Military Spouse Employment Partnership

Military spouses are highly qualified and well

educated for a wide range of careers, although

they face a 25% unemployment rate and

a 25% wage gap compared to their civilian

counterparts, 85% of these spouses want or

need employment, yet frequent relocation is

often a barrier to finding and maintaining a

rewarding career. The inability of spouses to

obtain and retain fulfilling employment as they

relocate with the military affects their quality of

life, presents many challenges, and affects the

readiness of the military force.

The Presidential Study Directive-9 Report,

Strengthening Our Military Families: Meeting

America’s Commitment, published January 25,

2011, highlights the need for a unified Federal

government approach to help develop career and

education opportunities for military spouses.

Among the target activities to accomplish this

goal is increasing opportunities for military

spouses to obtain private sector careers. As

a result, the Department of Defense (DoD)

leveraged the successful partnerships created

under the Army Spouse Employment Partnership

by expanding the program to Navy, Marine Corps,

and Air Force spouses. The expanded program

-- the Military Spouse Employment Partnership

(MSEP) -- officially launched in June 2011 during

a ceremony at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

MSEP is part of DoD’s broader Spouse Education

and Career Opportunities (SECO) initiative, which

seeks to strengthen the education and career

opportunities of military spouses by providing

career exploration opportunities to help them

understand their skills, interests,

recruitment and employment solution, creates

employment connections that provide companies

with direct access to military spouses seeking

career opportunities and spouses with direct

access to employers who are actively recruiting.

MSEP currently has more than 220 partners, who

have hired more than 60,000 military spouses.

For additional information about MSEP visit:

contact the Employment Readiness Program

Manager, 305.437.2639, or e-mail: joe.pagan1.civ@

FAMILY SUPPORT CENTER NEWSResume and Interview/Mock Technique Workshops

The civilian resume is a selling tool that outlines your skills and experiences so an employer can see, at a glance, how you can contribute to the employer’s workplace. More to the point, what we are actually doing is applying for an interview. Only in the rarest of cases will a resume in and of itself directly secure a job offer. The goal of an effective civilian resume is to highlight and summarize a person’s qualifications.

If you’re interested in learning more about the three types of civilian resumes; Chronological, Functional, and Combination consider attending How to Create an Effective Civilian Resume:

• Thursday, 13 November 2014, 1-4pm

• USAG-Miami, Installation Services Center, Army Community Service (ACS) Classroom, 9301 NW 33rd Street, Doral, FL 33172

For those interested in learning more about interviewing, register for the Interviewing/Mock Techniques Workshop:

• 24 November 2014, 1-4pm

• USAG-Miami, Installation Services Center, ACS Classroom, 9301 NW 33rd Street, Doral, FL 33172

All attendees will receive resources, including a copy of Quick Resume Guide - Six Steps to Building an Effective Resume, or an Interview Guide.

Space is available for 14 attendees.

Spouses are highly encouraged to attend.

To register, send an e-mail to [email protected], or call 305.437.2639.

eBenefits

What is eBenefits?eBenefits is a joint VA/DoD web portal that provides resources and self-service capabilities to Veterans, Service members, and their families to research, access and manage their VA and military benefits and personal information. eBenefits uses secure credentials to allow access to personal information and gives users the ability to perform numerous self-service functions. It also provides a list of links to other sites that provide information about military and Veteran benefits. It is an essential way for Veterans, Service members, and their families to receive access to and service from VA and DoD.

What can you do in eBenefits? Some of the features within eBenefits allow Veterans and Service members to access official military personnel documents, view the status of their disability compensation claim, transfer entitlement of Post-9/11 GI Bill to eligible dependents (Service members only,) and register for and update direct deposit information for certain benefits.

How is eBenefits accessed?

eBenefits is located at www.ebenefits.va.gov. Before Veterans can access and use eBenefits they must be listed in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) and obtain a DS Logon. Service members can access eBenefits with a DS Logon or Common Access Card (CAC). They can choose from two levels of registration, DS Logon Level 1 (Basic) and DS Logon Level 2 (Premium). Note: If Veterans

attempt to register and are informed they have no DEERS record, VA will first need to verify their military service and add them to DEERS. All VA Regional Offices have staff familiar with procedures for adding a Veteran to DEERS.

What is a DS Logon? A DS Logon is a secure identity (username and password) that is used by various DoD and VA websites, including eBenefits. If you are already registered in DEERS, you are eligible for a DS Logon. Once you have a DS Logon, it’s valid for the rest of your life.

How do I register for an eBenefits account? You can register for an eBenefits account online using the eBenefits DS Logon Account Registration Wizard. There are two types of registration, Basic and Premium. You will be walked through a series of questions to assist you in obtaining a Premium eBenefits Account, which gives you the highest level of access to eBenefits features. With a Premium Account you can view personal data about yourself in VA and DoD systems, apply for benefits online, check the status of your claims, update your address records, and more. To get a Premium eBenefits Account, you must verify your identity.

Many people will be able to verify their identity online by answering a few security questions. Service members may verify their identity online by using their CAC. Military retirees may verify their identity online using their Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) Logon. For those unable to verify their identity online, you will instantly receive a Basic Account. A Basic eBenefits Account lets you customize the site and access information you enter into eBenefits yourself; however, you cannot see your personal information in VA or DoD systems. However, there are other options available to you. Veterans in receipt of VA benefits via direct deposit may have their identity verified by calling 1.800.827.1000 and selecting option 7. Others may need to visit a VA Regional Office or TriCare Service Center to have their identities verified in person.

eBenefits Features if you are a Veteran: • Apply for Veterans benefits online • Check on your compensation or pension

claims status • Upload documents to support your

compensation or pension claim • Check Post-9/11 GI Bill enrollment status

OKTOBERFEST!

Photos by Art McQueen

Oktoberfest in September?

Yes, Oktoberfest actually starts in September and goes to the first Sunday in October. The Oktoberfest in Munich is the largest and most celebrated folk festival in the world.

This year’s festivities in Munich started on September 20 with the tapping of the first beer keg. Although we did not have a keg of beer to tap, everyone did get to enjoy a cold beer at our festivities on September 19, courtesy of Eagle Brand Sales.

The opening remarks were given by the new Garrison Manager, Mr. Andy Bird, who surprised us all by doing so in German. He introduced Maj Gen Nowland, who officially opened the festivities and kicked off the CFC campaign, noting how important it is to give back even in tough times.

The Garrison MWR team brought a little bit of Munich to Miami for this quarter’s workforce appreciation event. They beautifully

transformed the basketball courts into a traditional Munich beer tent.

Everyone was treated to a nice cold beer and a traditional Oktoberfest meal of grilled bratwurst. schweinsbraten (roasted pork,) brotchen (roll,) homemade sauerkraut, German style potato salad and apple or pumpkin pie. The delicious meal was prepared and served by Great Chefs of America. To really make it authentic, MWR brought in a traditional oom-pah band playing

all the favorite Oktoberfest songs. The very entertaining band members came dressed in lederhosen and really set the mood.

We might not have crammed in 10,000 people like some of the beer tents in Munich, but we had well over 1,000 folks attend the fun-filled event. This was our second Oktoberfest, and so far, it has been the most popular theme of all.

As always, we thank our great sponsors that helped put on this wonderful event and others. Tremendous thanks goes to Eagle Brand Sales, Open Health Clinical Group, Veterans4You, and USAA. We could not do it without them.

We hope everyone who attended had a great time and we look forward to the next event and seeing every one there.

A special thanks to the Family and MWR team that put forth such great effort in making this and all MWR events happen. They may be a small team but they surely are a powerful one that gets the job done each and every time.

School Age Center Program

The Child Development Center (CDC) provides services to school-aged students in kindergarten to 5th grade through a before and after school program. The program offers a positive environment where children can develop their cognitive skills while having fun with different clubs and Power Hour. Club-based programs in four service areas are provided: Sports & Fitness, Fine Arts, Citizenship & Leadership, Science, and Leisure & Recreation.

Academic Power Hour is provided throughout the school year. Enrollees from Miami-Dade County Public Schools and Broward County Public Schools, as well as those who attend Charter Schools receive support from subject matter experts through homework assistance. While this activity is voluntary, children take advantage of this opportunity to expand what is learned at school and parents are able to fully enjoy quality time at home because homework is done.

Transportation is provided at no extra cost to the parents. The program currently provides services to and from the following schools: Eugenia B. Thomas, John I. Smith, Dr. Rolando Espinosa, and Renaissance. Children must be registered with Child, Youth and School Services.

For more information, please contact the Child Development Center at 305.437.1281 or 1283.

Interstate Compact Agreement

During the recent Spouse Symposium, attendees asked about the Interstate Compact Agreement. The link below provides insight on the Agreement established on behalf of our military children as they transition to multiple schools during the school year. The Zip Code Groups at USSOUTHCOM are organized by place of residence and offer an opportunity to meet new friends. The groups also provide a channel for spouses to get information about what happens at the command and in the surrounding civilian communities. The Zip Code Groups are a means of social interaction and camaraderie for spouses similar to that provided by the Officers and Enlisted Spouses Groups located on traditional military bases. The Zip Code Groups are organized in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. WHO’S WHO

Electronic Sponsorship Application and Training

Sponsorship is key to a military Family’s successful move. It helps create unit cohesion and a smoother transition to a new installation and community. Recognizing the importance of successful sponsorship, the DoD, in conjunction with the military services, created the Electronic Sponsorship Application and Training application to bring standardized sponsorship training to all appointed unit sponsors regardless of service branch. Service members can access the eSAT website using their common access card or CAC. The application is secure and will provide an official certificate for your unit records.

The Electronic Sponsorship Application and Training (www.militaryhomefront.dod.mil/) is designed to support military service members who have been assigned the responsibility of sponsorship to better serve newcomers who have received permanent change of station orders. Key features include the following:• An online training course for sponsors with links to all DoD and service branch websites that support the PCS process; • A downloadable checklist of the sponsor’s duties and a printable certificate of completion for his or her records; • A downloadable needs assessment the sponsor uses to create customized welcome packages with service-specific links, information and advanced applications for housing and child care.

The online training module and downloadable tools include a sample initial e-mail message and branch-specific welcome letters tailored to family status.

All service members appointed as sponsors are eligible for eSAT and may use their CAC to log in to the eSAT website.
