from the desk of father johnOn this 5th Sunday of Easter, we find ourselves with a Gospel reading that is not looking back in time to an event which happened before the resurrection of Jesus from the dead on Easter Sunday, but rather our Gospel reading takes place at the Last Supper. All our Sunday Gospel readings from Easter Sunday until today have all focused on events that happened after Jesus rose from the dead. Today, that is not the case. In fact, the same can be said for next Sunday’s Gospel, they both recount events that take place at the Last Supper. It would be reasonable for any of us to wonder why the Church would think that on the 5th and 6th Sundays of Easter the Gospels should be taken from the Gospel of John and tell of events that happened on the evening of the Last Supper before Jesus is arrested and condemned to death. It does not matter if the Gospel reading is taken from Cycle A, B, or C, they all share events which occurred the evening of the Last Supper. It is interesting to think that the two Sundays before we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, we have Gospel readings that transport us back to the evening of the Last Supper. We can see a similarity with the Last Supper and the Ascension of the Lord, for both of these events take place before another important event. The Last Supper takes place before the death and resurrection of our Savior, and the Ascension of the Lord takes place before Pentecost Sunday and the coming of the Holy Spirit, the birth of the Church. It is inconceivable to imagine the death and resurrection of Jesus without the Last Supper the night before. Also, it was not possible for the Holy Spirit to come while Jesus was still appearing to His disciples. The Last Supper and the Ascension of the Lord both help prepare the disciples for what is to come. The death and resurrection of Jesus does not rely on the Last Supper, and the coming of the Holy Spirit

does not rely on the ascension of Jesus. Of course, it does seem almost inconceivable that the death and resurrection of Jesus would take place without the Last Supper, for it is at this event that Jesus instituted the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass—the source and summit of our faith. It is right after the Last Supper and the death and resurrection of Jesus that the early Church, on the first day of the week, turned to the Eucharist to draw strength. The Eucharist right from the first day of the week has been the source and summit of our faith. It is the Eucharist that sustained the early Church as it waited for the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday. So, it makes perfect sense, as we draw closer to the celebration of Pentecost Sunday, that we are reminded of the events that occurred on the evening of the Last Supper. The Ascension of the Lord can be seen as having a similar relationship to Pentecost as the Last Supper does to the death and resurrection of Jesus. Our Gospel this Sunday reminds us that what Jesus is doing in the world is for us, and it is out of love that He is here with us. Jesus gives us the seven sacraments, because He loves us, He ascends to heaven because he loves us, and the list can go on. It is love that motivates our Lord, and truly nothing else. There is no hidden message or plot line. It is quite simply love that causes Jesus to spend 33 years in this world like us in all things but sin. Our Gospel this Sunday and next Sunday remind us that it is love that drives our Lord to do what He has done for us. Knowing this, the questions we can and should ask ourselves is how can and should we respond to this love? The answer to this question is contained within our Gospel this Sunday for Jesus after Judas had left tells His Apostles. “I give you a new commandment; love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.” (John 13:34) —Fr. John
