t stop there. Under the leadership of their popular Bowls Coordinator and State Senior representative player John Roberts the Club has won 19 Zone Pennant Flags and this year they were the first club in the Zone to ever win three pennant Grades (1’s, 3’s & 7’s) in the one year.

They are also the home club of the high profile World, National and State champion Aron Sher-riff who first played for Ettalong in their Premier league side in 2001 and 2002 as a junior and has been a permanent playing member since 2011.

Their major tournament of the year is the “Prestige Fours” which is into its 21st year is the most prestigious tourna-ments on the Coast and attracts international and high profile

players from across the State. The tournament usually com-mences with a sportsman’s dinner followed over the next 3 days with eight games of bowls. This year 40 teams took to the greens with the Terrigal “awe-some foursome” of Tony Swaine, Jeff Watson, Darren Morrison and Bruce Jewell taking out the honours.

Yet another outstanding and unique achievement that Et-talong can boast is that it has a player represented in three of the Bowls NSW State Sides, Aron Sherriff in the NSW Keno side, John Roberts in the Seniors and Harley McDonald in the under 25’s. It is unlikely that any other Club in Australia can boast of such a record and what is more, all three players were named “Player of the Series” in their last representative events. Now that is some bragging right.

Ettalong Memorial is a dedicat-ed Bowling Club in every sense and is committed to fostering

and developing the sport of lawn bowls at a local and Zone level. To this end, Bowls Central Coast recently announced that Ettalong had become a major sponsor of the Zone which in part will entitle them to host the Zone Pennant finals every two years. Zone President Max LeGuier said: “This generous sponsorship underpins the financial status of the Zone and will benefit all our bowlers on the Central Coast.”
