Now I Can Speak English
Someday I will be able to speak English fl uently. Having
a concrete image in my mind of myself speaking good
English will lead to improvement. I know that in order
to achieve this goal, it's important to first have a clear
picture in my head. If I can visualize my goal and really
believe in my future success, my actions will naturally
follow.
When I can speak English fluently, I will be living the
following dream life.
Work-wise, I will be using English daily. I won't have any
problems writing English e-mails or faxes. Answering phones
used to make me nervous, but now I can communicate
without a problem. Large phone conferences are a little
trickier, but I'm getting more and more used to them every
day. In one-on-one phone meetings, I do fine. Indeed, I
even enjoy them. I am proud of myself for overcoming the
language and cultural barriers at work. Of course, I am
extremely thankful for the advances in technology, such
as the Internet, that make it easier to do business across
borders.

Attending to foreign clients when they visit Japan is, of
course, part of my job. I am pleased that I can get to know
them personally, not only through work, but also as their
tour guide. Business trips to English-speaking countries have
been increasing. Just recently, I gave a presentation abroad in
English which turned out to be a huge success. I was relaxed
and managed to enjoy the question and answer session that
I had been dreading. The success of that presentation made
all of my practicing and studying worthwhile. I am truly glad
that I did not give up.
Not only is my work life better, but on a personal note,
I'm making many foreign friends since I no longer have a
problem communicating. I went to visit a friend in Sydney
during my last long vacation and was introduced to many new
people at a house party. I used to have a hard time at parties
because conversations jump from topic to topic and some
people are drunk. But now I can just relax and enjoy myself. I
also used to think in Japanese and then translate my thoughts
into English before speaking, but now I can think and talk
in English. These days, one of the highlights of my week is
talking to my friends overseas, face-to-face using a webcam.
I read English paperback books without any difficulty.
Occasionally, there are words or phrases I haven't learned
yet, but I can figure out their meaning from the context.
I have finally finished reading several books I had always
wanted to read in the original version. The books are very
inspiring when read in their original form. Perhaps it won't
be too long before the pile of books I've finished reading
reaches the ceiling.
When I watch English movies, I understand the content and
can get into the movie without the help of subtitles. I have
to admit, movies make me cry in frustration sometimes.
It's a little tough when they are full of slang or the actors or
actresses have strong accents, but I can still understand if I
turn on the English subtitles. Since I can watch English TV
shows without subtitles, I buy DVDs directly from American
websites. Even with the cost of shipping, it turns out to be
much cheaper than buying them here in Japan. I try to watch
as many English movies and TV shows as possible because
it's a fun way to learn everyday English expressions.
I also used to listen to songs without having any idea what they
were about, but now I can understand the lyrics. I realize now
that there are more to the songs than just pretty melodies.

When I see foreigners in Japan, I can talk to them without
hesitation. I used to hesitate when asked for directions, but
now there are times when I choose to approach foreigners
and offer help.
What makes me truly happy about being able to speak
English is that I can directly access information in English.
This makes a huge difference in business, since English-
speaking countries lead the world in many fields. Just by
understanding English, the amount of information available
and the speed of obtaining it increases considerably. It's scary
to think about the amount of information that would have
been unavailable to me had I not studied English. Thank god
I persisted. Thank god that not only did I study, but I believed
in myself and kept using English even when I was still not
very good at it.
I feel that I have become more confident and a better
person through the process of fi nishing what I set out to do.
Studying English has increased my self-confidence, and I
now feel prepared to pursue new goals.
Learning English has truly broadened my world. I will
continue to work on improving, but I think it's also time
I started studying a new language. I mastered English,
so there is no reason I can't master another language.
Chinese is the most commonly spoken language in the
world, Spanish is used in much of South America, and
French covers many African countries. Each language
has its own appeal. Opening a new door to a new world
through a new language, while continuing to study
English, may be quite an adventure!
I am so happy that I kept studying. I am so glad I kept
speaking in English. I would like to thank myself for
having walked the distance. Thanks, me!

I won't
have any problems writing English e-mails or faxes.
Answering phones used to make me nervous, but now
I can communicate without a problem. Large phone
conferences are a little trickier, but I'm getting more
and more used to them every day. In one-on-one phone
meetings, I do fine. Indeed, I even enjoy them. I am
proud of myself for overcoming the language and cultural
barriers at work. Of course, I am extremely thankful for
the advances in technology, such as the Internet, that
make it easier to do business across borders.
Attending to foreign clients when they visit Japan is, of
course, part of my job. I am pleased that I can get to know
them personally, not only through work, but also as their
tour guide. Business trips to English-speaking countries
have been increasing. Just recently, I gave a presentation
abroad in English which turned out to be a huge success.
I was relaxed and managed to enjoy the question and
answer session that I had been dreading. The success of
that presentation made all of my practicing and studying
worthwhile. I am truly glad that I did not give up.
Not only is my work life better, but on a personal note,
I'm making many foreign friends since I no longer have a
problem communicating. I went to visit a friend in Sydney
during my last long vacation and was introduced to many
new people at a house party. I used to have a hard time
at parties because conversations jump from topic to topic
and some people are drunk. But now I can just relax and
enjoy myself. I also used to think in Japanese and then
translate my thoughts into English before speaking, but
now I can think and talk in English. These days, one
of the highlights of my week is talking to my friends

overseas, face-to-face using a webcam.
I read English paperback books without any dif ficulty.
Occasionally, there are words or phrases I haven't learned
yet, but I can fi gure out their meaning from the context.
I have fi nally fi nished reading several books I had always
wanted to read in the original version. The books are
very inspiring when read in their original form. Perhaps
it won't be too long before the pile of books I've fi nished
reading reaches the ceiling.
When I watch English movies, I understand the content
and can get into the movie without the help of subtitles.
I have to admit, movies make me cr y in frustration
sometimes. It's a little tough when they are full of slang or
the actors or actresses have strong accents, but I can still
understand if I turn on the English subtitles. Since I can
watch English TV shows without subtitles, I buy DVDs
directly from American websites. Even with the cost of
shipping, it turns out to be much cheaper than buying
them here in Japan. I tr y to watch as many English
movies and TV shows as possible because it's a fun way to
learn everyday English expressions.
I also used to listen to songs without having any idea what
they were about, but now I can understand the lyrics. I
realize now that there are more to the songs than just
pretty melodies.
When I see foreigners in Japan, I can talk to them without
hesitation. I used to hesitate when asked for directions,
but now there are times when I choose to approach
foreigners and offer help.
I feel that I have become more confident and a better
person through the process of fi nishing what I set out to
do. Studying English has increased my self-confidence,
and I now feel prepared to pursue new goals.
