Parents will be able to pay private midwives to deliver their babies at Northern Hospital as part of a trial program beginning next year.

The state government announced last week that Northern Hospital would be one of two hospitals to take part in a pilot program that will allow private midwives to act as primary carers for women giving birth.

The trial, the result of a Labor Party pre-election commitment, will begin mid-next year at the Epping hospital with between four and six private midwives.

Monash Health is also taking part in the trial, which is expected to guide the roll-out of the initiative to hospitals across the state.

Northern Health chief executive officer Siva Sivarajah said this model would allow women and their families to have private midwives look after them before and after the births of their babies.

“Continuity of maternity care has been shown to improve outcomes and patient satisfaction,” he said.

“Under this collaborative model, women can give birth in hospital receiving care from their known midwife.

“If medical support is required, the midwife will transfer care to the medical team but remain involved.”

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation is supportive of the trial.

Federation Victorian branch secretary Lisa Fitzpatrick said “greater collaboration between midwives, health facilities and obstetricians is much needed”.

Australian College of Midwives vice-president Michelle Newton, said women were currently choosing to birth at home so as to have their private midwives with them.

“This has been very much consumer driven,” Dr Newton said. “Women have been very vocal about wanting this level of care.”

Currently women who use private midwives aren’t able to have them provide midwifery care during births in public hospitals.

Health Minister Jill Hennessy is encouraging women to participate in the trial.

There is no limit to the number of women allowed to take part in the program.

“As promised, we’re giving Victorian women more choice about their maternity care,” she said. “Many women want to have a familiar voice and trusted caregiver with them during labour.

“Pregnancy and birthing can be scary … this initiative means women will be able to have the same midwife from the start of their pregnancy through to birth and the weeks beyond.”

She said the private midwives taking part in the trial would be regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

Planning for the programs is under way.

A clutch of suburbs in Melbourne’s outer north has witnessed growth of up to 17 per cent in property prices over the past year.

Australian Property Monitors senior economist Dr Andrew Wilson has compiled a list of the top 10 performing suburbs in Melbourne’s eight housing markets, by geographical area.

In the city’s north-east, Wollert notched up 17.3 per cent growth in the 12 months to September 30, fetching a median house price of $440,000.

In the north, Fawkner had the second greatest growth in a year, with a median house price of $500,000, representing a price increase of 16.3 per cent.

Dr Wilson said the suburb’s growth could be partially attributed to the revival of Melbourne’s north.

“The gentrification of these suburbs is just spreading outwards, and Fawkner is a logical extension of that buzz,” he said.

“And anything that has a median [house price] in the $400,000s is a no-brainer.”

Dr Wilson said first-home buyers were heading to Wollert. He put outer northern corridor growth down to economic improvement and a stronger jobs market.

Two other suburbs to feature in the area’s top 10 for growth are Gladstone Park (14.4 per cent growth, median house price $461,000), and Westmeadows (13.4 per cent growth in the year to September, median house price $460,000).

Barry Plant Gladstone Park director Nick Pugliese said Gladstone Park had been popular with first-home buyers..

A plan to ask Hume residents to pay more than $1200 to install a car parking space in narrow streets has been labelled “unjust” and a knee-jerk reaction.

Broadmeadows Progress Association member Sonja Rutherford said Hume council had failed to inform the group of its draft parking in narrow streets policy, or of an online survey asking for community feedback.

The survey closed on Monday. The draft policy was created to address

parking shortfalls on some of Hume’s narrow estate streets where parking on either side of the street blocks through traffic.

It also aims to stop residents from parking on nature strips, which is illegal under the Victorian Road Safety Road Rules (2009).

The draft policy includes options to address parking shortfalls, including installing restricted bays on one side of a road or, where the demand for on-street parking exceeds the space that is available, installing indented parking on one side of the street.

Half of the cost of the parking bays would

be paid for by the council, and the other half by property owners. The cost of a single bay is about $2500.

“My mouth dropped … I couldn’t believe it,” Ms Rutherford said after having read the policy.

“They’re just side-stepping the issue and passing it onto landowners. It’s not the responsibility of the existing landowner, and people won’t be able to afford it.

“This is just a knee-jerk reaction to a very serious problem,” Ms Rutherford said.

The Broadmeadows resident said the issue in Hume was due to developers being given

planning approval to build roads that are too narrow for cars to park either side.

She said multi-unit developers are also building without adequate parking spaces.

Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell said the council had failed to inform his association of its draft policy.

He said there might be some residents prepared to pay for indented parking bays.

“But in my view, most people would object.”Hume council’s acting city infrastructure

director David Fricke said council is happy to talk about on-street parking options.

Parking plan short on support

A fireworks display and a host of children’s performers are on the cards for Hume council’s Christmas Carols by Candlelight event this Sunday at Craigieburn.

Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou is encouraging families to come along, with picnic rugs and candles.

Carols kick-off at 7pm, but for those who want to arrive before dusk, a Christmas market and animal farm will be open from 5pm.

Children’s group The Kazoos, Tubby the Robot, the Howling Huskies, Hume Dancers,

Greatest present is to be thereMayor Helen Patsikatheodorou with the Naturally Cool Big Band – Hadi, Neil and Mark. (Joe Mastroianni)

Marceau Camille, Aydan Calafiore, The Jingle Bells, Sunbury’s Naturally Cool Big Band and children from Willmott Park Primary School will perform on the night.

The Transport Accident Commission will bring its Be Present road show where people can walk into the giant present, gift-wrap themselves and then have their photos taken for Christmas cards.

TAC senior road safety manager Samantha Cockfield said the cards would remind family and friends that the best gift they can give this Christmas is to ‘be present’.

“We’re at that time of year when people love to enjoy time with their family and friends, and no one deserves to have an empty seat at the table because of a tragedy on the roads,” Ms Cockfield said.

The event is free of charge, and alcohol and drug-free.

Hume Carols by Candlelight at Craigieburn’s Highgate Reserve on Sunday, December 6, starts at 5pm. For more information, go online www.hume.vic.gov.au/events.

Firefighters have brought a blaze at an abandoned waste site in Somerton under control, six days after it was sparked by lightning.

A spokesman from Emergency Management Victoria said the main fire had been extinguished but there were still a number of hotspots in timber piles.

He said the fire was brought under control at 7am last Thursday.

The fire broke out during an electrical storm on November 20. Country Fire Authority and Metropolitan Fire Brigade crews were called to the scene at Patullos Lane, near the Hume Freeway, at 2.30am.

The fire shut Hume Highway between Somerton Road and Patullos Lane for several hours. The cost of removing waste from the land is estimated to be up to $4 million.

The site had been used by Eugene Skliar and Christopher Smith, of Ecotec Woodwaste, before Hume council ordered them to cease operations in January.

The business’s activities have been the subject of three Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal hearings since January and the business is before the Broadmeadows Magistrates Court.

On Monday last week, EPA chief executive Nial Finegan said a bench warrant had been issued for Mr Skliar’s arrest after he failed to attend court that day.

A specialist police unit has successfully prosecuted a northern suburbs business for its involvement in stripping stolen cars for parts.

Operation Neoplastic involved detectives from the Vehicle Crime Squad and focused on organised crime-related car thefts.

Officer in charge Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Ward said the unit honed in on ‘re-birthing’, where a stolen car is given a new identify before being on-sold.

“These are organised crimes, which involve substantial planning and organisation, with the purpose of obtaining profit, gain, power or influence,” Detective Senior Sergeant Ward said.

He said crime syndicates use thieves to steal cars for them, dissemble them into parts, and then ship them overseas in containers.

Operation Neoplastic wrapped up in June. It resulted in a 21-month jail term for Campbellfield business owner Zane Dib.

Dib was charged in relation to the exporting of 11 containers of car parts and accessories to the Middle East, with a value of about $400,000.

Senior Sergeant Ward said detectives visited Dib’s unregistered Campbellfield business last April, where they found two stolen cars. He said search warrants on Dib’s house uncovered on-board diagnostic readers, blank keys, vehicle log books, personal documents, stolen car parts and bull bars.

Detectives also found invoices from locksmiths, which revealed details of 106 car keys Dib had had cut over a two-year period.

Senior Sergeant Ward said it is important that vehicle owners make it as difficult as possible for thieves to steal cars.

“Vehicle owners should remove all valuables from the vehicle, and don’t leave keys where

Car parts sting ongoing

Vehicle Crime Squad members inspect suspicious vehicles at the Victoria Police impound at Preston. (Victoria Police)

they can be easily found in the home,” he said.Vehicle Crime Squad investigations into

re-birthing are on-going. A Campbellfield mechanics business

owner was recently charged with 51 offences,

including handling stolen goods and dealing with property suspected of being proceeds of crime. A committal hearing has been scheduled for the Melbourne Magistrates court on January 22 next year.

Bike riders can now cycle between Mill Park and Alphington on a sealed path, after upgrades to a popular bike track were completed.

Whittlesea council has finished concreting a one-kilometre stretch of the Darebin Creek Trail between Sycamore Reserve and McKimmies Road at Mill Park.

After being closed to the public for about a month, the path was reopened last week.

The council spent $280,000 replacing the existing sand track with a concrete one.

The works are in line with the council’s long-term plan for the busy trail, an unconnected path that runs from Epping to the ring road at Bundoora, then south past La Trobe University to join the Yarra River at Alphington.

Whittlesea eventually wants to transform the trail into a 2.5-metre wide, shared concrete pathway for pedestrians and cyclists, running from the municipal boundary with Darebin

council to Findon Road, and including safe crossing points across major roads en route.

Whittlesea Bicycle Users Group (BUG) member Ron Harvey said the paved track makes life much easier for cyclists.

“Eventually it will be paved all the way to Harvest Home Road,” he said.

Mr Harvey leads a group of about 20 riders each week along the “pretty” track to the city and back. He said Whittlesea BUG has 52 financial members and is growing steadily.

Whittlesea council has found more than 28,000 residents cycle at least once a week.

The council is seeking feedback on its draft Whittlesea Bicycle Plan. Residents can tell the council what roads they feel are unsafe, what recreation trails need upgrading and where bike parking bays are needed – at communityvoice.whittlesea.vic.gov.au by December 13.

Sisters saved from house fireBy Alexandra Laskie

A woman remains in a critical condition after an intense fire tore through her Thomastown house last Wednesday.

Emergency services were called to her Kingsley Court address at 3.44pm.

It took 15 firefighters with at least four trucks about half-an-hour to control the blaze, which damaged seven of the eight rooms in the house as well as the roof cavity.

A Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) spokeswoman said two sisters lived in the

house. Firefighters found one of the women, aged in her 60s, unconscious and not breathing in the bathroom of the house.

“Firefighters dragged her to safety and …commenced emergency medical response,” the MFB spokeswoman said.

The woman was later treated by paramedics from Ambulance Victoria before being airlifted to the Alfred Hospital for treatment to burns to her face and throat.

A spokeswoman from The Alfred said the woman remained in a critical condition late last week.

Her sister, believed to be in her 50s, suffered smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene.

Their two German Shepherds, two cats and several pet birds died in the fire.

Fire investigators and an arson chemist were at the scene on Wednesday. An electrical fault has been determined as the cause of the fire.

Investigators have yet to determine the cost of damages

The lead-up to Christmas is an expensive time of year for many families, says Katriece Bolden, from welfare agency Whittlesea Community Connections (WCC).

She said agencies are often stretched and cannot meet demand for emergency relief packages. So, each year, WCC calls for donations of non-perishable food and toiletries to cater for the increased demand over the festive period.

“This is often a difficult time for families, and we would love to assist as many people as possible,” Ms Bolden said.

WCC is asking the community to support

its Christmas Drive by donating long life milk, rice, cereal, tuna, canned tomatoes, chick peas, canned fruit, tampons, nappies, baby wipes and Christmas foods before December 14.

There are three drop-off locations – at Scullin MP Andrew Giles’ office at The Stables shopping centre, WCC’s office at Shop 111, Pacific Epping, or at Aparet Café in Hazel Glen Drive, Doreen.

A new $3.8 million early learning centre has opened at Doreen. The Bassetts Road Early Learning Centre will be operated by Melbourne City Mission (MCM) and is already accepting enrolments for next year. MCM’s Georda Aldersea said the centre would cater for 120 children, from birth to school age, from Doreen, Whittlesea, Mernda, Nutfield, Yarrambat, Yan Yean, Wollert and South Morang. “With about 60 babies born each week in Whittlesea, these areas have a growing demand for high-quality child development services,” Ms Aldersea said. In a recent submission to the state government’s education consultant, MCM identified that, in some parts of the Whittlesea growth corridor, up to 35 per cent of children are entering school “developmentally vulnerable”. MCM’s chief executive Ric Holland said the importance of a child’s early years cannot be overstated. The number of babies born to 2019 in Doreen is expected to triple, Whittlesea council has found. SPORTCannons midfielder gets it right in the rookie draftAfter missing out on selection in last week’s AFL national draft, Nick O’Kearney had every reason to be disappointed.

The Calder Cannons and Keilor midfielder has long been considered a prospective AFL player and was surprisingly overlooked on Tuesday night.

“It was a little disappointing as I’d put everything into it,” O’Kearney said.

“But I didn’t have any regrets and I had to move on and look to the next chapter, which was the rookie draft.”

And he didn’t have to wait long in the rookie draft to see his name, as St Kilda took him with pick five.

“I’m relieved; it’s been a hectic few days,” he

said. “It was good to see my name so early in the draft and to not be sitting on edge like the other night.

“To get calls from the coach and others at St Kilda is really good.”

O’Kearney knew the Saints were interested in him, as they and Adelaide contacted him in between the two drafts.

“On Wednesday morning, after the clubs got back from Adelaide, I got a phone call from St Kilda asking if I was home and that they would be straight around to my place to talk,” O’Kearney said.

“I spoke with them two or three times on the phone and Adelaide called me a couple of times saying they were interested but didn’t think I

would be around when they had a pick. There was a lot of support from Adelaide, telling me to keep my head up.”

O’Kearney didn’t have long to get his head around being drafted as he headed to a Saints training camp in Queensland on Sunday.

He was one of three Cannons players selected in the rookie draft after the team failed to have anyone picked in the national draft.

Callum Moore was selected by Richmond at pick 12, while Tom Wallis joined Essendon under the father-son rule.

Cannons talent manager Ian Kyte said the three boys deserved to be selected.

“It’s probably where we thought we’d be this year, with three or four players selected,” he

said. “Callum has worked hard and still has a lot of improvement in him. I think he’ll thrive in a full-time environment.

“It was relief for Tom to get to Essendon . . . we were pretty sure he’d go there.”

One Cannons player who missed out was Hisham Kerbatieh.

“It’s disappointing for him,” Kyte said. “Now he needs to play in the VFL and improve in the areas that clubs see as his weaknesses.”

Former Cannons player Andrew Gallucci was also picked up in the rookie draft.

The Williamstown midfielder was selected by Carlton.

The Northern Knights had their most successful AFL draft since 2007, with five Knights players joining the premier ranks last week.

Jade Gresham, Brayden Fiorini, Brayden Sier and Tyrone Leonardis were selected in last Tuesday’s AFL National Draft, while Darcy MacPherson was among Friday’s rookie draft.

Knights’ talent manager Peter Kennedy said the club was thrilled to have five players drafted.

He said it was the most successful draft for the club since 2007, when Matthew Kreuzer and Trent Cotchin were picks one and two.

Gresham was selected by St Kilda, MacPherson and Fiorini are going to the Gold Coast Suns, Leonardis to Sydney and Sier was picked up by Collingwood.

“A lot of people judge you on ladder position, but this shows it’s more than about that,” Kennedy said. “This competition is about getting players drafted or rookie-listed.

“I think we have a really good development

Knights shine in draftprogram, and the coaches work hard developing the top-end players.”

Kennedy wasn’t surprised by the players selected for the AFL. All five had been on the radar of clubs and, as predicted, Gresham and Fiorini went in the first 30 picks.

Kennedy said Sier, who’d only played two games for the Knights, was taken earlier than they’d expected.

“We thought at best he would be rookie-listed,” Kennedy said. “He trained with Essendon and the Western Bulldogs in the last couple of weeks, and Melbourne had showed interest.

“He had met with Collingwood. He has trimmed down in the last 12 months and worked really hard. He wasn’t regularly in his school team last year, but he won their best and fairest this year and dominated.”

For MacPherson, getting picked up in the rookie draft makes up for the disappointment of not being selected by the Western Bulldogs under the father-son rule.

Stephen MacPherson played 188 games for the Bulldogs.

“I’m in the best mood ever,” MacPherson said Friday morning. “It’s unreal … I’m still pinching myself … I can’t wait to get up there and start training.”

Kennedy said the club was disappointed two other players, Matthew Perry and James El Moussalli, weren’t picked up.

“At this stage, we are hoping that they will go to the Northern Blues and play there.

“Matt was unlucky with injury. He has outstanding qualities and his GPS figures are at AFL level,” Kennedy said.

“James also had an injury-prone year.”He said the story of former Northern Knights’

player Adam Marcon was something the two players should study closely.

Marcon, who was playing VFL with Williamstown was rookie-listed by Richmond.

“James and Matthew have to play good consistent footy and, hopefully, someone will give them a chance.”

Five Northern Knights and three Calder Cannons are among the newest AFL players. Here’s a quick look at where they went.

Whittlesea City’s young guns on track for state titleWhittlesea City Little Athletics Centre will have a record 32 relay teams in the Little Athletics Victoria’s relay championships later this month.

City had 32 teams qualify for the championships following their efforts at the Northern Metropolitan Region Relay Championships held last weekend.

At the region championships, City won 11 gold, 14 silver and eight bronze medals.

City team manager Craig Chapman said the centre’s results at the region championships had exceeded all expectations.

“It was definitely an amazing result for the club,” Chapman said.

“All 77 athletes who competed have been training hard for the last five to six weeks. We thought we would go quite well but were pleasantly surprised how well.

“For some of the kids it was the first time they were competing in relays.”

City finish third in its region behind Diamond Valley and Keilor.

“I think this is one of the toughest regions in the state,” Chapman said.

Chapman said the centre had aimed to get as many children as possible competing in the region events.

“We want to give as many children as possible the chance to enjoy competing,” he said. “I think we have got that right and it’s something that the club will build on in the future.”

As part of its inclusive approach, City had many teams competing in mixed age and mixed gender relays.

The centre had massive success in these events, winning all but one of its gold medals in mixed events.

The centre’s under-14 and under-15 mixed relay teams won their 4 x 100-metre and 4 x 200-metre relays.

“They are usually the harder events to fair well in,” Chapman said. “You need to have four crack runners and that’s hard to find.”

Chapman is hoping City can continue its winning ways at the state championships on December 12.

Gladstone Park is starting to reap the rewards of promoting home grown talent in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association.

Runners-up last year in the George Luscombe Shield, the Burras have had a slow start to the season after losing half its grand final team.

On Saturday, they won their second match of the season against Campbellfield, and were in complete control of the game after sending Campbellfield in to bat.

The Burras bowled its opposition out for 96, with skipper Andrew Shanahan taking four wickets.

The chase was a quick one, with the Burras reaching their target in just 22 overs. Ashan DeSilva top-scored 21 in his side’s total of 5-97.

Burras’ president Glenn Smerdon said it was good to get some results for the hard work that’s being put in.

Andrew Shanahan is having an impact in his first year as coach. (Kristian Scott)

Young Burras take flightHe said while there was some short term pain

after losing half the top team, it would benefit the club in the long term.

“We are emphasising our junior program and play home-grown talent,” he said.

“Everyone but one player [Shanahan] has played juniors at the club.

“It’s a rebuilding phase and we’re confident we are on the right track.”

Smerdon said some of younger talent was starting to shine through.

“We had three under-18 players play on the weekend,” he said. “Matthew Harrington took seven wickets in a match earlier in the season, Jake Lloyd got his first wicket on the weekend and Ashan is our best batsman in the side.

“Michael Gatt didn’t play yesterday, but he has returned from Greenvale to play with us again. They’re not just good players, but they are also good clubmen.”

Smerdon said the aim this season was to

continue to build on the work done by past committees. He said the club was thrilled with the performance of new coach Shanahan, saying he was performing “above all expectations”.

“We expect to win between six and eight games for the season,” Smerdon said. “We would like to finish in the top four.

“We are starting to see the results.”In other results, the Northern Lions remain

undefeated in the Vic Kyte Shield. The Lions chased down Kealba-Green Gully’s score of 7-125 with two wickets in hand.

Donnybrook defeated Gladstone Park’s second side with Donnybrook skipper Amit Kumar Sharma making 94 in his side’s total of 228.

Gladstone Park was bowled out for 195.Clarkefield Brumbies easily accounted for

Craigieburn. Craigieburn could only make 9-91, with Brumbies reaching the total with the loss of one wicket.
