One Great Thing That’s Come To An End Normally, when one hears that expression, it’s followed by disappointment and maybe even sadness. While many of us are disappointed that we’ll no longer have Jack’s Paint place, the premier paint and collision company at our disposal, we’re cer-tainly not saddened.

Since 1983 Jack’s Paint Place, owned and operated by the Holbrook family, including Jack, Candy, Jeff and John Holbrook, has been the go-to place for most of Bexar and surrounding counties. Mention Jack’s to your insurance company after an accident and they don’t even recommend going anywhere else. I personally have enjoyed first class service from Jack’s and relied on them for any and all collision needs.

Why aren’t we saddened by the recent closing of Jack’s? Well, because the Holbrook family aren’t just a business to the Blue-bonnet Miata Club, they’re family to the club as well. After the business has been their lives for so long, the family is retiring. So, while Jack and Candy Holbrook have been retired for the last several years, now Jeff Holbrook and his wife Diane can re-tire as well. And trust me, it’s a well deserved retirement indeed.

Jack’s will be sorely missed, not only for the obvious reasons like collision work and complete paint needs, but the Holbrook family hosted many years of our club’s Tech Days. Amateur mechanics (club members) trolling about all day, borrowing tools from Jack’s professionals, utilizing all of the lifts, you name it, we were graciously allowed to make that our home garage for a day each year.

Don’t count the Holbrook’s out regarding club. Jeff still takes charge of our quarterly Texas trash pick up and Jack and Candy have graciously allowed us to have our occasional Star Party at their hill country hilltop home, too!

So, we say, not goodbye, but a huge thanks to all the Holbrook's for everything they’ve done and been there for us over the years! We wish you well in this new phase of your lives!

Velocity Read With the upcoming elections ( o ur clubs, not the national debacle ) , I thought it was a good time to laud our current president. Mark Hungerman has been exemplary in his job, don't you think? Selfless, helpful and so easy to get along with. He's been a pleasure for the last two years. I personally have been the beneficiary of his assistance on many of my events and he never asks anything in return. I'll close this subject by saying a big THANKS to Mark! A job well done! With cooler weather upon us, many of us will be more eager to take to the roads. And the calendar offers lots of fun options, too! A last minute run to Coopers BBQ coming in a few days and who doesn't like Cooper's??? A return to the South Texas Maize, the big State-wide event in the Houston area, and all that is just November! December has the popular Camp Verde Christmas Open House the day of our Christmas party. So, plan to pack for the Christmas Party trip and include Camp Verde in that same trip! The entire inventory at Camp Verde is on sale that day! Perfect for getting that last minute gift for our party! December wraps up with a Christmas Lights run and Stephanie never disappoints with elaborate displays! So, get out those windbreakers you were fortunate enough to get for the Head for the Mountains event and we'll see you all out on the open roads!

There were two rest stops, the first being the Texas Hill Country Olive Company, which is a fun place to taste olive oils and all type of infused balsamic vinegars – our taste buds were ready!

The second rest stop was a regular convenience store/gas station. The run was a total of approximately 82 miles with a variety of roads. Then we went on to Treaty Oaks Distilling north of Dripping Springs . This was our final destination where we had lunch and enjoyed some tasting of their products.

What could be better than being in the Hill Country on a perfect cloudless fall Friday; sipping wine, relaxing outside with a panoramic scenic Hill Country view and enjoying a picnic lunch with friends?

On Friday, October 21, 2016, we met at the Valero on 46 near 281. We took a leisurely drive down 46 to FM3159, then a slightly spirited run up 311 to Rebecca Creek Road to 281 to 1623 in Blanco to the winery.

David, our host, took us on a tour of the winery. After the tour, we had a private wine tasting in a room reserved especially for our club.

Everyone brought a picnic lunch and we sat outside for several hours enjoying the fellowship, the food, the view and the great weather.

Here we go.

It all started in 2014. Freda and I watch Wheel of Fortune every day and I was solv-ing puzzles right and left. Freda says "You should try and get on the show." A few months later the WOF Winnebago shows up looking for contestants. I go down there and, luck of the draw, I get my name drawn and make in into the process. However, the date they had selected to come back to SA for the audition process was the week we were in Costa Rica, so I couldn't make it. I did call them and let them know I'd be out of the country. They kept my info active to try and get me in at a later date.

Months pass and I've just relented and fig-ured if it happens it happens. Out of the blue, I get an e-mail that they are coming to Oklahoma City for an audition. Freda and I head up there and I go through the proc-ess. They tell the whole room that if you get a letter in two weeks you are going on the show, and I got a letter. I woke the whole town of Ruidoso when I let the group travel-ling to Utah know!!

Time goes by and they let me know when the taping will be. We schedule our flight to leave July 28th and tape the 29th. South-west has a brain fart, and our flight gets can-celled!!!! I call one of the producers and he says no problem. This is old hat for them, so he re-schedules me to come out Aug 11th.

We arrive and go through all the legal stuff, and then they start training us on how to play Wheel. While waiting around, Vanna comes through the group and touches my shoul-der!! I'll never wash this coat again!

The taping didn't take long, and before you know it, it's in the books. Also, this is a One and Done, so no repeat trips like Jeopardy.

All in all, it was a fun trip. I didn't go to the final round, but I made some money. Ask me when you see this and I'll tell you how much!

The original Adopt-a-Highway program began right here in Texas in 1985. Since then, it’s grown into a nationally and internationally recognized litter-prevention effort, saving taxpayers’ dollars and keeping our rights of way clean.

For years, our own Jeff Holbrook has organized our club’s participation in this much needed program. Quarterly, volunteers from our club show up to help Jeff in this worthy cause.

Thanks, Jeff!

On Wednesday, October 19, the Miata Ladies Group met at the home of Marilyn Hamilton. Everyone had a great time visiting, eating and play-ing Bunco. It was a fun evening filled with lots of laughter. The newly formed Miata Ladies Group plans to have a number of events in the coming months. Miata Ladies upcoming events: Jerry and Kay Todd have agreed to take us behind the scenes of the San Antonio Zoo. They volunteer at the zoo. The date is Friday Novem-ber the 18th. Please meet at the zoo entrance at 9:30 AM . The will lead a tour for about an hour and then we can roam the zoo for about another hour and then head to lunch at location to be determined. December looks like we may be meeting in Boerne for a day of Christmas shopping on December 9th. Late shoppers find the best bar-gains. Time to be announced later.

January is going to be a new experience for most of you, I think. We will become proper English Ladies and will be having high tea. Dress up, including hats and some may wear gloves. It will be on January 16th so hopefully those who work will also be able to attend as it is Martin Luther King Day. Additional info to be announced later.
