The glow of the High Holidays still is evident. Iam grateful for the hard work, logistical andspiritual that so many of you put in behind thescenes to make them inspired, uplifting,energizing. We are now in Cheshvan, the monththat is sometimes described as Mar Cheshvan—Bitter Cheshvan—because it does not have aholiday except for Shabbat.
And on the American calendar, Thanksgiving. Iam grateful that we at CKI are hosting theannual Interfaith Thanksgiving service,together with Holy Trinity Lutheran Church
The Talmud teaches us “Kol Yisraelarevim zeh la-zeh;” “All of Israel isresponsible for one another.” Each
of us is responsible, not only to each other, butto all of Israel. This responsibility extendsbeyond our congregation and extends to CKIas a whole and even to our community. Theseresponsibilities are very well represented in ourFour Pillars: Life Long Learning, EmbracingDiversity, Building Community, and MeaningfulObservance.
Life Long Learning: We are obligated to teachour children. Heather Weiser and her teachersare doing an outstanding job of that. Inaddition, our Adult Education Committee, ledby Jay Garland, is educating our adults. Severalcongregants have just completed their firstclass in Hebrew and Gale Jacoby educates all ofus with the story of her family in the Holocaust.
Embracing Diversity: Our responsibility herelies in accepting those different from ourselves.I think it would be hard to find a more diversecongregation than ours. Our congregants

Building Community: Our “perception” in thecommunity has never beenbetter. For example, this past winter weopened our doors at 2:30 in the morning toprovide temporary sanctuary to a family whowas driven from their home by a fire nextdoor to us. The congregation raised anddonated nearly $2,000 for the two familiesdispossessed by that fire. Rabbi’s involvementin the community is like something we havenot seen before. From her position on theChicago Board of Rabbis, to being a ElginPolice Chaplain, she has provided us acommunity presence of which to be proud.

Meet Robin CoyneWhere have you lived?Chicago in the Ravenswood area, West RogersPark, Lakeview, Evanston, and now SaintCharles.
A real Chicago girl, born at Michael ReeseHospital, she became one of the first womenengineers to graduate Northwestern. Robin joinedCKI after High Holidays last year.
What do you do?I am an industrial hygienist directingenvironmental health and safety.
What brought you to CKI?It is in the area and my friend Hillary broughtme with her mom. So I visited and found awelcoming, tolerant environment.
What do you like about CKI so far?People are open to friendships. It is verytolerant. Very laid back. I have not encounteredpeople who are rigid, inflexible, or prescriptiveabout rules. I like the diversity and theacceptance. Everyone doesn’t have to look thesame or believe the same or have the samebackground. We seem to meet peoplewherever they are on their Jewish journey. AndI have met people that have helped me on my
Saint John’s Bible, Holy Trinity on the summerlunch program and this service, FirstCongregational Church on the Live Love,strengthens the wider community and helps uslive out the commandment to “Love ourneighbors as ourselves.” It brings us peace.
I am grateful for our teachers and theircommitment to our students and their owncommitment to life long learning andprofessional development. On Sundaymorning, November 19, while some of yousleep in, they will be at CKI, together withHebrew School teachers from around the FoxRiver Valley, to further their skills-based trainingand make our Hebrew School not only moreeffective, but also more fun, exciting,challenging, and meaningful.
I am grateful for our staff and the peoplebehind the scenes. To Ljuban for keeping thebuilding looking good. To Susan who works hermagic in the kitchen. To Peg who smiles everyday in the office and lends her competence towhatever we ask her to do. And to Heather (andDave)—whatever I can dream up, she can find away to get it done.
I am grateful for corned beef (and turkey, theHebrew of which is Hodu, which also meansthanks!). And the Sisterhood and individualswho make sure we are fed on Friday nights andSaturday mornings.

Shabbat services on Saturday, October 14. Thefollowing is an excerpt from his sermon thefollowing day.
I had a surprise invitation yesterday morning.Out in Elgin, my former congregation, Christ theLord, has joined forces with Zion LutheranChurch, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, andCongregation Kneseth Israel, the localsynagogue, to bring to town two volumes ofthe St. John’s Bible. If you’re not familiar withthis project, it is a complete hand-lettered Bible,lavishly illustrated with beautifully painted andgilded images, the first manuscript Bible to beproduced in the 500 years since theintroduction of the printing press. The work isastonishingly beautiful. It is the creation of ateam of six scribes and countless artists, andwas commissioned by St. John’s Abbey inMinnesota. Now that it is finished, a very limitednumber of facsimile volumes are traveling theworld. The congregations Imentioned—Lutheran, Catholic, andJewish—got together and paid for two of thevolumes, the Pentateuch (first five books of theOld Testament) and Gospels, to come to Elgin,where they are on display at the library. It’s anamazing cooperative effort as Lutherans andCatholics in town are observing the 500thanniversary of the Reformation and are seekingto find ways to reconcile with one another, andas a Jewish congregation partners withChristians for the good of the neighbor.

Do you have a favorite Jewish holiday?When I was very little, it was Yom Kippurbecause I was a horrible eater—and I had anexcuse for not eating. It still is because I get tobe introspective. I like introspection. It's achance to put life into perspective.

Another Perspective
This weekend, the Pentateuch volume wascarried to Congregation Kneseth Israel,coinciding with Simchat Torah, the festivalcelebrated this weekend in which peoplerejoice in the Torah, the word of God given toGod’s people. The Torah scroll is dancedthrough the assembly with great joy. (Ourservice has a faint echo of that practice as theGospel book is processed to the center of theassembly.) Rabbi Margaret Frisch Klein sent mea Facebook message yesterday morning toalert me to the fact the volume would be therefor Saturday morning Sabbath worship, andinviting me to come join them. I quickly shavedand went to join them. The service waslong—two and a half hours—as the cycle ofreading the Torah was starting again, and thereading included the entire first portion ofGenesis, all the way from Creation up to theFlood. I was touched that Rabbi Margaret calledon me to help voice the prayers.
I was even more touched as I was invited tostay for the Kiddush and Motzi, literally, theblessings over wine and bread. “Blessed areyou, O Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, whocreates the fruit of the vine” and “Blessed areyou, O Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, whobrings forth bread from the earth.” All drink,then eat the challah, and then partake in awonderful spread of delicious foods. In manyways, it was like our coffee hour, multiplied by afactor of 10 or so. People made sure I enjoyed ashot of bourbon, then ensured that I fill a platewith lox and hummus, beautifully arrangedfresh fruit, bread pudding hot from the oven,popcorn drizzled with caramel…it was a feast,and they were gracious hosts. We sat aroundbanquet tables enjoying one another’scompany, continuing our conversation in thesweetness of Sabbath rest and peace.
At one point in the morning, the rabbi and Ihad been talking with one of the congregantsas we looked at the St. John’s Bible volume,discussing the translation of the first verses ofGenesis, where it describes God’s Spirit, God’sbreath, God’s wind—all of which are possibletranslations of the Hebrew word ruach—thatmoves over the face of the waters of Creation.We marveled a bit at the significance ofLutherans and Catholics and Jews comingtogether in fellowship and cooperation in waysthat would have been unimaginable even a fewshort years before. Rabbi Margaret pointed outthat Luther was “not so great about the Jews.”My cheeks burned a bit as I acknowledged thathe in fact said horrible things about Jews,words and attitudes that later were used injustifying the Holocaust, words that, thank God,we in the Evangelical Lutheran Church haverepudiated and asked forgiveness for.
It was amazing to see that volume of the Bible.It was even more amazing for me, though, to sitaround a table, feasting and drinking, as avisible representative of a faith that hasoppressed our Jewish sisters and brothers, and

yet, gathered around the word of God andprayer, and then around a banquet table, thosedeep wounds of the past were forgotten for themoment. And in that eating, in that drinking, Igrasped the vision of Isaiah from the passagewe just heard, of a feast that God lays out towhich all peoples are invited, a rich feastdripping with fat and marrow and flooded withrich wine, a feast at which God’s own self wipesaway the tears and pains of the past, and feedsGod’s people with extravagance.
Banquets are where it’s at in scripture, both inthe Hebrew scriptures and Christian scriptures.Eating and drinking, feasting, those are theimages of the fulfillment of God’s plan forhumanity. God is described as setting a tablefor God’s people, but it’s a table to which all areinvited, both friend and foe, because it is at thetable, eating and drinking, that it becomespossible to reconcile our differences. It is in therich feeling of being served and sated thatpeople can truly focus on those things that are“true, and honorable, and just, and pure, andpleasing, and commendable, and excellent andworthy of praise.” Our hungers can cause us toignore those things, or to struggle with oneanother for resources, to hoard for ourselvesthe best, grasping at the things we think weneed only for ourselves. But it is in wine pouredout, in bread broken and shared, that we canfind the peace and harmony that we so desire,and that God desires for us.

It would be easy for people to assume thatSisterhood will take Cheshvan off. WRONG!Since there is no Hebrew holiday this month,Sisterhood undertakes its biggest fundraiser ofthe year. That is the Corned Beef/Turkey LunchSale. As I write this, the deadline is fastapproaching. We hope that you have orderedand received some extra orders. The week ofNovember 12 will be consumed with thevarious steps required to accomplish this hugesale, and we end with a grand finale onThursday for the final pick-ups and deliveries.WE NEED YOUR HELP! If you even have anhour to spare, we will have something for youto do. Please see the schedule and see whereyou can help out. Thank you!
Within this crazy week, Sisterhood will have aworkshop/meeting on Tuesday, November 14.We will work on Corned Beef, have a briefmeeting, and continue our endeavors.Everyone is welcome.

On a beautiful, crisp Sundaymorning recently, a group of
our Men’s Club members gottogether and once again went through theannual ritual of raising our synagogue’s Sukkah.Nothing screams autumn like a bunch of guysgetting together with wrenches and powertools to build something! I know this issomething we do every year, but I never gettired of sharing laughs and ruach with myfellow Men’s Club members while carrying outthis mitzvah.
I just want to recognize all these volunteerswho participated; Ken Jacoby, Ken More, Saul
Mariasis, Ed Wolf, Dan Knopoff, Keenan Newby,Stuart Kravis, Brock Friedman, and HowieAtkins. Also, a shout-out to our resident safetyengineer, Robin Coyne, who offered us adviceand encouragement. Yasher koach to all theseguys for taking the time, not to mentiongetting up early, the day after Yom Kippur.

Jacob AndrewBrometwill becalled to the Torah as a BarMitzvah onNovember 11.
Jacob is a 7th gradestudent at PrairieMiddle School.
Jacob is in BoyScouts, and likes
doing outdoor activities including canoeing,kayaking, biking, hiking, making fires, andcamping. He plays baseball, runs track, and islearning tennis. He also loves reading andspending time with his pets.
Sharing this special occasion with Jacob are hisproud parents Dave and Liz Bromet, hisbrothers Max and Zach, and his sister Emma.
Also sharing this wonderful day are manyfamily members and friends traveling fromTennessee, Massachusetts, Connecticut, NewYork, Washington (State), Ohio, and many fromthe Chicago area!
Something that Jacob has learned from hisJewish education: “I am very proud of becoming a Bar Mitzvah. Ihad to work hard.
