Jesus!held!up!a!Samaritan!as!a!mod-el! of! gratitude! would! have!been! a! real! poke! in! the! eye.!�Has! none! but!this! foreign-er!returned! to! give! thanks! to!God?�" This! foreigner.! During the month of November, the Human Concerns committee members are putting together gift bags for some nursing home residents. They will be distributed in December. Hopefully, this will make Christmas special for them. There are many charitable organizations that would appreciate your donations this time of the year. We ask that you remember them. The Outreach Center needs donations of food and Christmas gifts as well. Thank you for your generous donations to our monthly charities through the year.

When I turn the clocks back an hour each fall, the reality of growing nights and shortening days engulfs me. Now I rise in darkness, and when I finish my day’s work hours later, I face darkness once again. Night’s blackness seems to me banishment, exile. It is not so much the winter’s cold that I long to escape, but the darkness itself. Let me hibernate un!l daylight returns! Even though the charts and calendars assure me of the annual return of the sun, s!ll I hold my breath, my belief, !ll by my daily rou!ne I know that Earth has chosen daylight’s grace again. I sense my neighbors’ unease in facing the looming longer hours of darkness as they scurry to put up all sorts of lighted
holiday decora!ons even before the pumpkins of Halloween have been laid to rest. Only when the city turns on its lights of winter fes!val, and neighbors illuminate their homes and windows with lights do I believe that in a few weeks we will not need light of our own making to chase away the long night. In truth our lives today are barely inconvenienced by darkness and cold: we cope with nature’s cycles by the grace of technology, but our darknesses are no less real than those of our ancestors. We NEED Advent: we need the yearly proclama!on of the coming of the Lord, the Light of the world. We keep these seasons not simply because they are our inheritance. They are our inheritance because in the midst of winter our hearts s!ll long for the light, hope, challenge, and promise of the glory to come. The Advent wreath with its four candles, the songs we sing, the scripture readings all retell the stories and con!nue to shape our Chris!an iden!ty. No !me for hiberna!on, this! During the dark Advent days, the church proclaims: be ready, stay alert! See the signs of Emmanuel, God-with-us. BE the sign of God-with-us. The day of the Lord is not only in the future. The reign of the Lord is now to shine and be manifest through his church gathered and living Advent virtues: hear%elt mercy, kindness, humility, pa!ence, forgiveness, jus!ce, peace. In Advent the church prays: “Let our lives be honest and holy in this present age, as we wait for the happiness to come when our great God reveals himself in glory.”
