Dear Brothers & Sisters,Kathy and I hope all members

and their families had a great Thanksgiving.

I trust all enjoyed the different events on our Italian Heritage Month Calendar. There was something for everyone. I would like to congratulate the hard working Italian Heritage Com-mittee headed by Dr. Stephen Maio, Mr. Lino Rullo and Kevin Caira, for an outstanding job. Kathy and I attended and en-joyed many of the events.

After a few date changes we fi nally held our annual Bocce Tournament at the Watertown Lodge who put out a great meal for all the participants. Believe it or not we had the same Men’s team and Ladies team win again, Watertown Men’s team and the Ladies from the Natick Lodge. The competition this year was really tough.

The great pride we Italians have in our heritage was evident at the Columbus Day Parade held in the North End of Bos-ton. Our Son’s of Italy Drum and Bugle Band from Haverhill lead our division, along with over 50 antique cars, floats, and members from different

lodges who marched proudly. A special thanks to Brother John Christoforo and Brother John Silva, Jr., who worked tirelessly on this event. You really made us proud Brothers.

Again the Worcester Lodge put on a great Columbus Day Dinner Dance, our congratula-tions goes out to the Man of the Year Michael Sacco, Kathy and I would like to thank the Commit-tee for inviting us to this great function.

Thanks to the Belmont Ladies Maria Montessori Lodge and the Saugus Figli D’Italia Lodge and Francesco DeSanctis Natick Lodge for inviting Kathy and me to their Lodges for a great din-ner, show and costume party.

There are some lodges that are recruiting new members, which will help keep this or-ganization viable. The Greater Boston Renaissance Lodge installed twenty-fi ve new mem-bers, and the Massimo d’Azegloi of Braintree installed fifteen new members in October. What a great start to reach our goal of 10,000 members by 2011.

On Sunday, November 8th at the Don Orione Shrine, we had about 125 people celebrate

Mass with Fr. Gregory Macu-rio. Thanks to our Chair La-dies Sister Theresa Farina and Sister Carol Rossi, and all the members who participated and enjoyed the great breakfast.

Thanks to our Sports Chair-man Brother Steve DeAngelis and his committee for putting on a Cribbage Tournament, (won by Brother Fran Cedrone), with a super meal at the Newton Lodge. Next year we hope to have a lot more players.

Our annual Purple Aster Ball at Spinnelli’s in Lynnfi eld, was held on Saturday, November 21st, the committee chaired by Sister Denise Furnari and Sister Margaret Campbell put together a night that will not soon be forgotten. The food was fan-tastic and the music was even better. Thanks to Sister Denise and Sister Margaret, and to the 152 members who shared the night with us. Already looking forward to next years.

Kathy and I would like to wish all of our Brothers and Sisters a very Merry and Holy Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. GOD Bless you all, and GOD Bless the Order Sons of Italy.

Cari Fratelli e Sorelle.

organizzazione a fiorire.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,We are all aware of our declining statewide member-

ship and the unfortunate demise of some of our Filial Lodges, which has been happening over the years. One way of securing the future of your lodge is by the institution of a Junior Lodge. The Junior Division Commission is ready to assist you in this endeavor.

The Junior Division was established with the pur-pose of educating our youth in our Italian culture, and teaching them the ideals and principles of the Order. While in the Junior Lodge, a child is able to bolster their self-esteem by being able to interact with other children in their own peer group. The most important aspect of a child’s stay in a Junior Lodge is that they will be properly instructed to become a leader of their respective Senior Lodge in the near future.

At the Junior Lodge, all children between the ages of 10 and 18 are welcomed to join with non-Italian children joining as social members. With the guidance of at least one adult supervisor and 25 children, your lodge can establish a Junior Lodge.

The Junior Division Commissioners and I would welcome the opportunity to visit your lodge and talk about this further. We also extend an invitation to you to come join us on the Commission. You may contact me at 978-658-5598 or drop me an email at [email protected]

Remember Brothers and Sisters, for every child that joins a Junior Lodge, there is the potential of that child’s mother and father joining your Senior Lodge.

Fraternally yours,Charlie DeStefano

Jr. Division President

Message from the ...

JUNIOR DIVISION

Christmas evokes so much nostalgia and memories. We recall the image of Christmas past — the smells, the sounds, the wonder of children, re-membrances of home com-ings with family and friends. There’s an air of excitement!

At the center of all this ex-citement is a child. The Child of Bethlehem asleep in a man-ger. The image is beautiful and captures our hearts. We are reminded that God has come among us and has humbled himself and taken upon himself human limitations.

We are transformed by hope, for the child born to us brings us the realization that God has reached out to us. This Child is the bridge between our broken world and the perfection of God. It is a holy and precious moment. A moment that unites us with Christmas all over the world and unites us with God.

Now we can lay aside our hurts, animosities and human preoc-cupations and open our hearts wide to a new vision of what life can be by allowing God’s message of hope and His transforming love to take hold in and reshape us.

It is my hope and prayer that your hearts will be fi lled with the great love of our Lord, Jesus Christ and it will spill over to every-one you meet. May God repay your good will by blessing you at Christmas and in the New Year.

Standing, Left to Right: Denise Furnari, Louis Floriani, Theresa Farina, Carmelita Bello, OSIA State President James DiStefano, Tony Sestito, Cathy Bourassa, Ron Hill, Marie Jackson. Kneeling, Left to Right: Franco Battista and Richard Sacca.

The First Scripture Reading was from the Book of Kings and the Lector was State 1st Vice President Carmelita Bello. The Respon-sorial Psalm was read by Lector, State 2nd Vice President Antonio Sestito, the Second Reading was from Hebrews and the Lector was State Recording Secretary Ron Hill. The Offertory Proces-sion included James and Kathy DiStefano and Walter and Rita Maletta-Robak.

Fr. Gregory Mercurio’s homily was from the Holy Gospel, Book of Mark in which our Lord calls his disciples to himself and says to them, “Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.”

State President James DiStefano thanked all who attended and invited the congregation to partake of the collation presented by Famolare’s Catering. He thanked Mary Ann Bello and Donna Giuliani for the music with a special thanks to the chairpersons of this yearly Memorial Mass, State Trustees Theresa Farina and Carol Rossi.

Those who attended shared friendly conversation and memories in a familiar setting with their friends, while enjoying the food provided by Famalore Catering, thus bringing to an end the 20th Annual Memorial Mass Celebration.

State Chaplain Reverend Gregory J. Mercurio led us in prayer and gave a very stirring homily.

Purple Aster (Continued from Page 1 )

(Continued on Page 8)

On Saturday November 21, 2009 the Purple Aster Ball was once again held at Spinelli’s Function Facility in Lynnfi eld, Massachusetts. The evening began at 6:30 p.m. with a cocktail reception followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m. The formal photographs were taken at 6:00 p.m. which left the eve-ning free for dancing to the great music of the Frank Zarba Band.

Although the economic times have taken a toll on the atten-dance to this yearly event, this was an evening of friendship and cordiality. Members and guests came from the western part of the state and New Hamp-shire. Arrangements were made available for those who wished to stay overnight at the Spring-Hill Suites in Peabody.

The opening of the Ball began with the introduction of the Chairmen of Permanent Com-missions, Benefit Insurance Commission, Grand Council, National Officers, and State President James DiStefano and First Lady Kathy DiStefano. As each individual was introduced with their escort they came into the center of the banquet hall and were then ushered to their table. Our Master of Ceremo-nies for the evening was Paul Guida, our Executive Director, who always does a fantastic presentation.

The co-chairs of this event were our two State Trustees Margaret Campbell and Denise Furnari, and they are to be com-mended for presenting such an enjoyable evening. They had a great committee to work with and it was evident throughout the evening of the time they had

all spent in making this Ball so special.

Spinelli’s served a most deli-cious dinner consisting of var-ied Hors D’Oeuvres, Minestrone Soup, Homemade Gemelli, Cae-sar Salad, Roast Prime Rib of Beef, Potatoes au Gratin, Honey Glazed Carrots and Jubilee Ice Cream Roll. Red and white wine was also available at all the tables.

After dinner there was a very short speech from our State President James DiStefano thanking all who came and making this an enjoyable eve-ning.

Throughout the evening the Frank Zarba Band played great dancing music and there were also many vocal renditions, one in particular that a Sons of Italy function could not be possible without. And that was, State Trustee Franco Battista singing Peppino the Italian Mouse. And, one could not forget the special aria sung by a member of the Frank Zarba Band that was the signature aria of the great Pavarotti, Nesune Dorme.

Our National Recording Secre-tary Rita Maletta-Robak is to be commended for the marvelous table of gifts and baskets and the manner in which this was so ably handled and displayed. Many hands contributed to this work and again although I repeat myself it was a great effort by Sister Rita Maletta-Robak and the hard working committee.

As the evening drew to a close, one could observe the parting greetings of many of the guests. It was a special evening and we hope that next year the num-bers attending will be doubled.

the Parade with the City of Bos-ton Parade offi cials to fi nalize details. They also attended the reception on the Friday evening prior to the Parade. They both felt that this close contact with the City made a big difference.

The Order Sons of Italy lineup was handled differently this year. There were fi fty-two an-tique cars which led the Sons of Italy Division, thus alleviating the overheating of the vehicles as in previous years. The lead vehicle carried the banner of the Order Sons of Italy. There was also a Sons of Italy lion in a convertible with the Grand Lodge banner. (Thanks to John Silva’s sister-in-law). The Hav-erhill Drum & Bugle Corps once again joined the march-ers. Somehow, it was noted that Mickey Mouse was not in Disney World but in our Parade. (Thank you Maura DiStefano, wife of State Treasurer Michael DiStefano).

After the parade a collation was served at the St. John’s School and J. Pace provided the food which was paid for by do-nations from the Renaissance Lodge and Florence Ferullo Kane. A donation was made to St. John’s School by the Grand Lodge.

It was noted that this year the contingent from the Order Sons of Italy was a well-orga-nized and well-run Division. Of course we have to thank the two co-chairs Brother Christoforo and Silva for their close contact with city offi cials and the many details that are necessary for an event of this sort. These two gentlemen did such a fantastic job that they have been reap-pointed as co-chairs for the 2010 Columbus Day Parade which will be held in East Bos-ton. They are determined to again present a well run Parade with attendance by the Filial Lodges to be 100%.

It was also noted that partici-pation was very low. We should all make the effort to partici-pate in this Parade, we need to preserve our Italian heritage and culture.

4 turkey thighs4 medium potatoes2 medium onions2 fresh tomatoes2 cloves garlic

Peel potatoes, garlic and onions. Cut each into quarters and set aside. Wash tomatoes and cut into quarters. Place washed and dried turkey thighs in a roasting pan (skin up). Distribute potato, garlic, and onion portions around the turkey thighs. Placecut-up tomatoes over the thighs, potato and onion portions. Add the bouillon cube, lemon juice and water to the roasting pan. Spread the olive oil over the vegetables and turkey. Cover with aluminum foil and place in preheated 350°F oven. Check after forty-fi ve minutes. Baste contents with liquid in the roasting pan. Salt to taste. Return to oven and bake an additional twenty minutes. A portion of water may be added if needed. Baste contents and return to oven uncovered. Allow cooking until fork tender and browned to your liking (approx. 10 to 20 additional minutes). OPTIONAL: Add sliced green peppers or mushrooms to the recipe.

NOTE: For years, turkeys were available only during holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. Today the large bird is made available to consumers in cut-up portions. As an alternate for cut-up chicken, my husband and I enjoy turkey thighs. Turkey legs and/or wings can be added to the thighs in the above recipe.

It has been an exciting and active past three or four weeks for the G. Marconi Lodge of Lee.

At our September 3rd meeting, a G. Marconi Lodge Library Loan Program was established. Thus far, we have two DVD’s: “Golden Door” and “Canvas” as well as three books: Italy, Firenze Mille Anni and Vocabolario della Lingua Italiana. Slowly we will build on this.

On September 20th, the Lodge ran a full bus trip to the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Saint Gennaro Festival. Coffee, doughnuts and juice were served on the way to New York. For entertainment, the DVD “Golden Door” was shown.

On Saturday, September 26th, G. Marconi Lodge held a fundraiser as part of Founders Weekend in the Park in downtown Lee. Founders Weekend is an annual event, running three days, honoring the founders of Lee. Many events are held such as sidewalk sales, restaurants selling food on the street, raffl es, tours of historic Lee, a parade, a Hispanic Festival, Lee Historical dis-plays and many other events. The Lodge made close to $800 with its Italian Fest.

On September 30th, a display was set up in the Lee Public Library for Italian October History Month showing information on the History of the G. Marconi Lodge, memorabilia, Italian minutes going back to 1933 and other information on the Great Italian Immigration of 1880-1923.

At our October 1st meeting, we received a visit from Father Adam Forno, Chaplain of the State of New York OSIA and National Chaplain of OSIA. He graciously said our opening and closing prayers as well as speaking under the Welfare of the Order.

On November 1st, a Mass for our deceased members of G. Marconi Lodge was held at the St. Vincent de Paul Church in Lenox Dale.

LODGE NEWS

Worcester Order of Sons of Italy Lodge #168 has chosen Michael P. Sacco, CPA, MST, as the 2009 Achievement Award Recipient. A reception was held at the Coral Seafood in Worces-ter. Great music was provided by “Seabreeze”, and a great time was enjoyed by all!

The evening began with the Toastmaster, Stephen Gemel-li asking guests to describe Michael in a word or two. Some of the answers were; respon-sible, loving, strong, best friend, gentleman, great Italian.

Mr. Kevin Mercadante, Presi-dent of Lodge #168, began his remarks by reminding the guests that Lodge #168 is the oldest lodge, a great lodge and an active lodge in which all members work and help out whenever needed. He continued by saying, “Michael is my best friend and has been for almost 30 years. He is 2nd to my wife and family. He is a true Ital-ian; he speaks it, lives it and shows it.”

Worcester Mayor Konstatina Lukes shared some thoughts that reminded all that we all share the immigrant experience because the city is a city of im-migrants and read a proclama-tion of the history and celebra-tion of Italians, and declaring October 17th, 2009 Christopher Columbus Day. She continued in saying that Michael Sacco clearly made a difference in Worcester and presented him with the Key to the City.

Mrs. Rita Maletta Robak brought greetings from the national president and her col-leagues congratulating Michael for his work. She continued to tell him that she hopes he continues to work hard. Grand Lodge President James DiSte-fano fi rst thanked Mike’s par-ents Pasquale and Linda Sacco because they are responsible for their son, for bringing him up right and for teaching him about his heritage and culture. He thanked Michael for learning well. President DiStefano made a presentation to Michael for all the work he has done. In addi-tion, Representative Stephen Pedone also made some re-marks concerning Mike’s proud Italian heritage and contribu-tions to the community, and presented him with a citation from the State House.

Michael is a life-long resident of Worcester, Massachusetts.

Michael P. Sacco, CPA, MST; Lodge #168 Achievement Award Recipient for 2009by Maria L. Sciannameo, EdD

Born on July 1, 1966 he is the son of Pasquale & Linda (DiRe-da) Sacco and the grandson of the late Pasquale & Mary Sacco and Salvatore & Grazia DiReda. Michael has one sister, Ann-Marie Quarta of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.

It’s almost like the phrase or the book “Growing up Italian”; was based on Michael’s youth and his upbringing. Michael’s family lived in a typical two-decker setting off of Plantation St. His family lived on the top fl oor and his grandparents on the fi rst fl oor. The entire back yard was picturesque as it entailed the largest vegetable garden known to man and the most delicious fruit trees and grapevine where everyone could sit under and enjoy. However, this all came with a price; his father and grandfather split the garden area in half as if to compete with each other but his help went both ways. Most kids went and played outside every day after school, but it was Mike’s job to report to his grandparents fi rst to see what needed to be done; mostly cut-ting the lawn, weeding and watering, but never allowed to actually touch the vegeta-bles unless it was under adult supervision.

On weekends, when other children went to the beach or to amusement parks, the entire Sacco family including aunts, uncles and cousins went to a remote location only known to Italians as Sandy Point, Rhode Island. Here amidst the horsefl ies that were the size of B-52 bombers, they fi shed all day. When the tide was high, nets were dragged for smelts and when the tide was low, the adults went out quahog-ging while the children stayed ashore and dug for clams. At the end of the day the cars were packed and enough fi sh was brought home that would make even Legal Seafood jeal-ous. These were fond childhood experiences never to be ridi-culed but cherished forever. In addition, Michael learned how to make fresh sausage and the importance of poking enough air holes in the casings so that the meat would be packed tight enough so the casings wouldn’t tear — a tradition that even now has been passed down to his own son as several times a year fresh sausage along with

their ever popular soppresatta is made.

Michael graduated from Holy Name C.C.H.S. and received his B.A. in Accounting from Assumption College and his graduate degree in taxation from Bentley College. During his school days, he was involved heavily in sports, both playing and coaching, student govern-ment and theater. During his audition for Pippin is where he met the love of his life Andrea Magana. Michael and Andrea, affectionately known as Chickee, already knew each other as they belonged to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Michael was an altar boy and Chickee was a soloist in the choir. How-

ever, running into each other and working together solidifi ed their future. They were mar-ried on December 3, 1989 and have two beautiful children Ariana (16) and Michael Jr. (13), both honor students attending St. Peter-Marian Senior/Junior High School.

Having been a CPA and work-ing for one of the then “Big Eight” fi rms for several years, Michael decided to venture out onto his own and create his own prac-tice. Sacco & Associates, P.C. is a tax and business advisory fi rm located on 100 Grove Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. For the past fi fteen years, Michael and his staff have been serving Central Massachusetts and beyond providing compliance and representation services for individuals and corporations with tax controversy issues. His practice is regionally and nationally recognized in this arena and he now represents clients in thirty-seven states. In 2003, he was honored by the Worcester Business Journal as one of the “Top 40 Under Forty” Business Leaders in Central Massachusetts and has received a Mayoral and House of Representatives citation for his business contributions. He can be heard once a month on WCRN radio (830AM) as a co-host of the program “Your Financial Compass” discuss-ing tax and business planning strategies.

Michael is a Fellow of the Massachusetts Society of Cer-tified Public Accountants, a member of the American In-

stitute of Certifi ed Public Ac-countants where he serves on the committee for Taxation and Ethics. He was a past Board member and Treasurer of Holy Name C.C.H.S. and now serves on the Advisory Board at St. Peter-Marian C.C.H.S. An active member of our Lady of Loreto Church, he served as Co-Chair-man of the famous “Sausage Booth” of the Italian Festival for twenty years and Co–Chaired Family Day in 2006. Also in 2006, Michael was appointed by Monsignor Rocco Piccolomini and currently serves as the Parish’s Finance Chairman to oversee and restructure all par-ish fi nancial activities. Michael was a long-time baseball coach alongside his father and umpire for the Jack Barry Little League and currently coaches and instructs for the Joe Schwartz Little League. Besides coach-ing, Michael is a member of the Board of Directors and serves as the Director of Marketing/Sponsorship. The Joe Schwartz League had a dream to install lights for the children to play baseball at night. This dream was realized and Michael played an integral part of their fund-raising efforts. He was also a VIP pacesetter for many years for the Massachusetts Easter Seals and was involved with the Heart Ball as an auction spon-sor and supporter.

Michael joined the Worcester Lodge #168, O.S.I.A. in the early 1990’s. Having jumped into action immediately he became a Trustee and was catapulted directly to President. He served as President from 1999 to 2003 and again from 2005 to 2007. He has been a delegate to the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts for many years serving and co-chairing on numerous committees such as Credentials, Elections, and Law and Finance. He was also a member of the Commission for Social Justice assisting his fellow commissioners’ com-bat the negative stereotyping that Italian-Americans have been faced with for countless years.

Michael was instrumental in the addition of new functions such as the 50’s Dance, Maca-roni Suppers, and the now ever popular Annual Golf Tourna-ment. One of the most impor-

The Christoforo Colombo Regina Elena Lodge #169 of Fitchburg celebrated their annual Me-morial Mass for their deceased members at St. Anthony’s Church in Fitchburg at the 10:30 A.M. Mass on Sunday, October 11, 2009.

Ann Pacetti and Florence Volpe coordinated the Mass schedule. Anna Pacetti and Robert “Bob” Pacetti, President of the Fitchburg Lodge, brought up the offertory gifts. The mass was attended by a number of members of the Fitchburg Lodge. It

is held each year to pay respect to our deceased members. It serves as a remembrance of our dedicated members, who have gone before us.

After the Mass, all were invited to the St. An-thony’s Church hall for coffee, donuts, friendship and socialization, sponsored by the Christoforo Colombo Regina Elena Fitchburg Lodge #169. Assisting in serving and cleanup were Ann Pac-etti, Florence Volpe, Bob Pacetti, Nenay Schultz, Christine Roy and Andy Roy.

On Saturday, August 15th, a number of wonderful friends to the ladies lodge teamed up for what turned out to be a successful gala fashion show. Lodge President, Dottie D’Onofrio welcomed over 125 folks who had gathered at the Don Orione, Sons of Italy Hall in East Boston, thanking them for coming and sharing in the support of our Scholarship & Charitable programs. She gave a special acknowledgment to the technical support team of WCAT Executive Director Mike Cabral and video producer, Barbara Bishop. Promotional support came from Robin Cole, founder of the Winthrop-by-the Sea online website and Winthrop Sun Transcript editor, Cary Schuman. Dottie thanked the area merchants for their participation in our show program booklet and reminded the folks that there were some wonderful raffl e gifts in the offering today.

She introduced her very hard working committee; Rose LoConte, Peggy Pacifi cio and show commentator Anne Todino McNeff. Start-ing off the afternoon, Chuckie Famolare of Famolare’s Catering served up a delectable sit down full-course Chicken Cordon Bleu dinner that got rave reviews.

Project Runway included fall fashions from Marshall’s of Sau-gus and some wonderful entertaining skits. Starring in the day’s performance was State Senator Anthony Petruccelli and his fam-ily, Alessandra, Alexia, and little guy Anthony, Jr., in their back-to-school adventure outfi ts. Sister Bette Federico, dressed in her 1800’s old fashion bathing suit, walked the runway to the tune of ‘By-the-Beautiful Sea’. Town Council member, Linda Calla was off to the offi ce in her lovely business attire. Winthrop’s Fire Chief, Paul Flanagan and Senior Center Director, Nancy Williams wowed the folks with ‘I Got You Babe’ in their great hippie outfi ts. Then it was game time with Town Council Vice President, Joe Ferrino dressed in his sporty outfi t donning a Patriots cap. All dressed up for the party were the lovely Stephanie Locke with her daughter Alana. Here in Winthrop we are fortunate to have the Winthrop School of Performing Arts and CEO’s John and Trudy Macero gave us a wonderful singing duet. Our president, Dottie outdid herself in a very funny skit to Patsy’s Cline’s ‘She’s Got You’. Daughter Sofi a and mom, Town Clerk, Carla Vitale were all bundled up and ready to head out to the apple orchards. Casual and khakis found Richard Honan of ‘Support the Troops’ traveling up from ‘P’ Town via the ferry to participate in the day’s activities. A very lovely Brit-tany Lauren Lukas graced the stage dressed in her college look as she heads back to a busy sophomore year at Emmanuel College. Highlight of the afternoon’s show was the high steppin’ — high spirited team of Bobby Lukas, Richard Honan and Chuckie Famo-lare giving us their great rendition of the Can-Can. In closing all cast members joined on stage singing ‘God Bless America’.

On Sunday afternoon, Oc-tober 25th, the Maria Montes-sori Lodge of Belmont had a Luncheon and Cabaret show, starring the “Hot Spots” caba-ret productions. It was held at the Elks Hall in Lexington, and it was a most delightful and entertaining performance with a lot of good music, dancing, comedy and fun.

The luncheon was catered by Marty’s and it included roast top sirloin of beef as well as stuffed breast of chicken. There was plenty of good food and wonderful entertainment.

The hall was decorated with very festive white, black and gold balloons, as well as top hats as centerpieces. All of the decorations were done by our sister member Tina Ovalle and her committee.

Chairladies of the cabaret were Carmela LaFauci and Marie Bongiorno, who did a fantastic job. The committee consisted of Jean Frassica, President, Carmela LaFau-ci, Marie Bongiorno, Marie Hubbard, Louise Rodrigues, Olga Mill, Ann Centrella, Em-ily Zuccarello, Tina Ovalle, and Dolly Haddad.

Invited guests were: State President Jim DiStefano and his wife Kathy, and our State Deputy Mary Cooper. Everyone who attended this wonder-ful function enjoyed every minute.

We received a number of donations, baskets and gifts, which made our raffl e a tremen-dous success.

• Michael P. Sacco (Continued from Page 16)Seacoast Area Lodge #2303ITALIAN FESTIVAL

O n S u n d a y , September 27, the Seacoast Area Lodge #2303 held its second annu-al Italian Festi-val at their lodge headquarters in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Fes-tival goers, includ-ing Portsmouth Mayor Tom Fer-rini, the fi rst pres-ident of the lodge Albert DiPaolo, and City Coun-cil candidate Bob Lister enjoyed Ital-ian food, culture, and even a few

games of Scopa. Many attendees had the opportunity to meet commu-nity members for the fi rst time, and were able to share the importance ofItalian culture in the absence of a centralized Italian neighbor-hood in Portsmouth. It has been diffi cult since the urban renewal for Italian Americans living in Portsmouth to get together, as the new developments forced many long-time residents of the North End to disperse across the city. Lodge member Delmira Morse, as quoted in the Portsmouth Herald, said of the importance of the festival, “the impetus was to share our heritage and our tradi-tions with the community and let the community get to know us better.” Proceeds and donations collected from the event went to the Families First Health and Support Center and the Salvation Army.

Elena Centi Pizzutilli bonds with her granddaughter, Cassandra Centi Pizzutilli, 14, during the Festival.

tant accomplishments during his tenure was the revival of the Junior Lodge #2570. With the help of Joan D’Argenis and MaryJane O’Toole the Junior Lodge is comprised of children ages 12 to 17. The kids enjoy learning, sharing and experi-encing our Italian Heritage. In 2007, after two years of deal-ing and petitioning with local politicians, City Hall Offi cials, Public Safety and Engineering personnel, Michael’s greatest accomplishment to the Sons of Italy came as the City of Worcester fi nally allowed the Lodge to have street signage and be recognized as an active vibrant organization alongside the Rotary Club, Elks Club, Kiwanis Club, etc. As you drive around Worcester you will run into beautiful purple and gold signs with our offi cial emblem the Lion and below it “Worcester Lodge #168.” They are located at the top of Shrewsbury Street, Monsignor Maffei square that is the entrance to Route 290 from Grafton Street and the entrance of Route 9 from Leicester head-ing into Worcester.

Michael has always said “working and giving back to the community is never hard work or a chore; it was and always

will be a labor of love.” None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the understanding and sacrifice of his wife and children. He is humbled and honored to be chosen as this year’s recipi-ent. He graciously accepts this award on behalf of his entire family.

During his acceptance re-marks, Michael noted how he often thought “… maybe some-day…” then he thought of the previous award recipients and believed that he could never compete with them … people he knew and people his family knew. Michael continued noting that his wife and family made many sacrifi ces, as he was in-volved with the activities of the lodge and in the community. “I don’t belong in this book. I only tried to make things better for people I’m humbled…thank you for your faith and trust … I thank you for your support and for supporting this organiza-tion. Don’t ever stop working.” Michael was humbled to be considered and chosen as one who would be among the past recipients and accepted the achievement award for his wife and family.

The next morning, Sunday

October 18th, 2009, a memo-rial wreath was placed at the statue of Christopher Colum-bus at Union Station. During this memorial ceremony, lodge members paid tribute and remembered all the deceased members of Lodge #168. Mon-signor Rocco Piccolomini cel-ebrated a memorial mass for the Worcester Lodge deceased members during the 10:00am Mass at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church after which members and friends participated in a memorial breakfast at the church center.

Members of the Commit-tee were: Margaret Campbell, State Trustee, District II, Grand Lodge-Chairperson; Kevin Mer-cadante, President, Worcester Lodge #168; Donna Giuliani, Lodge #168 vice President; Gladys Bello, Clara Merola, Kenneth Simoncini, Rose Por-caro, Arthur Porcaro, Florence Murgo, Anthony Murgo, Linda Dattis, Kate Mercadante, Elena Olivieri, Rosemarie Mikitar-ian, Maria Sciannameo, Mary-Ann Bello, Helen Aromando, Ralph Aromando, Enzo Ang-ilella, Patricia Solitro, Matteo Solitro, Maria O’Connor, Mi-chael O’Connor, Shirley Battell, and Aurora Fusaro.
