OPENS LEEDS FILM FESTIVAL
A CELEBRATION OFIRISH ARTS
In This Issue
Dear Readers, It’s always fascinating to see the variety of things going on in our area. The Leeds International Film Festival is about to get underway – launching with the fabulous new Wuthering Heights and screening over 300 other films.
It’s time again, too, for the Leeds Gathering – a celebration of Celtic music and arts. A new Ale Festival is planned for Headingley in December, celebrating Yorkshire beers. We take a light-hearted look at looking good for the festive season. And, we bring you news of new services, numerous Christmas fairs and charity events, exhibitions, performances and much more.
Christmas really is rapidly approaching and next month we are going to take a look at one of the things closest to our hearts during this season......food! We look forward to hearing about what will be going on in your neck of the woods. Please send us your news by 1st November. The deadline for December advertising is 4th November
Kind regards
Carole, Jack and the team

dreamed of.”
After training in Zurich, Switzerland Dr Chris Siddons is now one of the first dental surgeons in the UK pioneering a new one stage system of direct veneers -
COMPONEERS. Chris says “COMPONEERS can correct twisted teeth, cover gaps between the front teeth, cover large discoloured fillings, give an instant white smile to discoloured teeth and cover broken tooth edges and cracks, the perfect solution for many patients who don’t want traditional porcelain veneers.” Your new life starts with your first smile after the treatment. Enjoy your “Smile to Go”!

LIFE & STYLE
It could have been Barcelona! Cast your mind back to that fabulous week at the end of September. Tem-peratures were breaking records and everyone had jumped back into their summer clothes. We wandered down Greek Street in Leeds and you really could have thought you were in some sunny Spanish city – people poured out into the street sipping on cold beer and wine, the restau-rants had thrown open their doors, everyone was all smiles. Time for some tapas to accompany that cold beer! And look at that........there’s La Tasca, Spanish music drifting out the door, adding to the tempo-rary holiday atmosphere on Greek Street.
Inside the restaurant seemed bright-er – gone were the red walls. Taking advantage of the warm evening we sat by the open doors and started examining the menu. The worst thing about tapas is it is so hard to choose! The great thing about it is you can try so many different things! They suggest choosing three dishes each – which we did, then threw in another for good measure!
There were king prawns sizzling in chilli and garlic-infused oil; salt baked langoustines; and corn-fed chicken breast, cooked with smoked paprika, chorizo, mixed peppers, and onion in a white wine and cream sauce. Then a ‘superfood’ salad with red quinoa, lentils, avocado and to-matoes, marinated in infused lemon oil; mushrooms sautéed in garlic and white wine; and a fabulous mixed bean, orange and mint salad.
The king prawns were suitably spicy and the langoustines delicious (al-though I do sometimes wonder if all that peeling is worth the trouble – on second thoughts, yes it is!). The smoked paprika and chorizo gave the chicken a unique, rich flavour and the ‘superfood’ salad was a rev-elation. I admit I expected miracles after eating it, but I’m still waiting! I loved the mixed bean salad – so cool and fresh and perfect for that Indian Summer evening.
Only the mushrooms were a slight disappointment – I’m sure some people would love them, but I craved a little more ‘umph’.
All in all it was a very enjoyable evening. The service was amazing and we were lucky enough to hit upon one of their ‘tasting’ evenings and were treated to tastes of paella, manchengo cheese, cured meats and sherry.
Oh, order bread with your tapas – not only is it great bread, you’ll need it to mop up all that lovely sauce.

So how did Emily picture him?Would it have been someone likeTomHardy,TimothyDalton,orRalphFiennes, just three of the manywhite actors who have played thepart? Sometimes they had blackhair, sometimes faces darkened alittle withmakeup. I think that An-drea Arnold might be close to themark with James Howson star oftherecentawardwinningfilmadap-

The young Heathcliff speaks ‘gib-berish’ when he first comes backwith Mr Earnshaw. So which lan-guageisit?Bengali?Roma?AnAfri-canlanguage?AstrongpatoisfromJamaica?
Emily would have been well-ac-quaintedwiththeevilsoftheslavetrade(Liverpoolwasaslavingport)through her father Patrick, an ad-mireroftheanti-slaverycampaignerWilliam Wilberforce MP, who hadsponsoredhimwhenhewasapoorstudent at Cambridge University, and she would have known aboutthe magnificent Yorkshire houses
