Sub.: Report of seminar cum poster presentation on “Nuclear Energy - The Vital Source” conducted at Uka Tarsadia University, Bardoli on 27th Sept., 2018.

काकरापार गुजरात थल, एनपीसीआईएल अपने जनजाग कता एवं आउटर च काय म क यव थत पहंचु को मजबूत बनाने के उ े य से लगातार नए-नए यास करता रहता है। ी एम.पी.हंसोरा, थल िनदेशक के नेतृ व एवं ेरणा और ी एम.वी.पार ख, िश ण अधी क, काकरापार गुजरात थल के मागदशन म 27 िसतंबर, 2018 को उका तरसा डया व व व ालय, बारडोली म ‘’नािभक य ऊजा – अ याव यक ोत’’ वषय पर संगो ठ एवं पो टर तुतीकरण काय म का आयोजन कया गया। भौितक वभाग, उका तरसा डया व व व ालय ने इस काय म का आयोजन कया। संगो ठ का ल य था एक सुर त, आिथक प से यावहा रक, पयावरण हतैषी और द घकालीन व ुत ऊजा ोत के प म नािभक य ऊजा, परमाणु व ुत संयं के रए टर भौितक क पहलुएं, हमारे चारो तरफ रे डयोस कयता-िमथक एवं त य, सामा जक लाभ हेतु परमाणु ऊजा वभाग क भूिमका और और परमाणु व ुत संयं म योग कए गए मापयं ण क ओर व ाथ समूह का यान आक षत करना।

Kakrapar Gujarat Site, NPCIL has been persistently innovating upon its

Public Awareness & outreach Programme with the objective of strengthening the

systematic approach to these activities. On the initiative and encouragement

from Shri M. P. Hansora, Site Director and guidance from Shri M V Parikh, Training

Superintendent, Kakrapar Gujarat Site, a seminar cum poster presentation on

“Nuclear Energy- The Vital Source” was conducted at Uka Tarsadia University,

Bardoli on 27th September, 2018. Dept. of Physics, Uka Tarsadia University was

organising the programme. The aim of the seminar was to draw attention of

student community towards Nuclear Power as Safe, economical, environmentally

benign & long term source of electrical energy, Reactor physics aspect of nuclear

power plant, Radioactivity around us – myths and facts along with role of DAE to

societal benefits as well as instrumentation used in NPP.

संगो ठ एवं पो टर तुतीकरण लगभग 10:15 बजे से ारंभ होकर 16:30 तक समा त हआ।ु इस संगो ठ म फ ज स, केिम , माइ ोबायोलॉजी, इले कल इंजीिनय रंग एवं मेकेिनकल इंजीिनय रंग वभाग के 227 व ाथ एवं संकाय सद य ने भाग िलया। अ य संकाय सद य म ो.एन.सी.शाह, सलाहकार, उका तरसा डया व व व ालय, ो.एन.कृ णमूित, ड न, व ान का संकाय सद य, ो.राज पाट ल, ड न, इंजीिनय रंग का संकाय सद य, डॉ. ी िम ा, कुल सिचव, वभागा य , भौितक वभाग, डॉ. जैिमन राय, सहायक ोफेसर, भौितक वभाग, डॉ.ए.के डया, सहायक ोफेसर, भौितक वभाग काय म म उप थत थे।

The seminar cum poster presentation began at around 10:15 hrs and lasted

up to 16:30 hrs. The seminar was attended by 227 students & faculties of

department of physics, chemistry, microbiology, electrical engineering and

mechanical engineering. Among other faculties, Prof. N. C. Shah, Adviser to Uka

Tarsadia University, Prof. N. Krishnamurthy, Dean, Faculty of Science, Prof. Raj Patil,

Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Shree Mishra, Registrar & HOD, Dept. of Physics,

Dr. Jaimin Ray, Assistant Professor Dept. of Physics, Dr. A. Kedia, Assistant Prof.,

Dept. of Physics were present in the programme.

ी एम.वी.पार ख, िश ण अधी क, काकरापार गुजरात थल इस काय म के मु य अितिथ थे। उ ह ने ‘’नािभक य रए टर के आधारभू त िस ांत एवं भारतीय नािभक य व ुत काय म’’ पर या यान तुत कया। अपने या यान के दौरान उ ह ने व ुत क आव यकता, व ुत उ पादन के ोत, व छ एवं ह रत ऊजा, -चरणीय नािभक य व ुत काय म, नािभक य व ुत संयं के रए टर भौितक के पहलू, नािभक य व ुत संयं के संर ा ल ण आ द पर काश डाला।

Shri M. V. Parikh, Training Superintendent, Kakrapar Gujarat Site was the

chief guest. He delivered the first lecture on “Fundamentals of Nuclear Reactor &

Indian Nuclear power Program”. During his lecture, he had explained the need of

electrical energy, sources of electrical energy production, clean and green

energy, three stage nuclear power programmes, Reactor physics aspect of

nuclear power plant, safety features of Nuclear power plant etc.

Dr. A. K. Patra, Officer-in-Charge, Environmental Survey Laboratory (ESL),

Kakrapar Gujarat Site delivered the lecture on “Radiation - A Fact of Life,

Environment Impact Assessment around Kakrapar Gujarat Site & DAE-Societal

Benefits”. He has explained the fundamentals of Nuclear Radiation, radioactivity

in environment, various sources and exposures in the daily life, the radiation

aspects of NPP operation, and extremely low radioactive releases by NPPs against

natural radioactivity around us. The inevitability of radioactivity and comparison of

Banana Equivalent Dose of 0.1 µSv against hypothetical contribution of a nuclear

reactor was new and interesting to the audience. The functioning of radiation

measuring instruments useful to measure the background radiation level was

demonstrated to the students and faculties.

रे डयोस यता के आधारभूत िस ांत, हमारे आस-पास उप थत रे डयोस यता से दैिनक ए सपोजर तथा चालनरत नािभक य ऊजा संयं के कारण अित नग य ए सपोजर वषय को शािमल कया गया। उ ह ने समाज के विभ न े जैसे कसर उपचार, भोजन वसं मण, नगरपािलका मलजल उपचार, जल शु करण, उ च पैदावार वाली फसल इ या द म परमाणु ऊजा वभाग के योगदान के संदभ म भी व ततृ जानकार द । ायोिगक दशन के भाग के प म भौितक वभाग के दो व ािथय ने पे म आईड टफायर एवं एटमटे स सव मीटर से उका तरसा डया व व व ालय के कपस के भीतर 14 विभ न तान पर पृ ठभौिमक व करण तर को मापा। कपस के भीतर पृ ठभौिमक गामा व करण का तर 3-9 µR/hr के बीच का तर पाया गया जो काकरापार गुजरात थल म पाया जाता है और उसे ोताओं के सम तुत कया।

The functioning of radiation measuring instruments useful to measure the

background gamma radiation level was demonstrated to the students. As a part

of practical demonstration, the background gamma radiation level was

measured around Uka Tarsadia University campus. Two students from Physics

department were involved in measuring the background radiation level at 14

different locations within the campus by using Spectrum identifinder and Atomtex

survey meter. The background gamma radiation level within the campus was

found to be in the range of 3 - 9 µR/hr which is comparable with Kakrapar Gujarat

site and the same was presented to the audience.

Shri M J Makwana, Scientific Officer/E, NTC, Kakrapar Gujarat site delivered

the lecture on “Nuclear Instrumentation and detection of radiation”. He has

explained the instruments used for measuring pressure, flow, level and

temperature to control the process parameter within the set values. He has

explained about different types of radiation detection instruments such as

ionisation chamber, GM counter etc.

After lunch, poster session was started. 28 posters participated by 54

students were displayed in the poster presentation. The titles of the posters are;

All the students & faculty members were positive about measures taken to

make nuclear energy safe & environmentally benign. They were very keen to

learn during the interaction.
