ADULT LEADERS & PARENTS ASSOCIATION (ALPA)
Learn more and become more involved in 4-H! Well, I have the organization for you.
It’s the Adult Leaders & Parents Association (ALPA) of Waller County. The purpose of
ALPA is to develop and support volunteer leaders to serve the needs of 4-H mem-
bers. The next ALPA meeting is scheduled for November 21, 2011 at the Ex-
tension Office beginning at 7:00 pm. I’d like to challenge EVERY 4-H par-
ent to attend this meeting. This is a meeting where 4-H BBQ will be dis-
cussed and planned as well as county 4-H scholarships for the current year.
The 4-H Council also meets at the same time as the APLA group meets so there’s
something for everyone!
4-H Food & Nutrition Project Area
Food and Nutrition Extravaganza, (Workshop) is scheduled for November 17th registration is from 6-6:15 with the workshop to begin promptly afterward. The
location is the Extension Office, and topics will include:
Project goal setting
Cooking with math
Nutrition Education through games
MyPlate content game and food group review
The Waller County 4-H Food Show will be held on Thursday, January 19,
2012 at the First United Methodist Church of Hempstead. Registration is from 5:45 - 6:15 pm. There is a ―County Packet‖ of information that will be sent out via email
with reporting deadlines. Category division RSVP will be December 22nd for award ordering. If you would like a hard copy, you can obtain one at the Waller County Ex-tension Office in Hempstead. We hope to have MANY kids participate in the Food
Show. Remember, Clover Kids are more than welcome to participate in this event as well!
Food Challenge will be hosted at the 2012 San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo on February 18th. This is a competition for individuals only, and it is open to the senior age group only. Entry is $25 and the Deadline for entry is November 15th
by noon. Contact Lynna Wright for entry, information, and study materials.

4-H AMBASSADORS SAND ART BROWNIES AVAILABLE
The Waller County 4-H Ambassadors are now selling jars of their delicious ―Sand Art‖
Brownie Mix. The price is just $8 per jar. These make delightful gifts; Christmas, Ap-
preciation, House-Warming. Brownie Mix will be on sale until early December. The
proceeds from the sale of the Brownie Mix Jars goes towards the 4-H Ambassadors
Holiday Service Project, purchasing Christmas gifts for those in our county that are
less financially able.

2011 4-H PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT
The 4-H Photography Project is one of the fastest growing projects in the State and is
also growing in Waller County. Cooperative Extension Agent, Te’Anna Reed has
scheduled a workshop November 16, 2011 starting at 6:00 p.m. at the Waller
County Extension Office for 4-H youth interested in participating in the 2012 4-H Pho-
tography Project Area.
Members can enter photos in the many different categories offered in county, district,
or state contests. Some categories are animals, plant or flora, and natural land-
scapes. Photos can be either in color or black and white, and can be taken with any
kind of camera.

CONSUMER DECISION MAKING PRACTICE
Consumer decision making is the competition most widely associated with the con-
sumer education project area. There will be a sign-up for the San Antonio Contest. If
you are interested (on any level) in participating in this team event, Mrs. Lynna will be
hosting a practice on the following dates at 5:00.

2011-2012 RECORD BOOKS
Due to targeted feedback, Texas 4-H is streamlining the State’s 4-H Record Book
keeping process. In this digital age, it may come as no surprise to you that the new
system is digital based. Access at WWW.4HREPORTS.COM. Whether you are dis-
couraged by the thought of online recordkeeping or think that it is far past due, pre-
pare yourselves as online recordkeeping is the expectation for youth in 2011-2012!
The new system is currently available. Create login information to start navigat-
ing and exploring the new system
3 types of recordkeeping according to age classification; Junior, Intermediate
and Senior
Forms are to be completed in online system, but may be downloaded from
Texas 4-H Website and typed. Online storage is encouraged.
Record Books will still be printed and submitted in hardcopy.

Seniors will complete career exploration information

SOUTHERN CLASSIC LIVESTOCK SHOW
Friday – Sunday, December 9-11, 2011

The Southern Classic Beef, Lamb, Goat and Swine Clinic and Prospect Show is de-
signed to provide an educational opportunity for 4-H and FFA families needing experi-
ence in the show ring. The weekend includes educational programs mixed with com-
petitive experiences designed to prepare youth for their ultimate experience, ―The
County Youth Livestock Show‖. The Southern Classic is open to all 4-H and FFA fami-
lies.
Entry/Registration :
Early Bird Registration – Prior to December
2, 2011
$15 – person (adults and youth)
$60 – for the whole family
Registration after December 2, 2011
$20 – person (adults and youth)
$80 – for the whole family
4-H Members and Parents: Enter through 4-H Connect using your 4-H enrollment account. The southern classic event is available for selection. Remember parents need to register as well
Family Registration both 4-H and FFA: enter online using 4-H Connect. No 4-H
Membership Required. You will set up a ―new profile‖ on the site and the ―role‖ you will select is: ‖Southern Classic‖. This will allow you to register at the family rate.
Register on Site: Do nothing online, but the fee is $5 extra per person.

animal. Just fees for each per-
son/family coming to the event.
Who? Senior age 4-H members, 13-19 and Adult sponsors

How? Register on 4-H Center website between Nov 1 and Dec 30
Cost? Registration includes 2 nights lodging, 4 meals, snacks and all program sup-
plies. Waller County ALPA covers 60% of registration costs. As there are eight am-
bassadors, attendance mandatory, there are two additional spots open for other sen-
ior 4-H members. The cost to campers is $42. This registration fee is due into the of-

Teen Retreat
January 6-8, 2012
Texas 4-H Conference Center
Teen Retreat at the Texas 4-H Conference Center provides a state
level leadership experience for 4-H youth, 13-19
Teen Retreat is designed to allow teens to explore new or revised
project area curricula resources so they might aid implementation in their home counties
Featured projects will be Outdoor Challenge, Science Engineering Tech-
nology (SET), College Preparedness, & Service Learning
Join other teen 4-H members across the State and learn how to lead an
Outdoor Challenge program in your county!

WALLER COUNTY TEAM NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
Congratulations to the Waller County 4-H Meat Judging team who was able to capital-
ize on all of their hard work and practice by winning the 2011 National 4-H Meat judg-
ing Contest. Pictured left to right are Coach Dennison, Ryan King, Miranda Jones,
Melvin Oestrich, and Connor King. As you can see, it was a well earned victory with
the team placing first in six of seven divisions; pork judging, retail cut judging, beef
judging, oral reasons, overall class placing, and high team.
Meat Judging Practice There is a meat judging practice scheduled for November 21st.
There will be a practice of current judgers at 2:00. There will be an
orientation for new judgers from 3:00 to 4:00. Hope to see
many smiling faces in the back room of the Extension Office.

The date for District 9 Round Up will be May 4th and 5th. District competi-
tions are held on this date, and there is word of a BBQ competition and
street dance to be held. The event will be held at the Lonestar Convention
Center in Conroe. Watch as detail emerge on the District 9 4-H Website.
