National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)• Center for Postsecondary Research in the
Indiana University School of Education
• Based on empirically confirmed “good practices” in undergraduate education
• On-line survey instrument with email recruitment
• All first-time freshmen and seniors are invited
• Cal Poly Pomona participated initially in 2005, repeated in 2008 and 2011

• In 2011, students report working for pay (on and off campus) slightly less or about the same as at other institutions
• On campus, 7% of first-year and 14% of seniors report working 1 to 20 hours / week; at all NSSE institutions, those figures are 16% of first-year and 24% of seniors
• Off campus, 2% of freshmen and 12% of seniors report working 30+ hours / week; all NSSE 6% and 17%
