  • THAT’S WHAT WE TAKE

You have to think big—across big landscapes, through geological eras and

multiple generations—to do land conservation work. We can plant willow wands

one winter and a year later there’s a thicket. But stewarding a rainforest to

maturity: we can start that work, but to complete it will take centuries.

So we make progress one day, one season, one year at a time. In 2017 our staff

spent a significant amount of time working toward our dream of conserving

the proposed Rainforest Reserve, which with the community’s help we hope to

complete by 2021. We broadened the scope of that project, partnering with the

community of Arch Cape to support their efforts to protect their drinking water

source. We acquired an addition to one of our habitat reserves and worked on

more acquisitions that we expect to complete in 2018 or later. And we cared

for the more than 5,000 acres of land we already own or manage in Clatsop,

    Tillamook, and northern Lincoln counties.

We’re patient, and we persevere: that’s how North Coast Land Conservancy

has become one of Oregon’s most respected and successful nonprofit land

conservancies. All I have to do is glance out my office window—overlooking

lands we’ve conserved in the Necanicum Estuary and on Tillamook Head—to be

reminded of why we do this work, and to be glad all over again.

    The Long View

    Wherever I am

    on the North

    Coast—driving

    home to Arch

    Cape from a

    board meeting

    in Seaside,

    or fishing on

    Nehalem Bay—I

    can see that

jagged horizon east of Oswald West State

Park: the mountainous profiles of Angora

Peak and Onion Peak and Mystery Peak.

It’s a reminder of what a big undertaking

    conservation of the Rainforest Reserve

is. It’s amazing that our staff has time

for anything else. Yet they do. Every day

they’re on the land, caring for it, and every

    day they’re pursuing additional conservation

    opportunities and working with community

partners who share our goals. I’m extremely

proud to be part of this organization that

works so hard and cares so deeply for the

people and wildlife where I live.

    PULLERS, PILERS, AND STOMPERS

Last summer North Coast Land Conservancy launched a three-year project to rid the Necanicum River watershed of a fast-spreading weed best known as policeman’s helmet. The key tasks: finding, pulling, piling, and finally stomping on this weed to make sure its flower pods don’t mature. Land Steward Eric Owen estimates that we cleared 55 acres of this pesky plant in July and August—an accomplishment that would have been impossible without the dozens of volunteers who showed up, sometimes weekly, with their garden gloves to attack policeman’s helmet on the riverside where it thrives. We’re not done! Visit NCLCtrust.org for stewardship opportunities in 2018.

    WALKING THE COASTWALK

With their neon orange bandanas, volunteer staffers at CoastWalk Oregon 2017 were impossible to miss, and they seemed to be everywhere. Twenty of them rallied last year to sign participants in and out each day, staff the midpoint rest stops, encourage and walk alongside hikers, share their natural history knowledge—pretty much anything Manager Lynette Villagomez asked of them. In 2017 CoastWalk Oregon raised $44,376 for coastal conservation. Learn more about the three-day event at CoastWalkOregon.org.

A WILLING WEEDERIt was during a solo ramble on the gravel roads winding through the proposed Rainforest Reserve last summer that Vaughn Martin of Clatskanie first learned about North Coast Land Conservancy. NCLC Executive Director Katie Voelke happened to be heading up the same road on her way to Angora Peak, and the two of them stopped and chatted.

Since then Vaughn has been at nearly every stewardship event NCLC has organized, plus several occasions where the stewardship staff just needed an extra hand. He’s planted trees at Circle Creek and pulled weeds there and at Clear

Lake, Wild Ace Lake, and Wolf Bay on the Columbia River. He helped cut Christmas trees on Boneyard Ridge. He’s also become a volunteer site steward, keeping a close eye on both Wild Ace Lake and Sand Creek. And he’s a Sustaining Steward, making monthly donations to NCLC.

“I like the outdoors, and I just like the idea of what NCLC is trying to do to preserve these lands and connect them into conservation corridors,” he says. “They probably have a mission statement. I don’t really know what it is, but from what I see, I agree with it.”

    Vaughn, you nailed it.

AMBASSADORS FOR CONSERVATION Thank you, NCLC volunteers, for your interest, your time, and your dedication to conservation on the Oregon Coast.

Patte Fenderson adds another stalk of policeman’s helmet to the stomp pile at Circle Creek.

Our second year of Weed Warrior Wednesdays brought together staff, summer interns, and volunteers to tackle a variety of stewardship tasks. Here, the crew rests on a pile of invasive knotweed.

Catherine Dunn and Michael Mottmann volunteered to walk sweep at day’s end for CoastWalk Oregon 2017.

    A LASTING OPPORTUNITY

What do you give teenage grandchildren for their birthday? Nancy Hopp of Seaside tackled that challenge by making modest donations to North Coast Land Conservancy in the kids’ names. She had read NCLC’s newsletters and liked what the Conservancy had accomplished in the landscape she lived in.

Then two years ago her father died. Suddenly she had an inheritance—to spend on herself, and to pass on to others. When it came time to update her will and identify organizations to endow, NCLC came to mind. “That’s where my heart is: preserving the land,” she says. “I like to give to something that is lasting.”

Nancy’s townhouse is filled with art, much of it inspired

by nature. She loves living four blocks from the beach and just a few minutes’ drive from the Cove, where she goes on stormy days to watch the waves. She supports and volunteers for a number of worthy causes in the community. But North Coast Land conservancy stands out, she says. “Everything it does is forever.”

A FAMILY AFFAIRBarely a month after moving from St. Louis, Missouri, to Seaside last July, the Thoma family packed a picnic and headed to Circle Creek to join North Coast Land Conservancy’s annual party at the barn and to see what NCLC was all about. They successfully bid on a basket of treats at the silent auction. And they became Sustaining Stewards virtually on the spot. “We usually

contribute to environmental causes,” says dad Sam Thoma, “and we really liked the idea of protecting the local environment around here.” This outdoorsy family regularly hikes, bicycles, and runs together; he thinks they’ll be adding weed-pulling on NCLC lands to the list this summer.

Nature Lesson Carol Vernon was a nature lover with a theatrical streak, as her daughter Gayle Seely tells it. Sometimes on outings in the woods, Carol would pick up a frog or a salamander and present the reluctant amphibian to her three squirming kids, declaring “Nature lesson!” She was especially fond of birds. The last home she shared with her husband of 64 years, Al Vernon, overlooked Neacoxie Creek in Gearhart, and Carol was fond of watching the seasonal parade of bird life through their picture windows: hummingbirds, cedar waxwings, wood ducks. “Carol loved to see them come through,” Al recalls. When cancer overtook Carol, Al had her hospital bed installed in the

living room so Carol could watch the birds.

After Carol’s death in October 2014, Al went to Fairweather House and Gallery and purchased five large framed photographs of birds—Carol’s favorites—taken by naturalist Neal Maine. Al had served on the board of North Coast Land Conservancy for a decade beginning in the late 1980s and had become friends with Neal; together they

had helped launch the Conservancy. Al gave the photographs to Providence Seaside Hospital to brighten the walls of the infusion center where Carol was treated.

Al and others also made memorial gifts to North Coast Land Conservancy in

Carol’s name. In April 2015 Al, the couple’s three children and their spouses, and two of Carol’s nieces traveled to the memorial grove of ancient Sitka spruces

at Circle Creek Conservation Center to join in The Forest Remembers for the first time. It’s an annual reading of the names of all those memorialized with gifts to North Coast Land

Conservancy throughout its history. The family has been back every year since.

“The forest is big for us, and Circle Creek is such a special place,” Gayle says. “We always anticipate her name coming up, alphabetically, in the reading of names, but we hear a lot of other names we know and remember too.

“There’s just something so rewarding about being among trees, where everyone is so small, yet so big.”
