statement of Significance:

The Ben and Mary Davis House (1933) at 100 South Resident is a good example of Tudor Revival style architecture in the community. It retains a high degree of integrity and is significant to the architecture of Wharton. It is eligible under Criterion C for architecture and is associated with the context: Community Development in Wharton, Texas, 1875-1942.

Ben and Mary Davis purchased the property from A.C. and Mary Horton i n 1912 for $1,750 and b u i l t the house around 1933. Davis managed a grocery store on the north side of the downtown square i n Wharton. He and his wife conveyed the house to David D. Cozier, the present owner, i n 1946 for $20,000.

The Davis House i s a good example of the Tudor Revival s t y l e that was popular i n the lat e 1920s and 1930s. I t s brick veneer ex t e r i o r , steeply pitched, gable and hipped roof are characteristic of t h i s a r c h i t e c t u r a l expression. I t retains a high degree of i n t e g r i t y and i s s i g n i f i c a n t t o the domestic architecture i n the community.
