Some thoughts on some current activities…….
All about transition…… As you know, our production mix is moving to increased demand for CVT. Starting from 15 model year, the very popular CRV will be the latest to add the CVT to its drivetrain. To satisfy this demand, over the last several months, many HTM associates have been preparing Assembly new line 4. Essentially, all aspects will transition from Assembly line 1 to line 4.
I want to thank all associates that have been involved in this preparation and transition. Assembly associates have been rotating between line 1 and line 4, learning and fine-tuning their line 4 processes while maintaining current line 1 responsibility. As of this writing, we have completed the transition, achieved our ramp up schedule, and run rate and quality performance are achieving plan. This is a direct result of your efforts, so please take a moment to reflect on your accomplishment. And again, thank you for your dedication towards customer satisfaction.
And what about Assembly line 1? ....... As discussed above, line 1 finished production at the end of September.
This line has been an HTM fixture, producing transmissions for almost 20 years. Line 1 has produced transmissions for popular models Accord, Civic, Element, and CRV.
Line 1 may not lay idle for too long. Perhaps it may be modified and renovated for some of our future product line up. Stay tuned.
Industry update……. Sales results through October 2014. The U.S. market continues to remain strong, at a 16.5 million average annual sales rate. American Honda sales results were +5.6% for the month and +1% year to date, as compared to October 2013. Best sellers in top 10 are CRV (no. 5), Accord (no. 6) and Civic (no. 10) . Inventory of Accord L4 (equipped with CVT) is at 64 days, CRV (CVT) is at 50 days and Accord V6 (6AT) at 86 days (ideal level is between 45 ~60 days). Next month, we will see sales results for the new TLX all wheel drive model, equipped with HTM built, all new i-VTM4 Rear Differential and Front Transfer.
And in closing, the Holiday season is approaching quickly. I wish you and your family a safe and enjoyable Holiday. Best regards to all!

2014 HTM Technical Festival
The Technical Festival is a Honda Worldwide activity. The purpose is to motivate and challenge the development of technical themes for improvement. These themes are then shared regionally and globally with the goal of expanding the theme benefit. HTM completed a total of 11 themes in 2014, with 20 associates participating. Themes were presented and evaluated by Koji Suzuki, Gary Hand, Greg Dawson, Keith Bergman, & Dave Schmitt. The Top 3 themes then moved on to the North American Event on September 23rd & 24th, at MAP. Evaluators awarded a “Best of the Best” trophy to the ALMC team of Dan Sokolow & Yohei Kamiya. Dan & Yohei were selected to share their theme in Japan for the Global Tech Fest.
HTM was awarded the Silver “Creating & Embracing Technical Excellence” trophy. These trophies are awarded to Honda facilities based on their previous year’s themes and embracing themes from other plants.
Congratulations to all those who participated.

HTM goal – team competition to recognize and encourage
the implementation of innovative ergonomic
countermeasure activities and ergonomic program
improvement initiatives.
The internationally recognized Ergo Cup® competition,
sponsored by the Applied Ergonomics Center of North
Carolina State University and presented by IIE, provides
an exciting opportunity for companies to highlight their
successful ergonomic solutions.
Any organization that can demonstrate an effective
ergonomics solution or education initiative within the last
24 months is eligible to compete.
The general theme across all Ergo Cup categories is
innovation.
What is the Ergo Cup®?
All HTM associates are encouraged to enter their ergonomics improvement activity/ projects for the 2015 Ergo Cup competition.
Ergonomic Projects can be an effective ergonomics solution / countermeasure or education initiative within the last 24 months to be eligible.
"Ergo Cup“ provides an exciting opportunity for associate / teams to highlight their successful ergonomic solutions.
Participating in HTM’s Ergo Cup Activity provides associates with a forum to showcase ergonomic countermeasure projects, meet others involved in solving ergonomic concerns and share countermeasure activities with associates from other departments.
The winning team will submit application to The Applied Ergonomic Conference to potentially represent HTM during the next international Ergo Cup competition.
Projects / Activity will be divided into three categories:
•Team Workplace Solutions – ergonomic countermeasure activities implemented by production associates.
•Engineer Driven Workplace Solutions – ergonomic countermeasure activities implemented by engineer /technical staff and other support members and/or by safety/ergonomics representatives.
•Ergonomic Program Improvement Initiative– innovative methods of implementing the various elements of the company’s ergonomic program, leading to enhancement of associate awareness and skills in ergonomics, which in turn leads to the improvement of the ergonomic conditions in the workplace.
If you have any questions regarding the HTM Ergo Cup Activity, please contact Jerry Cline, Plant Safety, at extension 63903 or your department S-Group member.
Project Summary:
• Deburr Dynasty saw a No Good situation of our manual deburr process. We made a prototype and tested it out.
It worked, but had room for improvement, so we rotated the “Plan Do Check Action” activity. The angle of attack to
the grinder was optimized and a protection shield was added. The deburr holder eliminated both twisting of forearms
and bent wrist all together, while increasing the production speed by 25%. This holder improved associate comfort
and ergonomics while lowering potential scrap rate. Twisting forearms and bent wrist went from red to green
Ergonomic judgment situations.

Project Summary:
• HTM ALMC built and installed a fixture that holds the inspection part in a proper position for the inspector to perform their checks which prevents back, neck or arm strain. The inspection fixture eliminated the previous method of having to lift the part weighing approximately 25 lbs. and maneuver the awkward part around multiple times during their check. It also improved the safety by reducing the risk of part falling and causing injury to an associate. The fixture has cut time off the inspection check by 15 minutes per part checked.

Project Summary:
• With the introduction of New Model 5L9 on Transfer Line, certain parts of the ring gear posed an ergonomic
risk. The new ring gear is 9mm shorter than previous model, causing difficulty with pinch/grip for ergo, as well as
overall handling of the gear.
• Worked with Engineering to design a hand fixture that assists in the handling of the gear. You simply depress
the button on the fixture, which fits the inner diameter of the gear, and then hold the fixture to comfortably
lift the gear.

The
The HTM Open House was held on Saturday, October 25, 2014, along with Marysville, ELP, Anna, and
EGA Facilities. Associates and their guests had the opportunity to take self-guided plant tours, take
part in fun-filled games and activities and enjoy light refreshments at each of the facilities.
The event allowed associates to not only show off their own plant, but also provides the opportunity
to see other Honda plants they may have never seen before.
