nto the Noble Barony Bordermarch,HE Santiago & HE Elisabeth, do send these warm greetings...U

The War of the Rams is now upon us in full force! This year’s Event Steward, Dona Leah, has her coordinators lined up and ready

to handle any situation that might arise during the event.A Royal Procession on horseback will again take place on Saturday morning. It will

start at the equestrian area and end at Their Majesties pavilion near the Border Keep castle.

This year we shall once again be hosting Ansteorra’s Middle Eastern Dance Championship. We are looking forward to watching the best of the best compete for the right to be called Ansteorra’s newest Middle Eastern Dance Champion.

There will also be an Inter-Kingdom Charter Design Competition with Ansteorra & Gleann Abhann. This competition is sure to bring out the very best Scribal artist from both Ansteorra and Gleann Abhann.

A Populace choice A&S competition will take place under the BFT on Saturday.Merchant row will be filled with plenty of merchants and taverns this year, there will be

something for everyone to buy and eat!Bordermarch will be camping in a common camp area again this year. Large quantities

of food, drink and entertainment are the norm in the Bordermarch encampment. We will be arriving Wednesday at site to begin setting things up. All hands will be

needed at site as soon as they can get there to help with the set-up and organization for the event.

A lot of pre-planning and pre-doing went into making the War of the Rams happen, and HE Elisabeth and I wish to thank everyone in advance for their contributions toward making Bordermarch’s War of the Rams a success.

that the “ancient” gourds of the Eastern Hemisphere were not the same kind as wild and infarmlands of the New World; and, gourds of the Old World had multiple varieties, many of which are no longer grown. Where medieval period cookbooks refer to gourdes, in redactions squash has been substituted. These foods are “in period” because they existed as long ago; the question is “where in the word” did some of them originate?

Pumpkins have been cultivated for thousands of years in Central America. In Mayan ruins, seeds have been found that are dated to several thousand years B.C. Explorers brought diseases with them to the Western Hemisphere and carried plants back to the Eastern Hemisphere in what became termed as the Columbian Exchange. It is recorded that crews of Columbus and Conquistadors carried squash and pumpkin seeds from the New World back to Europe.

Early in the 1500s, pumpkins that were taken to Europe were first used as a pig fodder rather than a human food source. With farmers and cooks finding pumpkins similar to “old world” gourds and squash, superior in flavor, and as easy to cultivate, “pompions” / pumpkins were soon grown for human consumption.

The survival of Pre-Columbian Native Americans depended in large part on the successful cultivation of beans, corn, and squash, known as “The Three Sisters.” Native Americans introduced squash to Europeans and Africans when they arrived in the Americas.

The familiar term “squash” comes from the Massachuset Native Americans’ word “askutasquash,” which means “eaten raw.” “Squash” is the term that became part of European languages within the Americas such as Spanish, English, and Dutch. Almost all squash belong to the Cucurbita maxima or Curcubita moschata species. Pumpkins also belong to this species. The word pumpkin is derived from the French term “pompion” for “cooked by the sun.”

Summer squash are grouped under Curcurbita pepo. Summer squash is the small fast growing kind harvested while the rind is still soft. Winter squash and pumpkins are C. maxima or C. moschata. Their point of origin is Mesoamerica, long before any Spanish

colonization during the 15th and 16th centuries. What is called “winter squash” probably came from the Andes Mountains in northern Argentina. When

Conquistadores found it growing there, it was still not yet known to Central or Northern America. Winter squash, generally

cooked before eating, is harvested in the mature fruit

stage after the seeds inside have fully matured and the skin

has hardened into a tough rind. At this stage, most varieties of this fruit can be stored for use during the winter.

Of the Three Sisters, squash just may be the catalytic plant that advanced ancient peoples from hunter-gatherer to grower. Remnants of Curcurbita seed found in caves in Ecuador are suggested to be 12,000 years old, predating the previously known dawn of agriculture by hundreds of years. Why squash? The bright colored large fruits of wild squash were easy to find. Those offered tasty flesh, nutritious seed, edible flowers, and containers when dried. Early ceramic pots even resembled commonly used vessels made from the hard-shell squash known as gourd.

Among other sources, circa 1356, Sir John Mandeville published in Travels (his work now appearing in The Book of Fabulous Beasts by Joseph Nigg) that in one exotic land where he ventured, “…there

groweth a manner of, as it were, gourds. And when they be ripe, men cut them atwo, and men find within, in flesh, in bone, and blood, as though it were, a little lamb without wool. And men eat the fruit and the beast.” …I wonder if he had found a cotton plant… His book which included little lambs growing inside of gourds was written off as

fiction; yet he must have somewhere gotten the idea of eating gourds.

…Many sources are available in this study. My research continues in this area of interest, particularly in preparing redactions suggested in writings by the esteemed His Grace Duke Cariadoc of the Bow as well as in an Andulusian vegetable dish of the 1200s, and other findings. I am reminded of varied civilizations, cultures spread over many geographic locations, which have in common a liking for gourds, squash, and pumpkins. (People acquainted with my family know we named a wonderful orange kitten ‘Pumpkin’!)

An artist of the 1600s showed us his version of “gourd.” Stained glass windows displayed at Oxford Christ Church, designed in the 1630s by Abraham van Linge, depict the story from Jonah 4:6-8 of a gourd vine outside of Nineveh sheltering the Prophet Johan to teach him a lesson on forgiveness. Whether the gourd was actually “the kind” he depicted thousands of years after the event, in the mind of this later period artisan, he had the feasibility to illustrate the thousands of years old gourd as yellowish, in a pear shape, similar in size to the man’s hand.

By comparison, a 4th century Italian mosaic pavement of the same Jonah message interpreted the gourd vine instead producing a green cucumber-like gourd comparable in size to a man’s forearm.

This year the Barony has been asked to participate

in the first annual Renaissance Festival in Lumberton being held at Adventure Kingdom Miniature Golf Coarse.

This will be a demo for us, the second of the year (two are required). The dates are Sat. Nov. 3, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday Nov. 4, noon-6 p.m. Garb is mandatory and there is no admission fee for those that are participating in the demo.

We need any and all volunteers as this will be a great way to get our group information out there and meet and greet new folks. If you or your family want to actual play and enjoy the festivities then the fees will apply (see website) http://www.adventurekingdom.com/events.php

Please bring your arts and science projects, sewing, pottery etc...as we will be demonstrating it all and be ready to mingle. They also have a wonderful rock garden that would be great for story telling and barding.

Sunday, Nov. 4ths fighter practice will be held at the demo instead of Rogers Park that way we can have a really good showing. However we would like to have fighters both days. Our space is under a big shade tree and will be roped off for the fighters. Dream Keepers Inc. will also be participating with a separate booth selling links and drinks for castle upkeep.

More at Oct. populace meeting, so please be there to learn the details or contact us online or via phone 409-673-0897.

This is an awesome opportunity for Bordermarch. They are wanting us to participate each year and are willing to work around our scheduled event. The City of Lumberton is very interested in this endeavor as well and supporting what Adventure Kingdom is trying to do. Lets be as supportive as we can and increase our member numbers as well.
