Dear Parents/Guardians,
Thank you for your fabulous support again for the Dash for Cash, OLPH initiative. This year all students ran again with fantastic
stamina and raised a substantial amount of money. This money will be put to good use as it will support air conditioning and net
books for our students at OLPH. Special thank you goes out to all parent volunteers, Cumbrae ’ s, Kosc Family for buns and condiments, Cath Collins for the
bushels of tasty apples, parent donations, CSAC parents and Andrea Richmond and Tanya Newman for organizing this successful event on behalf of the school.
As the weather gets cooler each day, please ensure that students continue to come to school well prepared to go outside. All students should be dressed
appropriately, so that they may participate in all aspects of the school program. Insulated jackets, snow pants, hats , gloves, scarves and warm boots will be
necessary as the temperature begins to drop. We recommend that parents and guardians label all items of clothing. Please also keep a labelled pair of indoor
shoes in your child ’ s classroom, so that we can keep our classrooms dry. We do not want our students walking around in their socks.
Students who are well enough to attend school will go out for recess. In cases of extreme cold or inclement storms, recess will be held indoors. During inclement
weather, students will be inside and supervised indoors by our teaching staff.
Unpacking our EQAO Results and Statistics:
Congratulations! OLPH has attained outstanding results in many areas of this Provincial Assessment. The students in grade three have secured a 98 % in
Reading , 98% Writing and 96 % in Mathematics. The grade 6 students have secured a 96 % in Reading, 96 % in Writing and 96% in Mathematics.
Our OLPH students ’ ability to develop a main idea with supporting details, organize information and ideas in a coherent manner, use spelling, grammar,
punctuation is really exceptional as shown in the details of this assessment. Our target goal of improving geometric understandings and spatial reasoning:
comparing two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional figures and sort them by their geometric properties is well above the provincial average. The grade six
students were able to classify and construct polygons and angles, sketch three-dimensional figures, and construct three-dimensional figures from
drawings. They were also able to describe the location of geometric shapes in the first quadrant of a coordinate system, and rotate two dimensional shapes with
100% of accuracy. Our OLPH teaching staff, parent support and Smart board resources have allowed us to excel in these spatial reasoning components of this
assessment. Thank you to everyone for their excellent work throughout the school year.
Please see attached PDF for detailed results.

Greening the school grounds continues to be at the forefront of the OLPH
Eco School initiatives. On Saturday, October 13th, despite the weather, the
community rallied together to tidy up the gardens ready for the winter. Many
thanks go to Natalia Dukszta for organizing the event and to Karen Dobrucki
for her gardening expertise as well as everyone who came to help.
The school has been given 400 bulbs to plant in our garden this fall. Again,
due to the generosity of Kelly Cescon giving the school community her time,
each class is planting a bulb this fall with her help. Thank you!
Eco Club is inviting new members to join, starting in November from grades
6, 7 and 8 and will be regularly sending information to the school community
on how to take care of our environment in a sustainable way. The focus will
be on REDUCING, RE-USING and recycling in all areas of our school lives.
REMEMBER – to bring in your old printer cartridges, cell phones, digital cameras and laptops to room 315 so that we can recycle them and collect funds to continue to green our school grounds.

We are delighted to advise that OLPH students will present Advent Concerts in
December 2012. The Concerts will be held in the gymnasium on December 17
and 18 during the school day. There will be 5 separate concerts, each of
which will feature 3 or 4 classes. Each student will receive 2 tickets for the
concert in which he or she is performing. This restriction on tickets is
necessary to comply with fire regulations. If you would like more than 2 tickets
for your child ’ s concert, please ask the parents of your child ’ s classmates if
they have any spare tickets.
To add to the festive cheer, there will be time for parents to mingle and enjoy
coffee and treats before and after each concert. The coffee and treats are an
initiative of the student “ Me to We ” campaign. Please come prepared to
support this initiative and enjoy a Christmas visit with other parents. Father
Jim will attend as many concerts as his schedule permits.

DASH FOR CASH RAISES $15 000!!
The 8th Annual Dash for Cash Fundraiser was a huge success! Together the
school community raised over $15 000 for the OLPH Capital Campaign! The
day kicked off with the most popular event of the day, the teachers'
run! Students were thrilled to cheer on the staff as they ran around the
school track demonstrating great school spirit! Every class then had an
opportunity to run for fun and enjoy the music provided by the grade 8 students.
There were many lucky draws throughout the day and everyone enjoyed a hot
dog lunch and juicy apples!
Many thanks to all the students and staff for their enthusiastic participation and
to the many parents who contributed to the success of the day!

Divisional Race Update
We are so pleased to announce that OLPH Catholic School placed first overall ( after a
recount ) in the Divisional Cross Country Meet held on Wednesday October 17th, 2012
at the Beaches Boardwalk course. All races in all divisions were exemplary and some
outstanding personal and team bests were attained. Congratulations to all students,
coaches and parents for another great OLPH accomplishment! As an important special
note I would like to acknowledge the superb efforts of the Gr. 3 Boys, Gr. 4 Boys and
Girls, Gr. 5 Boys and Girls, and Grade 6 Girls who all placed first as a grade team. I
would like to personally thank all the students that ran up one to three levels for their
dedication to the total school achievement. Sixty three students advanced to the Re-
gional meet.
Congratulations and great job!
