The results are in. This year’s High Holy Days had a signifi cant impact on our community; the impact can be measured by quantifi able post-holiday activity resulting from the experience. There have been many reports of measurable activity since the holidays. Here are three.
The fi rst report comes from the medical fi eld. Our Yom Kippur discussion featured three courageous cancer survivors who told their stories and shared the wisdom of their experience. It was a deep, raw, emotional community conversation. We learned about the power of community, the healing aspects of prayer, and the signifi cance of early detection. One of our goals was to impress upon our community the need for routine examinations. Since the High Holy Days, doctors have shared with me that Brith Shalomers have made appointments long delayed, citing the Yom Kippur afternoon discussion as their impetus.
The second report comes from the fi eld of psychology. On Yom Kippur day, my sermon encouraged focus on individual responsibility and empowerment. The framework was an affi rmation, “God loves me; the world needs me; so I will walk my Jewish journey.” A therapist who works with addicts and convicts reported to me that she is using the affi rmation in her work. Her clients are visibly moved when they recite the mantra, confronting their issues of loneliness and self-worth.
The third report is my own. Every Sunday morning, I lead a prayer service for the religious school students in kindergartener through second grade. It is one of the highlights of my week. We sing Jewish prayers, discuss upcoming holidays, and exercise our souls. One of the goals is to provide a foundation for the children to build a relationship with God through prayer. We used the Yom Kippur mantra last week right before the Sh’ma, and it worked beautifully. The chapel space was transformed with a sense of awe. One of the children asked the perfect question, which sealed the experience: “But Rabbi, doesn’t God love everyone?” “Yes,” I said, “God loves everyone. And God loves you, too.” We prefer to think of our God in the abstract. It’s easier, less demanding, less invasive, less risky, and less confusing. This year, join me in thinking about our God who loves you. It’s a little more diffi cult, a little more demanding, a little more intense, and a little more real.
If you have not yet acted on inspiration from the High Holy Days, please do so, because “the world needs you.” You can fi nd the text of the High Holy Day sermons at http://www.brithshalom.org/rabbi/

As a chazzan invested by the Jewish Theological Seminary, I spent fi ve years at the seminary and was also fortunate enough to have had a lot of cantorial and administrative training and experience during my undergraduate years and prior to my arrival at Brith Shalom. Throughout all of it, one of the things that I am most grateful for is being able to bring happiness and comfort to others through the many life cycle events and special moments that I have been privileged to take part in. Being a member of the clergy allows me to experience the most meaningful times in others’ lives. As a cantor, I can use my musical abilities to help provide spirituality, comfort, and joy for others during these times and more.
Of course, there are many responsibilities to being a cantor, and they vary depending on the type of synagogue and congregation that a cantor serves. At Brith Shalom, my job responsibilities include being a clergy, pastor, musician, and educator. I spend a lot of time teaching classes, conducting private tutoring, reaching out to others seeking comfort and company, and creating, organizing, and running many programs and activities to enhance Jewish life in our synagogue and community.
As you know, one of my favorite ways to connect with others is through music. In one of my attempts to continue to enhance the spirituality of our congregation, I am excited to announce that we are enlarging our Friday Night Ruach services with more singers and musicians! This season we will have a Friday Night Ruach Singers Ensemble in addition to more teen musicians recruited from our FNR teen band elective for Mosad Shalom. I am also excited about the start of a teen Torah chanting league, which also includes a rewards system with rules similar to those of Fantasy sports. I will also continue to teach the 6th grade Haftarah classes and tefi llot to some of the religious school on a weekly basis. Our next B’nei Mitzvah class begins the annual line-up of workshops and socials at the end of October. And in November I will again be teaching adult education classes for those interested in learning how to chant Torah, and we will begin the second series of Davening Like a Pro. There will also be several Jewish song sessions, open to everyone interested, after Saturday morning services throughout the year (dates to be announced). These are just some of the exciting upcoming events to look forward to.
Wishing everyone a wonderful new year,
Cantor Lance Rhodes

Thank you!to all of our fabulous CBS volunteers - past and present! We are
constantly impressed by the spirit, dedication, and kindness of our volunteers, who are always just a phone call or email away. We could not do the work we do, or even begin to strive towards new ideas, programs,
and growth in our community, without each and every one of you. Whether you lend a hand during High Holy Days, participate in Mitzvah Day, serve on the Chesed Committee, proofread our publications, pass
out snacks to religious school students, donate a few hours of your time in the offi ce during busy periods, or even bring the offi ce staff treats, you are more help than you know. It is only through your support that our
synagogue can move forward, one mitzvah at a time.
Sincerely,
CBS Offi ce Staff

Prepare yourselves for a powerful experience in Jewish prayer. Our Sages teach that when a group of people prays together, God’s presence (the Shekhinah) dwells among them. The essence of the Friday Night Ruach service is intense congregational participation. This service is part of a new wave in Jewish prayer that began in New York, Los Angeles, and Jerusalem, where congregations like B’nai Jeshurun, Kehillat Shira Hadasha, the Library Minyan, and Yakar are tapping into the contemporary need to participate in song. We at Brith Shalom are seeking the spiritual power of a sanctuary fi lled with voices singing and swaying in unison! We need your voice. Come sing and feel God’s intimate presence, the Shekhinah. In order to help the congregation raise their voices in song, we set traditional liturgy to Chasidic and contemporary melodies accompanied by Shabbat-appropriate instrumentation. We also provide transliterations and sheet music and, on request, can distribute the melodies on CD. After a joyous, uplifting service, people look forward to meeting in the social hall for a delicious light supper. We shake hands, schmooze, and enjoy each other’s company. When we leave, it's with a smile and a feeling of being invigorated as we look forward to coming together once again for the next Friday Night Ruach.
Join us for an engaging musical service with instrumental accompaniment followed by a delicious dinner with your CBS family. All ages welcome!

The Path of the Refugee
The Reh family began its long journey to safety more than 20 years ago, leaving their native Burma (Myanmar) out of fear of torture and forced labor perpetrated by the government. They are among hundreds of thousands of ethnic Karenni people who have fl ed fi ghting and persecution in their country, fi nding relative safety in refugee camps in Thailand. Now their journey has brought them to a safe haven—to Houston, where they strive to learn a new language, adjust to an entirely foreign culture, and become self-suffi cient and contributing members of the community that is now their home.Join us as we hear the stories of new Houstonians from all over theworld and explore the Jewish values related to the issue of refugees.
Wednesday, December 5, 7:15 pm
In conjunction with the program and Mitzvah Day, Brith Shalom is holding a drive to collect household goods and furnishings for a refugee family newly settled here by Interfaith Ministries. Please see the list of needed items and donation instructions at www.brithshalom.org/pathoftherefugeeThis program is sponsored jointly by the Diversity Outreach, Adult Education, and Social Action Committees and Mosad Shalom. It is part of Brith Shalom’s commitment to the ADL’s Community of Respect initiative.

Jewish Prayer: A Challenge to Each of Uswith Cantor Mark Levine
Spirituality is the buzzword of the day, but what if prayer’s purpose hashigher significance than spiritual fulfillment? Abraham Joshua Heschel wrote:
We will explore the concept that prayer’s intent is to confront uscognitively. By struggling with our beliefs, we hope to emerge as betterhuman beings. With the Shabbat evening service as our guide, we will tackleissues addressed by the liturgy such as:
This is an on-going course, and it will benefit you most to attend all sessions;however, everyone is invited to attend individual sessions.

The true motivation for prayer is not, as it has been said, the sense of being at home in the universe, but rather,
the sense of NOT being at home in the universe.

The Texas Jewish Experience
I. Jewish Life During Pre-Statehood
In the early 1500s when the first conquistadors arrived in Nueva España, a Jew was usually found among their staff. These non-Catholics were allowed in the New World to serve the recording needsmandated by the Crown and the Church. Today their descendants are labeled crypto Jews, and their family stories are fascinating to modern scholars. This session will deal with the reality that the first Jews came to what is now Texas some two centuries before Jews arrived in New Amsterdam.
II. Jewish Life in Texas
It’s fair to suggest that from the 1500s until the 1970s, many considered Texas a wilderness. And yet the Jews who arrived throughout the centuries sought to maintain Judaism in some form, even in Cisco. Jews were involved in the warp and woof of the building of Texas, even as they faced the KKK anduniversity restrictions. Despite national anti-Semitic feelings in the 1930s, Hebrew was taught at UT. This session will discuss who we were and who we are; and, if we’re brave, who we’ll be as Jews in the “empire state of Texas.”
lII. Interesting Texas Jews
Texas has been the home of some very interesting individuals who have had more than national impact. Michael Seeligson was mayor of Galveston for 120 years before Abe Beame in New York. The first Hilton Hotel was in Cisco. Henry Cohen served his congregation 62 years and helped to create the state parole board. Leo N. Levi, later the national president of B’nai B’rith, persuaded Theodore Roosevelt to protest the Kishinev pogroms in 1903 in Russia. Other outstanding Texas Jews include Sam Dreben, Dr. Grace Jameson, Albert Lasker, Adrian Levy Sr., Stanley Marcus, and even Kinky Friedman. We’ll consider some of the great and the near-great Jews of Texas.

From the Sisterhood Presidents
September-October: Sisterhood’s annual membership event, entitled “Body & Soul – Preparing for the New Year,” was held Monday, September 10, at the home of Miriam Wiener. Featured speakers were Chaplain Hope Lipnick, MA, LPC, CHTP, Director of Jewish Chaplaincy, Jewish Family Service, and Denominational Coordinator, MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Texas Medical Center, and fashion experts from the French Cuff Boutique (Bellaire location), who put on a fashion show featuring Sisterhood models. Thank you to Susan Marbin, Sisterhood Membership VP, and Belinda Denn, Membership Chair, the coordinators of this event, which was attended by more than 50 women.
October was a fun-fi lled month for Sisterhood. First was our Sisterhood on the Go! small group activity: about 16 women attended Main Street Theater’s matinee performance of Girls Only: The Secret Comedy of Women on Sunday, October 14. Everyone loved the “Saturday Night Live”-style
humor during this highly regarded play, which included improvisation and audience participation.
Sisterhood’s fall program took place Monday, October 15, hosted by Susan Farb Morris. The event featured Carol Simon with the program “Women in Second Adulthood, What’s Next?” Ms. Simon, who heads Carol Simon Transitions, incorporated several exercises that helped us look at our present and future selves to move us forward with our dreams. She helped us identify our strengths, values, and life purposes.
Sisterhood’s programming chair this year is Etna Goldsmith. Please contact her with any program ideas you have for 2012-13.
November Book and Arts Fair Speaker Sisterhood’s annual ERJCC author sponsorship was fun and informative; we heard a lecture by Francesca Segal, (daughter of Love Story’s Erich Segal), author of The Innocents, November 1, during the ERJCC Book and Arts Fair. The Sisterhood board meeting took place immediately after the speech.
Gift Shop Chanukah Bazaar Is Back! Please support CBS Sisterhood by attending the Gift Shop’s Chanukah Bazaar on November 18, 9:00 am-4:00 pm. There will be a large variety of vendors, wonderful Chanukah/holiday items for sale, and more! If you are interested in selling items as a vendor, please contact Gift Shop Manager Barbie Talisman, at 713-922-9922. Concurrent with the Chanukah Bazaar will be an exciting Sisterhood Mah Jongg Tournament from 1:00-4:00 pm. Register by submitting a $24 check to CBS Sisterhood.

Sisterhood Ways & Means
Our High Holy Day fundraisers were successful! They included the sale of honey (we sold 299 jars, and people loved receiving this sweet gift), donations for bimah fl owers, and the auction of parking spaces.
We are working on the new Sisterhood Cookbook, and we expect to publish it next year. Many members have sent in delicious recipes, but we still have room for more (other than desserts, chicken, or Pesach recipes).
The cookbook is our major fundraiser this year, and the proceeds will help pay for Sisterhood’s contribution
to Shabbat lunches for the congregation (for those Shabbatot where there is no simchah). There are opportunities for business advertising in the cookbook, or you can honor or memorialize a loved one in our dedication pages or include a greeting to Sisterhood. Gold, Silver, and Bronze sponsorships are available. For donations of $360, $180, and $90, respectively. Or, you may prefer to advertise your business in our cookbook, where your ad will be seen by hungry CBS members for many years to come! Advertising rates are $75 for a full page, $50 for a half page, or $25 for a quarter page. Enter the cookbook title contest and win a free cookbook (as well as a special mention) if the cookbook committee picks your entry. We are also offering a free cookbook for the most advance sales!
If you’d like to help with this great project, please contact Doreen Lerner at [email protected].
SUPPORT JTSTorah Fund Pin for 5773
(2012-2013)
Uri, Uri: Awake - Greet the New Dawn!
This year’s Torah Fund theme is taken from the inspirational experience of Devorah, a prophet and judge in Israel, who was roused from her peaceful rest under a palm tree to lead her people’s troops into battle with the words, “Arise, arise, Devorah; arise and join in the chant” (Judges 5:12). Being roused to action is often just the prelude to awakening others, whether via the shofar (as seen growing out of the letter ‘ayin in the 5773 Torah Fund pin), or by using our voices and actions to focus attention to the critical needs of our families, our Jewish community, and the Conservative movement. The image of dawn invokes an awareness of the challenges before us as well as our need to be alert to address them.
Your donation to CBS Sisterhood’s Torah Fund campaign helps meet these challenges by supporting the Jewish Theological Seminary, the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies, and the Seminario Rabinico
Latinoamericano, which train our Conservative rabbis, cantors, and educators. For details on the various donation and pin levels, contact Karen Lukin (713) 526-7095 (evenings) or (713) 296-2528 (daytime).
Friendships are made here! Your Men’s Club has an active calendar aimed at developing programs for you! These programs will enrich the quality of Jewish life in your home and our community. Your participation will enhance your knowledge and appreciation of our Jewish heritage and traditions. More important, you will make lasting friendships and make a difference in our synagogue. Dues are only $36 per year! For more info or to join, contact:David Marbin, President (770) 316-4520
