Community Breakfast Held October 2014Mayor Polly Sierer hosted the 1st Community Breakfast held in October 2014. MikeDickinson of Matt Haley Companies was our guest as he shared the importance of

giving back to the community. The Center recognizes individuals who selflessly give of their time and talent to benefit

the Newark Community. This year, longtime Newark Resident, Gail Chickersky received the Vance Funk Community Support Award for her dedication to the NewarkSenior Center as well as the NHS Alumni Association, the Newark Historical Society, the Pencader Museum and the Delaware Money School. Gail has followed the familytradition of giving back, her mother, Ann Richards Maclary Munyan was on the NSC

Board in the 1980s as a representative of the Soroptimist Club whose national initiative jump started the Center in 1965.

Early Memory Loss Program Development22 Meeting of Minds participants • 1st 6 months of program • 29 volunteers Beginning in 2013 the staff and board realized there was a need throughout the

community to serve individuals who are in the early stages of Alzheimer’s Disease orother forms of dementia. After much research into existing programs and guidance

from the Brookdale foundation a strategy was implemented to develop a trial programat the Newark Senior Center. This guided group experience began with 8 members inJanuary of 2015. After the first few sessions, our caregivers were so thrilled with theprogram, the trial became an ongoing program at the Center. The group was movedinto a larger room at the Center doubling the capacity. A new Early Memory Loss Coordinator was hired and invaluable volunteers serve clients 2 times per week, 4hours per day. This provides a wonderful opportunity for socialization, fitness

activities, creative and mind stretching programing as well as invaluable respite for thecaregivers. From one of our caregivers, “The routine is key, she comes home smiling,

engaged and sometimes even giggly!” Mrs. Z. In response to the ongoing demand by members of our community, the Early MemoryLoss program will be expanded to serve up to 25 individuals 5 days per week in the

coming year.

“I joined the Newark Senior Center about a year and a half ago. Ihave enjoyed coming here about 2 or 3 times a week. There are quitea few things to see and do. I have played scrabble, bingo, gone

swimming in the pool, played shuffleboard, and gone shopping with agroup on Fridays. Since I don’t drive, I have had the pleasure of goingon four trips last year: the paddlewheel boat in Hurlock, MD, ShadyMaple in PA, the musical Oklahoma in Lancaster, PA and the PotomacRiver trip – the Spirit of Washington. I am looking forward to havingsome more enjoyable trips this year. I’ve made so many friends at the

Newark Senior Center.” ~Regina M.
