AGNI (Action for Good Governance &Networking In India) organized a ‘MeetYour Members Of Parliament’ meetingon Sunday, 16th November 2014 at theApostolic Carmel High School, attract-ing a crowd of around 500 people.

Mumbai has six MPs, all of whom wereinvited – but three responded and camefor this meeting: - Poonam Mahajan (Mumbai North Cen-tral)- Rahul Shewale (Mumbai South Central)- Arvind Sawant (Mumbai South)

Mr. Sukhtankar, Chairman of AGNI,presided over the meeting and AGNITrustee Shyama Kulkarni conducted themeeting. At first, the three MPs ad-dressed the audience on ‘Their Vision forMumbai – and their plan of action tomake Mumbai a World Class City’. WhilePoonam Mahajan was a first time electedrepresentative, the other two sharedtheir experiences of several years. How-ever, she was open to suggestions andpromised that our concerns would beconveyed to the Parliamentary AffairsMinister; to be placed on the floor of theHouse.

After these speeches, there was an ex-cellent interactive question-answer ses-sion. Subjects that fall under the CentralGovernment’s jurisdiction, like railways, environment, women’s reservation bill, infrastructure, women safety, etc.; had

questions based on them – and all threeMPs replied in a positive manner.

After being asked about accidentshappening on our railway lines and lackof emergency facilities at stations, theyassured us that more Foot Over Bridges(FOBs) would be built and ambulanceswould be placed at most stations. Fi-nance for this would come from theMPLAD Funds, which is Rs 5 Crore peryear. We also requested them to speak tothe Railway Minister, Mr. Suresh Prabhu,a Mumbaikar and ensure that pendingprojects get finished in a time-boundmanner.

A Senior Citizen and Ex-FreedomFighter aged 89 years, read about thismeeting in the TOI and came all the wayfrom Boisar to meet the MPs. He wantedto interact with them on the Railwayissue. We felicitated his enthusiasm.Hats off to you, Mr Desai !

Regarding infrastructure, we askedthem to push for the Trans-Harbour SeaLink. The Port Land consisting of 1600acres could be released for Mumbai’s de-velopment. The suggestion given wasthat a 5th Rail Line should be built onthis land.

The women reservation bill has beenpending for years. With a 2/3rd majority, can the new BJP Government assure usthat at the next session, this bill whichprovides for 33% reservation for womenin Parliament and Assembly, will bepassed? For the safety of women, we

need fast track courts. The Verma Com-mission recommends the death sentencefor gang rape, then why not the samepunishment for child rape? (A group ofwomen activists from Bandra have puttogether a letter for our MPs on thisissue)

Environment laws should not be di-luted. Incorporate policies that save theenvironment.1. Combat climate change2. Use contour mapping3. Protect forest land, open spaces, saltpans and waterfronts to prevent flood-ing.Our main demand, unanimously passedby all 500 people present, was that ifMumbaikars send to the national ex-chequer almost 50%, why should we get

only 5% in return? This has to increase. We cannot be treated as step-childrenand taken for granted.

Commenting on the PM’s SwachBharat Abhiyan, which is gatheringsteam, the audience commented thatmany leaders and politicians were takingthis as a photo-opportunity. In manycases, there was no dirt below theirbrooms!

Then, an important decision wastaken. A group of 20 – 25 AGNI volun-teers will work as a team with their re-spective MPs pre and post ParliamentarySessions. This meeting ended with asense of satisfaction by all who attended.

>> PG 1: BANDRA’S TOP TEN BURNING ISSUES: 1. SLUMS: Bandra Reclamation (NargisDutt Nagar, etc.), Kadeshwari (illegalshops built over drains), AmbedkarRoad, Danda, etc. - source of crime &health issues, why free water & electric-ity at tax payers cost? Eye sore to visitors– very bad welcome scenes as you enterthe “Queen Of The Suburbs”…

2. SRK’s RAMP: BMC inaction, inspite ofcompelling proof of illegality. Why wasthe original steps converted to ‘CementROAD’? Was it to camouflage the rampand gain road access to SRK Side Gateand annexe building? Also, the issue ofillegal encroachments (houses & toilets)on the top part of Cement Road is to beresolved. Corrupt officials stop protest-ers…Can we allow INFLUENCE &MONEY POWER to overrule the law ofthe land?

3. HAWKERS: Political Patronage, Haf-tas, Legal Shop frontages blocked, Roadwidth blocked for traffic flow… Where arethe ‘NO HAWKING ZONE’ sign boardsgone? Who is responsible for this state ofaffairs? Who needs to take action? (Thecorner of Prof. Almeida Road & Hill Road(opp. Amrut Sagar), has a hawker on thefootpath, just next to the Police Van !!!)

4. CRIME: Molestations, rapes, robbery, party perverts (name change for seduc-ing the innocent), drug peddling…(Many

reports are coming in, of police trying todissuade people from filing FIRs. Why?)Are CCTVs effective enough?

5. TRAFFIC: Reckless rickshaws, vehi-cles parked continuously for months /years, one-way rules flouted, no co-ordi-nation, traffic cops more interested incollecting fines / bribes... Many one-wayroads are causing bottle-necks becauseof inefficient traffic cops – and have carsparked on both sides by ‘influential peo-ple’. Cops are ‘afraid’ to take action.

6. ENCROACHMENTS: ‘BMC-ApprovedShops’ blatantly occupying full footpathwidth on main arterial roads…Hill Road, opp. Balaji on the full footpath in front ofSt. Joseph Convent - is one example.

7. GARBAGE: Collection vans, narrowlanes blocked at peak hours, for smoothflow of traffic… Can we not have smallergarbage vans for narrow roads, likeChapel Road, etc.? Also, enforcement ofdry & wet waste segregation should bemade stricter…

8. BMC-BUILDER- POLICE- POLITI-CIAN NEXUS: Towers built in gaothanareas…(a glaring example at Sherly Rajanvillage), elderly people pushed out oftheir ancestral homes, with little or nocompensation, permission to certaincommunities delayed endlessly for re-development...

9. BANDRA FAIR: Attempts to subtly

stop this 300 years old event, on variousgrounds, by groups with vested interests, candle stalls harassed by BMC, devoteesdenied access to Mount via CementRoad, on flimsy reasons...

10. CHIMBAI CHANGING: Money andMuscle Power being used to forcibly dis-lodge the original inhabitants (Kolis)from their ancestral land. Coastal rulesare blatantly flouted. This is for othersimilar gaothans too…

There are many other issues too, but letus FOCUS on these top ten, FIRST.

Please add your inputs to these issues onFacebook Group: BANDRA's BURNINGISSUES, so that our new MLA Adv.Ashish Shelar can have insights updatedto his knowledge of Bandra’s Burning is-sues. PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS tohelp resolve these issues will be welcome– so that at brain-storming sessions, wecan get more ANSWERS, to take these is-sues forward. Then the RIGHT ACTIONcan be taken.

Citizens were watching and listening in-tently, as MLA Ashish Shelar interactedwith them. He told them that working to-gether was important for change to hap-pen. To start with, many BMC officersand staff who have not performed havebeen transferred (not by him), so now wehave a fresh BMC mindset in H-Ward.However, transfers are not the solution –as issues need to be addressed into.

Ashish stated that certain ALMs had notinteracted with him in the past, so now itwas his job to see that together burningissues are resolved through the BMC, thestate government, the federal govern-ment and other agencies.

He was fully aware that many parts ofBandra Constituencies are representedby Congress Corporators. His mind isvery clear about this, that wherever thereare civic issues that need to be addressedjointly without political lines; his co-op-eration is assured. Just because the Cor-porator is from another party, it does notmean that things cannot get done. He ishopeful that all Congress Corporatorswill also reciprocate by being positiveand work together in the public interest.Since the MP Poonam Mahajan is fromhis party (BJP), her support is also there- to get many more burning issues ofBandra, Khar & Santacruz resolved in aspeedier manner.

Adv. Ashish Shelar has planned to havea meeting with all concerned BMC andPolice officers - and then act on all burn-ing issues. He then assured everyonepresent three things: 1. Accessability 2. Accountability3. ActionThese are the three A’s that sum upAshish Shelar. The Time Is RIPE – Now ! Lets help him turn his PROMISES ToPERFORMANCES.

60 YEARS SELFLESS SERVICECongratulations, Vivian Pereira - on com-pleting 60 years of voluntary service at Mt.Mary's Basilica, Bandra. His father tookhim to help, when he was 14 years old. After his father Dick Pereira died in 1978,his cousin Melville Mendes took over.

In 1998, when Melville passed away,Vivian was asked to take charge. He hasbeen active in the Parish, at the annualTalent Contest, and the Andrean Fairs -and continues being selflessly involved inother organisations too. God Bless Vivian& his family.

Myra Pereira

FAKE COPSBeware of crooks and con men, spoilingthe image of Bandra.

Last month at 8.30 am, my mum hadgone to Holy Family Hospital for a bloodtest. On her way back through Langaranalane, (between Hill road & Waroda Road)a young decent looking boy approachedher, wished her good morning and askedmy mum if she remembered him - and hisname was Raul.

My mum, being a teacher thought hewas one of her pupils - and spoke to himkindly. He told her to come to the side, ashis ‘boss’ wanted to speak to her. Shefound it strange. Nevertheless, she walkedfew step back & met the so-called ‘boss’,who said he was a cop - and flashed his Po-lice ID. They said they are only safe-guard-ing her interest - and that the new rulingwas that people should not wear gold andwalk around as they will be fined.

He told her to take off her bangles andkeep it in her bag, which she did - and ifshe continues to wear it next time, she willbe fined INR 2000/-

Just then a man walked by wearing athick gold chain, he told him the same. Hetook it off and the ‘make belief cop’, askedfor the chain to log it in his register. Hepretended to weigh the chain in his hand, wrote something and gave the man onecopy and returned the chain. My mumwas walking off, but he told her, he neededto document her bangles as well. She eventold him to just write 2 bangles, but he saidhe had to write a description, as it was hisduty.

Seeing the previous scenario, she gavehim the bangles and instantly the two ofthem ran off towards Hill Road. She ranbehind them - and the guy with the goldchain was waiting in a rickshaw. Thesetwo guys jumped in and took off with theloot.

A young boy was drinking tea at thestall at the end of this lane, and my mumtold him these guys robbed her bangles. He immediately took his bike & followedthem. They went into the NO ENTRY fromHoly Family hospital on to St. AndrewsRoad. He chased them and at Peace Havenand stopped the rickshaw. The guy withthe gold chain got off the rickshaw and rantowards Peace Haven, and this boy notknowing who was the culprit, chased him- while the rickshaw with the other 2 guyswent off.

They caught him - and along with thepublic beat him up. Just then, a cop vanpassed and the cops took control of him. They came back to Hill Road to ask mymum what had happened.

The cops are confident they will getthe other 2 as this is a group targeting ourpeople in Bandra (especially the old). Notyet heard from the police, but hopefully

they catch this gang. Well done to theyoung boy from Waroda Road who had thecourage to chase the Rickshaw. Very fewwould take this risk.

Please pass this info around to yourfriends and families living in Bandra, justto make them aware of such incidents.

SRK RAMPMost interestingly, 99% of people whotook up this cause don’t even live onCement Road or on the adjoining Mt MaryRoad / H.K. Bhabha Road - nor on anyother road used for the Bandra Fair. Theyare not the affected local residents / stake-holders. They are just vested interests whohave travelled from all parts of Mumbai toraise a stink.

Is this the only relevant encroachmentin Mumbai city - and that too on a roadleast used all year round.

More hilarious is the fact that SharukhKhan is never in Mumbai for the BandraFair and no one in their right mind wouldkeep such an expensive vehicle on publicroad when the riff raff of Mumbai come toseek blessings.

While the demolition of ramp may bean issue... who in Bandra pays for parkingon the road ? Do check parking IS freelyavailable at all iconic spots in Bandra. Thisissue is a great publicity gimmick !

Lillian Pais

Adv. Ashish Shelar, since you are now ourMLA – please follow up on the notice youhad sent to actor Sharukh Khan regardinghis illegal ramp. Get the BMC to act in anun-biased manner, now that their corruptofficials have been transferred. Do not beblinded with hi-profile personalities. We,law-abiding citizens cannot allow moneypower to rule over democratic laws.

We hope that our vote for you has notgone in vain – and that real CHANGE willhappen, where truth and justice prevails.People of Bandra, Khar and SantaCruzhave placed their hope in you (and got youelected), so that among other burning is-sues, this glaring RAMP issue comes to alogical solution.

MP POONAM INTERACTIONI would like if our Bandra residents com-ment on Facebook Group: Bandra’sBURNING ISSUES, with their suggestionswhich they would like to convey for ourMP Poonam Mahajan.

She would like to hear several sugges-tions from her active citizens, on how wecan collaboratively make this con-stituency & nation, a better place to live in.She would discuss all your suggestionsand concerns in parliament eloquentlyand ensure that every citizen's voice isheard. Godfrey Joseph Pereira, was born in PaliVillage, Bandra on December 22, 1955where he attended Saint Andrews HighSchool. Graduating from National Col-lege, Godfrey received his undergradu-ate degree in English Literature andPhilosophy, from Bombay University.Godfrey joined ‘Onlooker’ magazine astrainee journalist. He worked for a num-ber of publications in India. He was theassistant Editor, of ‘Society’ magazine,‘Sunday’ magazine and’ India Today.’ Healso covered the first Gulf War from Is-rael. Several years later, Godfrey mi-grated to the United States. He worked asa reporter/writer in ‘News India,’ ‘IndiaAbroad’ and ‘India Monitor’ in New YorkCity. Godfrey currently works as EventsDirector at The Monroe Center for theArts in Hoboken, New Jersey. BloodlineBandra by Godfrey Joseph Pereira will bepublished by Harper Collins at the end ofNovember 2014.

Is the novel Bloodline Bandra a fic-tional story based on true events? Yes, that is true. Bloodline Bandra is sec-tioned off into two parts and an epilogue.Part I, describes the salt and spice of theCatholic East Indian way of life in Palivillage, Bandra. As a child I had experi-enced this life & it has always intriguedme. Part II describes the life of DavidCabral in New York City as a “LegalSlave.”

I had been taping the way the East In-dians spoke for many years. I am a stu-dent of English Literature and Iinstinctively knew, that there was some-thing linguistically brilliant here. Fiveyears ago, I sent the tapes to a linguisticsProfessor I knew who had once taughtlinguistics at Cornell University inIthaca, Up-State New York. She was as-tounded by what she was listening to.What people in India call "The Mack"way of speaking has a lyrical magic andis now dying, dying, almost gone.

Here is an example: Expressing ob-scenity or talking about sex withoutsounding “dirty” was classic Pali Villagedoublespeak. Tommy-Eat-Shit-A-Lotspeaking to Thelma Two Teeth.Tommy-Eat-Shit-A-Lot: “Ah-Ray-Thelma!”Thelma Two Teeth: “What men, whatyou want bugger. I can see your leg isshaking.”Tommy-Eat-Shit-A-Lot: “My hands arescratching men. If your hands arescratching like mine are scratching, we

can scratch together, no ……. Maybe wecan bleddy, you know….”Thelma Two Teeth: “You know wotmen, I feel same.”Tommy-Eat-Shit-A-Lot: “Let us go toBandstand, sit behind the rocks andbleddy make Happy Diwali men.”What the couple wanted to do was forni-cate, hidden from public view, behindthe black rocks at the sea side at Ban-dra’s, Land’s End, Bandstand; and Di-wali, is a festival of hot fire works, lighting lubricated erect wicks of lamps, and passionate sweet celebration.

I am an East Indian & I knew as a writer,I had to try and preserve this on paper. My roots run deep in the gutters of Palivillage. My great grandfather built one ofthe very first houses in the village. It stillstands there today.

Going back, I wanted to capture howPali village was really like. The tapestryof life in the village was a story that hadto be told. That is how it all started. Backthen, everyone had a pet name. In Blood-line Bandra, you will meet Tommy-Eat-Shit-A-Lot, Lorna Leg Spread, Salt Peter,Catgut Willie and a host of colorfulamazing characters. These characters, inBloodline Bandra were all built by takingminiscule characteristics of many peopleand cementing that into one whole. Yes,

that's all real. But what is fascinating isthe way the East Indians intermingled...their mores, their Kabuki reactions tosimple actions; their rustic lives were fas-cinating, and of course they way theytalked, absolutely brilliant, when ob-served from the perspective of EnglishLiterature.

Could you tell us something aboutthe story in brief? The salient fea-tures, without revealing the ending,of course? Well, David Cabral, a journalist lives inPali Village. Part I of Bloodline Bandradescribes how the East Indians lived; inPali village as it used to be once upon atime; a picturesque rusty world, wherecommon sense was often over ridden bysuperstitions and old wives’ tales. Theirway of everyday life was fascinating.

Eventually David Cabral, with hisrustic philosophy, and rural expecta-tions, leaves for the Promised Land;

America, to work for an Indian publica-tion in New York City where he istrapped in what I call "Legal Slavery."

What is "Legal Slavery?" When youcome to The States and many othercountries, you are issued a work visa. Now this work visa, states that you canonly work for the company that "spon-sors" you. And that's when the teeth ofthe trap start closing. Many of thesesponsors, treat you like an animal, handyou a minimum wage, and sometimesphysically torture you. The facts are pub-lished on www.bloodlinebandra.com.The research shook my soul. I discoveredthat Indians do this to other Indians, notonly in New York City but all over theworld. And here is the truth. I was a vic-tim of "Legal Slavery' myself. It is a hor-rible mind breaking experience that ledme down a torturous, dark road where Ieventually tried to commit suicide.David Cabral goes through the hell of a"Legal Slave" in New York City. Part II ishis sad, shocking, unbelievable storythat has bits and pieces of my own expe-riences.

The review on your site mentionssomething about 'Modern Day Slav-ery'? What exactly is that and howdoes it feature in this Novel? Yes, that is correct. David Cabral, thecentral character falls into the black holeof modern day slavery in New York City.He speaks for all the powerless people allover the world who are brutally exploited& savaged by their employers. What hegoes through has to be read, it happened,& unfortunately it is still happening. Thisis real. David Cabral's story is an amalga-mation of millions of Indian workersabroad who are treated like cattle.

This Modern Day Slavery is takingplace all over the world. From sea toshining sea in America to the heart landof India, England, Australia, NewZealand & Hong Kong & many places inthe so called "Gulf" region.

Take the thousands of South Indians, who are shipped to places like Kuwait,Saudi Arabia, etc. They are conned byslimy Indian agents, and when they landthere, their Arab bosses treat them likesub human beings. They are legal work-ers, but this is Slavery. The world knowshow they are treated. They are under-paid, but not so badly so it is illegal. Andthat helps the company they work for.The human rights of the workers areground to dirt, their dignity raped. Theyare herded into corrugated shacks andsleep like animals stacked in a slaughterhouse awaiting execution. Their pass-ports are confiscated; their benefits arenonexistent, this is a humiliating balland chain life. This is ugly slavery, myfriend, any way you look at it. This is"Legal Slavery." The same happens tomany Indian worker, who works with anH-1B work visa in New York City. I havemet hundreds of Indian restaurant work-ers, motel workers, gas station atten-dants in New York State, and the storiesare all the same. "Legal Slavery." It isheartbreaking that some Indians do thisto other Indians and this is happening allover the world.www.bloodlinebandra.com documentsthis. As someone born in India it mademe feel ashamed and sad. I had to docu-ment this. I have to add here that obvi-ously not all Indians are like that, butthere is a dark side to many Indians liv-ing abroad.

Have you had the chance to visit Palivillage recently? What are thechanges that you observed?Yes, I have. I was there a couple of yearsago; I am still attached by a psychologi-cal umbilical cord to Pali village; I wasborn there. And, of course there havebeen colossal changes. It’s been almostthirty years since I left. God, it’s been along time. I now hear the Bandra localsrefer to Pali village as “Ali village” be-cause the Muslims have moved in andthe East Indians have moved out. Now,the tag “Ali village” has an ugly religionracist undertone. What did the East Indi-ans expect? They all moved out toCanada and The Gulf and America… andthen they complain that other peoplehave taken their place!

I personally, have forfeited the moralright to complain or moan, because I didrun away to America. But then, in retro-spect, India has always been racist. TheBombay wallaha calling someone aMadrasi because of his or her dark skin.Calling a Gujrati a bleddy pucca Mar-wari, a Parsi a Kekeda Khao and ha! AChristian a Mack Ah Pao…. Or a Maha-rashtraian a dutty bleddy Ghati. We allneed to look at our fault lines under themicroscope of a black light; oh and onemore thing, the fat man with a reallydark skin, looking for a bride, insistingon a “Slim” “Fair” complexioned Brah-min virgin who has a University degree. Is this guy looking to marry a woman oris he just looking to hire a pedigree petthat will add to his social status & satisfyhis religious guilt? I know that this hasnothing to do with slavery, I just had tomention this. I mean, look at the matri-monial ads. It is still happening, this vilehypocrisy. Amazing. This is the year

2014. This is the real “Make In India,” thenew Indian slogan. These are the olddirty ways the new Indian broom has tostart sweeping out.

Have you seen shades of slavery inBandra, the place you were born in?Thank you; that is a loaded question, Iwas hoping that you would ask. Whenmost people think about slavery, bighuman bondage trafficking events comeforth. Now here is something that peopleshould think about. All these fat cat richand upper middle class people, ‘The PaliHill Sultans,’ I call them, who are so usedto the “Servant Culture” that exists inmost big cities in India, aid and abet slav-ery, everyday of their bloody opulentlives. Many of them have live-in “ser-vants’’ who slave from 6am to 10pmevery day.

Many of these servants are younggirls from the surrounding rural villagesoff Bombay. These kids should be withtheir families, not slaving over some richfat business man’s, or film star’s family’sneeds and the wants of their obnoxiousdesigner clad children. Not only are yourobbing this young person of her child-hood, it is against the law, and morallyrepugnant. This is domestic servitude, any which way you cut it. Where I comefrom, this is SLAVERY. This is moralbankruptcy on the part of all thesebloated Bada Sahibs and Memsahib’s.And what is pathetic, is no one gives thisa thought.

As long as their rich needs and wantsare taken care of, and their back sidespampered, all is right in their world. They compensate by saying that they aretreating the girls well, and put forth vilearguments and stupid ignorant deduc-tions, that if this young girl did not havethis job she would be starving, miserableand unhappy in her rural impoverish-ment.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. You are im-prisoning a young life here. This kidshould be in school, preparing for a fu-ture, not making your bloody chai anddal and swabbing your floors and dust-ing that expensive Persian carpet a con-tact smuggled for you out of Isfahan,Iran, and massaging the feet of the Sahibafter he comes back from his office. Oh!Come on man! Come on! This is stomachchurning. This is so wrong.

I have talked about this in Bandra topeople I know who had a sixteen-year-old girl servant that had brought in fromRaigad district. The crass retort I was in-stantly slapped with was, “Ha! Suddenlyyou have become bloody American, talk-ing with an accent and speaking rubbish. This is not America, alright! Go look atyour own country; they are creatingproblems all over the world; go look atslavery in your own damn country.” Notonly was that insulting on so many lev-els, it also was an uneducated and stupidrebuttal to something that I think ispretty indefensible.

Any advice you could give to young-sters from India planning to emigrateto Western lands? I really can't give any advice except thatplease, please look at the grass on theother side really hard. The grass tipssometimes are sharp and vicious, andthings are not always what they seem.

Sure, there are opportunities abroad andmany Indians make it, but rememberthere is that dark side to that far awaybright moon.

Read what thousands of Indians aregoing through in South Hall in West Lon-don, as they are exploited by other Indi-ans. The BBC has done in depth reportson this. I may live in America, but myBloodline is Indian, I hang my head inshame when I see this. I have been toLondon, many times, I have seen thisslavery. It is astounding. I am not makingthis up to sound dramatic. It has all beendocumented.

Having lived in Bandra as well as in aWestern country, what similaritiesdo you see between the two? You can't really compare; it’s apples andoranges. New York City or New Jerseyhas its own characteristics and so doesMumbai. One thing about New York City;it has a bounce and vibe that no othercity in the world has.

Take Bandra. It is a great place that islike a chameleon, it changes all the time;you or me may not agree with the trans-formation, but that’s another discussion.Like any place in this world, if you havethe money it is alright.

Mumbai, and especially Mumbaiseems to have taken on the English pub,American rock n’ roll and designer cul-ture. Bandra is a Pub center central des-tination; am I right?

Again, like here, in New York City, these things have two sides. It all de-pends on what side of the bar counter

you are standing at. I am not qualified todo a review. Would I come back to live inBandra? Yes, of course. Can I afford tolive in Bandra, buy a house, etc.? No, ofcourse.

Where exactly do you feel people canbest find their ultimate dream? Is itpossible to find it in Bandra itself? Of course you can find it in Bandra. I did, before I left for The United States. This isa place that is a famous suburb of a citythat is the financial capital of India. Thismust go abroad mantra is an advertisingline that has still not died out. India has progressed so much. If you have a dream, with talent and chutzpa that is needed ina place like Mumbai, you can make it.There is no doubt about it. I have heardpeople say; Mumbai has got so crowded, the traffic is terrible, there is garbage allover the place, and corruption is gettingworse.

Well, New York City has its own prob-lems that are too detailed to get intohere. So what are we talking about? Re-member, that well manicured greengrass on the other side can be an opticalillusion sometimes.

Nassar Abdulla is an actor and production manager, known for Om Shanti Om (2007), Main Hoon Na (2004)and Taxi No. 9211: Nau Do Gyarah (2006).

Have you always been a resident of Bandra? Whatdo you love about this suburb?I was in Bandra for 8 years from 1987 to 1995, nearAlmeida Park, in a lovely bungalow. Now I’m back sincea year. I love the many bungalows here and the smalleralleys in Pali village & behind Hill road, they have aGoan feel about them the Sea side, the Promenades, theCafes, Pali hill area and Lands End.

You wear various hats - as actor, writer and direc-tor. Which of these do you feel gives maximumscope for creative output? All 3 have ample scope for unleashing maximum cre-ativity. But yes now I would like to direct a movie. Butworking on Directing Public Service Films on variousissues. The main one now being to discourage our menfrom harassing, molesting and raping our women!!!

How would you compare the Bollywood movies oftoday with the ones of the early 1990s, which iswhen you commenced your career? Has the focusshifted in any way? There has been a significant change since then as in theDepiction of Life is shown as more affluent and racy. The music has gone a bit haywire. I accept that. I didmy first film in 1993 Dil Aashna Hai with ShahrukhKhan. It was his first too. I didn’t do much after that asI was a bit unsure of myself as an actor. Mostly I didcommercials lasting from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Itwas convenient and I am into short cuts as I stayed inthat part of the business. Ha-Ha!!!

You mention that you would like to do comedy. Iscomedy more difficult to portray than other emo-tions on screen? What are the special challenges as-sociated with it?Comedy is as difficult or easy to play out as any otherpart. Unless its slapstick and overdone by the regulars.Yes it is about timing and being understated that hasthe audience genuinely amused. A funny looking faceis not essential. I would love to do a part. I am prettyfunny and can evoke a laugh pretty easily withoutworking hard on it! Waiting for the right director to spotthat & cast me!!! Not away !!!

It is observed in India that most humour on thelarge screen as well as the small screen is mostlyslapstick, not subtle. Is it that Indian audiences donot appreciate subtle humour, such as British hu-mour, for example? The audience can be moved either way, if genuine com-edy is portrayed then I don’t see why it wont be a hitwith them.

Do you feel the shifting focus being given to specialeffects as a result of enhanced technology is mak-ing the directors shift focus from a content-drivenstoryline?Yes the special effect has given a huge opportunity toenthrall the audience with a near life like images toheighten their enjoyment in the theaters. It’s good andfun, for the new generation especially.

Do you feel Bandra has changed radically over theyears? If so, is it for the worse or for the better? What improvements would you like to see done?Yes a change was imminent. So it has. The many

smaller houses and bungalows have become multi-sto-ried buildings. Fortunately many of the old faithfulshave refused to sell off their beautiful quaint bungalowsto builders. Many streets remain the same Pali villageand colony behind Hill road.

The traffic can be a nightmare as it was not as heavybefore. Would love the honking to cease or at least bemuffled. By Law!!!

The garbage and encroachments an irritant!!! Toomany gold jewellery shops on Turner road. Ha-ha, I amjealous as I can’t afford them.

If you were to write a script for a movie based onBandra, what would the focus be on? What storywould Bandra have to tell?A movie with the backdrop of Bandra would mean a set-ting of a villa/bungalow & its many other beautific areaslike the Promenades, the Seaside. Style ones would allfigure. The Lands End with characters from the Chris-tian & Parsi community playing a vital role in it. Theyhave played a huge role in opening up many vistas forour many communities in Mumbai. So a love story plusother stories going parallel in it. Spirit of Bandra isunique & multifaceted. Racy yet laid back. The PoliceStation would also figure as it looks unique to me!!!

Papier is the brain child of Usha Pi-thawala. It all started when she was ill athome in bed, and bored so she decided toplay with the “paper bead” set someonehad given her daughter as a gift. Its fromthere that this paper bead making becamea passion and she started selling the jew-ellery she made at exhibitions that be-came a hit.

Since her passion has now become aflourishing business she has decided tointroduce her home staff to its benefits, she pays them to help her make the jew-ellery and other stuff she makes out ofpaper, magazines and other recyclableplastics, glass bottles, waste cloth materi-als. The business started off as a paperjewellery business and has gone down therecycling alley to use waste to make use-able products.

Usha thinks its necessary to provide asource of secondary income to underpriv-iliged who can work from home doingbeading, threading, making lights, headwear, necklaces, earings, lamps, rugs andmany more unimaginable things fromthis creative genius. She gets most of herraw materials for free from friends, restaurants, gymkhanas, clubs, factories. She makes decorations from these recy-cled materials for festivals such as ganeshchathurthi, diwali and christmas. Onceshe made an entire ganesh mandal for herhousing soceity with recycled materialand ran LED lights through them.

The price range for her paper jewelleryis Rs.100 to Rs. 1000. She hopes that peo-ple will buy her jewellery and festival dec-orations, but she cannot compete with theprices of “made in China”. So this festivalseason encourage local made even if itcosts more, encourage the local economy.

NOVEMBER 2014 ACHIEVER12 BANDRABUZZ.COM

Awarded the title of the World’s BestCoach in the field of mental sports,Gwendolen Noronha (26) has been in-strumental in orchestrating the victori-ous tour of team India in the recentlyconcluded Mental Calculation WorldCup 2014, which took place from the 1stOctober to 12th October, in Dresden, Ger-many. Indian mental calculator GranthThakkar, was hailed the overall cham-pion and the winner of the Mental Calcu-lation World Cup 2014, making thenation and his coach proud. The Indianteam was represented by 13 players whoput in all their neuro fluids to good effectto return home champions, a total of 21countries and 39 mental calculators par-ticipated in the World Cup. The sport ofMental Calculation is practiced and fol-lowed in more than 150 countries.

Gwendolen has been inclined to-wards mental sports since she was achild, and for the past seven years shehas been mentoring and coaching chil-dren, who have a drive to go beyond thesyllabus assigned to them at school. However tracing her love for the disci-pline back to her childhood was not veryfruitful as to my surprise she disliked thesubject in school. She was a bright child, which enabled her to grasp and compre-hend the topics thought at school withease. What drew her towards the un-known space of mental calculation wasthe curiosity within, that motivated herto go beyond what was the norm of theeducation system and beyond what wasexpected of her. Gwendolen says that,“Every brain thinks and perceives differ-ently and that is the phenomenon whichattracts me” She considers the humanbrain, very intriguing and is constantlytrying to decipher its functionality andattributes. Speaking more on the subjectshe shares some facts with us regardingthe benefits of mental sports, “Researchstudy states that memory in the lefthemisphere of the human brain wouldnot stay long, but an image that isrecorded in the right hemisphere wouldstay in the mind forever. By stimulatingthe brain with mental calculations andmemory sports challenges, the ability tostore and recall is developed and that’sexactly what we incorporate while train-ing. In my opinion learning how to com-pute numbers or solve mathematicaltasks mentally is important as it will tapthe unexploited parts of the brain. Thereare numerous research studies whichclaim that performing mental calcula-tions not only results in the ability tohaving a great mathematical power butan overall intelligence. Especially thetechnique used to calculate mentally byus would develop several other skills likeconcentration, imagination, visualiza-tion, observation and memory; mentalcalculation being just the end result.”

Gwnedolen graduated from St. An-drews College, Bandra and completedher Masters in Management. On

quizzing her about the sport’s future inthe country her answer is logical, andhighlights the issues that we as a nationtake for granted, “Our country needs toencourage and endorse all categories ofsports not just mental sports. It’s sad tosee that even newspapers dedicatebarely a page or two showcasing sportingevents and personalities, instead empha-sis on crime and politics. I am not disre-specting any profession here. I woulddefinitely consider getting involved inpolitics someday, but are these the onlyfields of interest we Indians have? It isdisheartening that sometimes, you needa movie star to promote a particularsport. For instance, if I initiate a MentalCalculations League and sell teams tobollywood celebrities and then have thematches, the viewership and fan follow-ing will certainly increase.”

Accolades is no stranger to Gwen-dolen, in the year 2006 she was awardedthe “Youngest Entrepreneur” title, in theyear 2010 she was facilitated by “Leadersin International Education” for her con-tribution towards education. Miss.Noronha was named one of India’s MostDesirable Woman, and featured amongstthe Top Ten Leading Women byAchiever’s Chair in 2014. Justifying thetitle of the “World’s Best Coach 2014”,that was bestowed upon her by the verybest in the field of mental calculations,to name a few, Melik Duyar (Mental Cal-culations and Memory Sports - Memo-riad Olympics Chairperson), ScottFlansburg (The Human Calculator), Yus-nier Viera, Nelson Dellis, Naofumi Oga-sawari and many more. Gwendoleninspired and guided team India to estab-lish 18 world records and gain global su-premacy by winning the 2014 World Cup,all of this in a span of two years since tak-ing over the reigns as coach.

With regards to future plans she en-thusiastically says, “Even the sky isn’tthe limit and mental calculations is amind sport. There is always room for im-provement. The next step is to spreadawareness and impart training to the

masses, not just in India but in other na-tions as well. The goal is to build agreater community of mental calculatorsglobally. We are heading towards theMental Calculations and Memory SportsOlympics in 2016 at Las Vegas and beforethat the eliminations have to be con-ducted in India in 2015.” Before she gets

busy with preparation work for the chal-lenges that lay ahead, Gwendolen sharesan example to illustrate how logic canpositively influence the way we perceivemaths and calculation.

Write down the table of 9 in a mannerthat the answer is divided into twocolumns, the first being in black & thesecond in light black.9 x 1 = 09 9 x 2 = 189 x 3 = 279 x 4 = 369 x 5 = 459 x 6 = 549 x 7 = 639 x 8 = 729 x 9 = 819 x 10 = 90

“The first column has ascending num-bers from 0 to 9 and vice versa in the sec-ond column, from 9 to 0. This isn’tapplicable for all numbers but everynumber has some pattern or logic, it’sonly about taking the effort to find out.”

Chakra meditation is one of the very popular & interestingmeditation. Chakras are the points of concentrated energy, situated in the subtle body or ‘pranic body’, not physicalbody. They are the meeting points or junctions of the energychannels called as ‘nadis’. Two important nadis namely idaand pingla cross each other at these chakra points. Manythousands subtle channels arise from these chakras andreach every part of the body. Vital energy called ‘prana’ flowsthrough these channels. These chakras are sensitive to men-tal concentration. When one focuses on these chakras, thenthe nerves around these carry the sensations to mind andseveral muscles. These chakras are also called plexus due tothe formation of network or web of nerves.

The word chakra literally means whirlpool, vortex, spin-ning circle or wheel. In ancient texts of yoga & meditationthey are symbolized as ‘lotus’, having a specific number of‘petals’. Each chakra is associated with a specific beejmantra, which is a sound of certain wave length & frequency. These chakras are situated in spine but their influence is alsoon front of the body.

Every chakra is associated with specific characteristics, specific emotions, specific personality traits, specific level ofconsciousness & specific level of spiritual evolution.

There are 7 major chakras in the body. 1. Muladhar chakra, root chakra, situated at the perineum. Its beej manta is ‘lung’. It is represented by lotus of 4 petals. Its element is ‘earth’.

2. Svadhisthana chakra, sacral chakra, situated at centerof pelvic area below the naval. Its beej mantra is ‘vung’. It isrepresented by lotus of 6 petals. Its element is ‘water’

3. Manipura chakra, naval chakra, situated at naval. Its beejmantra is ‘rung’. Represented by lotus of 10 petals. Its ele-ment is ‘fire’.

4. Anahata chakra, heart chakra, situated at center of chestin line with nipples. Its beej mantra is ‘yung’. Representedby lotus of 12 petals. Its element is ‘air’.

5. Vishuddhi chakra, throat chakra, situated at throat pit.Its beej mantra is ‘hung’. Represented by lotus of 16 petalsIts element is ‘aakash’ i.e. ‘space’.

6. Agya chakra, forehead chakra, 3rd eye, situated at centerof forehead between eyebrows. Its beej mantra is ‘om’.

Represented by lotus of 2 petals.

7. Sahasraar chakra, crown chakra, situated at top of thehead. It has no beej mantra as it is beyond sound. Repre-sented by lotus of 1000 petals.

For meditation on chakras one should sit straight in com-fortable cross leg position on some asana made from cottonor wool. If one is unable to sit in cross leg position, then hemay sit on a sofa or a chair. First thing is to relax the body, specially the shoulders, fingers, neck, face & forehead. Thenfor few moments one should watch the flow of breath so thatthe mind settles down. Then one may chant any small prayeror do om chanting 3 times.

Now focus your awareness on the root chakra at per-ineum and feel the incoming breath gently coming to thischakra. Feel the vibrations there and mentally chant the beejmantra ‘lung’ for some time. Feel that you are becomingmore confident, courageous and fearless, as you connectwith this chakra and as this gets awakened.

After some time bring your focus on Svadhisthana chakraat pelvic region, 4 fingers below naval. Feel the incomingbreath gently coming to this chakra and let your awarenessdwell here. You will feel vibrations and heat building up.Mentally chant the beej mantra ‘vung’ for some time. As youawaken & cleanse this chakra, your sub conscious mind getshealed & you become more balanced person.

Now bring your awareness to the naval chakra and feelthe vibrations there as you gently inhale the breath. You willalso feel the warmth at and around naval. Mentally chant thebeej mantra ‘rung’ for some time. As you awaken this chakra, feel your will power becoming stronger and stronger.

Now raise your focus on the Anahata i.e. heart chakra, atcenter of chest. Gently breath into heart chakra and awakenthis chakra of love and compassion, chakra of joy and hap-piness. Deep in your heart feel the warmth of love & feel theinner happiness. Let the love spring out from heart & spreadaround. Let the happiness spring out from heart and spreadaround. Mentally chant the beej manta ‘yung’ for some time.As you connect with your heart chakra, you feel contented;absolutely contented. You feel at peace with yourself, con-nected to your core.

Now bring your awareness to the Vishuddhi chakra atthroat pit. Mentally chant the beej mantra ‘hung’ for sometime & feel the mantra vibrating at throat pit. As you awakenthis chakra, your communication power will become moreclear and effective. Your thyroid gland will function better. The quality of your sleep will improve.

Now bring the awareness to the forehead center, betweeneyebrows to the Agya chakra; the chakra of wisdom, creativ-ity & intuition; the chakra of spiritual transformation & en-lightenment. See the vast cosmic space behind forehead. Letyour limited individual self merge with this infinite cosmicspace. This will guide your path to enlightenment. Mentallychant the mantra ‘om’ as you look at the forehead center andalso visualize the bright sparkling light there. You may gen-tly breath into this chakra to further activate it. You will feelpeaceful and extremely pleasant meditative state, transcen-dental state. The ancient tradition of putting ‘bindi’ or ‘tilak’was for activating this 3rd eye.

Now raise your awareness to the top of head i.e. Crownchakra. Let your consciousness stay there and get stabilized,as you move into a thoughtless state. This Sahasraar is thechakra of highest level of consciousness, beyond time andspace. As your awareness dwells here, all illusions arewashed out; your spirit gets purified and prepares to get lib-erated from cycle of birth and death.

The beginners may find it little difficult to locate the po-sition of chakra while meditating. So they can touch the fin-gers on chakra position for a while. That makes it easy forthe mind to ascertain the position & focus. These chakras aremagnets which naturally attract the concentration of themeditator.

Do not suddenly come out of the meditation. Move yourfingers, toes and then rub your palms till they feel warm andthen place them on your face. Take your time and then grad-ually open the eyes. Before coming out of meditation youcan also pray for the peace and wellbeing of all the beingsaround you and all over universe.

Children’s day hasalways been specialfor me... It bringsout the child in us.A friend once toldme that there areno bad children, only bad behav-

iour... It's true. Our environment affectsour behaviour. One of the greatest formsof wealth is happy, healthy, and well-ad-justed, behaved children.

Transform your child’s life by an in-depth analysis of him/herself through aPersonalised Feng Shui Analysis Report. This will definitely help your child bal-ance his/her life for greater success: to cre-ate a healthy, happy environment thatfosters education, good health, happy re-lationships with parents and siblings, andrespect for parents and others.

I have a 14 year old son. I am doing uphis room. He wants to have a fishaquarium in his room. Please advice.

Mrs. Sumitra BajajAvoid water themes in the bedroom. Wa-terpictures whether it’s a painting on awall, dark blue ocean themes, a fish tankor an aquarium creates an unhealthy en-vironment in children’s rooms & may evenlead to respiratory ailments, and depres-sion. This is especially important if thechild has any health problems, particu-larly asthma.

I must say your column is very inter-esting. Our son and daughter ages 6 &3 sleep on a bunk bed. Are bunk bedsgood as they grow up?

Mr. Jerome VazThank you. Bunk beds are not advised.Children must have room to grow and thebed overhead exerts pressure on the childbelow. Because there is empty space belowthem, children on the top bunk may feelless secure.
