    FIREARMS INFORMATION SERVICE

    NE of the more important servicesrendered by our Association is inthe field of firearms information. Mem-bers of the NRA Technical Staff andContributing Editors of THE RIFLEMANanswer questions about firearms andrelated subjects initiate studies on re-loading and similar projects evaluateproducts and services and preparemajor articles for the magazine of atype which cannot be secured fromfree-lance sources. During 1960 17 992firearms information letters were an-swered and 196 products evaluated.

    Almost 23000 pieces of materialrelating to range plans were distributedupon individual request.

    LU STHE number of organized groupsaffiliated with NRA has grownsteadily over the years. In 1926 wehad approximately 1300 clubs. Priorto World War II this figure had grownto about 4000 w ith a total today ofalmost 10000 in these categories:

    Safety EducationAnd Marksmanship Training

    URING 1960, the NRAPoliceShoot-ing Program was inaugurated.Under this program our plan of certifiedmarksmanship instructors has been ex-panded to include police who are en-gaged in marksmanship instruction.Special police qualification insignia isavailable to law-enforcement agencieswhich conduct NRA Registered train-ing courses. The NRA tournamentprogram has been expanded to includethe registration and approval of policematches over combat-type courses.

    Basic MarksmanshipFIFTY-FIVE instructors and 23 clubsearned NRA Training Awardsduring 1960.A total of 117,730 individuals, most-ly Juniors, have completed the course.The extent of participation in BasicTraining Courses is: .

    This year, for the first time, the NRA25 Foot Shooting Program was ex-panded to an all-around activity. Qual-ification firing for young people at thisdistance was authorized in 1950. It nowprovides for qualification and competi-tive match firing with both rifle andpistol, by adults and Juniors alike, withCO, gas, pneumatic, and spring-typerifled-barrel air ,guns.

    Certified Instructors NNUAL renewal of all instructor rat-ngs is required. The figures belowshow the number of NRA Certified In-structors recorded in each category:

    Hunter Safety

    TWENTY-NINE states and one Cana-dian province now operate fire-arm safety training programs. There is

    no question that widespread trainingwith the NRA Hunter Safety Courseand attendant publicity have had aninfluence on the decline in firearmsaccidents. Fifteen states and one Cana-dian province have legislation, in oneform or another, on hunter safetytraining. Fourteen additional stateshave official programs by administra-tive action. The number of studentscompleting the course now exceeds200,000 each year-237,314 in 1958,248,001 in 1959, and 234,543 in 1960-with a total of 1,056,275 graduatesat the end of 1960.

    QualificationsQUALIFICATION courses are de-signed to stimulate the newshooter to practice so that he will im-prove his skill, and to recognize suchimprovement by means of specialawards at certain stages. The numberand type of awards issued in 1960 are:Junior Qualifications

    International CompetitionDURING 1960 the United States wasrepresented in the OlympicGames at Rome, Italy, by a team ofrifle, pistol, and clay pigeon shooters.Under the general supervision of theOlympic Rifle and Pistol ShootingCommittees, the National Rifle Asso-ciation handled all arrangements. Capt.William W. McMillan, Jr., USMC, wonthe gold medal for first place in the25-meter Silhouette Pistol Match aftera magnificent shoot-off with a repre-sentative from Finland and one fromRussia. Sgt. James E. Hill, USMC, wonthe silver medal for second place inthe 50-meter Smallbore Prone Match.

    .Marksmanship Qualifications

    The DistinguishedRiflemanmedal award-ed for highest achievement in the NRARifle Qualificationprogram

    VER the years, millions of youngpeople have measured their shoot-ing progress and received recognitionthrough NRA Rifle Qualifications. Be-cause the I5-stage qualification courseshave been so successful and popular,NRA has lifted all age restrictions. Therifle qualifications have been openedto all NRA members and members ofaffiliated clubs. New Pistol Qualifica-tions have been added.The courses are designed to giveencouragement to new shooters and topresent a real challenge to the skillsof shooters who progress to the higherratings. The cal. .22 courses c-an befired on any safe 50-ft. range, the mostprevalent type range. The 25- and,15-ft. qualifications are especiallyadaptable to shooting in horne base-ments and other areas where space islimited.UN 1961

    Ratings are Pro-Marksman, Marks-man, Marksman First Class, Sharp-shooter, 9 Sharpshooter Bars, Expert,and Distinguished Rifle or DistinguishedPistol. Awards include certificates (clubsmay request these free certificates in ad-vance and issue them as earned), lapelpins, medals, and brassards. Clubs maypurchase the pins, medals, andbrassardsin advance in order that they may -bepresented at the time of qualification.Firing for qualification awards isdone in accordance with NRA com-petitive rules except where specific ex-ceptions are made.All of the above qualifications are ata distance of 50 ft. or less. For outdoorrifle shooters THEAMERICANRIFLEMANQualification Course offers awards andrecognition at the popular 50-yd. range.Ten different ratings are provided forscores fired in prone, sitting, kneeling,and standing positions. Cal. .22 targetrifles with metallic sights are used.For members who do not own atarget rifle, but would like to qualifywith a sporting-type cal. .22 rifle, NRAoffers the Light Rifle QualificationCourse. This course consists of 3 rat-ings. Special targets are used and attrac-tive medals and brassards awarded.The new NRA Shotgun Qualifica-tions are designed to please the scatter-gun enthusiasts among NRA membersand clubs. These qualification coursesinclude not only those where the usualtrap and skeet layouts are used, but s o courses where a friend throwsclay pigeons from a hand- or foot-operated trap. The latter can be en-joyed as a club, family, or groupshooting sport, but it is necessary tohave at least 300 yds. of open, safeshooting area beyond the firer. Four

    different ratings are provided andawards consist of medals, pins, bras-sards, and certificates. In additionthere is the cal. .22 shotgun qualifica-tion course fired with a cal. .22 shot-gun in an area 100x75 yds.For full details on any of these pro-grams, write to the National RifleAssociation, 1600 Rhode Island Ave.,N.     Build NRA ContestThe Lyman Gun Sight Corp. is con-ducting a Help BUILD NRA Con-test through the Lyman Reloaders
