the annual Commodore’s Cruise to Sarasota’s Marina Jack was a fantastically enjoyable weekend. This was the first time Nancy and I joined the Cruisers on our new powerboat and we had plenty of fun. Please take the opportunity to join this group of friendly Cruisers – you’ll have a great time. You don’t necessarily have to have a boat to participate. Most of the cruising destinations have hotel accommodations nearby, so anyone can take part in the activities, dinners and socializing with your CYC friends.

Fall weather has finally arrived and pushed out sum-mer’s heat. It is beautiful weather to get out and use your boat, and the fish are biting off the beaches. Soon, the water temps will cool down and many species will move closer in so you won’t have to run too far offshore to try catching grouper and snapper. The Spanish Mack-erel and King fish are here now right off of the beaches.

Do remember the Pineapple flag is our way to rec-ognize new members. As we are the friendliest club around, when you see a Pineapple flag, don’t hesitate to stop by and introduce yourself and welcome our newest members. We welcome you all and look forward to having you enjoy the club.

Definitely plan ahead and make reservations for dinner at the club. With our new members, and our seasonal members back in town, the dining room will be getting busier.

Our annual meeting is Saturday, Nov. 11. Come hear what has transpired at the club this year and welcome the newly elected slate of officers and directors for the coming year.

We look forward to seeing you all at the club in November.

the 2017 Long-Term Planning Committee – Amie Crosby, Dave Yoder, PC Hoyt Nichols and PC Tim Roberts – presented the 2017 long-term plan to the Board of Directors at the October Board meeting. This year the committee focused on presenting a Strategic Plan rather than making suggestions on how to im-prove the club experience. The Strategic Plan consists of five categories with each category having a goal. Each of the goals has tasks assigned to groups within our club’s structure to accomplish either in the short, medium, or long term defined as one to five years. The Board of Directors unanimously approved the Strategic Plan and will review progress quarterly on the assigned tasks. Those categories are:

n Financial Sustainabilityn Club Assetsn Membershipn Operations and Managementn Programs and ActivitiesThe Long-Term Planning Committee also thanks all

the Standing Committee Chairs for their help in com-pleting this Strategic Plan and especially thank Board Secretary Mary Kay Delk for her guidance and counsel throughout the process.

Please feel free to stop by the Club office to review the Strategic Plan.

the SePtemBeR Waterside meeting took place on September 27th, and efforts continued in the CYC Marina with dock maintenance after Hurricane Irma. Kudos to Ress Marine and Dan for quickly replacing pilings and repairing our docks. We are moving forward on Bow Chasers’ request for re-pairs/upgrades to prams and Sunfish.

We’re also working with the Long-Term Planning Committee on future marina replacement and with Finance Committee and the Board of Directors con-cerning slip fees and shore power for slip holders and transients in the New Year. The next Waterside meet-ing will take place on Wed., Nov. 29th at 6 p.m.

We are continuing with CYC Sunset Cruises, with a few recent weather cancellations. The last two for 2017 are planned for November 4th and December 30th, which will be a bit earlier with the end of Daylight Savings Time on Nov. 5th. Skippers of both power and sailboats will get underway from the CYC marina about an hour before sunset, with a post-sunset informal no-host gathering at the Tiki. We will send out more information by e-mail; skippers please let Gerard Kane at [email protected] and me (info below) know if you plan to cruise or if you want more information.

nautical trivia of the month: The an-swer to last month’s trivia contest was Pilar, the name of Ernest Hemingway’s boat. The winner was Todd and Amie Crosby, so I owe them a drink at the Tiki. Thanks for all the replies last month; we set a record!

For this month, the USS Constitution returned to the waters of Boston Harbor on July 23, 2017 after a two-year restoration in Charlestown Navy Yard. What is the enduring nickname for the USS Constitution?

Text or e-mail the correct answer to me; the fourth correct answer will get a drink on my ac-count at the Tiki.

It is very clear that our members are an important part of this outstand-ing growth by encouraging their family and friends to join. I also want to remind all members that the Membership Appreciation Party will be held on Sunday, Nov 5th at the Dry Dock. We hope to see you there for a fun event.

Sailing Activities

the month of October may have come in on a storm but it is going out on the “fair winds” that have ushered in CYC’s full recovery from Hurricane Irma and many special events that continued our long tradition of outstanding activity on the water.

For our Intrepid youth and adult sailors, October marked the return of Saturday and after-school sailing classes. IRF-SA Program Director, Ned Covel, and his dedicated team have ensured that all boats and equipment are in “Bristol condition” and have welcomed enthusiastic students to what promises to be a fun and safe fall sailing season.

Hurricane Irma may have forced us to cancel Tania Aebi’s visit to CYC but that did not stop the world-famous solo cir-cumnavigator from rescheduling with us for October 4th, and that event featured a standing room only crowd who were treated to Tania’s “awesome” presentation about her record setting voyage which took place from 1985-1987. Tania be-came the first woman and youngest person to complete a solo circumnavigation which she accomplished on her sailboat, Varuna, a Contessa 26. Following her presentation, Tania

met with attendees and signed copies of her bestselling book, Maiden Voyage. This was truly a memorable evening and we are grateful to Tania for making it happen.

From world-class sailors, we moved on to “world-class pets” as we celebrated our annual Blessing of Animals on Sunday October 8th. Once again, we had a record-setting number of humans and pets in attendance, each of whom witnessed to our love for the wonderful ties that bind us together as human beings and “creatures both great and small!” Following the blessings, we were rewarded with several demonstrations by talented pets whose training and “fashionable dress” were greeted by enthusiastic applause.

No doubt about it, we are looking to the month of November with so very much to be thankful for! May the month of Thanksgiving bring continued blessings to you and those you love, fair winds to our sailors, happy engines to our power-boaters, and God’s gifts of joy and peace to all our members and staff.

Till then, be safe….stay well!Wishing you “fair winds” and many blessingsFather Bob [email protected], (727) 510-6153

If you enjoy:l Sailingl Imbibingl Dining l Telling sea storiesl Cruising in company with other sailboatsWe’re gathering in the Grill on the 4th Wednesday of each

month 6:30 p.m. for drinks and blather, 7 p.m. for dinner.Next Sailors’ Table will be Wed., November 29.

Past Commodore Hoyt Nichols, third from left, has been elected and installed as 1st Vice President of District 8 of the International Order of the Blue Gavel District. With PC Nichols, from left, are 2nd Vice President, Heather Wood of Coral Ridge Yacht Club; District 8 Director Karen Shea of Gulf Harbors Yacht Club; PC Nichols; President Elect Joe Dombrowski of Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club; and President Doug Chase of Vero Beach Yacht Club. The past-commodores association held its fall meeting and change of watch in October at Vero Beach Yacht Club.

Long-time member Patricia A. Dowling, who was the driving force behind at least two important CYC activities, died on Sept. 28. We will miss the lovingly deft way she moderated discussions during the monthly Book Club meetings, as well as her strong commitment to both the U.S. Marines and children in need, which came together in our annual Toys for Tots campaign, always spearheaded by Pat.

She wrote for the Compass every month for many, many years – possibly longer than any other columnist – and was more than dili-gent about her deadlines, though sometimes she was flummoxed by a new computer or email server. She was a good friend, a strong supporter and the person you’d always want in your corner.

Born in Queens, N.Y., Pat held a Master’s degree in psychiatric social work from Adelphi University, where she was also an adjunct professor. She had a fulfilling career as a social worker for Sachem Schools on Long Island, N.Y., and she was a family therapist in pri-vate practice. She held many supervisory and leadership positions in local town, county and New York State social work organizations.

In addition to her contributions to CYC, she also volunteered as a grief counselor at St. Brendan’s Catholic Church.

An avid sailor, she and her husband enjoyed many years of blue water adventures as well as transcontinental RV trips. She is survived by her devoted husband of 67 years, Leslie; her daugh-ter, Andrea (husband, Ron) of Coral Springs, Fla.; son, Jeffrey (wife, Melanie); and grandsons, Kristofer, Spencer, and Tristan, all of Duxbury, Mass.

thiS yeaR’S Commodore’s Cruise to Marina Jack in Sarasota started on Thurs., Oct. 12 for five of our boating cruisers. After settling in, they took all-electric free rides to D’Corato’s, a small Italian restaurant in downtown Sarasota, where the chef is the owner/mother and the wait staff is the son and an aunt. All the pasta and sauces are made fresh daily. Service and food was spectacular!

Friday was a day to explore Sarasota while waiting on the other CYC boaters to arrive. Friday evening was our traditional dock party, where cruisers provided appetizers and the hosts (the Milams and the Cardosis) provided adult beverages. About 30 cruisers sat around wearing their CYC 2017 Cruiser shirts, grazing on delicious appetizers and enjoying fine wine and cock-tails. The fun and laughter lasted until about midnight. It was good to be able to sleep in Saturday morning.

Saturday morning cruisers ate on their boats or took a short walk downtown where there is an array of wonderful breakfast choices. The farmers’ market was going on which provided good food grazing and lots of crafts to buy. You know, those are the things you buy and then wonder later, “why did I buy that?” It was a fun, beautiful day. The weather could not have been more perfect.

Saturday night: the real reason we go on these trips, the Saturday night dinner dance. The room was decorated in a nautical theme. Kathy Milam and Phyllis Cardosi did our

event planning and decorating. Great job, Kathy and Phyllis!! This year we had more commodores on this cruise than ever before. We had Commodores De Voss, Milam, Cardosi and Rear Commodore Beauchamp. There was chicken, steak or fish with all the trimmings. The marina chef knocked it out of the park on the food. All the food was prepared just per-fectly! A dance would not be complete without the GREAT JR playing music for us. JR always plays to the crowd and gets everyone up dancing. He did a spectacular job. Everyone danced and drank and ate the night away.

Sunday morning the hosts provided a continental breakfast, including apple fritters (for Tommy Meyer) on the dock. Nothing like a full stomach for the ride home. Everyone departed and arrived home safely. Another wonderful Cruisers trip. You do NOT need to own a boat to enjoy these trips. Come to the next Cruisers meeting to learn more.

the gullS are in organizational flight getting ready for a new year.

We will have a meeting on December 6th at 11:00 a.m. in the Gulls Nest to set our schedule for next year. We would like to have a fashion show and luncheon in April and a fashion show with our Boatique at a luncheon in November. To make this and all the other activities work we need volunteers.

Please consider becoming an active Gull. We would like to bring back our programs but we need support for this to work.

Dues for 2018 will still only be $15.00. Watch for dues forms and notices around the first of the year.

BREAKFAST with SANTA!! If you have children, grandchildren, neighbors or fledgling gulls, make sure you make your reservations to come see Santa on Satur-day, December 16th at 9 a.m. The pancake man will be here to flip his wonderful Christmas pancakes as well as the balloon man with his great creations.

Watch for upcoming notifications about our restructuring.

As we look forward to the rest of 2017, we are organiz-ing a list of proposed projects to improve the Club. We would love your input on ideas to improve the facility and the operations. The committee will meet on Tues., Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. in the board room. Please join us for a short (I promise) meeting and then stay for dinner!See you at the Club!

Gage Crawford, our indefatigable Tiki Bartender has been with CYC since September 2013, providing super-extraor-dinary service to members on weekends and evenings, in boiling heat and blowing cold, often as a one-man show! He hails from New England – some of you might remember his mother Robin, who was once CYC’s assistant manager. Gage is studying acting (and not just with our members) and recently returned from a well-deserved vacation an engaged man! Why not stop in soon and congratulate him?
