ldquoThe beginning of wisdom is this Get wisdom and whatever else you get get insight Prize her highly and she will exalt you she will honor you if you embrace her She will place on your head a fair garland she will bestow on you a beautiful crownrdquo Proverbs 47-9

With each passing month we move further along in our worship series The Bible ndash A Story of Love Belonging Redemption and Hope We began with the Torah the first five books of the Bible and some key Choices that Change Us including Choosing to Have a Relationship with God Being Open to the Unexpected Embracing Uncertainty and Reverence for Life

Then we turned to The Historical Books with the theme of Learning from History So We Donrsquot Repeat it We heard the positive stories of faithful kind devoted and courageous men and women like Caleb Ruth Samuel Elisha Ezra Nehemiah and Esther who stood apart in their lifetimes from the faithlessness disobedience and idolatry of so many others whose examples we donrsquot want to follow or repeat This is true even of King Solomon who didnrsquot display as much godly wisdom as he might have If you read through Kings and Chronicles you encountered many people who lacked the faithfulness courage and devotion of the individuals listed above

In November we turn to a section of the Bible often called The Wisdom Literature In the Hebrew Bible lsquowisdom literaturersquo is generally understood to refer to the books of Job Proverbs and Ecclesiastes There are also certain Psalms such as Psalm 37 which seem to reflect wisdom influence These are the four books of the Bible we will be reading and hearing from in worship and our daily devotions in November

Sadly wisdom seems to be in short supply in our time The Book of Proverbs in particular has a great deal to say about the contrast between those who are wise and those who are foolish The life of a wise person is marked by a desire to learn and grow a willingness to listen and be taught by self-control discipline temperance hard work generosity empathy and compassion for the poor Do you know anyone who fits that description Proverbs would say that person is wise

The fool is one who has no desire for wisdom or instruction is not teachable or open and is selfish greedy lacking in self-control undisciplined in their sex life and in regard to alcohol is lazy speaks boorishly boastfully falsely and inappropriately and is prideful Do you know anyone who fits that description Proverbs would say that person is a fool and should be avoided at all costs

We hope as we look at Job Proverbs Ecclesiastes and Psalms this month that we can all grow in wisdom so that our lives may demonstrate the qualities of wisdom to everyone we encounter each day

As Proverbs 313-18 declares ldquoHappy are those who find wisdom and those who get understanding for her income is better than silver and her revenue better than gold She is more precious than jewels and nothing you desire can compare with her Long life is in her right hand in her left hand are riches and honor Her ways are ways of pleasantness and all her paths are peace She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her those who hold her fast are called happyrdquo

World Mission Offering (WMO) Thanks

Throughout the month of October we received offerings for the WMO We are pleased to announce that BBC has received over $20000 to date for this yearrsquos WMO The WMO is the single largest source of funding for the core work of our American Baptist missionaries and our national partners around the globe Our gifts to the WMO support missionaries in Africa Asia Europe the Middle East and the Caribbean Thank you for your faithful and generous support of our missionaries

Past Present and Future

As the saying goes A picture is worth a thousand words We share pictures to talk about climbing mountains crossing oceans enjoying portraits of life with friends family and delicious food One of my favorite things and something that stood out in a big way for me about the image of the two trees Pastor Doug shared in worship last month on October 17 was that for me that image represented the past the present and the future Like Charles Dickens Christmas story A Christmas Carol the picture symbolizes a living reminder of our ability of what to preserve and what to choose

The large stately tree uprooted by the storms of life was described with great articulation as in some ways symbolizing our past traditions friendships a long and good history of living things and loving people The contrast of the enormous tree on its side next to the sapling freshly planted tree putting down roots directly on top of the spot where the old tree stood was a picture of the present where a rich history meets with anticipation of an unknown future Shifting focus to the smaller tree Pastor Doug described it as a sign of a hopeful future

Past present and future we are the people of God connected to a community visible and invisible proclaiming Gods love for generations yet unborn Past present and future Gods love is a beacon a guide and a main stay on our journey as we navigate changing tides traditions customs and experiences (Hebrews 138) Past present and future Brewster Baptist Church remains a place where we can love grow and share Gods love I am grateful for this incredible community of faith and pray it will continue to bear much good lasting fruit May God bless you Pastor Joe Greemore

Wow we are racing toward the end of the year and the holidays at breakneck speed It was August I blinked and now we are in November I still stress that many sentences still include the word COVID as either the cause of change or a necessary regulation that must be considered in planning What has also happened is a new approach to worship which reminds me of a study in graduate school At the time providers like Amazon were very new and the impact on small bookstores and even chains like Barnes amp Noble and Borders was being challenged Briefly the conclusion my study group arrived at was to mitigate the risk of competition and ensure success the right balance of lsquobricks and clicksrsquo needed to be maintained Amazon has certainly morphed into a broader provision of everything from food to medications to household goods toys and so on and so on Today what once was is returning but not necessarily within the context of the past as habits form in the interim uncertainty about the future and multiple choices of purchasing goods attending meetings and school and certainly worship For those who historically missed services because their jobs necessitated that they work on Sunday they now have the option to participate by viewing services at off hours For those who are unwell they too can hear the Word without the danger of spreading a cold or virus to those around them Yes some great advancements have come out of our limitations and I truly pray that this our digital capabilities are reaching more people than ever But if you arenrsquot attending because you have concerns andor questions please let us know We want to know so we can make adjustments if possible and make sure you have access to programs and services in which you wish to participate We also welcome hearing about any new ideas you may have As promised earlier necessary repairs were made to the roof and HVAC and plans are being made for cleaning and painting in the interior We ask for your patience as we take care of the building that is preparing to celebrate its 200th anniversary As always Irsquom encouraged by the teamwork of dedicated staff and volunteers that I witness through-out the church working tirelessly to provide to the community that is Brewster Baptist Church I want to encourage you to find your niche to contribute and I guarantee that you will get more than you give Please reach out to me or other members of the Advisory Council with your comments and concerns God bless Su Ballantine

At 830 am we invite children to join us in the chapel after they are dismissed from the service for a worship experience designed for them We have music a time of prayer a scripture reading and a message based on the same theme as the weekly sermon This allows grown-ups and kids to engage in conversations to share what theyrsquove learned that morning

At the 1000 am service the preschool and lower elementary kids (grades K-2) meet in the chapel together for Worship Adventures We are setting off on a journey through the Bible that will build a forever friendship with Jesus through Godrsquos story The curriculum uses music videos and a variety of activities to engage all learning styles

The upper elementary kids (grades 3-5) are using the Be Bold curriculum This class will encourage them to begin taking ownership of their faith and teach them to use scripture to answer some of the hard questions that come up heading into those teen years

We look forward to continuing to partner with parents to help build a life-long faith in the hearts of the children in our community One of the new ways to do this is the church App On the ldquogrowrdquo page you will find a synopsis of each of the grouplsquos lessons under BBC Kids It includes kid-friendly sermon questions weekly challenges and scripture reading suggestions designed to carry the lesson through the week as a family

Please join us for Family Game Night on Saturday November 20 from 500 - 730 pm in Fellowship Hall Bring a dish to share and your favorite game

Wow we are racing toward the end of the year and the holidays at breakneck speed It was August I blinked and now we are in November I still stress that many sentences still include the word COVID as either the cause of change or a necessary regulation that must be considered in planning What has also happened is a new approach to worship which reminds me of a study in graduate school At the time providers like Amazon were very new and the impact on small bookstores and even chains like Barnes amp Noble and Borders was being challenged Briefly the conclusion my study group arrived at was to mitigate the risk of competition and ensure success the right balance of lsquobricks and clicksrsquo needed to be maintained Amazon has certainly morphed into a broader provision of everything from food to medications to household goods toys and so on and so on Today what once was is returning but not necessarily within the context of the past as habits form in the interim uncertainty about the future and multiple choices of purchasing goods attending meetings and school and certainly worship For those who historically missed services because their jobs necessitated that they work on Sunday they now have the option to participate by viewing services at off hours For those who are unwell they too can hear the Word without the danger of spreading a cold or virus to those around them Yes some great advancements have come out of our limitations and I truly pray that this our digital capabilities are reaching more people than ever But if you arenrsquot attending because you have concerns andor questions please let us know We want to know so we can make adjustments if possible and make sure you have access to programs and services in which you wish to participate We also welcome hearing about any new ideas you may have As promised earlier necessary repairs were made to the roof and HVAC and plans are being made for cleaning and painting in the interior We ask for your patience as we take care of the building that is preparing to celebrate its 200th anniversary As always Irsquom encouraged by the teamwork of dedicated staff and volunteers that I witness through-out the church working tirelessly to provide to the community that is Brewster Baptist Church I want to encourage you to find your niche to contribute and I guarantee that you will get more than you give Please reach out to me or other members of the Advisory Council with your comments and concerns God bless Su Ballantine

At the 1000 am service the preschool and lower elementary kids (grades K-2) meet in the chapel together for Worship Adventures We are setting off on a journey through the Bible that will build a forever friendship with Jesus through Godrsquos story The curriculum uses music videos and a variety of activities to engage all learning styles

The upper elementary kids (grades 3-5) are using the Be Bold curriculum This class will encourage them to begin taking ownership of their faith and teach them to use scripture to answer some of the hard questions that come up heading into those teen years

We look forward to continuing to partner with parents to help build a life-long faith in the hearts of the children in our community One of the new ways to do this is the church App On the ldquogrowrdquo page you will find a synopsis of each of the grouplsquos lessons under BBC Kids It includes kid-friendly sermon questions weekly challenges and scripture reading suggestions designed to carry the lesson through the week as a family

September 25 2021 All those with us and all those who joined us from distant

places were touched by the memories shared of Genersquos life

Pastor Scalise thank you for your message and for highlighting the poem

ldquoHigh Flightrdquo To my knowledge Gene never expressed the emotional experience

so wonderfully conveyed by its author However I am certain that Gene knew

well the exhilaration and joy of flight as he knew the awareness of Godrsquos

presence with him as he safely transported thousands of lives across oceans

and continents

Pastor Greemore thank you for the wonderful rendition of our Naval Hymn

and also to Chris for the rich accompaniment of music which supported both

violin and voice The music added such a lovely dimension of beauty and

meaning to the service

Those who watched the service from a distance were rather amazed at the

technological miracles of live streaming and commented ldquoso easy to accessrdquo

ldquosuch clarity of picturerdquo and ldquosuch an honor to be a part of itrdquo Thank you to

those who made this experience possible

Lastly thank you to those who created the printed program for his service

October has been a busy month for Building amp Grounds The roof crew has replaced the roof of the Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall Wersquove had some additional Work Days where we continued our mowing schedule inspected the emergency lights power-washed the garage and gazebo trimmed the hedges and branches at the parsonage and by the Meditation Garden removed the window AC units replaced the broken thermostat for the chapel and replaced emergency light batteries in the mechanical room We have also upgraded the kitchenette in the office and completed the renovation in the Nursery restroom A big ldquothank yourdquo to all who came and helped with the clean-up after the recent storm It was much appreciated

Sunday Communion Available for Home Delivery If you are not able to make it to church and would like to receive communion please call the office and they will arrange for communion to be delivered to you by a Deacon or a member of The Caring Ministry Team Tips to Avoid Getting the Cold and Flu Virus bull Get a flu shot The CDC recommends that people over the age of 6 months get an annual flu

shot The flu shot is given a few weeks before the flu hits and will help decrease the duration and intensity of the flu if you do get it

bull Avoid close contact Avoid close contact with people who are sick When you are sick avoid close contact with others to protect them from getting sick too

bull Stay home when you are sick If possible stay home from work school day care and errands when you are sick You will help prevent others from catching your illness

bull Cover your mouth and nose Use a tissue to cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing then drop it in the trash If you dont have a tissue cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve rather than your hands

bull Wash your hands often Washing your hands with soap and water often will help protect you from germs Use soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are great in an emergency but do not serve as a replacement for old fashioned hand washing

bull Avoid touching your eyes nose and mouth Sickness is often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes nose or mouth

bull Other ways to stay healthy Get plenty of sleep eat nutritious foods exercise regularly drink plenty of fluids manage your stress level and clean and disinfect frequently touched services

Other Vaccines to Consider Pneumonia Nearly 1 million adults get pneumonia each year For adults age 65 and older there are two different pneumonia vaccines recommended to stay healthy These two vaccines work together to provide better protection Shingles There is a new shingles vaccine recommended for adults age 50 and older that is over 90 effective at preventing this painful skin rash

If you or a family member does get the flu go and see your doctor within the first 48 to 72 hours of coming down with the flu Talk to your doctor about starting Tamiflu or Xofluza as these can decrease the duration and severity of the flu as well as prevent complications like pneumonia Push fluids like tea chicken broth or popsicles even if you do not have an appetite This will replace electrolytes and prevent dehydration caused by the fever Check your temperature Call your doctor or dial 911 right away if you arent improving or have any signs of complications like disorientation chest pain difficulty breathing or swallowing These can be signs of dehydration bronchitis or pneumonia Most at risk are the elderly children and those with chronic conditions like cancer or immune suppression The flu usually lasts about a week Consider going back to work or school when you feel strong and have been fever free for at least 24 hours

BBCrsquos HOLIDAY FAIR 2021

Thank you for making the 2021 Holiday Fair Silent Auction a huge success Thank you to everyone who served purchased and donated to make our second online Silent Auction and the 17th Annual Holiday Fair a HUGE success earning $20000 Itrsquos truly amazing what we can accomplish when our church is working together to help those in need in our community

All Fair proceeds will go to support the Homeless Prevention Council Faith Family Kitchen and Cape Cod Foster Closet

Thanks to these groups that worked so hard to make this event a success bull Silent Auction Solicitors led by Bob Lindquist with assistance from Bruce Betts Dan Eberly

Don Holm and Bud Nugent for gathering so many fabulous items bull The Tech Team ndash Michael Kemp IT professional who built an amazing website that served as

the Auction Home Page and linked seamlessly from the BBC website and App to the Auction page Michael also designed and sent those spiffy emails to the BBC lists

bull Jean Holm who ran the Auction using Greater Givingrsquos software loading over 100 items to the auction site and photographing many Jean communicated frequently to our donors and bidders and ran reports to manage the pick-up process

bull Publicity Team ndash Nicole Porter from Monomoy Social Media who worked Facebook and Instagram Sharon Kautz for Facebook postings and spotlighting the Auction in the BUZZ and Jean Holm who wrote the BBC Greater Giving and local newspaper printonline communications

bull Our Generous Donors who offered a $5000 matching donation plus several other donors who helped drive our donation total to $12000

The Holiday Fair Steering Committee operates as an overseeing body with no term of service New volunteers with a knack for visioning brainstorming new ideas organizing and planning are needed Planning for the 2022 Holiday Fair starts in June with monthly meetings through September and bi-weekly meetings in October Join us and enjoy the fellowship and sense of purpose that this church-wide local fundraiser will provide you

Svedenrsquos Spreads and Dips

As part of our Holiday Fair tradition Nancy Sveden and her Bible study will be making Svedenrsquos dips to order for $10 each There are four types and they will be ready the weekend before Thanksgiving As an added bonus Karen Moore who attends BBC and is a vendor at the Orleans Farmers Market makes home-made seeded crackers for $5 each that would go great with the spreads and dips You can order both online on our church app or in the lobby until November 7 Pick up your orders on Saturday November 20 1000 am - 200 pm or Sunday November 21 from 900 am - 100 pm Payment online in advance or upon pick- up by cash or check
