EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE — STRATEGIC PLANNINGOn May 20 – 22, the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Board of Directors, staff, and volunteer leaders met in order to devise a new strategic plan at the NSCA World Headquarters. This plan will shape the foundation of how the NSCA focuses its efforts and resources to best serve you, the Members and certificants. The group identified four key strategy areas to help guide the NSCA going forward. These four areas are: community, professional development, communication, and advocacy.

Community is an important aspect of the NSCA because, at its core, the NSCA is simply a group of interconnected individuals who promote the strength and conditioning profession. As part of this strategic plan, the NSCA will seek to continue growing the community and increase internal communication through interconnectivity. This also includes disbursing more strength and conditioning resources amongst the NSCA community, as well as externally.

Another key strategy area is professional development, which includes further legitimizing the strength and conditioning profession through advanced education and training. One way that this will be accomplished is by enhancing the Education Recognition Program (ERP). Additionally, the NSCA will expand educational resources and opportunities, including collaborative position statements. The NSCA will also promote an increase in resources dedicated to evidence-based research on topics pertinent to the strength and conditioning field.

Communication, the third key strategy area, entails engaging and informing the populace about the strength and conditioning field. This involves growing the organization’s social media presence to increase engagement amongst strength and conditioning professionals. This also includes improving and expanding upon the current channels of dissemination of research and useful information to help practitioners bridge the gap between research and application.

Finally, the fourth key strategy area is advocacy. The objective here is to engage in activities designed to further advance the strength and conditioning profession. This includes expanding and finding new relationships for collaboration with other like-minded professional organizations.

This strategic planning is the first step in what we, as an organization, see as the best method for growing both domestically and internationally. Not only has the NSCA put the process in place to expand its horizons, but also to increase the value of its services to all current and future NSCA Members and certificants.

Sincerely,

Michael Massik

2016 TSAC ANNUAL TRAINING WRAP-UPThe National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) held the 2016 Tactical Strength and Conditioning (TSAC) Annual Training in San Diego, CA on April 25 – 28 at the San Diego Marriott Mission Valley.

As the most comprehensive event available for tactical facilitators who work with military, law enforcement, and fire and rescue personnel, TSAC Annual Training lived up to its billing. It provided a perfect setting for networking opportunities, exhibitor exposure, and valuable hands-on and lecture sessions to all attendees. It was attended by a record-setting 478 attendees, eclipsing the previous record of 415 from 2012.

To get everyone warmed up on Monday, April 25, Sorinex provided a hands-on pre-conference session that was attended by more than 130 people. Both Tuesday and Wednesday got started with “wake-up workouts” sponsored by TRX. Additionally, the Exhibit Hall was full of the latest cutting-edge equipment available in the field of strength and conditioning.

One of the more memorable highlights came during the opening ceremony on Tuesday morning when Retired Lieutenant Colonel Dave Grossman gave his keynote presentation. Everyone left feeling very motivated and

inspired from his strong presentation, which set a perfect tone that resonated throughout the entire event.

Tuesday and Wednesday consisted of a full slate of informative sessions, while Thursday was a jam-packed half-day of sessions. These sessions covered many different topics that are pertinent to the full gamut of tactical populations. Even organizations such as the United States Special Operation Command (USSOCOM) and the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA) were represented.

Some notable highlights from these sessions include Mark Stephenson’s enlightening session on the brain’s role on exercise and recovery. Bryan Mann presented on useful recovery methods for tactical athletes, including methods to allow for proper recovery in tactical athletes who have reached the point of overtraining. Jay Dawes discussed various exercises that utilize active resistance training as well as how to incorporate them into

a tactical athlete’s training regimen. Additionally, Jeff Nichols presented a well-received session on the importance of effectively managing stress to the central nervous system.

Some other notable presenters included Rob Orr, Matt Wenning, Katie Sell, William Kraemer, Loren Landow, Matt Devine, Mark Abel, Brian Schilling, Joel Raether, Mark Taysom, Stew Smith, Bradley Nindl, Bryan Fass, and Andy Zalaiskalns, to name a few.

Congratulations to Mark Abel for taking home the prestigious TSAC Practitioner of Year Award. Likewise, Mick Stierli was honored for his hard work by receiving the TSAC Facilitator of the Year Award.

All in all, the 2016 TSAC Annual Training was a huge success. The NSCA is already gearing up for 2017. To learn more about all of the conferences and clinics that the NSCA has to offer, please visit www.nsca.com/events.

VISION STATEMENT OUTLINING THE CRITICAL AND/OR SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES FACING THE NSCA, SPECIFIC GOALS FOR THE NSCA, AND AN INDICATION OF HOW SUCH GOALS MAY BE ACHIEVEDOver the last decade I have had the honor and privilege of serving the NSCA in various capacities as a volunteer, as well as an employee. I believe my experience and knowledge of the organization, education, leadership skills, and passion for strength and conditioning have provided me with the necessary expertise required to serve as an NSCA BOD member. Therefore, it is my desire to continue serving the NSCA membership and certified professionals as a member of the NSCA BOD in order to help advance the strength and conditioning profession, as well as the mission of the NSCA.

Over the years the diversity of the NSCA membership has continued to grow. We have seen the NSCA change and expand from strength and conditioning coaches to an organization inclusive of a variety of strength and conditioning with diverse needs. This information must range from

the entry level professionals to more senior members. Thus, in order to best support the membership it is essential that educational opportunities that meet the needs of these professionals are made available. This provides a unique challenge as within the association our members have a broad range of education levels and professional experiences which must be considered. In order to address this it is imperative that educational resources and opportunities created, evaluated and made available for sport and exercise scientists, strength and conditioning coaches, personal trainers, tactical facilitators and rehabilitation specialists.

The mission of the NSCA is to bridge the gap between research and practical application. While the importance of research cannot be overstated, many coaches and trainers do not necessarily have time to wait for years of longitudinal research to be collected in order to make decisions based on the constraints of their environment. For this reason, as an international authority on strength training and conditioning the NSCA has a responsibility assist practitioners in making the best evidenced based decisions. Therefore, when the research is not available the NSCA should help provide guidance based on foundational scientific principles to establish professional/industry best practices. It is my belief that individuals should consult, and seek out, the advice of outstanding practitioners, academics and researchers that make up our association before seeking this information from less credible sources. The vast knowledge of our members is one of our association’s biggest benefits and should be promoted to further establish the NSCA as the preferred source for information related to strength and conditioning for our profession as well as the public at large.

Finally, in recent years many researchers have experienced increased pressure for their academic institutions to obtain grant funding. While numerous funding opportunities are available t in the areas of health and wellness there are significantly fewer opportunities to secure funding for research to improve athletic/performance. Thus, continuing to promote the growth of eh NSCA foundation provides an excellent opportunity for sport/exercise scientist to explore research based on their passions, interests and needs of the profession rather than seeking funding to simply meet their job requirements. This, in conjunction with providing the appropriate delivery mechanisms and a platform for our top practitioners to share their practical experience, will allow the NSCA to continue making a significant impact on the profession of strength and conditioning for years to come.

VISION STATEMENT OUTLINING THE CRITICAL AND/OR SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES FACING THE NSCA, SPECIFIC GOALS FOR THE NSCA, AND AN INDICATION OF HOW SUCH GOALS MAY BE ACHIEVEDI envision the NSCA as becoming one of the premier organizations in the strength and conditioning industry along with the fitness industry. With other organizations and agencies now starting to advertise their certifications

and brand on ESPN and main stream television, we the NSCA, must also take that assertive approach to let the sports and fitness industry know that we are the top organization that bridge the gap between science and application. I will encourage the NSCA to start advertising on ESPN and other networks, so we become branded as the top organization for certification and education in the strength and conditioning industry. In recent years several organizations have become very competitive in capturing the top of the mind awareness of strength and conditioning because perhaps they have been more aggressive in marketing. I envision the NSCA increasing Exam prep workshops across the country, and also increasing its awareness of all the great certifications that we offer. I also envision the NSCA adding a Strength and Conditioning Coaches Hall of Fame, recognizing many of the coaches who are retired who contributed significantly to the field.

Second, I would like to see the NSCA to form liaison and partnerships with other organizations, such as the Boxing associations, bodybuilding and fitness organizations, Mixed Martial Arts, Running organizations, track and field, sport psychology, etc. We have many benefits that we can offer to all sport agencies, and we can assist them as well as they assist the NSCA in members and education development. I envision the NSCA setting up exhibits at these other associations, and through this attract more new and diverse memberships.

Third, I would like to see the NSCA to fully engage the concept of diversity. Now that we have a diversity committee in place, let’s explore ways to make our membership more diverse and also ways to assure a more diverse leadership staff

including the board of directors. I envision having a Women at large position the board and possibly allowing the President to appoint a member on the board to oversee diversity initiatives.

VISION STATEMENT OUTLINING THE CRITICAL AND/OR SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES FACING THE NSCA, SPECIFIC GOALS FOR THE NSCA, AND AN INDICATION OF HOW SUCH GOALS MAY BE ACHIEVEDAs strength and conditioning professionals we work in one of the finest industries in the world. Daily, we are afforded the opportunity to positively impact upon the lives of many individuals, giving them lifelong experiences and developing the benefits of fitness directly impacts upon quality of life. This also brings with it a responsibility to ensure that everyone we work with receives the best possible

experience, utilising the most efficacious methods of delivering their individual needs. The NSCA plays a pivotal role for every one of us ensuring that we are provided with the information, the networking and the practices with which to maximise our performance.

Today, the strength and conditioning profession has many opportunities but also many challenges. Never before have the unique skills of the strength and conditioning professional been so sorely needed. Levels of physical fitness are at an all-time low and this is manifesting itself in an epidemic of exercise deficiency based diseases. Additionally, the pressures on athletes of all ages to perform at an ever increasing frequency are at an all-time high. Clearly, the skills of the strength and conditioning professional are critical to addressing these issues yet in this age of ubiquitous information, the unique skills of the strength and conditioning professional are not fully understood and acknowledged in the wider community. It is critical that appropriate decision-makers are fully aware of the potential impact of the strength and conditioning professional in these areas. The NSCA must play a key role in this development, lobbying appropriate political and administrative organisations and ensuring that the strength and conditioning professionals’ role is fully understood and appropriately acknowledged in any policy or strategy.

Today we are in a position where strength and conditioning, and its allied professions are an acknowledged employment route for many individuals, a situation that seemed a dream in the initial years of the organisation. For this we are indebted to the NSCA and to the tireless work on countless pioneers that blazed a trail before us. However, we are far from the end of the journey and it is important

that the NSCA continues to drive this development. We still have a long way to go before the strength and conditioning professional is accorded the same status as the sports medicine professional and remunerated appropriately for the skills they bring to the table. In the latter, extensive training and professional accreditation is a prerequisite for employment yet, this is not always the case with the strength and conditioning professional. As an organisation we must continue this quest to further professionalise the industry and ensure that every strength and conditioning appointment must have appropriate training, skills and accreditation. Importantly, the credentials reflect the needs of the industry and evolve to consistently reflect best practice. Subsequently, the NSCA needs to liaise with employers and other key groups to ensure that the credentials accurately reflect the needs of the industry.

The NSCA is rightly proud of its role as the worldwide authority in strength and conditioning. However, in my travels around the world I see a flourishing of awareness of strength and conditioning and a huge growth in the number of people wishing to enter this great profession. This again provides a massive opportunity for the NSCA to further its international position and influence. The NSCA must play a key role in facilitating this growth and ensuring professionals around the world are given the finest opportunities for professional development in this field. It needs to develop key alliances and partnerships with organisations that share the same goals. Critically, it also requires that the NSCA develops a listening philosophy, observing and integrating best practice from around the world into its own provision.

It is always important to remember that the NSCA is a member organisation and that its ultimate goal is to best serve its members, members that are drawn from very diverse groups, and increasingly from an ever increasing range of countries. This puts a great onus on the NSCA to have the capacity to listen to the needs of its members and also the agility and flexibility to be able to rapidly adapt and reflect these needs.

It is my hope that by being part of the board of Directors I can continue the great work carried out by those who have gone before and ensure that the NSCA continues as the worldwide leader in strength and conditioning. I believe that I bring a unique perspective to the organisation as my role as both a coach and educator enables me to bridge the gap between research and practice on a daily basis and also enables me to have an understanding of each perspective. Similarly, my experiences as a professional athlete afford me a deep understanding of the impact of strength and conditioning from an end user perspective. Importantly, my international perspective allows me to integrate the best practices from around the globe into the NSCA. The NSCA has been pivotal in my own professional development and I have been fortunate to become actively involved with the organisation as an award winning coach, author, reviewer, associate editor, conference speaker, committee member, and as an international representative. My hope is that my election onto the board of directors can ensure that the organisation continues to lead the industry and provides the necessary provision to enable thousands more individuals to enter this wonderful profession.

After much consideration, I decided that my real motivation for running was relatively simple, to give back to the NSCA a small fraction of what its constituency has provided me over the past 20 years.

Like most large professional organizations, there are numerous complex issues that face the future of the NSCA. While I have been fortunate to serve the NSCA in many leadership capacities, I believe I come to the position with an open mind, willing to consider various ideas and solutions that offer the potential to better serve the goals of the NSCA membership. I support innovative and diverse thinking and believe that service is still the foundation of good leadership. Subsequently, it will always be

my goal to place the best interests of the NSCA membership at the forefront of all leadership decisions.

Like any successful organization, the NSCA has been blessed with a rich history of strong leadership. Respectful of that history, my goal will be to use my experience as a professional coach, professor, sport scientist, and NSCA volunteer to help continue that tradition. It is an honor to be considered as a candidate for a position on the NSCA Board of Directors and I believe I possess the experience, leadership skills, and vision to serve the membership well.

NOMINATION COMMITTEE QUESTIONSWhy do you want to serve on the Nomination Committee? It is my belief that an organization’s leadership is the most important attribute that contributes to its success. Serving on the nomination committee will provide me with the opportunity to identify, screen, and recommend the future leaders of our organization —which is a role that I would take very seriously. I have served the NSCS in several other roles, and at this time I believe that I can best serve the NSCA as a member of this important committee. I thank you for the opportunity to be considered for serving the NSCA in this capacity.

What is your understanding of the organizational structure of the NSCA?The NSCA is led by an Executive Team and governed by a Board of Directors. The Executive Team is comprised of 8 different individuals with backgrounds and expertise within strength and conditioning and in other professional communities. The Executive Team is responsible for leading the NSCA in key organizational areas such as administration services, membership and business development, technology, science, marketing, conferences/events, sponsorships, and publications. The Board of Directors is also comprised of 8 members of the NSCA and one elected public member. The Board of Directors govern the NSCA and are tasked with establishing the policies and procedures by which the NSCA operates.

One of the roles of the Nomination Committee is to find qualified candidates for Board of Director positions. How would you go about seeking or identifying candidates who would be representative of the diverse population of our membership, and consistent with the NSCA mission statement? In identifying potential candidates for the Board of Director positions, I would look for individuals that possess the following characteristics:

a. Those that have a history of serving the NSCA in different capacities

b. Those that have leadership qualities

c. Those that have a genuine desire to advance the mission of the NSCA above personal ambitions.

Once potential candidates have been identified, it would be essential to communicate the time commitment that is required of NSCA Board Members to the potential candidate. If the potential

candidate possesses each of the characteristics listed above, is aware of the time commitment, and is willing to serve the NSCA as a Board Member, I would feel comfortable recommending their name to be placed on the ballot for the membership to make a decision on their election to the board.

NOMINATION COMMITTEE QUESTIONSWhy do you want to serve on the Nomination Committee?I’ve been a member of the NSCA since 2007 and during that time I have seen the NSCA grow in leadership from within its membership and volunteers. Many of these individuals have become mentors of mine and I would love to help guide the future of the NSCA as they have. The NSCA is a huge part of my career and the

leadership that has assisted me in growing as a professional have all come from this great organization. It would be an honor to help select the individuals who serve as the leaders of our organization as the NSCA continues to grow as a industry leader.

What is your understanding of the organizational structure of the NSCA?From what I understand the Board of Directors works along side the directors and managers at NSCA headquarters on implementing the five year plan and pointing our organization in the right direction. The nomination committee assists in selecting the individuals who run for the board of director positions.

One of the roles of the Nomination Committee is to find qualified candidates for Board of Director positions. How would you go about seeking or identifying candidates who would be representative of the diverse population of our membership, and consistent with the NSCA mission statement?Other then the basic requirements needed to run for the BOD (degree, current certification, etc.) I think the grassroots involvement within the NSCA is a great pre-requisite. Working within membership volunteer opportunities (advisory board, state director, regional coordinator, committee member, SIG members, etc.) is something I would greatly value as connecting and networking with membership is one of the most important things a candidate could offer. Contributing to the educational opportunities/development of the NSCA is also a great value I would look for. Contributing articles to the SCJ or other NSCA publications, recording webinars, authoring text books or chapters, offering time in the mentorship program, speaking at conferences, etc. are all extremely valuable qualities a candidate can offer. Connecting

and networking with membership, separating themselves as a contributing member and leader within the profession and developing educational content to assist in bridging the gap between science and application are the three big qualities I would look for in candidates.

• NSCA Kansas State Directors’ Advisory Committee, Member (2011 – 2014)

NOMINATION COMMITTEE QUESTIONSWhy do you want to serve on the Nomination Committee?I have been a member of the NSCA since 2002, and over the last several years, have become increasingly active within the organization. As a member of the Research Consortium, I have reviewed NSCA grant applications. I’ve been a member of the NMBC SIG since its inception, and have just recently concluded my thee-year term on its Executive Council. Since the spring of 2014, I’ve been the NSCA State Director for Kansas, and am preparing to host my second NSCA KS Clinic in just a few weeks’ time. It would be an honor to be a member of the Nomination Committee, and continue my service to the NSCA.

What is your understanding of the organizational structure of the NSCA?I have reviewed the Nomination Committee Handbook and the Guidelines for Committees. Additionally, I have served the NSCA in various ways, including being a current State Director, and a past member of a SIG Executive Council. I understand that the Nomination Committee works independent of the NSCA Board of Directors.

One of the roles of the Nomination Committee is to find qualified candidates for Board of Director positions. How would you go about seeking or identifying candidates who would be representative of the diverse population of our membership, and consistent with the NSCA mission statement?I became involved with the NSCA close to fifteen years ago, while I was working on my Ph.D. at Virginia Commonwealth University. During that time, I earned my CSCS, and I also won a NSCA research grant, which supported my dissertation research. Since then, I have becoming increasingly active within the organization — not only as noted above in my answer to Question 1 — but I also regularly attended National, Regional, and State conferences and clinics, and have presented at all three levels. I’ve published in the JSCR several times, and have been fortunate to be able to collaborate with well-respected researchers at other universities. All of these activities have allowed me to network and build relationships with many outstanding NSCA members. I believe these relationships will help me be effective in seeking and identifying qualified candidates for the Board of Director positions.

NOMINATION COMMITTEE QUESTIONSWhy do you want to serve on the Nomination Committee?I would like to serve on the NSCA Nomination Committee to continue to promote and progress the profession of strength and conditioning. I have a sincere desire to bring all professions within strength and conditioning to the forefront of the sports world. As a member of both regional and national mentor program, ACSM subcommittees, local/regional/national advisory boards: I believe I have gained a wealth of knowledge and experience which I would like to transition to promoting our profession within the state, region, and nation on a grander scale. If promoted to this committee, I will continue to increase members’ awareness through involvement, retention, and education as well as promote the best professionals.

What is your understanding of the organizational structure of the NSCA?A Board of Directors governs the NSCA. All corporate powers shall be exercised by and under the authority of, and the business and affairs of NSCA managed under the direction of, the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors shall be comprised of nine Directors: eight members of the NSCA and one Public Member elected by the Board of Directors. All such Directors will have voting

privileges. In addition, the President-Elect, will serve as an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors for the one-year period preceding the commencement of his/her term as President, and shall have voice but no voting privileges. Eight NSCA members will include the President, three Members, and four Representative members elected by a majority vote. The designation of the Representative member seats shall be reviewed by the Board of Directors every five years and adjusted as necessary based on membership demographic. The first five-year designation of Representative member seats shall be: Educational/Institutional Strength and Conditioning Professional, Personal Trainer, Academician/Researcher, and Sports Medicine Professional. There will be a NSCA Nomination Committee that will serve the interest of the membership by selecting a slate of candidates for the Board of Directors to be elected by a majority vote (of those voting) of the NSCA membership eligible to vote in NSCA elections.

One of the roles of the Nomination Committee is to find qualified candidates for Board of Director positions. How would you go about seeking or identifying candidates who would be representative of the diverse population of our membership, and consistent with the NSCA mission statement?Identifying candidate would be my number one priority. Candidates need to be of a diverse background that would want to promote the following: further the knowledge of our professionals, promote the careers of our members, protect our profession, move our profession forward, award members accomplishments, address public awareness, and expand the profession and members network.
