Pastor Mary Anne’s Message …
Roses and rockets how are they similar? Well for starters,
they are both extraordinary parts of God’s creation! I love
roses and nothing can compare to a real rose. Each type is
unique in color and shape and fragrance, and we cannot duplicate them our-
selves try as we might. God created roses for our pure delight and pleasure!
But they are high maintenance requiring great attention by their tenders, and
they do seem prone to many diseases, insects and maladies. And we cannot forget
that they also bear thorns that are piercing and painful!
And rocket ships? Wow, they are fierce, yet delicate machines embodying the tech-
nologies of science and engineering manifesting in a mighty blast of energy! They are
amazing to watch take off and we rely on them to deliver payloads, satellites, and in-
formation to space, the “final frontier”! The God-given intellect given to humans that
can be used to explore outer space is amazing! But rockets are also high maintenance;
even a tiny mistake can lead to failure as evidenced last month in a rocket launch of
supplies for the International Space Station. And rockets can also be used for destruc-
tion; they can bear their own thorns.
We have glimpses of the divine wonder and love of God constantly in our lives, but
we are often too busy or preoccupied to see or sense it. We should take time to smell
the roses, bask in the glorious colors of a sunset, gaze at the night sky lit with stars,
satellites and planes, and all the wonders of God’s love. And yes sometimes we have
to work through thorns, maladies and our mistakes to see God’s wonders at their fin-
est.
We are to care for God’s creation for sometimes the most beautiful facets are delicate
and the hardest to maintain. This is work and stewardship on our parts to maintain
the beauty of this world that God created for us to keep.
As we celebrate the harvest time and the holiday of Thanksgiving let us never forget
to give thanks to God for the hardy and delicate, for the blooms and the thorns, for
human talents and intellects and to ask for his guidance in all parts of life:
For the Beauty of the Earth, for the Beauty of the Skies;
For the Love which from our birth, over and around us Lies. Christ, our God, to you we raise, this our Sacrifice of Praise.
Hymn #879 ELW

Blue Christmas Service
Here at Concordia December 9th at 7PM
Sometimes the joy of Christmas is overshadowed by the darkness
of illness, loss, loneliness, commercialism of grief.
The “Light of Christmas —A Blue Christmas Service” is a meditative ser-
vice for all those experiencing loss or darkness, or who just want to fo-
cus on the contemplative side of Christmas.

What a wonderful surprise this was that I was honored for my organ
ministry at Concordia! I treasure every year that I have served. I ap-
preciated the special tribute by Pastor Mary Anne for all her special
prayers and caring for me. Thank you for the beautiful red roses and
special decorated cake. Thank you for the very special gift to the
Caring Star Quilts who presented Bob and me with our own specially
