Don’t let a nasty oil spill ruin the holidays! Are you heating your home with an oil furnace? If you are, then this message is for you.Oil furnaces are one of the most dangerous and expensive ways to heat your home.
BC Hazmat has responded to 36 heating-oil spill calls in Greater Victoria this year, three times more than normal. Most recently in Saanich, where a homeowner lost their entire home to a spill.
Th ousands of pre-1970 Victoria homes have aging oil tanks, and many will fail without the home owner even knowing because they rust from the inside out.
Most home owners are not insured for oil leak cleanups, the average cost of which is in the $250,000 range, according to BC Hazmat.
Another recent spill has a Saanich home owner responsible for a cleanup cost of between $8,000 and $20,000. And now the house’s value has dropped and is virtually uninsurable.
Th ere is a better way. Let EcoSmart help you with a free oil tank inspection and discussion about upgrading to a heat pump.
Here are just a few reasons why switching from oil to a heat pump is a better option:
• An oil tank over 20 years old is not insurable for oil spills.
• Oil furnaces burn dirty fossil fuels that pose a fi re and health hazard for you and your family.
• Oil prices are volatile - making your fuel heating costs very unpredictable.
• Oil furnaces emit as much green house gas as the average family car.
EcoSmart Heating and Cooling is off ering a Switch and Save program to help rid Greater Victoria of old oil furnaces and oil tanks. We off er a up to $1,200 cashback rebate on top of the government rebates if you install a new Energy Star high effi ciency heat pump. We also off er no payments and no interest for one year OAC.
Live Smart rebate:...........$1,500
Ecosmart rebate:............up to $1200
Total savings:.................up to $2,700
Th ese off ers expire March 31st, 2013.
We off er a heat pump for every budget -- so switch and save with an EcoSmart heat pump today!
Walk down any Victoria BC residential street on a cold day, and you can’t miss it — the acrid smell of heating oil. Victoria’s addiction to heating oil is partly due to our Island geography and partly due to inertia. Up until the 60s, there was no heating solution to match the reliability and affordability of fuel oil. But the days of of heating oil are numbered. Instead of buying a new oil tank or upgrading your oil furnace, here are a few reasons to make the switch to a heat pump from EcoSmart:
Eliminate the threat of lawsuits and contaminationOne cup of oil can contaminate an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Last winter, there were 11 home-heating oil spills in Greater Victoria that required BC Hazmat’s services, the most damaging of which was a 1000L spill into Colquitz Creek that killed scores of sh. The homeowner is ghting with his insurance company to cover the $60,000 in cleanup costs. Fuel oil tanks almost always leak from the inside-out, and have a lifespan of 10-15 years. Who needs that headache? A heat pump runs on electricity, and requires no yearly ll-up.
Avoid Carbon Monoxide and Fire HazardsOil and gas furnaces burn fossil fuels, and must be inspected annually for leaks in chimney ues, faulty pilot lights, fuel lters and tanks leaks. They inherently pose a re and health hazard to your family, one that just doesn’t exist with a heat pump.
Save monthly heating costsThe typical oil-heated home in Victoria spends about $100/month on heating, not including taxes. A 2-ton heat pump will heat your home for less than half that cost, and you’ll get the option of having air conditioning in the summer too.
Reduce your carbon footprintHydro power is the primary source of electricity in BC, making heat pumps a very low carbon heating and cooling method. Each year gas and oil furnaces emit more greenhouse gases than the average family car, adding to the problem of climate change. Heat pumps have been widely recognized as one of the simplest things you can do to reduce you impact on the planet.
We’ll get rid of your oil furnace and tank —
and pay you for what’s left in it!If you’re still undecided about converting your oil furnace to a heat pump, here’s an unbeatable offer: we’ll remove your old oil furnace and tank and replace it with a new Energy Star-rated high ef ciency air handler and air source heat pump, and give you up to $1200*! We don’t know how long we’ll continue this offer, so Switch and Save today!. In addition, there is an additional $1500 government rebate available, making for up to $2700 in total savings. This offer is in effect until March 31st of 2013.
*Note: Assuming purchase of a heat pump system from EcoSmart Victoria.
Switch from an Oil Furnace and Save Money
Switch SAVE!
What is a heat pump?A heat pump works on the principle that heat exists in air, even when the air is cool. Most heat pumps are split-system models, and have one coil indoors and one coil outdoors. When a heat pump is functioning as a heater the air outside the home is used to evaporate a refrigerant in the outdoor coil. In this process heat from the outside air is extracted as it evaporates the liquid refrigerant in the coil, converting the liquid refrigerant into the warm gas.
Th e gas is then compressed and is transferred from the outdoor coil to the indoor coil. Once indoors, the gas is condensed which releases heat in the process, and the heat is distributed through the house using fans built into the heat pump and the homes duct work.
When the heat pump is working to cool your home, the duct work and fans bring the warm air in the home to the compressor unit. Th e compressor unit then uses the same gas evaporation/compression process it uses to heart your home, but this time in reverse, to extract the warm air from the home to the outside. So maybe you don’t believe that heat pumps are magic, but the performace and effi ciency of heat pumps have made believers out of many satisfi ed home owners.
