At the Altadena YAL, the students have the opportunity to strengthen their abilities and develop marketable skills with an extensive use of technology in the classroom.

Based on the strong belief that children learn and grow through play, and need a healthy balance of structured activities , Our Fun-Fit program offers ample opportunities to play in a nurturing attentive environment

This month our youth were given the opportunity to mentor younger kids at our YAL. The kids that were 12 and older adopted the younger kids ages 11 and under. Our Jr. Mentors will be helping their mentees with homework and be there to talk about any issues that may arise at school. The goal of this program is to mold our kids into positive role models within their community .

For community service this month our kids helped with the planning and preparation of our Thanksgiving dinner. They organized the menu and helped with the cooking. The dinner over all was a huge success.

This month the Compton YAL did a can food drive, which will extend into the Christmas season. A friendly boys vs. girl competition was put in place to see which team could bring in the most items. This month was the

start of the end of year festivities and the students and their families pulled together to have a family style thanksgiving dinner, where an open invitation was given to family and friends, in the area.

Earlier this month we took the kids to the beach after school one day.

They were able to relax and socialize with members of the Temple City YAL at a bonfire that we made at

night.

Our kids had the opportunity to help those less fortunate

and give back to the community. They left with a greater appreciation of what they had in their own lives.

For our community service this month, we went to Pamela Park on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. We joined the Temple YAL in feeding the needy families that lived in the neighborhood.

This month we had the opportunity to take our kids to several college sporting events. We took the Judo athletes to the UCLA football game on November 19th as a reward for their hard work and dedication to the Dojo. On November 22nd we took some of the LEA kids to a USC basketball game as a reward for improvement of their leadership skills that they have been showing in the past semester.

For the community service project this month the local Sam’s Club donated turkey baskets that the LEA officers were able to drop off to needy families in the community. LEA officers dressed out in their uniforms to help the families in needs fulfill their Thanksgiving holiday.

LAKEWOOD Y.A.L

From November 11th to 13th, the Lakewood YAL departed to Carlsbad State Beach near San Diego, Ca. For many of the campers this was a first time experience as they had not had the opportunity to camp on a beach. With the guidance of Deputy Harcrow and Ms. Sandra, the teens assembled tents and cooking stations. The YAL members also rotated

meal time chores such as cooking, serving and cleaning. YAL members walked away from this experience with lessons on collaboration and team work.

Teens from the Lakewood YAL engaged in their monthly philanthropic service at the Senior Center in Hawaiian Gardens, CA. The YAL members take an active role

in leading the pledge of allegiance. In addition, the teens assist the adult volunteers by distributing milk and lunch trays to the Seniors. The teens also engage in social conversation with the elder residents of the city in order to

develop their interpersonal communication skills.

For the month of November, the community service project was a canned food drive. The students donated canned and non-perishable food for the holidays. The students realize that not everyone is fortunate enough to have a Thanksgiving dinner. They donated food for the holiday to those in need. They understand the importance of giving back to their community and realize the importance of giving and being thankful for what they have.

The children enjoyed a delicious Thanksgiving Dinner together at the Norwalk YAL. The children were thankful to sit down with

family and friends.

On November 2 the Norwalk kids celebrated the Dia de Los Muertos by decorating sugar skulls. This holiday is from Mexico where families remember their ancestors whose souls have departed. Chef Mary Gonzalez taught the Norwalk kids how to decorated sugar skulls with colored frosting. Magaly Sandoval said “I can hardly wait to take this home and put it on our alter we made for our family”.

The Community service project that the Norwalk YAL kids particiapatited in this month was a canned food drive . They collected cans and donated them to the St. Matthias church soup kitchen . The church serves about 100 or more daily , they also serve thanksgiving dinners. We also donated shoes and clothes to the church.

Our community service project consisted of decorating for the senior citizens’ lunch and also beautifying for the canned food dropout spot. We are currently collecting cans for the needy families in the community .

For all of the hard work the kids have put in we treated them to a USC basketball game and they also got to take a picture with one of the players.

This past month as part of our Colorful flags program we learned mandarin phrases, at the end of the language we made a cultural dish (incorporating the life skills and cooking class) of lemon sesame chicken.

Tutoring is in full session at Pico Rivera this month. With the help of our staff and deputies, our kids are working hard to complete all their homework for the week.

For community service, the teens took pride in the YAL Center by cleaning the tables, windows, mopping and sweeping the floors. The goal that was achieved was team work by having all the youth and mentors participate as a team. The students learned the importance of cleaning up after themselves and being responsible.

The teens received a brand new basketball arcade system. The y were so excited that they decided to assemble it that same day! By taking on this project the teens were able work and communitcate together.

This month for our SYLC program the kids volunteered in our annual Thanksgiving Dinner for the community. Our children were responsible for setting up, cleaning up, and serving over 500 plates for the community members. This year we combined our soccer banquet with our community Thanksgiving Dinner.

November 2011

While people enjoyed their dinner we called up kids from the soccer team and handed them a certificate, trophy, and team picture. After all the children received their awards they received a warm, loud applause from everybody in the community.

During the month of November the South LA leadership council conducted a food drive. The days before Thanksgiving the

food was put together into Thanksgiving baskets which contained turkeys and all the trimmings. The deputies and some of the YAL students delivered the baskets around to

families in the community. This was a great way for the children to get into the holiday season of giving.

TEMPLE Y.A.L November 2011

This month the Temple YAL focused on being Thankful and giving back to the community. Along with park staff we held our annual Thanksgiving Dinner where the youth served a delicious dinner to approximately 350 of their friends and family. On Thanksgiving day some of our youth also sacrificed their holiday to visit the Fred Jordan Mission. At the Mission, they prepared food packages to hand out to 3000 needy individuals and families on skid row and they even met the mayor of Los Angeles! Through this experience the kids were able to gain a better understanding and respect for the hardships that some of the families have during the holidays.

For a fun incentive trip we

took a group of youth to

Huntington beach. It gave

the kids a chance to enjoy

their week off from school

with their friends. They

were able to enjoy the sun,

play games, swim and have

a bonfire with the East LA

YAL.

The Walnut Sheriff’s Youth Activities League participated in the annual Buckboard Parade and Festival. The parade honored the many different organizations in the community including the YAL. The youth enjoyed showing pride for their center by riding in a Sheriff’s tuck with a giant YAL banner.

For community service this month the youth volunteered their time to do a complete center clean up. This project helped the youth take pride in their center. The kids were able to leave the YAL with a great sense of gratification after the project was completed.
