CHELSEA KITTA

Kristin is a Third Year Journalism Major with a Concentration in Public Relations. Sheis currently working towards an Equine Science minor. This is Kristin’s rst year inPRSSA. Her hobbies include horseback riding, photography, and sailing.

1. What agency did you intern for? I interned for Integrated MarketingWorks in Orange County last summer. They have 6-8 clients for whom they do advertising, PR, marketing, mediarelations, media buying, etc. according to each client's needs.

2. What was your favorite and least favorite part of theinternship? My favorite part of being an intern at IMW was the ability to dip into somany different aspects of the communications industry. I did everythingfrom trafficking and proofing advertisements to writing press releases and

just about everything in between. Although making coffee wasn't typicallythe highlight of my day, my least favorite part was actually just the downtime. Because IMW is a smallagency, everyone was pretty on top of their jobs and there were times when I just had to hang out.

3. What did you learn from the experience? That downtime taught me to be proactive about helping out. I would literally go from office to officeoffering to help, and would usually get some fun things to work on. I was willing to do-and learn-absolutely anything, and my coworkers really appreciated that. At first they were all a bit wary of havingan intern, but by the end of the summer, I was surrounded by a group of incredible people that I know Icould call up tomorrow for a reference.

4. Any advice to offer members on obtaining internships?Don't be afraid to ask for an internship! If you are really excited about a certain company but they don'thave an internship position, be willing to meet with someone and ask. You may not get paid, but theexperience will be invaluable and your employer (and future employers) will take note of your eagerness.

If you do get the internship, make sure you hold up your end of the deal. Internships also are some of the first opportunities we get to create a network, so make a good impression - this will pave the way for future internships and jobs.

5. Any advice on how to take take advantage of your internship opportunities?Go with the flow. Some days, I was setting up the conference room and managing business lunches, and other days I was creating monstrous advertising budgets or schedules. Any skill you can pick up willhelp you later on, so don't pigeonhole yourself into certain tasks, and don't just stick to what you know.Internships are all about learning, and I actually spent more time doing non-PR work because it wasdifferent and I had the opportunity to pick up skills I wouldn't be able to at Cal Poly.

CHELSEA KITTA

Hello PRSSA! My name is Kelsey Magnusen and I am a 2011 graduate of Cal Poly’sjournalism department and a three-year alumni of PRSSA. I am currently a SeniorAccount Coordinator at Paolucci Communication Arts, an advertising, design, interactiveand public relations agency in Palos Verdes Estates, CA.

My post-grad life has been a whirlwind. Immediately after graduation, I moved home tothe LA area and interned for Burson-Marsteller Los Angeles in the Brand Marketingpractice; within a few months I was hired as a Client Staff Assistant. After fourmonths, I realized I needed achange. I longed for a creativemore holistic environment, one

where I could really develop my creative thinking andexpand my skill set. I then found my place as a PRaccount executive at PCA, a talented and creativeagency where I could have more responsibility and morefun.

PRSSA truly jump started my career. I joined theexecutive board as a sophomore and was president2008-2010. PRSSA taught me the importance ofgenuinely investing in your professional development. Our guest speakers and workshops inspired me to learn more about the industry, and their stories of successpushed me to write my own.

You truly have to start somewhere, and SLO/Cal Poly is the perfect place to begin. PRSSA preaches the

importance of internships, work experience and professional development. You don’t have to have that“sparkling” internship on your resume. In my experience, the well-rounded applicant gets hired. Don’t forgetabout the amazing potential that is hidden within SLO county—the experience you’ll get at Barnett Cox &Associates, On the Horizon Communications, or Verdin Marketing, is invaluable. Take advantage of these amazinginternship and job opportunities. PR hiring managers value this experience the most!
