AIA NS 2013 Committees

Recently I was reviewing the articles I have written, going all the way back to the early 1980’s. In looking at them, there seems to be more about ‘the ask of the membership’ than anything else that I have written about. As I close in on the end of my term as your Regional Director, my thoughts turn to not the past 30 years, but the past 3.

When I arrived in Washington, DC in December of 2010 to join the National Board, I was assigned to the Board Advocacy Committee (BAC) as well as the ArchiPAC Steering Committee. I looked at these assignments as a reward for the past efforts back home with APAC and work on the Legislative and Gov’t. Affairs Committee. After the first year of service on the board, Russ Davidson, FAIA, Chairman of the BAC, chose me to be the Chairman of the Policy and Position Statements subcommittee. These public policies are the Institute’s core beliefs that are presented nationally to policy makers, the public and the construction industry. The supporting position statements are an elaboration of these policies. Hopefully, you have reviewed these and made your comments. The deadline for same is

November 12th.

The three committees are related directly to the Institute’s ADVOCACY effort. Here is the ask, once again: We need a commitment from each and every member. How much does individual COMMITMENT matter? Well at the Institute there is nothing more POWERFUL!

Today, tomorrow and for the years to come the relationship that we have developed over the past three years with our Congressional Representatives needs to continue to strengthen. While my thanks go out to those of you who have stepped up and made your ArchiPAC donation, if you can make another it would be most appreciated. And finally, I do want to make one last request to those who have not to do so.

Our relationship with members of Congress can not be taken for granted, and we work with both sides of the aisle! I know that

COMMITMENT MATTERS!

the last three to five years have not been kind to our profession, but that is the real reason why we have to step up our campaign and I am asking each and everyone of you to be a partner with me in what I am calling Jerry’s REGIONAL CHALLENGE.

The value of your donation (in whatever amount you choose) will be MOST evident when Section leaders, along with AIA New Jersey leaders, including Robert Cozzarelli, AIA as your new Regional Director, visit Capitol Hill next spring.

If you do not have one of the many postage free envelopes that I have given out during the course of this year, you can make your donation online. Just go to the Institute’s main web page, click on Issues & Advocacy and then click on Donate to ArchiPAC. It is very simple, but also very important.

Together, we can make AIA New Jersey the absolute leader of the 19 Regions and nearly three hundred AIA components in raising what we need to remain strong.

Thank you!

Design Awards - Night at the Museum…. The 20th Annual AIA Newark and Suburban Design Awards were held Thursday evening, October 17 at the Morris Museum in Morristown. Over one hundred NS members and Allied Members and their guests gathered to enjoy a fine cocktail party, view the submitted works and see the presentation of Awards in the Museum’s Bickford Theatre.

Thirty project boards were submitted by fourteen member firms. The invited guest jurors – Claire Weisz, FAIA; Jack A. Purvis, AIA; Stuart Disston, AIA and LEED GA; and Hugh Trumbull III, AIA – spent the afternoon reviewing the entries and engaging in spirited and intense discussions before ultimately selecting seven projects for awards.

On the whole, the jurors were drawn to project boards that clearly told a story of what the design problem was, how it was addressed, and what was ultimately achieved. They especially appreciated the boards that used diagrams to show what the designers did and didn’t do and how the design exceeded their clients’ expectations.

The Category of Historic Preservation / Adaptive Reuse, for which three projects were selected for awards, was not a pre-determined category created by the Design Awards Committee, but rather came about as a result of the jurors deciding that a good number of the projects they selected for awards were projects that involved the restoration of existing buildings for new uses, and that these projects by their nature could not fully be categorized as Built projects, which typically connotes a project featuring new buildings and/or additions. The jurors also saw these projects as

excellent examples of Green Architecture in their reuse of existing structures.

Project boards from this year’s group will be on display at the AIANS CANstruction Event at the Livingston Mall from November 14 – 17.

Here are the 2013 AIA Newark and Suburban Design Awards Results: (photos are on page 5)

Historic Preservation/Adaptive Reuse

Gold Medal: Kimpton Hotel Monaco – Gensler

The jurors selected this large-scale project for a Gold Medal as they viewed it as well-executed and fully worked-out in design at all levels and a project that contained many more layers to discover than could be depicted on one single presentation board. The jurors also commended this project for the positive influence it has on its

surrounding environs.

Silver Medal: Thomas A. Wilson Building – Posen Architects LLC

The jurors praised this entry for the efforts the Architects took in preserving this historic structure on a limited budget and how the

design supports the client’s social mission.

Bronze Medal: Rogers Locomotive Works Storage Bui ld ing – CTS Group Architecture/Planning PA

This project entry was praised as an example of how a historic structure that was left to crumble was brought back to life. The jurors admired the care in which the Architects restored original elements, such as the façade, skylights, beams, and doors.

Rostrum Format and Frequency to Change As our Regional Director Jerry says it’s YOUR organization, OUR profession and YOUR Rostrum; and starting next year (2014) the Rostrum is planning a change to a quarterly format. Please stay tuned for a brief survey next month regarding the Rostrum. The current plan is to publish in April, June, September and December. But we really want to hear from you as to the utility and relevance of this format in your professional life. We continue to be interested in providing great content about the work of our members and to feature a more in-depth reporting of issues that relate to our architects and members. DESIGN AWARDS 2013

Interiors/Featured Element Non-Residential

Silver Medal: All Stars Project of New Jersey - Posen Architects LLC

The jurors lauded this adaptive reuse project for its civic agenda and in the manner in which it engages its neighborhood. The jurors used adjectives such as “fun, cost-effective, honest, and straightforward” to describe the project.

Featured Element Residential

Gold Medal: Karpf Residence Stair – Clawson Architects, LLC

This project was held up by the jurors as epitomizing what the Featured Element category should be – a clear and cleanly depicted presentation board that, being

informed by the project, does a good job of not showing the house as a whole but rather focusing on the stair and its place within the context of an older house. The jurors felt

that this submission was perhaps the best

presentation of the thirty boards entered.

Silver Medal: Nussbaum Pool Pavilion – Clawson Architects, LLC

The jurors felt this project belonged in the Featured Element category as, being a pool house, it was an amenity to the main house. They commended the straightforward structural expression of the open gable and its post and beam construction as a proper response for an element at the end of the pool.

Un-Built Non-Residential

Bronze Medal: Atlantic City Public Market – Hugh A. Boyd Architects

The jurors believe this un-built entry has vast potential as an example of how a well-designed public building can play a strong role in revitalizing a neighborhood. The jurors were captivated by the clear parti and are eager to see the project as a completed built structure.
