The Redeemer Reporter November 2018

Hello Redeemer

After a very busy summer and early fall filled with travel and family time, I look forward to this season when life seems to slow down a bit and our schedules become more routine. Jeff and I are empty nesters again as Hannah, our oldest, is starting her first real job in Washington DC and Ben is entering his second year of college at Villanova University.

We were blessed this Sunday to have Bishop Kristen Kuempel lead us in worship at Redeemer. Her sermon focused on God’s forgiveness of our sins and what a gift that is. We read about David, his adulterous relationship with Bathsheba, and the plan to have her husband die in battle so that the pregnant Bathsheba could become David’s wife. He does this without any apparent remorse. Then God sends the prophet Nathan , who through a parable, opens David’s eyes to the sins he has committed. By God’s grace , David is enabled to see the truth and expresses his sorrow and desperate longing for restoration to God in Psalm 51.

Like David, we are human and capable of sin. But God forgives us and when we repent “it’s like it never happened”.

Sometimes it’s the small things that trip me up - like letting a choice word fly out of my mouth when I am frustrated in traffic, or letting my anger get the best of me. I am always asking for forgiveness in those situations and strive to do better.

Sunday worship fills me with hope, helps me prepare for the week and reminds me that it is God’s grace that keeps me

Property Committee Reaches Out…

Your Property Committee is reaching out to the congregation for the names and contact information for reliable commercial building builders/remodelers. We need businesses to give us estimates on a new roof for the Fellowship/Education wing. We know we’ll need businesses that have an association with structural engineers and architects or who have in house architecture and engineering capacity. Please contact me or one of your Property Committee members if you know of a business that has a proven track record. Property committee members include: Carol Green (Council Liaison), Ed Blakeslee, Kurt Gaedeke, Fred Riddle, Larry Spencer, Martina Ngabonziza, Lee Fischer, Thom Garzone, Doug Hardin, and Laurel Simos (Chairman)

Thank you! Laurel Simos [email protected] 208.336.2329

Scott LeBoeuf Tackles Redeemer’s Back Yard

As part of Scott working toward his Eagle Scout Merit Badge, he volunteered to do some work around Redeemer. Scott took on a

particularly challenging job, which was to clean out the ditch and lawn along both the North and East sides of the back yard, take out some

volunteer nuisance trees which had grown fairly tall, and use an earth-friendly weed spray to kill the unwanted weeds. The fence line

had gotten overgrown and had not been addressed for quite a while.

Now the back yard looks fantastic!

It was a lot of hard work and it is very much appreciated!

Brian LeBoeuf supervised the work. Thank you Scott and Brian! Great job!

Quilts Blessed on

Sunday, October 7th, 2018

The Quilters appreciate the generosity of the congregation for this ministry. They are grateful for being selected as the mission of the month for two consecutive months this year. They set a goal of a hundred quilts and exceeded that by seven. The donations of money, used sheets, and material have gone to good use. They’d like to recognize a few individuals. Dannette Blakeslee for donating her mother’s Kenmore sewing machine. Jerry Smith, for servicing their machines at no cost for the last six years and donating a sewing machine cabinet. Jo Dinnel, for making a special quilt for Frank Church High school to auction off. Lastly, Shirley Gilchrist for material and an iron.

Those currently quilting are Sandy Boyington, Joy Brizee, Judi Campbell, Alice Dingeldein, Linda Ectenkamp, Willow Hahn, Marlene Isensee, Pat Lindberg, Ruth Makovsky, Mary Reid, Ellen Ribbink, Maxine Spears, and Diana White. A special thanks to, Jerry, who maintains our machines and Thrivent for sending funds to cover some of our batting. May God continue to bless our ministry and the many hands that make it possible.

The quilts were distributed as follows:

-70 to Lutheran World Relief

-20 to foster children.

-6 to Idaho City Schools

-10 to Frank Church High School.

-1 to Frank Church fundraiser.

107 quilts made & donated. (Wow!)

The Season of Advent begins

Sunday, December 2nd.

Help make our sanctuary beautiful for Christmas by ordering a poinsettia. Flowers

will be available for purchase beginning November 4th until December 16th. The

Poinsettias are red with gold foil. The cost per Poinsettia is $12.00 each. There will be one

triple white Poinsettia which will be used during Advent and in to Christmas. The cost of

this plant is $33.50 if someone would like to purchase it.

As always, your flower can be dedicated to a memory of someone, or something special in

your life. The dedications will be printed in our Christmas bulletins.

Yes, gift giving season is fast approaching! Redeemer’s council has chosen to continue the practice established in recent years. If you desire to give the pastor a monetary Christmas gift, the council requests that you offer the gift directly to the pastor. If anonymity is important to you, please seal cash in an envelope and give it to the pastor through a fellow member in the congregation.

This practice of giving will ensure the money is a true gift. Money given to the pastor from Redeemer qualifies as income, not as a gift, on this personal tax return. Thank you for understanding.

Faithfully,

Redeemer Lutheran Church Council

Naomi~Esther Circle asks the

congregation to assist us with Christmas

cookies for our shut-ins and our NA and

other groups who meet at church. If you

are willing to contribute, please have 2

dozen cookies at the church on or before

December 12th at 11:30 where we will

gather to assemble for delivery. Your

assistance is greatly appreciated by the

Circle and those who receive the cookies

which are a treat anticipated every year.

The Circle will host a brunch on that day,

December 12th, at 11:30 in the Fellowship

Hall and any church women who would like

to attend are more than welcome. Please

RSVP if you are not a member of this Circle

to Carol Green at

[email protected] so we can

insure there is enough food.

Wash , Wipe, & Wear Distribution in

October

Many Thanks to the following people who assisted in October. Katherine R., ordered diapers.

Marilyn Smith picked toilet paper.

On Thursday, Sandy W., Lori wambolt, Connie S., and Martina N. sorted diapers.

writers: Gale Faber and Julie W.

A huge thanks to church's youth who were willing to help on the Distribution Day: Audrey Wambolt, Sam and Scott Laboeuf, Cola and Leah (Gale's granddaughters) Sandrina Uwajeneza and Becky. Everyone did a fantastic job!

Many thanks to Carol Green for her donation of warm clothes. Many thanks to Fred Riddle for his donation of winter hats, and Alice Dingeldein for donating the baby blankets, and all who donated the baby clothes. Re-member, it is more blessing to give than to receive.

Because we had many clothes for men, women and children I let them take as many as they could and they were excited. a man made me laugh when he found a very good suit and he didn't even see its size he just took it fast and went outside with his wife. If you donated the suit God bless you. I got so much happiness when I

saw how God blessed the people through our giving.

Submitted by Martina Ngabonziza.

Mission of the Month for October

Help For Our Veterans

Please remember our veterans this year. We have extended the warm clothing drive for our male and female homeless veterans through November 4th.

This will allow us a little more time to fill the baskets.

Thank You! Kari Spencer

Mission of the Month November

Helping Families at Christmas

Additionally, for November we would like to help a family (or

families) enjoy Christmas. We are asking for monetary donations for this outreach. The church council will update

the congregation on the family that will receive our assistance for the holidays.

This holiday season share the joy of reading with a needy child by donating a new book to Operation Wish Book from November 4th-25th.

Over the last twenty-five years more than 340,000 books have been donated through this program in the Treasure Valley.

Types of new books needed:

Pre-school “paddle” books (cardboard pages)

Hard cover books for grades K-2

Soft cover (paperback) books for upper grades 3-12

New books will be collected in a box labeled “Operation Wishbook” in the sanctuary.

If you prefer to make a monetary donation*, please make checks payable to

“Boise Schools Foundation” and place in the collection plate during the offering.

Please contact Dannette Blakeslee (208-342-3028) if you have any questions.

*One hundred percent of the money donated goes toward the purchase of books.
