THE FIELD MARSHAL SHFJ MANEKSHAW LECTURE
In the 12th edition of The Field Marshal SHFJ
Manekshaw lecture held on 3rd October 2015,
Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies was
privileged to host one of the most revered
personalities in the domain of international
business, Mr. Adi Godrej, Chairman of The
Godrej Group. It was only fitting to have Mr.
Godrej deliver his thoughts since the topic of the
lecture was Leadership. His opinions were
genuinely apprising for everyone present in the
gathering. He elaborated that being a passionate
leader involves establishing a clear mission and
a path during the tough times, he accurately
mentioned that dynamism is again a critical
aspect of a pertinent leader as he/she should be
open to new ideas at every juncture and as the
saying goes 'learning never ends', it stands true
for a leader too, knowledge is never enough and
a good leader must always be open to learning.
According to the esteemed corporate stalwart,
leadership is about open and honest
communication, adhering to the truth no matter
how difficult it may be to sustain. Ultimately
you will not have to remember who you lied to
or cheated on. An aspiring leader should never
settle, standards should continuously be elevated
and should be targeted to be met. A leader
should be equipped to conquer his/her fear, he
should fight the voice inside that sparks fear
within, fear of failure, fear of others being more
talented or more competent.
It is critical to preserve the intrinsic value
because ultimately that is what glows to be the
distinguishing factor in a person. A leader must
learn to make his vocation and definitely must
have a mutually enriching relationship with the
profession he is involved in. Mr. Godrej very
successfully blended in his talk with the
occasion and effectively linked Field Marshal
Sam Manekshaw's 1971 example of leadership
and concluded that 'Leadership' is a virtue that is
required in every walk of life.

360 DEGREE LECTURE SERIES
The main purpose of 360 degree lecture series is
to enhance the thinking abilities of our Student
Managers and widen their scope of knowledge
through a series of motivating talks by
prominent personalities across different sectors
in our very own campus. In the academic year
2015-2016, Mr. Rahul Bose was invited as a
guest lecturer on 12th August 2015 to enlighten
the student managers of SIMS about the
leadership lessons he learnt in his field of
cinema, rugby and from being a social activist.
The lecture started with Rahul Bose giving a
brief description about his NGO “The
Foundation”. He spoke of a free India where
every citizen mattered and would be cherished
by the state regardless of class, caste or religion.
He believes in reaching out to the ones who have
been neglected and empowering them with tools
of education and helping them find their inner
strength. Further, he spoke about how facing
failure in life has taught him more about
leadership than success. He mentioned how
having faced rejection in his career has taught
him some of the most important lessons of life.
Recalling the time when he got recognition for
his work in his first film ‘English, August’ at the
Toronto film festival, the incident made him
firmly believe that creativity stems from a place
of turbulence and pain. Despite the harsh
conditions he faced during his shoot in
Narsipatnam in the scorching heat in July 1993,
he was able to deliver a remarkable
performance. He said, for a good leader it is
essential to have a vision, to have a direction of
where and how to achieve the final outcome. He
went on to say that we should never hesitate to
accept our ignorance on various aspects that we
face in our daily lives; rather we should transfer
power to the hands of people and learn from
their constructive criticism. His inspiring talk
left a deep impression on the young minds and
the student managers will consistently strive to
imbibe the useful insights in their lives.

In the month of September, the MBA batch of
2015-17 was addressed by the eminent banker-
turned-politician Ms. Meera Sanyal on 8th
September, 2015. She until recently was
heading the banking giant Royal Bank of
Scotland. Ms. Sanyal initiated her talk in a very
spontaneous manner getting the audience to first
point out the facets that they would like to have
further insights on. She highlighted a
fundamental ideal that all of us are essentially
the product of our roots and hence the defense
background that we hail from teaches us to land
on our feet. Recounting an anecdote from her
MBA days, she spoke of the struggle she went
through while appearing for several rounds of
scholarship interviews in preparation to go to
INSEAD, Paris whilst studying at IIM-Calcutta.
This was also the moment she realized the
importance of Indian family values and her
family played a crucial role in supporting her
through her struggles in this difficult time. Ms.
Sanyal spoke about the importance of a belief
that each one of us can make a difference in a
democracy and urged the student managers to
believe that each one of them has the power to
make a difference. She left the audience with a
very inspiring thought that she would fight every
election and one day somebody like her would
win and change the entire structure of the
political system in our country.

untested waters, pitting them against fierce rivals

members of the student council and is a
vigorous, challenging and exciting way to
introduce the student managers to the MBA
program giving them a sense of the organized
chaos and the sea of opportunities the college
tosses the Simsites into. A typical morning
would pan out in this manner - multiple alarms
setting off all within the space of a few minutes
of each other at 5.30 a.m. to make it for the 5:45
a.m. fall in. Everyone jostles with one another to
brush in their zombied state because no one
wants to miss out on the amazing morning

activities were lined up for them for the whole
day. To make the day truly special, clothes and
chocolates were distributed to them.
Some of the activities that are planned for the
upcoming month include a tree plantation drive

CONFERO – DEBATING CLUB
Confero conducted a presidential style debate in
the month of August in which participants had
to come prepared both for and against the topic
Ban on pornography- a responsible step or a
radical measure. After a grilling first round
which tested the wits, communication skills,
research skills and analytical abilities of the
contestants, 8 participants were shortlisted for
the final round. The final showdown was
witnessed by the entire junior batch. The final
round was a British parliamentary style debate
in which there were two sides- a government
and an opposition. Each side consisted of 4
positions. The government had the prime
minister, deputy prime minister, member of
government and government whip. The
opposition consisted of the leader of opposition,
deputy of opposition, member of opposition and
opposition whip.
Each member had a specific role to play. The
topic was given two days prior to the event. The
topic was “The house believes that polygamy
should be legalized”. The roles were given to
the participants on the day of the event. Judges
for the event were Dr Jaya Chitranshi and Mr
Quresh Moochala, both members of faculty of
SIMS itself. Two members of the senior confero
team- Prannav Sood and Anurag Raj also
assisted in judging the event. The parameters
used to judge the contestants were – relevance of
content, role played in the debate, ability to ask
questions and answer the questions put forward
by the judges etc. After a fierce battle, the top 5
contestants were chosen for the Confero team,
with the winner being Ms Radhika Mahalanobis
and the runner up being Mr Divyanshu Joshi.
The event was a great success with the audience
enjoying it as much as the participants and the
judges.

Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala was
celebrated in the Malayalam month of Chingam
(Aug – Sep) with much pomp and splendor in
the college premises. On this auspicious day, the
central dome of the college was decorated by a
breathtaking Pookkalam..Following the lighting
of the lamp was a witty and entertaining speech
by our very own Iyer Sir. The afternoon saw
cultural performances such as the folk dances,
singing and a skit depicting the origin and the
significance of Onam. The icing on the cake was
the Onam Sadhya, the feast prepared during
Onam consisting of pure vegetarian dishes
served on a banana leaf by the students of the
Keralite community. It was truly an experience
for everyone in college be it a Malayali or a non
Malayali.
5th September i.e. Teachers Day marked the
127th birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
and was a culturally vibrant day at SIMS. It was
an exemplary blend of fun with an element of
enlightenment. Starting from compulsive
activities like involving our faculty in games to
the cultural staging including performances by
Sur and Vibes, the day was an impeccable one
where everyone underwent a day distinct in
itself which will definitely be engraved in the
minds of the SIMS family for months to follow.
Ganesh Utsav celebrations were organized on
campus on the 17th and 18th of September,

EDITORIAL AND MEDIA RELATIONS CELL
The Editorial and Media Relations Cell is the
voice of SIMS. It provides the institute with
corporate and media exposure, bringing the
students to the forefront of the latest happenings
in the business world. It manages the social
media channels like Facebook, Twitter and
YouTube which help connect SIMS with the
corporate world. It conceptualizes, creates and
reviews the in-house monthly newsletter ‘SIMS
Express’.
With consistent efforts the cell has managed to
make a mark on all the major social media
platforms and also our very own blog
www.simswayoflife.wordpress.com. However,
there was a need to showcase the everyday life
of SIMS and to highlight the daily happenings
right from the heart of the college. Be it the daily
classes, guest lectures, fun events or just the
happy faces of our SIMSites. The cell thought of
putting forth all this and much more through
curated pictures and rich visual imagery to
promote brand SIMS. With this thought and a lot
of excitement, SIMS made its debut on another
social media platform Instagram and this move
was met with a very enthusiastic response as the
official account gathered over a 100 followers in
a very short span of time.
It is not often that you can manage to engage a
very young, restless audience of 20-somethings
for over 90 minutes. But the MBA batch of
2015-17 was fortunate to be part of an
interactive and riveting session, the first guest
lecture organized by the Editorial and Media
Relations Cell on 23rd September 2015, where
TED speaker, United Nations Young Change
maker speaker and the pioneer behind a
wonderful initiative Project Fuel, Deepak
Ramola shared various anecdotes from his life
and his teaching journey with much enthusiasm.
He spoke about his foray into this sphere and
more so about his passion – meeting different
people and sharing their life lessons.
The Cell also submitted a report on the sessions
of the International Research Conference
conducted at SIU, Lavale on 10th October 2015.
In addition, there was a report prepared on the
NHRDN workshop on HR Analytics conducted
at SIMS too.
The Facebook page acts a point of contact with
prospective students and is highly effective for
query handling. The Editorial Cell essentially
handles all external and internal communication
of SIMS besides the coverage of all events and
guest lectures conducted by the other cells and
clubs of the institute.
The Editorial and Media Relations Cell believes
in continually creating and adding value to the
brand that is SIMS for all stakeholders
concerned.
