From: Hill, Philip (NRCan/RNCan) Sent: December-04-15 9:43 AM To: ESS.M GSC Pacific Cc: Nicol, Diane (NRCan/RNCan); Greebe, Vanessa (NRCan/RNCan) Subject: Communications with the media I am pleased to inform you that it is no longer necessary to seek prior approval before speaking to the media. If contacted by the media you are free to talk to them on science topics about which you are knowledgeable. Support is offered to all scientists contacted by the media through our regional communications team or through the Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS). You are trusted to use common sense when evaluating your own suitability to talk on a particular subject but the regional communications team (Diane Nicol, Vanessa Greebe) and OCS (Donna Kirkwood, Bruce Stuart and Luc Thivierge) are there to assist with advice if you are not sure. They can also advise about departmental issues, hot topics and current affairs that might influence the direction of a reporter’s questions, so if you feel that the subject area may touch on policy issues, you are encouraged to contact them in advance of the interview. In short their aim is to provide you with support in your interactions with the media. Media training is no longer required as a pre-requisite to talking to the media, but it is strongly encouraged. Most who have taken it would acknowledge that it is helpful for avoiding the pitfalls of media interviews. Please let your supervisor know if you wish to include media training in your training plan. Finally, please continue to use the Media Call Report (http://wwwint2.nrcan.gc.ca/tools-outils/media/mcr- ram/index.cfm?fuseaction=callReport.showCallReportForm&lang uage=en ) to report on all contacts with the media in order to keep the department informed about such communications. We will put this on the agenda for the next staff meeting, but don’t hesitate to contact me if you would like any clarification. Phil
