Preparing todays students for tomorrowIt might seem unrealistic now, but in the not-too-distant future when your child finishes studying and starts job hunting, positions like this will be a reality. So Victorian schools are working to prepare students for whatever the future might hold.

New Victoria Police data shows an alarming rise in family violence in the City of Whittlesea.

The figures show an average of 45 incidents of family violence were reported in the municipality every week in the 2013-14 financial year an increase of almost 36 per cent over the two previous years.

The statistics show Whittleseas rates of family violence have increased 268 per cent since 2000, compared to 172 per cent state- wide.

Victoria Polices Whittlesea family violence unit is working to reverse the trend. Led by Sergeant Chris Lalor, the Mill Park-based unit works in partnership with the council and community groups to promote awareness and give women the confidence to make reports.

The former detective said the family violence unit saw between four and 12 women reporting family violence every day, but she said much more was not reported.

Whittleseas Acting Inspector Stuart Morris said living in the outer suburbs was a huge factor in the prevalence of family violence.

We have an eclectic mix of backgrounds, with different migrant groups moving into the area because of the affordable housing. That in itself brings problems, he said. There is limited public infrastructure, people are looking for jobs and these pressures build up.

Despite the alarming statistics, Whittlesea mayor Mary Lalios said the state government had overlooked the city for crucial funding.

In the lead-up to the state election, the Whittlesea Community Futures Partnership (WCFP), made up of 45 multi-disciplinary agencies including the council, is seeking government funding for four projects.

Were calling for $1.1 million in state and federal government support to prevent and respond locally to violence against women and children, Cr Lalios said.

The council wants a culturally and linguistically diverse family violence project, primary prevention in schools, additional local specialist family violence services, and increased access to mens behaviour change programs.

This critical funding can make a meaningful difference, Cr Lalios said.

A parking assessment at Mernda and St Josephs primary schools suggests parents are being lazy by wanting parking right outside the school gates. The assessment was the result of a petition from more than 200 parents tabled at a Whittlesea council meeting in July. The parents complained about the lack of parking in peak times, school staff parking on the street, a lack of safe walkways, and the need for the council to build a kiss-and-drop zone, extra parking on council-owned land and a drop-off zone for Mernda Village Drive.

A council traffic engineering report tabled last week found that traffic volumes were acceptable for the local streets and collector roads.

It also found that traffic conditions were generally acceptable but for two notable exceptions.

It found that about 55 per cent of drivers using Mernda Village Drive exceeded the 40km/h school speed limit and 85 per cent of drivers went above the 40km/h limit in Foundry Street.

Whittlesea council has since asked Victoria Police to target speeding drivers in these streets.

According to the report, all footpaths are only five years old and in good condition. Theres a bicycle lane in Mernda Village Drive and storage for 100 bikes at Mernda Primary School and 20 bikes at St Josephs.

The council also plans to install a signalised crossing in Bridge Inn Road, just west of Mernda Village Drive.

The report did note that there was insufficient staff parking at Mernda Primary School, with just 34 spaces for 65 staff.

The council report said that, on average, the number of parking spaces unoccupied in the before and after school periods are 137 spaces and 78 spaces for Everton Drive and Bent Street, respectively . . . the location of vacant spaces may not be to parents preference right outside the gate.

Parking is within a one-minute walk.Whittlesea councillor Sam Alessi labelled

the finding a great tragedy and said parents were being lazy.

I know these schools participate in programs around walking to schools, but its a great tragedy that parents not only want to drive their children to school but have to park near the front gate, he said. Firstly, it creates congestion, but its also very dangerous.

The council has said it will trial a drop-off zone in Erskine Road, provide a disabled car park in Everton Drive and encourage parents to park in surrounding streets or walk or cycle with their children to school.

    Report hits outat lazy parents

Vacant spaces may not be to parents preference outside the gate - Report Tagging has given graffiti a bad name. What should be an urban artform is now more

commonly called vandalism. And its forcing councils around Victoria to

spend precious ratepayers funds on heavy-duty cleaning products and clean-up crews.

Whittlesea has two dedicated crews that remove graffiti from power boxes, fences, signs and playground equipment, while Hume has spent almost $200,000 in the past year on contract cleaners and graffiti clean-up kits.

Hume has two special trailers for removing unwanted graffiti as soon as its reported.

In an attempt to deal with the problem more creatively, Whittlesea council has used graffiti-style art to make over local skateboard bowls, which usually have to be repainted every

week to cover tags and other scrawlings. The new approach has been given the thumbs-up by youngsters using the Meadowglen skate park.

Meanwhile, Hume residents have just filed their feedback to their councils new counter-graffiti strategy, which is focusing on education and better reporting. It also seeks to involve young people in arts programs and a community mural, while schools will run graffiti impact and prevention sessions.

Hume residents can report graffiti by phoning 1300 486 325, while Whittlesea residents can call 9404 5500 or report incidents online at www.whitt lesea.vic.gov.au/your-council/contact-us/report-an-issue-or-offence.
